I want to especially commend Pedro Bosques as our group guide. He was absolutely excellent. He had instant rapport with my students and they came to greatly respect his knowledge. He knows so much! He was professional at all times, caring of the students, and an all-around asset to the experience. My students would not have had the learning experience they did without Pedro.

I cannot speak highly enough about Edwin Ramirez. His knowledge as a naturalist was beyond compare. On top of that, he was gracious, hospitable, accommodating, and funny. I also could not help noticing how wonderfully he interacted with the hoteliers, the other guides and speakers, the vendors. He continually paved the way for our fabulous experience. His love of his country was evident and contagious. His personal experience of growing up in Costa Rica greatly enhanced the trip.

More important, however, is our goal to reinvent the calendar project as an opportunity to celebrate the phenomenal in-country guides we are fortunate to work with. These incredible professionals have facilitated all of the travel memories we share, and have struggled to make ends meet during 2020 as a result of the huge downturn in tourism revenue. So, we have mobilized our 2021 calendar as an opportunity to collect donations that will go into a Holbrook guide fund, and be distributed equally among our community of guides.

In spite of everything, we wanted to continue our calendar tradition as a true celebration of our travels in years past. We find ourselves cherishing them more poignantly this year. So, for 2021, we’ve gone back through the archive of past submissions, dating back to 2014, and selected our favorite shots that didn’t make it into the final calendar that year, because we always have an abundance of amazing photos to choose from.

How strange it is to be closing the book on 2020 without our usual Holbrook calendar tradition. If this had been a normal year, we’d be celebrating our favorite travelersubmitted shots from 2020! However, as you know, 2020 threw us all for a loop and, as we’d done so many times this year, we found ourselves recalibrating.

Nathan Forbes was excellent. Very knowledgeable and experienced on surrounding land and organisms. He offered several night hikes and bird watching nearly every morning, and was willing to add activities upon request. He especially knew a ton about birds and gave our group a great look at the rainforest habitat of Belize.

With every good wish,

Our boat guide, Lulu, could not have been a better fit for our young group. Not only did she guide us on the islands but she became our friend on the boat. She told stories, played games, and interacted with our students as if she had known them forever. Hopefully student groups in the future get to have the same wonderful experience as ours. Lulu made our trip an unforgettable one! She was the best!

In 2021 and beyond, we look forward to welcoming you to these destinations once more, and reconnecting our community in person. The joy we share in travel is a constant on our horizon.

As 2020 comes to a close, it seems appropriate to reflect on the many blessings that can spirit us through difficult times such as these. We hope these pages offer you a chance to recall your own beloved travel memories, and the people who have made a difference in your journeying.

No matter the destination, our incountry guides make great trips truly extraordinary. Not only do they share their limitless passion and expertise with visitors, they also attend to logistical concerns and handle potentially challenging situations with grace. They’re trained to deal with the unexpected, and to engage with every visitor on a personal level, ensuring a positive experience in their home country. We thank them for their work, and the indispensable role they play in making Holbrook programs special.

Moreover, we wanted to devote part of the calendar itself to the lasting impact our guides have on our travelers. On the right, you’ll see just a few of the outstanding guides Holbrook has been lucky enough to work with, and some of the cherished experiences they’ve facilitated for our community.

Lucas was the perfect tour leader. He anticipated our every need and took care of each one before it became a problem. Not only is he an expert guide and business owner but also a very charitable person who gives back to his community and to others. What a gem you have found in him! We are seasoned travelers, and of all of our travels, I rate this trip #1, made possible by Lucas.

ABOUT THE IMAGE While there are countless reasons to visit the Galápagos Islands, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to see Waved Albatrosses nesting. Sharing the trip with family and friends made the experience even more special. The majority of the nesting of these endangered birds occurs on Española Island, with a two small colonies on other islands. Waved Albatross usually breed every second year when they find their lifetime mates on this island from April to June. They live separately between nesting seasons, searching the oceans far for food. When the nesting instinct arises, they return to Española. The parents share the work of building a nest, producing and incubating an egg, feeding a chick and preparing for fledging—a sevenmonth commitment. The intriguing courtship and rituals continue for the duration, with displays of affection, beak-rubbing and choreographed dances. When each chick matures and takes flight, the parents depart, returning again in approximately 17 months. Our naturalist guided us along a narrow trail winding through the nesting colony of these magnificent birds with their 7-foot wingspan. We were immersed in their world of clacking of beaks, calls to each other and wooing with swaying dances. We literally stepped over birds nesting on the path as they ignored us. While this was just one day in a spectacular week in the Galápagos Islands, these extraordinary memories will last a lifetime.

ABOUT THE IMAGE My trip to Costa Rica leading a group of photographers was one of the highlights of my life. At the time, I had no idea just how special it would become. Pandemic-related travel bans were imposed shortly after our return, making every moment, every new friend, every bird, flower, and meal that much sweeter. Memories have grown so much fonder as I've held onto them, reliving each one over and over.... Standing on the suspension bridge at Selva Verde Lodge high above the mighty Sarapiqui River and the exhilaration of my first crossing into the secondary rainforest at night.... I can close my eyes and hear the water. The birds that gently rose with the sun and greeted us outside our rooms and dining area. The Costa Ricans we met along the way, including our extraordinary guide Erick Guzman, went out of their way to show us the best of their country has to offer. It was truly a privilege to experience this special place. Because of the vision and dedication of Giovanna Holbrook, 500 acres of Costa Rican primary and secondary rainforest was saved from deforestation and today Selva Verde protects hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, plants and birds. Our whole group left inspired, awed, and energized.

ABOUT THE IMAGE On our fifth day in Patagonia, we stopped for lunch at an almost unbelievably quaint hotel with stunning mountain views. After the meal, we relaxed on an adjacent grassy lawn, listening to the wind, the waves lapping on the shores of a black sand beach, and distant birdsong. As we meditated, eyes closed, I began to hear a gentle tone that perfectly complimented the relaxing mood. I wondered, Am I hearing wind chimes? Why hadn’t I noticed them before? After about ten minutes of calm breathing, we began to stir. And there, sitting peacefully before us with a beatific smile, was a local woman gently playing a Tibetan-style singing bowl. Where had she come from? How had she known to enter our Patagonian reverie? I never did find out, but I’ll never forget that moment, completely mindful of the magic of Patagonia and how lucky we were to be immersed in it. ERIC J. ABOUT THE IMAGE The Bengal tiger is the preeminent apex predator in India’s forests. Because all other animals are its prey, they’ve formed a loose communication network to signal when a tiger is on the move. Langur monkeys are the principal lookouts and usually the first and loudest to alarm, followed by spotted deer, sambar, and birds. Their alarm calls build to an explosive cacophony of howling, barking, bleating, whooping, and shrieking that follows the tiger. KAREN HUNT India, 2015

ABOUT THE IMAGE Brazilian tapirs are rarely seen in the open. They keep to the deep foliage for protection against jaguars. ABOUT THE IMAGE Costa Rica is a kaleidoscope of colorful and unique wildlife. Be it the scenery, numerous species of birds, mammals, herptiles or insects, everyone can find something awe inspiring on a trip to this wonderful destination. Our daughter was only eight years old on our trip and was constantly entertained and excited about all of the “up close” nature that continuously unfolded before us. From hummingbirds perching on her finger near a feeder, watching sea turtles laying eggs at midnight, finding monkeys playing or sloths napping in the trees, to finding brightly colored lizards, there was just so much to see and do. It was an adventure that she will remember forever. Thank you Holbrook Travel. GARY SARGENT Costa Rica, 2016

ABOUT THE IMAGE The Galápagos Islands have so many superlatives as a travel destination it is a hard pick when we ask our travelers, “What was your favorite experience?” Diving with the Galápagos Penguins, who really look like a miniature torpedoes, but much faster; walking among the flightless cormorants; photographing courting frigatebirds with their red inflated balloon-like gular sac; walking in Darwin’s footsteps seeing the finches that would help him solidify his concept of how animals evolve; having to step over bluefooted boobies that nest in the middle of the trail as they give you a hissing honk for your right of passage; life aboard our private yacht with guides that Holbrook carefully chose to educate, entertain and facilitate our needs to make the journey as memorable as it can get. A major highlight is watching the acclimated animals at point blank range sharing, their most intimate moments, including many species lovingly caring for their young. We teach our travelers not only how to use their camera but also how to predict the various behaviors that will make a great photograph. Anticipating the nuzzling of mamma and her baby will produce an "oooh, ahww, wow" picture for all to cherish and share when the dream trip is over, but the memories will live on.

ABOUT THE IMAGE Madagascar is one of the most amazing places on earth and a nature photographer's dream. The island split off from Africa over 135 million years and from India 88 million years ago, which has resulted in totally unique species of wildlife not found anywhere else on the planet. Our local guide, Solofu, brought an amazing amount of local knowledge and love for the wildlife and environment and gave us a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges facing the Malagasy people. ABOUT THE IMAGE Imagine the Grand Canyon draped in subtropical vegetation. Our Hiking & Natural History tour of Southern Africa featured Blyde River Canyon as we traveled the Panorama Route from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park. Our local guide escorted us, off the beaten path, to greet the morning light at this Blyde River Canyon overlook. The only other primates in the area were a troop of Chacma baboons. Traveling overland rather than on an internal flight turned out to be a great choice for our small, tight-knit group.

After a week in South Africa, our tour continued to Zimbabwe and Botswana. As we rounded an island while on a Chobe River boat safari, I spotted this Yellow-billed Stork. It was as if it was posing just for us! The riverbank was loaded with elephants, buffalos and hippopotamuses. We hiked, we learned, we laughed, and we took ‘family’ photos with our fabulous guides, as we made memories to last a lifetime. Thank you, Africa.

ABOUT THE IMAGE Peru had been on my bucket list for a while, so I was thrilled to explore this country with a group of like-minded travelers. Although the Sacred Valley was certainly high on my list of “mustsees,” I was equally enthusiastic about time in the Peruvian Amazon basin. I had read about the amazing biodiversity to be seen here, particularly for birding. Colorful macaws and toucans, oropendolas with their swinging nests, tanagers of all kinds, and the less flashy, but very noisy, screaming piha. One bird in particular was on my “bucket list” for birding in the Amazon. The hoatzin definitely qualifies as an odd but amazing bird. It is only found in the neotropics, typically in branches above slow-moving rivers and oxbow lakes. A chicken-sized bird with a blue face and an orange mohawk crest make it unusual enough but additional characteristics make it truly unique. A hoatzin ruminates and digest its food with the help of bacterial fermentation, and because of the foul odors it emits, it is commonly known as the stink bird. Hoatzin chicks are the only birds born with claws on their wings. This enables them to drop from their nests to the water below should they be threatened by a predator. They then swim away and hide near the shore until it is safe. Using their tiny claws, they can climb back up the tree to their nest. I was delighted to finally observe these birds in the wild and capture a few photographic memories. CINDY CONE PHOTOGRAPHY Peru, 2017

ABOUT THE IMAGE My trip to Alaska with the Texas Association of Biology Teachers was brilliant! I believe people say “everything is bigger in Texas, but I think Alaska gave them a run for their money. We had such an amazing and diverse travel group filled with teachers not only from Texas, but different parts of the United States and Canada as well. We were able to share our teaching stories and pedagogy expertise along with making life-long friendships and travel memories. The highlight had to be kayaking aside massive icebergs and famous glaciers, ultimately ice trekking to the top of one and repelling down. I will never forget the sounds of the glacier calving and the crackling of the ice melting. It is the friends we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey and bring new energy to our souls. I am forever thankful my trip to Alaska provided that nourishment to my life. ABOUT THE IMAGE This photo was taken from rooftop of a home in Viñuales Cuba, showing a back street and how most locals get around. The home (below) is owned by a local artist, and we were lucky enough to have lunch with him. Cuban people are some of the most friendly and gracious we've ever encountered in our travels.

ABOUT THE COVER IMAGE When lions are spread across the plains, they signal to each other: when there's been a kill, when it's time to join the males, when it's time to gather and move the pride. These times of reuniting are magic for a photographer. The members sometimes come from great distances to share news and renew the pride's bond. Here, two sisters have come together in the soft early light of a new day and greet each other. Taken in the Ngorongoro Crater with Canon 1DX camera and 600 f4 lens.
