Dear friends and educators, I am often asked, “What’s different about Holbrook Travel?” Perhaps this can be best answered by encouraging you to turn the pages of our catalog. But it could also be summed up in our commitment to authentic educational experiences and responsible travel. My personal experience, first visiting the Galápagos with my family as a child and then in Costa Rica, has ingrained in me a respect and affinity for the natural world and the surrounding local communities. Now, with a daughter in high school, I have an additional perspective and can personally attest to the impact of experiential education on growing minds. Engaging youth and young adults to be global citizens is at the core of what we do. This year, nearly 45 years since our beginning in 1974, Holbrook is engaged more than ever in building on our longstanding relationships with our community of educators and educational partners. We’ve added new programs for 2018 and beyond and reinforced tried-andtrue itineraries with new educational connections. The Holbrook team is dedicated to working with educators to create enriching and affordable programs tailored to specific curricula. In this catalog, each program has been crafted based on certain academic connections, which you will find indicated on each program description. Developed with national standards in mind, our programs help students develop critical thinking skills and provide a real-world context for concepts learned in the classroom. In the 2018-2019 edition of our academic catalog, you will also find Professional Development programs for adults to build on their academic foundation and sharpen their field skills. Whether your academic focus is on Marine Science, Life and Earth Sciences, Natural History, Environmental Studies, or Social Sciences and Culture, our programs connect classroom learning with a variety of methodologies for field study.
We hope you will join us in the field this coming year and beyond. With every good wish,
An d r ea H ol b r o o k Pre s i d ent, H o lb r o o k Tr av e l 2

Other Academic Specialties Travel can do more than change the way a person looks at the world; it can also enhance their skills and their ability to make the world a better place. In addition to programs for students, we offer an array of opportunities for teachers, professors, and other education professionals in the form of international workshops, symposia, and professional development programs.
Global Literacy for Academic Leaders Educators are expected to be globally literate and able to foster a worldwide perspective in the practice of teaching. They must be attuned culturally, environmentally, and socially to the ever-changing landscape of the classroom and to the competitive global environment. With that in mind, we offer field programs for educators that cover topics including biology, environmental science, conservation, world cultures, marine science, geography, citizen science opportunities, hands-on research, and community service projects.
Professional Development Our primary goal for our international professional development programs is to provide enriching, affordable educational travel opportunities that are accessible to all. These programs are developed in collaboration with national, state, and non-profit organizations to help facilitate professional growth for teachers, professors, and other education specialists. They are specially designed to bring like-minded educators together for firsthand exposure to new and exciting environments, all under the guidance of expert leaders. In addition to field knowledge, educators are encouraged to collaborate and share creative solutions through peer-to-peer exchange.
As a result of international experiential learning, educators return to the classroom refreshed and reinvigorated, with in-depth subject knowledge and new skills. Whether you’re looking to expand your personal knowledge of a particular destination, course matter, ecosystem, or culture, or to create a group experience for educators at your institution, we can help you find the right program to meet your needs and objectives.

Partners in Ongoing Education In addition to Holbrook’s own programs, we partner with national and state institutions to foster global learning initiatives on behalf of continued learning. Here’s just a sampling of the organizations we’ve cooperated with over the years:
Academic Credit and Continuing Education To provide additional value to these experiences, Holbrook partners with academic institutions to provide opportunities to earn academic credit at the pre-college, undergraduate, or graduate levels.
PRE-COLLEGE & UNDERGRADUATE CREDITS
Holbrook supports high school juniors and seniors in obtaining pre-college and undergraduate credits. These credits, offered by Lees-McRae College, are fully transferrable, so students can enter university with approved college credits in tropical conservation, biology, and ecology. Founded in 1900, Lees-McRae College has always involved quality undergraduate education and a close interaction between students and faculty.
GRADUATE-LEVEL & CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
Through University of the Pacific, teachers can receive graduatelevel credits during one of Holbrook Travel’s professional development programs. Designed exclusively to meet the needs of educators, these credits are only applicable towards a degree program when pre-approved by your institution. Semester units of graduate-level professional development credit will be awarded by University of the Pacific upon successful completion of course requirements. Projects require 15 hours of course work per credit and are letter-graded. Credits are only acceptable and applicable to state licensure in local school districts that approve. 13

Sustainable Tourism at Selva Verde The Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program (CST) was created by the Costa Rican government to promote sustainability in the tourism sector by defining standards to evaluate properties, promoting the CST brand in the minds of consumers, and providing benefits to properties that improve their sustainability. Selva Verde Lodge is proud to carry the CST certification for continued commitment to the local environment, wildlife, and community. 14
Selva Verde Eco-Lodge and Rainforest Reserve
The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. Giovanna placed a deposit on the property on the spot and then embarked on an adventure that continues to this day.
Supporting the local community through service learning The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center was established in 1993 by Holbrook Travel and Selva Verde Lodge Founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter. As one of Costa Rica’s pioneering eco-lodges, Selva Verde is committed to a sustainable future — not only for the lodge, but for the people and wildlife that call the Sarapiquí home. Selva Verde actively works with conservation partners, including the SCLC, to promote conservation and environmental education throughout the local community.
Funded in part by its ecotourism activities, the SCLC is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects. SCLC’s projects, which are run by international volunteers and community members, include environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, community outreach, women’s groups, and scholarship funds for high school students. 15

WATER LILIES ON THE AMAZON
Ecuador Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in great harmony. The country has everything from indigenous communities to metropolitan cities, and boasts diverse ecosystems that can take you from the Andean highlands to the Amazon rainforest.
Galápagos Islands The unique flora and fauna of Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835 and continue to inspire travelers who visit these enchanting islands today.
Peru Peru was notably home to the Inca, an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their empire.
