2018 Educational Travel Planner
Give your students the world 800-451-7111 | holbrooktravel.com | travel@holbrooktravel.com
Dear friends and educators, Education has always been at the heart of what we do, and I am constantly amazed at how travel experiences — taken at a formative age — last through time and become part of the person forever. I was recently reconnected with someone who traveled on a Holbrook trip as a student in 1975. “It was an absolute mind-blowing experience for a kid who grew up in Alabama and who had little chance to travel beyond the Southeast,” he said. “It truly was a life-changer for a young field biologist like me!” This is the most satisfying kind of feedback we can receive. I believe that meaningful travel starts with getting into the field and building relationships. Every year, I enjoy my travels to connect with our academic travel community and in-country experts. On a recent field workshop, for example, I was inspired by a number of young adults eager to share their passion for learning and exploration. For these reasons, I am pleased to provide you with our most in-depth Educational Travel Planner ever. Enclosed you will find tools for organizing a student group as well as a comprehensive collection of tried-and-true itineraries that connect classroom learning with a variety of disciplines and methodologies for field study. Designed with national academic standards in mind, our programs help students develop critical thinking skills and provide a real-world context for concepts learned in the classroom. We hope you will join us in the field this coming year and beyond. Our passion is to bring your travel experience alive through education, immersion, and active engagement in our destinations throughout the world. With every good wish,
An d r ea H ol b r o o k Pre s i d e nt, Ho lb r o o k Tr av el 2

Selva Verde Eco-Lodge and Rainforest Reserve
The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. Giovanna placed a deposit on the property on the spot and then embarked on an adventure that continues to this day.
Supporting the local community through service learning The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center was established in 1993 by Holbrook Travel and Selva Verde Lodge Founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter. As one of Costa Rica’s pioneering eco-lodges, Selva Verde is committed to a sustainable future — not only for the lodge, but for the people and wildlife that call the Sarapiquí home. Selva Verde actively works with conservation partners, including the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, to promote conservation and environmental education throughout the local community. 12
Funded in part by its ecotourism activities, the SCLC is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects. SCLC’s projects, which are run by international volunteers and community members, include environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, community outreach, women’s groups, and scholarship funds for high school students.
Our Costa Rica Lodge and Learning Center Make the rainforest your classroom Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest.
Designed for student learning Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve provides an exceptional backdrop to explore topics of natural history or to use the surrounding environment as part of your international teaching strategies for global literacy. Selva Verde’s private reserve is the perfect basecamp for educational field programs in ecology, conservation, community development, and culture.
As a control site for graduate, undergraduate, or advanced high school studies, the site is equipped with classrooms, dormitory accommodation, Wi-Fi, and a basic wet lab facility, offering an ideal backdrop for annual student studies in a variety of research applications. In conjunction with the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, we can help you design a course to meet the academic needs of your group.
Sustainable Tourism at Selva Verde The Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program (CST) was created by the Costa Rican government to promote sustainability in the tourism sector by defining standards to evaluate properties, promoting the CST brand in the minds of consumers, and providing benefits to properties that improve their sustainability. Selva Verde Lodge is proud to carry the CST certification for continued commitment to the local environment, wildlife, and community. 13
Other Academic Specialties At Holbrook, we believe travel is an important component of global understanding and action. In collaboration with national, state, and non-profit organizations we offer field workshops and seminars to help facilitate professional growth for teachers, professors, and other education specialists.
Professional Development Travel can do more than just change the way a person looks at the world; it can also enhance their skills and their ability to make the world a better place. Our primary goal for our international professional development programs is to provide enriching, affordable educational travel opportunities that are accessible to all teachers and professionals.
Our professional development workshops for science teachers and other like-minded professionals can provide opportunities to gather hands-on experience and firsthand exposure to new and exciting environments under the guidance of expert leaders. This type of travel requires more than just a suitcase - it involves the spirit, intellect, and emotions of the travelers.
These programs are specially designed to bring likeminded people together for firsthand exposure to new and exciting environments under the guidance of expert leaders. Through international experiential learning with expert guides, educators return to the classroom refreshed and reinvigorated, with in-depth subject knowledge and new skills.
Visit holbrooktravel.com/pd to see all of our professional development opportunities or to customize one of your own.
In addition to Holbrook’s own programs, we partner with national and state institutions to foster global learning initiatives on behalf of continued learning. Here’s just a sampling of the organizations we’ve cooperated with over the years:
14
Academic Credit and Continuing Education We partner with Lees-McRae College and University of the Pacific to provide students and educators the opportunity to earn academic credit at the pre-college, undergraduate, or graduate levels, as well as continuing education credits for professionals.
Global Literacy for Academic Leaders Teachers are expected to be globally literate and able to foster a worldwide perspective in the practice of teaching. Educators must be attuned
culturally, environmentally, and socially to the ever-changing landscape of the classroom and to the competitive global environment. About this trip Host a study abroad course at Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve, a 500 acre private tract of tropical lowland primary and secondary rainforest. Thirty years ago, rainforest stretched from Costa Rica’s Central Valley to the Atlantic coast. Today this area is a patchwork of small fincas, agricultural plantations, and a handful of rainforest reserves. Selva Verde is one of those reserves – providing a critical refuge for the many species that depend on the forest for survival. Our private reserve and eco-friendly accommodations are the ideal base camp for educational field programs in ecology, conservation, community development, and culture. In partnership with the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, an on-site non-profit organization, we can help you design a course to meet the academic needs of your group.

Ecuador Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in great harmony. It has everything from indigenous communities to metropolitan cities, and boasts diverse ecosystems that can take you from the Andean highlands to the Amazon rainforest.
Galápagos Islands The unique flora and fauna of Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835 and continues to inspire travelers who visit these enchanting islands today.
Peru Peru was notably home to the Inca — an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their empire.
