PLANNING THE PERFECT EDUCATIONAL FIELD EXPEDITION

Your partner in international education Our founder Giovanna Holbrook pioneered one of the first educational tours to the Galápagos Islands when she gathered a group of scientists, professors and natural history enthusiasts to explore the archipelago. Holbrook Travel was created a few years later in 1974, and since then we’ve taken thousands of students and educators to the far corners of the world. Today, we continue her mission by offering students the opportunity to learn through experience. Our staff travels annually to meet with our expert local guides, inspect sites, and evaluate lodgings to ensure that each program meets our benchmarks for safety, academic standards, and value.

Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve Nature center, classroom, and laboratory! Established by Giovanna Holbrook in 1985, Selva Verde’s sustainable eco-lodge and private rainforest reserve are the ideal base camp for educational field programs in ecology, conservation, community development, and culture. In partnership with the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, we can help you design a course to meet the academic needs of your student group. Learn more on page 36

What our travelers are saying We’ll fill your trip with experiences that will last a lifetime — but don’t just take our word for it. Here’s some of the feedback we’ve had from other teachers who have traveled with us recently. To read more, visit holbrooktravel.com/testimonials

I can honestly say that there was not a single moment I did not enjoy. Everything went on without any glitches. All of my participants had a fabulous time, as did I. One of my students on the last night asked, “Do we have to leave?” — TRACY B. Teacher Southeast High School Costa Rica expedition

Everything was absolutely amazing. Even though we only had one week, it felt as though we accomplished so much and really saw the Belize cultures and history.

This trip was a very valuable use of time. I got to see two very interesting cities, and not only did I learn some science about the area, I got to learn its history. The lodge was beautiful, and all the activities were fun.

Sarapiquí, Costa Rica

Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve Make the rainforest your classroom Owned and operated by the Holbrook Travel family, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest.

The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. It took almost one year to raise the money, but by 1985 Giovanna was able to return to Costa Rica and buy the land. The once endangered forest became a private rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first eco-lodges, Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve.

“

Selva Verde is a fabulous place and we have seen and learned so much. In just three days we have seen huge iguanas, an armadillo, three types of frog, two of them the poison dart variety, a keel-billed toucan, hummingbirds (precioso!), striped squirrels, many different types of butterfly, kiskadee birds, lizards, golden orb spiders and the type and variety of plant life too numerous to list. The colors, shapes and forms of these glorious plants are mind-blowing. — HILLARY MINOR

Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center

SCLC

Supporting the local community The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center was established in 1993 by Holbrook Travel and Selva Verde Lodge Founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter. As one of Costa Rica’s pioneering eco-lodges, Selva Verde is committed to a sustainable future — not only for the lodge, but for the people and wildlife that call the Sarapiquí region home. Selva Verde actively works with conservation partners, including the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, to promote conservation and environmental education throughout the local community. Funded in part by its ecotourism activities, the SCLC is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects. SCLC’s projects, which are run by international volunteers and community members, include environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, community outreach, women’s groups, and scholarship funds for high school students.

South America ARGENTINA From the Andean northwest to the lush grazing grounds of the plains to the vast and awe-inspiring Patagonia region, Argentina is a richly beautiful nation with a wide variety of terrain. BRAZIL This Portuguese-speaking nation occupies almost half of the South American continent and is home to pristine beaches, Amazonian rainforests, bustling metropolises, and incredible landscapes. CHILE With the driest desert in the world and massive glaciers, Chile is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, but it is also a cosmopolitan nation with impressive literary history and cultural traditions. ECUADOR Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in a delicate balance. The unique flora and fauna of the Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835. PERU Peru was notably home to the Inca — an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their Empire.

I have had the opportunity to take girls to Hawaii, Guatemala, and Iceland through the Girl Scout destinations program and Holbrook Travel. All of these experiences were amazing for the girls and for the chaperones. When I tell people that I have taken girls to locations like these I always hear things like, “Wow, that must have been a lot of work for you to organize everything!” I just reply, “Nope, it was easy. Holbrook Travel takes care of everything for me.” And that is the absolute truth… It is great that the chaperones can just worry about making sure the girls are having the time of their lives, which of course they do. — LESLEY R.
