Year 4 No. 37
A New Year, a healthier you The Christmas season for most of us translates into a very hectic time — a season marked by overeating, overshopping and overindulgence. With that said, and to get off on a good foot, we decided that our next issue will be appropriately dedicated to health and wellness so you can achieve a healthier you. Each year, we resolve to better ourselves in some way, but many of us find it hard to stay on track. If you can remember back in the day it was quite simple: discipline. Now technology offers all kinds of New Year’s Resolutions apps that can help you make them a reality like: Shed those pounds, Diet Assistant and BMI calculator to name a few. To me, it’s too much information. I like simplicity; less is more and can many times be a blessing in disguise. This Holiday season spend more time with family and friends the simply good ole fashion way, with good ole fashion human contact. Turn off your phones and electronic gadgets and see how much more fun life can be without them. Apply the time you normally spent on a cell phone to going to the gym, educating yourself, or spending more time with your family and you’ll be pleasantly surprised that your holiday season will take on a whole new meaning. It may take rehab for many of us electronic addicts. Simply try yoga to help kick the nasty habit. Have a blessed holiday and a prosperous New Year!

Andrew Weil, MD

From Medication to Meditation
Meditación: La Mejor Medicina
It is well known that stress has become a major contributing factor in the cause of disease, with some studies attributing up to eighty percent of disease to stress. From the Ayurvedic point of view, the cause of disease is attributed to “the mistake of the intellect”. This occurs when the mind begins to see itself as separate from the field of intelligence or consciousness from which it came from. The main goal in Ayurveda is to eradicate disease through purifying the mind and body, so that we achieve our full human potential. To accomplish this, stress would have to be eliminated from one’s day to day life.
Under stress, our heart beats faster; our blood pressure increases; our breath becomes shallow and rapid; our blood sugar rises; we produce adrenalin and cortisol; our immune system weakens; our digestion is halted. No wonder why chronic stress accelerates aging and makes us more vulnerable to serious illness, including heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, panic attacks, immune deficiency, depression, stomach ulcers, chronic fatigue, and migraines. One of the most effective stress-relieving practices is meditation. A regular practice helps you go beyond turbulence, releasing stress, fatigue, and emotional turmoil. Meditation gives you the experience of pure, restful awareness. As you meditate, the bodily reactions are exactly the opposite of the stress response: your breathing slows, blood pressure decreases, and stress hormone levels fall. Taking time to quiet your mind will enable you to stay more centered and balanced when things do not go the way you want. When you respond consciously, rather than reacting angrily, you more effectively meet your needs. I always recommend my clients to take between 15 to 30 minutes every morning and every late afternoon to close your eyes and focus on the breathing, alternating with feeling the heart beat and practice gratitude. This is a simple but effective technique that with regular practice, could become your best medicine to balance your health and your life. I welcome you to join us Tuesdays through Fridays at 6pm in our group meditation.

Benefits of Early Dental Check-ups for Children A complete dental examination that includes x-rays can spot upcoming dental problems early. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that your child receive an orthodontic check-up by no later than age seven. By this age, major orthodontic problems can be identified and treated while some baby teeth are still present. This is important because some orthodontic problems can be easily corrected when diagnosed and treated at an early age. Most orthodontic patients begin active braces treatment between the ages of nine and 14. Early orthodontic treatment can prevent more serious problems from arising and may make treatment at an older age less complicated. In some cases, the doctor can achieve results, which would not be possible once the face and jaws have already finished growing. By getting early treatment, jaw growth can be guided, harmful oral habits can be corrected to avoid further damage to the jaws and bite and the appearance and self-esteem of your child can be improved. Early orthodontic treatment can reduce and sometimes even eliminate the need for full orthodontic treatment (Braces) or surgery. What are the signs that indicate that you child may need orthodontic treatment? According to the American Association of Orthodontics, the following are early warning signs: • Early loss of baby teeth • Late loss of baby teeth • Difficulty chewing • Breathing through the mouth

Out of the Box Decorating Ideas to bring in the New Year
This year, add a unique twist to your New Year’s Eve decorations. Bring your heritage into the décor. Let’s say your family’s background is Colombian. In addition to the typical New Year’s decorations that everyone displays, add the following: Create a centerpiece of fresh grapes to honor the Colombian tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Set bottles of champagne with washcloths wrapped around them. Colombians pour champagne over their body at midnight for prosperity. Decorate the house with old and new empty suitcases. Colombians run around the block with empty suitcases on New Year’s Eve so they’ll have a year filled with travel. Colombian custom also says to wear yellow underwear on the New Year. Wrap paper napkins in a pair of yellow underwear and use as a funny gift to take home. Bring out old and new family photos. Display them everywhere even on the dinner table. Find out about your own ancestors’ New Year’s Eve customs and add that extra layer of family heritage to the decorations. It will add fun and memorable storytelling. Plus, if you’re Colombian, your guests will never forget the yellow underwear napkins. Deborah Rosenberg, interior decorator. o:786-629-9581 www. DiMareDesign.com, www.Ddigz.com

Considering breast augmentation in the New Year? Breast augmentation, or increasing the size of the breasts by placing breast implants, is a surgical procedure which Dr. Rotemberg performs to enhance the size and also shape of a woman’s breasts. Reasons to consider breast augmentation: • correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy • balance a difference in breast size and shape • as a reconstructive procedure following breast surgery BREAST AUGMENTATION BASICS: What types of implants are currently available? Dr. Rotemberg: All breast implants currently available in the United States are silicone shells filled with either saline (sterile salt water) or with silicone gel. The United States Food and Drug Administration determined in November of 2006 that silicone breast implants are safe for cosmetic breast augmentation. Though still a matter of personal preference, silicone breast implants are rapidly becoming the more popular option for breast augmentation procedures. Silicone filled breast implants are FDA approved for women age 22 and older.
HOLA LATINOS P.30 Belleza Beauty
Where is the implant placed? Dr.R: Implants can be placed above or below the pectoralis muscle. Depending on your body type and exercise routine your doctor will choose the best position for the implants. Most implants are placed submuscular, below the muscle. The main advantage of placing the implants in a subglandular pocket or above the muscle is a shorter, more comfortable recover. However, this tend to make the implants more noticeable with increased palpability (you can feel more when you touch) and increased visibility (more rippling and wrinkling). This is not a good option for women with thin skin or little breast tissue. When implants are placed submuscular or below the muscle, patients have a more natural looking and feeling result. Since the implant is placed underneath the muscle, an increased discomfort from stretching the muscle is felt initially, but usually after two weeks the discomfort subsides. Where are the incisions located?
What size implant is better for me?
Dr.R: Implants can be placed thru different incisions in your body; it depends on your body type. We can use a periareolar incision for women with large areolas, an inframmary incision, the one on the bra line or arm pit incision.
Dr.R: Choosing a breast implant size will depend on your body shape and breast width. If you are looking for a natural look breast augmentation your doctor will measure your chest and will give you a range of sizes you can choose from that will fit your breast diameter. It is important to discuss with your doctor your expectations and what you are looking for with the operation.
The periareolar incision is a small incision made along the lower border of the areola. This approach allows the surgeon direct access to the internal anatomy of the breast and can be re-used in case of subsequent breast surgery. This incision tends to heal nicely, leaving minimal scaring on the breasts. This incision is ideal for women who have less developed breast fold or tuberous breast deformity.
The inframammary incision is made beneath the breast in the natural fold where the breast meets the ribcage. This approach often results in a faint, well camouflaged scar, hidden within the bra line and breast fold. It is the most commonly used incision for breast augmentation, it offers the surgeon good access for placing the implant with minimal disruption to the breast tissue. The transaxillary or armpit incision can be used for placement of implants. This exposure is farthest from the internal anatomy of the breast. In any event the implant needs to be removed or exchanged; you will need to have another incision in your breast.

Do I need to stop smoking?
Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery & Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr.R: Yes, you need to stop smoking at least 2 weeks prior to surgery and not resume for at least two weeks after surgery. What medications do I need to stop before surgery? Dr.R: You have to stop any anti-inflammatory medication like Aspirin, ibuprofen (motrin, advil), Aleve, Celebrex, vitamin E, herbal supplements two weeks prior to surgery. You can take Tylenol for any headache or pain before surgery. How long do implants last? Dr.R: Implants are not permanent and will likely need to be replaced with subsequent surgery 10-15 years later whether silicone or saline. Can I lose nipple sensation or have numbness in the breast after surgery? Dr.R: It is not uncommon to have some sensory changes after breast augmentation, especially if there is a large implant. Most of the time the sensation will come back, usually after 6 months, especially if the implant was placed under the muscle. However, it is acceptable to have loss of nipple sensation with breast augmentation. It range from 5-10% with the inframammary incision and higher with the periareolar incision.

Villana o Heroína, siempre cautivadora
Marjorie De Sousa
Marjorie de Sousa is a stunning Venezuelan actress and model worldwide known for her roles in telenovelas. She is on the list of People en Español’s “50 most beautiful” 2014. Marjorie is passionate about her work and says she is quite perseverant. She claims the love of her life is her mom and is a big supporter of animal rights organization such as PETA Latino. Por/By: Nancy Esteves

ello and Happy Holidays! My name is Elio I was born and raised in Trani Italy. Dreams have a price; a price that can sometimes be much higher than you expected. When I made the decision to pursue my dreams as a fitness model I had to leave behind everything that was important to me: friends, family and love. At the age of 18 I started studying acting and cinematography in Bologna, Italy while I worked as a personal trainer (my every day job). During this time I enjoyed participating in a few local films, but was also approached with my first modeling opportunity. I modeled for a men’s underwear catalog, followed with fashion shootings for various Italian brands which eventually led to working as a fitness model for Duemila Magazine. Having found a passion for fitness modeling and being driven by the desire to challenge myself, I left my country with the determination to chase and fulfill my dreams at any cost. I now live in Miami where I’ve started taking the first steps towards my goal doing print advertising for men’s underwear, as a fitness model and occasionally acting in small roles for Telemundo and Venevision. Some of my recent work includes a commercial for AT & T and winning the largest amount of votes that has taken me to the next stage of a contest to be “Mr. Duntless”, a men’s fashion line out of Washington, DC. My main focus right now is to prepare for the NPC men’s physique competition, which is my next big step towards my goal of being one of the best fitness models in the US. Today I reside in Miami Beach and dedicate my life to motivating others to overcome their insecurities and fears by helping them transform their bodies, led by the power of the mind. Romeo Romeo Renegade Bark Thou
Merry Furry Howlidays & Meowlidays By: Annette Reine & Romeo –– Romeo@ Castapet.com Renegade in Picture above
Howldy! Getting ready for the Holidays? Sometimes I wish I lived up North where I could see the leaves change and create yellow snow. If I were blind which many pets as they age do become I would be so sad. I may not be able to walk on all fours but I do have 20/20. We received an early Xmas gift the other day with the presence of Renegade. He has the most gorgeous blue eyes. My Mom heard him barking on the side of our house, when she went outside Nancy was there with this beautiful big dog. He approached her when she was bringing in her groceries. We later found out he is deaf. His good senses kicked in and he knew right where to go when he was lost to my Mom Annette and Nancy two animal lovers. They directed him through our white gate. First he hesitated then he nodded and came through the gate and into our house. He sniffed the tiny cat toys then went right for the larger dog toys and proceeded to the back yard where he galloped like a pony. My Mom went inside to design found dog flyers when she returned Renegade was sitting in her vintage chair with a stuffed animal in his mouth.. Thank goodness she had the brains to call Dalmatian Rescue in North Miami. Right when she and Nancy hung up the second flyer she received a call from Patty that she found Renegade’s Mom. We thought we were going to have to play fetch forever. We slept good that night and so did Renegade.zzzzz! Deaf dogs do very well just like me a paralyzed dog, our worldly view is different. We communicate in a different order than humans whose hearing seeing and smelling are in a 123 sequence. A dog segquence is smelling seeing and hearing. A dogs sense of smell is able to sum up a lot about a person and its surroundings. When Renegade sniffed my Mom and Nancy he trusted us. When grooming a deaf dog do not cut off its whiskers they use this to sense their distance around them. I wasn’t born paralyzed however I don’t dwell that I cannot walk anymore. A dog that is born deaf does not know any different. My Mom does not treat me like I have a disability and for that reason I have become strong and confident. For dogs it is all about let’s play lets go out lick your face and let’s eat. After designing the flyers Renegade jumped up gently and hugged and kissed her he was so grateful she returned. Dogs can tell when a person has emotional issues. As a dog our instincts are to live in packs with one as a hierarchy. You can teach a deaf dog hand signals, to heel on a lead and to enter and exit all door and gateways after you. Be calm and confident. Make sure your pet has a name tag indicating it is deaf with your number. Some dog breeds have a higher rate of being deaf than others such as the English Setters, Jack Russell, Dalmatians and the Catahoula Leopard like Renegade. If you think your dog may be deaf wait until your dog is asleep and make a noise behind him make sure they cannot see you move or feel vibrations. If your dog seems to be ignoring you or doesn’t recognize you pouring food as usual you may want to test their hearing with the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response procedure BAER. When pets age their hearing becomes faint they cannot hear a car or danger approaching. Put a bell on their collar and flash the porch light for them to come in. Deaf dogs bond with their pet parents and may seem needy but when they hug and kiss you and give you that puppy dog look the gushing gue in your heart makes it all worthwhile. If you have an empty spot in your heart that needs to be filled you may want to adopt 1 Dalmatian not 101 Dalmatians! Visit Patty at http://www.dalmatianrescue.com

Florida State vs. University of Miami A CLASSIC! There are many that say that Miami is not a good “college football town”; you would not even imagine this was possible if you were at sold-out Sun Life Stadium on Saturday Nov 15th for the Florida State University Seminoles vs. University of Miami Hurricanes rivalry match. The tailgating started early in the day for an 8:00 pm kickoff. All fans were dressed (at times almost undressed) representing their teams. Cooking, drinking, partying and just having a great time. The game was one of the most memorable this year and will become one of the classics. FSU came in as the favorite, undefeated and ranked #1 in the polls with its star and controversial quarterback, Winston. University of Miami, mostly freshmen with a lot of passion and a good defense, the underdogs of course, startled the Florida State team and fans, when at half time the score was 23-10 in Miami’s favor. In the end, Jameis Winston’s Heisman passing accuracy won the game in the 4th quarter, FSU 30 – MIA 26 was the final score. Everyone left this rivalry happy and satisfied. Miami knows it has what it take to be a viable contender, looking forward to next year when all the freshmen have matured. Florida State finished the game with a win, on track to compete for their second straight National Championship.
University of Miami entering the field to a standing ovation!
