Optimizing Innovation


An Innovation Center in Need of Refresh and Renewal

Humana’s innovation center is located in their iconic headquarters building in Louisville, Kentucky. Though recently constructed, the treadmill of change in US healthcare required evolution in both the topics and messages presented. There was also an opportunity to embellish and extend existing messaging. Almost all of the optimization efforts are additive, leveraging the existing investment.

Some of the additive elements are furniture tools and lighting fixtures, paired with enhancements to the space plan. Though these changes are supporting in their role, the primary emphasis is advancing the storytelling aspects of the space. The additive messages range from destination naming to how-to-use-this-space instructions to team identity for each workforce resident on the floor. Messages about nutrition are added to the café pantry; messages about sustainability are added to areas for printers and supplies. Messages about teaming and the Humana community of associates are added to the break room. The most critical enhancements were an expansion upon the exemplary personas. These demographic avatars act as vehicles for the stories that profile Humana’s impact on the arc of its customer’s lives. In these designs, depth is broadened and character is enriched. The other impactful addition is the recording setting (standing in front of the letter “U” in Humana), which allowed associates and visitors to add their personal insights to the innovations desired of healthcare and well-being.

Recommended Enhancements Vision Building™ Rapid immersion leading to rapid conceptualization. Working with a client approved agenda, the process of rapid immersion begins with stakeholder interviews and facilitated group discussions. Open dialogue and free discussion are often best facilitated in less formal settings. Pointing to the informality of the sketchbook product best sets the tone for our Vision Building™ dialogues and the resultant possibilities thinking. A review of the interview results with project patrons precedes the initiation of the sketched concepts that respond to the spoken ideas and desires. Possibilities Sketchbook™ An interview and ideation technique for a speed dial, drive-thru world. This quickly recorded sketchbook of ideas documents the possibility thinking about all the image, message, packaging, and communication issues that could play a part in this project’s success (yet in its “sketchiness” it still suggests a lot about flexibility going forward). These sketch pages freeze spoken concepts as pictures and allow them to live, morph, and link. Each page is a tree and the combined booklet is the forest—allowing us to see both. Getting our interview concepts down on paper allows us to test consensus on each idea, prioritize need, and strategize procurement. This casual format is approachable and inviting of client interaction. The rapidity allows every client idea to be easily recorded and evidenced (yet de-personalized in its presentation). Strategized Experiences Scripting a consistent organizational personality in three dimensions. We can employ a thematic story that verbally and visually ties up diverse human activities into a sense of place. We also want multi-site clients to experience a consistent organizational personality in their environments (whether it be headquarters or briefing centers or training centers or proof of concept labs or showrooms or systems house tours or an R + D workscape or a customer demo center). What we are offering is environment design that supports any number of scripted and strategized experiences that result in visitors downloading specific and overall on-brand knowledge about a commercial culture.
