The road to a healthier you

Juan Fourneau, one of our writers, enjoyed a very interesting conversation with a personal trainer originally from Venezuela who resides in Muscatine, IA (story on page 16). She told us about some of the unique barriers that the Latino community faces on the road to a healthier lifestyle. I learned even more when I read the story about a mother of two in Marshalltown, IA who started her weight loss journey for the sake of her family and children (story onpage 22). I’ve been working on my weight loss journey for many years, but the last couple of years have been very challenging. Losing weight has become harder the older I get. I’ve tried dieting and exercising but have not had success losing weight the last 18 months.

Then my friends at Iowa IV in Des Moines suggested that I try Semaglutide, a weight loss medication. I was skeptical at first, but I’m glad I tried it. I lost over 20lbs in the first 11 weeks, but I think my biggest victory was that I was able to lower my glucose and my A1C levels. (see page 8)

Everyone’s road to a healthier lifestyle is different, and to quote the mother from Marshalltown, “Go for it. If it doesn’t happen the first time, start again,” she said. “Find a reason why and set goals. Be patient with yourself, remember you didn’t get here overnight, so it will take time. Most importantly appreciate the marvelous things your body is capable of.”

If you, like me, are trying to make a change, I hope the stories in this issue give you a little guidance and inspiration to take your first step toward a healthier you.
