COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Dear friends, As I read through the travel stories in these pages, I’m excited to share this year’s calendar with you, our travel community. It’s a chance to reflect on some of the special memories we’ve created together, to look with anticipation to the year ahead, and to reach out and connect with our friends around the country and the world. I hope you’ll enjoy the stories behind the photographs chosen for this calendar; each recounts a moment captured in time. In Peru, Paloma Bone describes the scene at Machu Picchu: "Standing 1,000 feet above, I felt awe viewing the expanse of the ruins." (February) David Hoitt shares the technique for capturing his Cuba time-lapse photo in Havana (October). "I made this 30-second night time exposure using a tripod-mounted camera. The moving cars painted light trails in the long exposure image and a small aperture produced starbursts around the headlights."

All around the globe, Holbrook travelers have made important connections in the communities they visit: young birders discovering the tropics with the Hog Island Teen Camp, educators collaborating at the Global Education Leadership Conference, and Penn State University students engaging with environmental scientists in Cuba – just to name a few!

I was fortunate to participate on several programs in the field myself, including a recent trip to Peru where we met with families and shared stories (and music!). In the Bahamas, I was able to see firsthand the exciting work being done by National Audubon Society to provide guide training to improve incomes of local inhabitants and help conserve natural resources. This past year we were pleased to expand our partnership with Aubudon on the Flyway Expeditions program, which protects important migratory flyways and generates income to local communities. Our work with Climb for Cancer has helped raise funds for cancer research through hiking trips around the globe (anyone can join!). With the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST) and the UN, we helped sponsor World Tourism Day on September 27, to recognize 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism. It was heartening to see real results on travel’s impact towards poverty reduction, environmental protection, and community education.

ABOUT THE IMAGE In the summer of 2017, I had the great fortune to accompany Professors Ann & Rob Simpson as a photography student on an amazing threeweek adventure to Ecuador. Galápagos Islands is a wonderful place to see nature up close and personal. This was a great opportunity for me as a student relatively new to photography to capture every detail of the gorgeous creatures that inhabit this island as they are protected and used to seeing people. Because they don’t feel threatened, they go about their lives as if you aren’t even there. I was able to get some incredible shots on this journey of a lifetime to include this Galápagos Sea Lion soaking up some rays and the Red-footed Booby snuggling with its chick resembling a dirty cotton ball with a face that only a mother (and me) could love. This trip definitely gave me the fever to travel more and see what the world has to offer. It also opened my eyes to ecotourism and the fight to protect the wildlife and the environment they so desperately need to survive. I am thankful to have a supportive family that let me go pursue this passion, the best professors, and to Holbrook for a trip I will never forget.

ABOUT THE IMAGE The hike to the peak of Huayna Picchu is not for the faint of heart: the trail is a switchback built by the Inca. Incredibly steep and narrow stairs, at times dropping sharply off the side of the mountain, make up the majority of the hike. There’s hardly any signage, nor is it staffed by park guides to direct hikers. This led me to summit the mountain via the back – an alternative route more suitable for mountain goats than the timid lost hiker. But as the saying goes, "one mountain, many paths," and so I managed to reach the summit of Huayna Picchu despite the detour.

This photo was taken after my return from the hike, while I was resting in the sanctuary of Machu Picchu. I snapped this shot in an attempt to scale down my experience of the ruins, focusing on the details of the buildings in juxtaposition with the birds-eye view I had just witnessed.

ABOUT THE IMAGE Patagonia changes you. In this land at the end of the world, the clear, sharp air permeates you and is driven marrow-deep by the forever wind. A land of stark contrasts, this is the home of colorful lupines, majestic Andean condors, and crystal blue glaciers that beckon in the distance. When winter grips the northern hemisphere, the Chilean summer bursts with frenzied color, giving way to carpets of lush wildflowers, nesting birds, and melting icebergs that calve thunderously into the arms of the icy water. Thriving in this unique environment, many of the plants and animals are found nowhere else on earth. Here you can see rare birds such as the striking Magellanic Woodpeckers, dancing Chilean Flamingos, sprinting Darwin's Rheas, and effervescent Magellanic Penguins. With dramatic scenery as a background, these colorful lupines made it easy for us to share "how to" tips with our photography group, such as how to get everything in focus from a few feet away to the Andes Mountains in the background. ABOUT THE IMAGE Having led groups to Kenya before, I was excited to have the chance to return to East Africa and visit northern Tanzania, including the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Much to my surprise, it was Tarangire National Park that stole my heart, with its healthy elephant herds, giraffe family groups, baobab trees, and lush vegetation from the recent rains. The Acacia woodlands and roadside bushes made bird observations exceptional, with cameras taking the place of binoculars for perfect viewing. It was in such an area that this spectacular 15-inch adult Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudata) landed on the top of a shrub and stuck a brief pose. Then it characteristically moved on to another perch in its search of small lizards and insects. I had first seen this species in Tsavo West National Park in Kenya on my first trip with Holbrook in 1985, but that view was nothing compared to this! john ferner

ABOUT THE IMAGE While exploring along the above ground pathway at Aninga Lodge, set in the wilds of Tortuguero, Costa Rica, the rustle of leaves and movement in overhead branches caught my attention. Could it be one of the many species of beautiful birds, one of the several species of monkeys, a shuffling sloth? Closer observation soon revealed that it was instead a very large Green Iguana lizard surprisingly quite nimble in its lofty perch. We had recently arrived at this jungle paradise after a breathtakingly scenic hour long boat ride on the river.

ABOUT THE IMAGE During a work trip for caye inspections in Belize, I was struck by the sheer number of conch shells that littered the white-sand beaches. I saw conch shells doubling as property dividers, as pathways, and even as a sort of natural sandbag to help with beach erosion. I heard tales of the beautiful pink conch pearl – the rarest of nature’s pearls – sometimes found inside the meat, extremely valuable and coveted by those harvesting them. Legal harvesting of Belize’s queen conch is from October to June, and subject to a variety of regulations. Conchs play an important role in the ocean ecosystem, so when you're traveling in Belize, avoid eating conch out of season, and avoid buying whole conch shells if you feel it was harvested solely for this purpose. Do purchase conch crafts made by artisans, or take a photo like I did — one morning on Glover’s Reef, admiring the beautiful pink pearly quality of the inner shell and wistfully wishing I could stay just a little longer keeping this queen company. ABOUT THE IMAGE This lioness appeared among the yellow wildflowers, which I later learned were bidens and aspilia, at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater. It was a bright sunny morning, and the vast sea of yellow flowers against the blue walls of the crater was just beautiful. She was stalking two adult Cape Buffalo who were traveling with a young Cape Buffalo between them. At first she was focused on her prey and and only glanced our way a few times. She later joined a pride of lions and disappeared into a depression. A cloud of dust suggested the hunt was successful. RUDY GARNS

ABOUT THE IMAGE On the second day of our Holbrook Costa Rica birding trip, we made a stop at a small roadside restaurant at Cinchona Mirador to watch the bird feeders. At first, the Northern Emerald-Toucanet was retiring until the bananas were replenished. Unable to resist temptation, he finally came in for extended looks and photos from the excited flock of assembled birders and photographers. After filling up, he soon departed and the group took this as its cue to enjoy the delicious Costa Rican coffee or the local agua dulce on offer. Having recharged our batteries, we were off to the next birding spot of the day. lance runion

ABOUT THE IMAGE The iconic Hotel Nacional de Cuba sits high above the Malecón, Havana’s inimitable seaside boulevard and promenade. A steady procession of classic American cars shuttles guests to and from the hotel, day and night. I made this 30-second night time exposure of the front entrance using a tripod-mounted camera. The moving cars painted light trails in the long exposure image and a small aperture produced starbursts around the headlights. The Hotel Nacional is equally stunning in the daytime. Taxi drivers awaiting customers are very approachable and are eager to show off their classic American cars. Few cars are still “stock”: most exemplify clever solutions to mechanical problems without access to replacement parts. Owners demonstrate pride in their automobiles by giving them a thorough polish and waxing as evidenced by the 1955 Pontiac image below. The photographic subjects in Havana seem endless: classic cars, architecture, music, landscapes, street life, and more. Havana is truly a photographers’ paradise, day and night!

ABOUT THE IMAGE The picturesque fishing village of Hermanus, South Africa, is one of the few places in the world where you can stand on land and get really good looks at southern right whales, humpbacks and Bryde’s whales. In fact, it’s one of the twelve best whale-watching spots in the world. The leviathans frolic and laze in the combers just offshore. Meanwhile, cliffdwelling rock hyraxes, rabbit-sized relatives of manatees and elephants, scamper through fantastic rock formations at the sea’s edge. I spotted this man walking toward the hyrax colony with a bag of carrots, and settled back to watch as the animals congregated to greet him. His gnomelike attire gave the perfect shot of color and surreality to the scene. I tried to approach to ask him a few questions about his relationship with the hyrax colony, but he wouldn’t acknowledge me, so I withdrew. Perhaps he felt uncomfortable speaking English rather than his native Afrikaans; perhaps this communion with the animals is his church. Who was I to break the companionable silence? I felt honored to have witnessed his communion with hyraxes.

ABOUT THE IMAGE Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Education Expedition marveled at these spectacular hexagonal basalt columns along the black sand beach in Reynisfjara, Iceland. From beehives to columnar basalt formed by slow cooling of lava, mathematics finds its way into science through hexagons! I kept the person in the photo for perspective as the scale of these geometric igneous columns was so magnificent. The Fridheimar Tomato Greenhouse, a stop on our trip through Iceland's Golden Triangle, grows delicious tomatoes year round using geothermal energy. After a presentation on their unique approach to horticulture, we dined on fresh tomato soup. Lunch among tomato plants in a warm greenhouse made for a unique and memorable dining experience!

ABOUT THE COVER IMAGE Many people plan a trip to Costa Rica to relax on palm-decorated tropical beaches, glide over forest canopies on adrenaline-pumping zip lines, or adventure down white water rivers on a bounding raft. However, we come here to experience nature at its best. A photographer's paradise, the varied Costa Rican ecosystems offer stunning scenics, misty cloud forests, and lush waterfall-ribboned rainforests, such as Catarata del Toro shown here. Colorful birds, charismatic monkeys, florescent morpho butterflies, and unending leaf-cutter ants revel within the multi-green forests. Holbrook Travel welcomes photography groups such as ours and we have found the guides go out of their way to help us find special birds, poison dart frogs, butterflies, and other wildlife.
