The JW Marriott Indianapolis Downtown – the largest JW Marriott in the world – is a new five-star, 34-story hotel that houses 1,005 guest rooms and serves the recently expanded Indiana Convention Center, the new Lucas Oil Stadium, numerous nearby museums and the entire downtown Indianapolis area. HOK’s design for the new hotel with interiors by SDDG pays homage to its setting through site orientation, massing and materials. Located at the southern edge of the downtown area, the hotel is characterized by a 30-story tower clad in a blue, jewel-like glass rising above a 4-story podium to create a modern new landmark that defines the City of Indianapolis. Despite its size, design of this new structure is sensitive to the pedestrian scale. It draws, contextually, upon its proximity to the old downtown area through its artful use of multicolored masonry and Indiana limestone at the base.
“My father envisioned an iconic and timeless design that would give back to the people of Indiana and city of Indianapolis. HOK has done an outstanding job making his vision a reality. - Bruce White, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of White Lodging

The Hilton Columbus is a new 500-room convention center hotel in downtown Columbus. The project is a collaboration between the Franklin County Commissioners, Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority, City of Columbus and Nationwide Realty Investors, Inc. In keeping with the historic Arena District area and downtown, the 10-story building employs a mixed facade of glass and masonry. The interior is defined by a soaring atrium designed to let in maximum daylight and organizes the amenity spaces within a surround of guest rooms above. Additional features of the hotel include a 12,000-square-foot ballroom and a restaurant seating 400 people. In addition, HOK has designed an all-glass elevated pedestrian walkway that directly connects the new hotel and the convention center. HOK is the design architect and architect-of-record for the new hotel and bridge. SDDG and Moody Nolan were consultants to HOK for the interiors. Working closely with Strategic Advisory Group and the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority.
“We considered a number of excellent firms for this assignment, but HOK really stood out from the crowd. - Jeff Sachs, Managing Partner Strategic Advisory Group

This three-hotel project was introduced to accommodate the growing hospitality demand throughout the Chicago River North area. This development is the first high-rise select service hotel in Chicago that consists of 3 separate, competing hotel brands under one roof: a Hyatt Place, Fairfield Inn & Suites and an Aloft Hotel. The three hotels have 212, 180 and 272 guest rooms, respectively, for a total of 664 guest rooms. To contextually respond to the mid-rise neighborhood of older historic and newer mixeduse architecture, and to give each brand a distinct and memorable address, the external massing and expression presents 3 separate buildings from the exterior. Quite unique in the industry is each brand will share amenity, basement public spaces and back of house service functions (invisible to the hotel guest) to provide high-level, consistent operation for the entire enterprise. The exterior materials of the hotel are a mixture of stone, glass, metal and pre-cast concrete panels, reinforcing the fabric of the surrounding architecture. Additionally, the project was designed to achieve LEED certification and is LEED Silver pending.

HOK was selected by White Lodging Services Corporation to provide full architectural design services for a paired hotel project in downtown Chicago. The new hotel is a 523-room Marriott product located in the River North district, a part of the city well known for its fine restaurants, upscale shopping, residential lofts, art galleries and furniture showrooms – all just two blocks from Michigan Avenue and the Merchandise Mart. The site is situated at a highly visible corner in the district and is the first and most visible component of a larger HOK master plan. The new hotel is 30 stories in height and is the first implementation of a high-rise version of two of Marriott’s most successful products – Residence Inn and SpringHill Suites. This Marriott upgrade, with regard to amenities and design standards, aims to compete in the urban downtown setting. HOK designed each hotel to have its own unique massing and design character, while sharing common service functions. SDDG worked with HOK on the development of the interiors. A 10,000-square-foot private penthouse residence is included in the project. The ground floor includes upscale dining and retail space.

The new Louisville Downtown Marriott Hotel connects directly to the 300,000-square-foot Kentucky International Convention Center. HOK’s design for the new facility balances a contemporary character with a surrounding historic district of existing 19th century commercial structures. Several historic buildings on-site were repositioned and preserved as part of a successful adaptive re-use of one corner of the site. This Marriott includes 616 guest rooms and suites, over 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space and a 700-space underground parking garage. Located one block from a new entertainment district, the hotel location is ideally situated at the center of new downtown development, yet only minutes from the Airport. Design Continuum Inc. worked with HOK on the interiors.
