For more than 40 years, Holbrook Travel has been a pioneer in the world of educational travel. Since our company’s inception, we’ve partnered with educators from colleges and universities, high schools, middle schools, and youth organizations across the country, taking thousands of curious travelers to the far corners of the world.

Dear friends and educators, I am often asked, “How can we engage responsibly with global communities?” It’s a tough question, and one that has no easy answer. Rather, it takes a multifaceted approach to ensure sustainable practices while fostering meaningful experiences in the field that build on student knowledge. This year marks our 45th anniversary, and to commemorate this milestone, we’ve included a feature on “Our Story,” as depicted on pages 6-7. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of my mother, our company’s history has been deeply rooted in a commitment to supporting conservation and community-based sustainable travel, and every day we endeavor to follow her example. We have worked hard over the years to build connections with our in-country partners in a way that benefits local communities and habitats. These long-standing relationships help us better support you, our community of educators and educational partners. Our commitment to authentic educational experiences that engage young adults to be global citizens is at the core of what we do. We are continually fine-tuning our educational travel offerings; as you peruse this catalog, you’ll see we’ve added new programs to destinations like Iceland, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and Mexico for 2020 and beyond. You will also find Professional Development programs where you can build on your own academic foundation and sharpen your field skills. Whether your academic focus is on Marine Science, Life and Earth Sciences, Natural History, Environmental Studies, or Culture and Social Sciences, our programs connect your classroom instruction with a variety of methodologies for field study. The Holbrook team is dedicated to working with educators to create enriching and affordable programs that are tailored to specific curricula and that continue to captivate students long after they return home.

We hope to see you in the field in the near future! With every good wish,

Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest. In 1982, while running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. Giovanna placed a deposit on the property on the spot and then embarked on an adventure that continues to this day. ALMENDRO TREE 16

Designed for student learning Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve provides an exceptional natural backdrop for your international teaching strategies in global literacy. Selva Verde’s private reserve is the perfect basecamp for educational field programs in ecology, conservation, community development, and culture. Supporting the local community through service learning The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center was established in 1993 by Selva Verde founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter. Funded in part by its ecotourism activities, the SCLC is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects. SCLC’s projects, which are run by international volunteers and community members, include environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, community outreach, women’s groups, and scholarship funds for high school students.

“I love Holbrook’s commitment to conservation of the Costa Rican rainforest. I love the Lodge at Selva Verde.” —CHRISTINE BARTZIS Brecksville High School 2018

Sustainable Tourism at Selva Verde The Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program (CST) was created by the Costa Rican government to promote sustainability in the tourism sector. As one of Costa Rica’s pioneering eco-lodges, Selva Verde Lodge is proud to carry the CST certification for continued commitment to the local environment, wildlife, and community. 17

Peru

Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in great harmony. The country has everything from indigenous communities to metropolitan cities, and boasts diverse ecosystems that can take you from the Andean highlands to the Amazon rainforest.

The unique flora and fauna of Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835 and continue to inspire travelers who visit these enchanting islands today.

Peru was notably home to the Inca, an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountaintop citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their empire. 39

Viking heritage and the Icelandic language make Iceland an incredible classroom to study the unique Icelandic culture, while waterfalls, active volcanoes, massive glaciers, and vast uninhabited mountainous terrain make the land of fire and ice perfect for geological studies.

Witness religious traditions on the banks of the River Ganges, enjoy the astounding bustle of India’s metropolitan areas, or simply wander the impressive grounds of the Taj Mahal. Natural wealth abounds in India as well. The country’s government is working to preserve species such as wild tigers and habitats such as the diminishing tropical forest of the north.

With an estimated 80 to 90 percent of the country’s flora and fauna unique to the island, Madagascar’s forests, deserts, savannas, beaches, and coral reefs are perfect for tracking playful lemurs, colorful chameleons, and endemic birds while learning about sustainability and island endemism.

Tanzania

Isolated from the rest of the world by hundreds of miles of sea, New Zealand offers explorers a chance to study the intriguing native Māori culture, explore incredible biological riches and geological features, and discover opportunities for adventure against the gorgeous picturesque backdrop of a fascinating, diverse land.

South Africa’s unique habitats are home to a rich variety of wildlife — big cats, baboons, and penguins, to name a few — plus a staggering 22,000 species of plants, with cutting-edge conservation policies that serve as examples worldwide. Social scientists have abundant inspiration to engage in historical discourses of division and rebirth, and investigate presentday efforts towards unity and diversity.

The roots of human history were discovered at Olduvai Gorge when the earliest known specimens of the human genus, Homo habilis, was found here. Africa’s big game species such as lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, buffalos and leopards can be seen in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. For the discerning traveler, Tanzania captivates the senses, engages the mind, and inspires the spirit. 49
