their cultural and natural heritage—always adhering to the best practices of ethical and sustainable tourism.

Since 1974, we’ve worked with experts around the world to bring you special insider access and behind-thescenes experiences that ordinary tours cannot provide. And because we only hire residents of the region to guide you, you will gain a rich and authentic perspective that resonates long after the journey is over.

Wherever you go, whatever your interests, the one thing you will always do with Holbrook is learn. We are dedicated to facilitating a genuine connection between our travelers and their destinations, and we do this by immersing you in the natural world, engaging you with hands-on activities, introducing you to local people, and supporting communities as they work to preserve 2

DID YOU KNOW?

Our company got its start in 1971, when founder Giovanna Holbrook pioneered a journey to the Galápagos Islands for a group of naturalists and science professors aboard a retired Navy vessel—at a time when tourism infrastructure was virtually nonexistent. Three years later, Holbrook Travel was born.

2019 – 2020 Travel Preview Insights and expeditions Traveler interests are frequently shifting. Iconic places — Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, or the Serengeti — may look the same year in and year out, but attitudes on how to experience the world’s magnificent places change. Plus, new places emerge, either recently uncovered or are suddenly “in vogue.” As travel planners, we are constantly on alert. We listen. We reflect. We evaluate, and we react. Holbrook Travel is continually looking for new programs or new ways to explore. In this booklet, we are bringing forth some of these programs, be they new itineraries or ones that have been modified to accommodate the changing travel landscape. We’re excited to share these with our travel community of planners and leaders in the hope we’ll stir your curiosity and provide impetus for your travel planning.

WHAT’S NEW IN

SOUTH AMERICA South America has seen a steady increase in visitors over the past few years. Holbrook does not see this trend being “eclipsed” in the near future, as the celestial skies are aligning: two solar eclipses will reach totality over the continent, on July 2, 2019 and December 14, 2020. But the main reasons for growth are from renewed interest in iconic destinations: Galápagos, Amazon, Machu Picchu, and Patagonia. Travelers are showing an increased desire to seek out new places and venues, or approach them differently. For example, Kuélap in Northern Peru offers insight into Andean civilizations beyond the Inca, and Scalesia Lodge gives land explorers a new perspective of the Galápagos. Travelers are seeking more options for active experiences, whether horseback riding, sea kayaking, bicycling, paddleboarding, or whitewater rafting.

INDICATORS & TRENDS Recent ban on single use plastics in Chile (new bill May 2018) and Galápagos (effective June 2018) point to increased concern for environment.

ff

Curbing overcrowding: new rules for visiting Machu Picchu with split entrance times, official guides only, defined circuits, and no re-entry.

ff

Chile, Ecuador, Peru show the highest visitor increases, with the region up 7% per LATA booking statistics.

HOLBROOK’S IN-COUNTRY CONNECTIONS In Ecuador, we have built bonds with the Charles Darwin Foundation and FUNDAR Galápagos - along with new programs and with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. We have been working on “Living and Learning in Cuenca” as the trend of adults living overseas grows more popular (featured in a New York Times article). From our relationship with the preColumbian art museum Museo Larco (above) in Lima, we’ve secured private tours and lectures as well as visits to the Peru Government Palace. In the Sacred Valley, we continue to support the Spectacled Bear Conservation Society and the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Colombia’s peace accord has brought recent attention and an interest in birding and culture programs. WHAT’S NEW IN

AFRICA, ASIA & BEYOND Vast and diverse, Africa has seen divergent trends and erratic levels of visitors over the last few years. Political unrest, economic hardship, and health concerns have created uncertainty in many areas. Holbrook has seen resiliency in established countries (South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania) and emerging interest in more off-the-beaten path destinations (Madagascar, Namibia, Ethiopia). In the South Pacific, “long haul” travel to Australia and New Zealand have had modest gains, with a focus on conservation and community interaction. Travelers are seeking to support initiatives to protect endangered areas. More programs foster sustainability for local communities.

HOLBROOK’S IN-COUNTRY CONNECTIONS

INDICATORS & TRENDS

In Africa, Holbrook has established a network of conservation partners and educational institution. The Duke Lemur Center and Centre ValBio in Ranomafana National Park are integral to our Madagascar programs. In Southern Africa, our travelers connect with The Elephant Camp Sanctuary, Painted Dog Conservation Center, and Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum. In Tanzania, we continue to support Friends of Serengeti and Friends of Meali.

REGIONAL STATS AT-A-GLANCE

Beyond Africa, our roots and connections extend into Asia and the Polar Regions. This past year in India, we developed programs to support the Tiger Conservation Trust (above) and Jamtara Wilderness Camp’s “Star Bed” program, a one-of-a-kind traveler experience benefiting local farmers directly. Iceland continues to fascinate and draw visits, but not at the extreme rapid rate of recent years. Our guest speakers and experts are from a variety of institutions, including the Institute of Earth Sciences (IES), University of Iceland, deCODE, and Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue.
