Brand Vocabulary and Iconography MEDCO VANGUARD
COLOR PALETTE
TYPOGRAPHY
The upper portion of the “d” in Medco’s logo was clipped and rotated to create the “Vanguard”. This is the primary icon of the G3 tour and symbolizes Medco’s forward advancement in cutting edge technology as well as the marketplace. The bottom corner was also rounded to reference the “humanistic” side of Medco’s business while the remaining hard corners symbolize the scientific precision of their processes.
Another element in the “kit of parts” for the G3 experience graphics is the color palette. The primary color HOK has chosen for the graphics is Medco Cyan which is used throughout the background of most displays. This color, in combination with the developed pattern, allows graphic compositions to look and feel technological and modern.
The font family used in the graphics throughout the G3 experience is called “TheSans”, Medco’s standard font. An example of each font within the family is shown below.
AaBbCcDdEe 1234567890 TheSans Plain
AaBbCcDdEe 1234567890 TheSans SemiBold
AaBbCcDdEe 1234567890
PMS Process Cyan C
TheSans Bold
Secondary colors of Medco Blue and Medco Gray are used in conjunction with Medco Cyan to create subtle shifts in hues throughout each of the displays. TheSans SemiBold for room signs
MEDCO SQUARES To add to the graphics “kit of parts” for the G3 experience, HOK incorporated a square with rounded corners as a supporting element to the main icon. While this shape has a long tradition of use within the scientific community in periodic tables, charts, etc., we have customized this version by adding the rounded, bottom right corner to reference the main icon. An isometric version of the Medco Square was also developed. It is a visual bridge between the Vanguard and Square that can be seamlessly incorporated into graphic patterns where appropriate.
PMS 2728 C
PMS 431 C
Medco Orange is used as a tertiary color for some of the displays on the tour. It functions as an accent color and never dominates any of the graphics.
TheSans SemiBold for headings and titles on smaller display graphics
TheSans Plain for body copy on smaller display graphics TheSans Bold for large ceiling banners
Parallel edges typical
TheSans Plain for large murals with short messages PMS 144 C
TheSans Bold for added contrast

R RM QSQRAщLABщJщRW The lobby is nondescript and looks somewhat dated; Medco identity is hardly visible. The impression is a
well maintained facility that has been pushed beyond its refresh date. Circulation is confusing – with so few views to exterior it becomes difficult to orientate oneself. The 1980’s IBM approach to enclosed offices on the glass and high cubicle workstations on the interior is definitive of 20th century workscape—not of the 21st. The three floors are color-coded in finish (paint and carpet), though it is hard to recognize that coding without being told. The few Medco identified messages are banners that seem both temporal and frugal. The message is one of impermanent occupancy – as if this is purposeful and part of a facilities exit strategy. There are few discernible identifications of team or departmental identity beyond sign plaques.
