Wayfinding Signage
HOK worked with Salt Lake City to create an entirely new airport in Utah’s capital. The project is one of the nation’s largest aviation developments in years and the first completely new airport built in the U.S. in the a21st century.
The holistic signage program is integrated with the new terminal’s roadway approach, transit program, exterior architecture, interior space, advertising strategy and art program. The design for each type of wayfinding signage includes a definition of type styles, colors, size and materials. Design considerations included the project budget, maintenance, lighting, ability to easily accommodate future upgrades and cost effectiveness over time.
Portland International Airport Signage Master Plan

Wayfinding Signage, Sign Standards, Master Planning LOCATION SERVICES
A key component to Portland International Airport (PDX) awardwinning success is the ease in which passengers can navigate their facilities. Throughout the years, as PDX has expanded, terminal signage has had many slight modifications resulting in inconsistent signage throughout the facility.
As the design of several large airport capital projects is underway, PDX’s Signage Master Plan sets standards for high quality wayfinding both during construction and for a unified system upon completion. The Master Plan encompasses all aspects of the airport’s interior and exterior signage system. Terminal balancing and renovation, as well as a new concourse, were key aspects of the project. The wayfinding and system standards are documented in 13 design chapters, which will be used as new projects come online.

As part of the PDX Signage Design Standards project, which outlines a long-term wayfinding strategy for removing, relocating, and adding new and temporary signage, EXD redesigned signage and wayfinding in the airport’s short- and long-term parking.
The new signage and wayfinding system is designed to be flexible and inclusive; colors, icons and words are combined for a multi-level approach to wayfinding. Symbols like an umbrella, a Chinook salmon and a Douglas Fir all pay homage to the Pacific Northwest, reinforcing this iconic airport’s sense of place.

Wayfinding & Signage
The wing-shaped extension of Terminal 5 at O’Hare International Airport, bathed in natural light, is set to become the gateway to Chicago for many travelers. This is the terminal’s first major expansion since it opened in 1993. It’s a significant first step in the O’Hare 21 program, which aims to modernize one of the world’s most-traveled airports.
Experience Design was engaged for signage and wayfinding on this project. The team conceived and designed an innovative and flexible signage solution housed in the terminal’s air columns, essential structures that regulate temperature and airflow. Digital screens were applied to the exterior of these columns, consolidating many different sign-type needs into one updateable structure. Digital advertisements, gate identifiers, boarding information, and arrival and departure information can be updated on these columns depending on the needs of the day.

Sustainability Display
The design for the LEED signage at Sea-Tac Airport focuses on the importance of sustainability for the Port of Seattle and actions the Port has taken to improve sustainability. Information is located at levels for both children and adults and audiences can skim the information or delve deeper.
The linear timeline implies movement and each individual element is part of the larger story of the Port’s sustainability ideology. While the piece is minimal and simple, shifts in scale for the iconography and type provide interest. The Port of Seattle brand is references through color and font selection and materials were chosen to compliment the new terminal architecture.
