SNORKELING WITH A HAWKSBILL SEA TURTLE

For more than 45 years, Holbrook Travel has been a pioneer in the world of educational travel. Since our company’s inception, we’ve partnered with educators from colleges and universities, high schools, middle schools, and youth organizations across the country, taking thousands of curious travelers to the far corners of the world.

Dear friends and educators,

June 2020

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our entire planet is in the midst of a major change, the full impact of which is yet to be fully realized. Student travel programs abroad are particularly affected by this uncertainty, which makes planning for these amazing opportunities all the more challenging. However, in spite of the pandemic’s far-reaching effects, a few things remain constant. Among them, our interconnectedness as a global society. Our unity of purpose in facing down worldwide challenges, both human and environmental. The responsibility we share in our young people’s futures, and the power of education to meet the evolving needs of the planet they will inherit. Educators find themselves in a unique and perhaps overlooked position as the world is shifting around us. The need for teaching and learning cannot be canceled or postponed. Though the definition of a classroom is rapidly changing, the existence of a learning environment beyond walls and desks has always been true. The intangible connections between students, teachers, and their shared lessons are more important than ever. We know that it’s still too soon to venture into the world’s classrooms beyond our doorsteps, but we hope that you kindle a spark for the future by looking ahead to opportunities in 2021 and beyond. These pages offer a chance to both dream and plan for brighter days, when sharing the world’s teachings with your students can be done in person. Meanwhile, we continue to monitor the global situation as it evolves, with the utmost priority on the health and safety of our communities. We welcome you to reach out to any of our educational travel consultants with questions or concerns you may have about future planning. Most of all, the entire Holbrook team sends our best to all of you for good health and wellbeing. With every good wish,

ANDREA HOLBROOK P RE S I D E N T, H O L B R O O K T R AV E L

The impact of educational travel on young learners

LEARNING IN THE GLOBAL CLASSROOM Travel has the power to transform young learners into global leaders. Our planet offers myriad classrooms for young people to explore, where they can be immersed in new environments, interact with unfamiliar cultures, and witness key concepts in practice. We pride ourselves on educational programs that foster growth opportunities, both academic and personal, in order to create deeper meaning for young minds, and instill in them a lifelong passion for learning and discovery. No matter the destination, no matter the discipline, we strive to nurture curiosity, compassion, and commitment in all of our young travelers.

4

CURIOSITY

C O M PA S S I O N

Curiosity is the cornerstone for all meaningful learning. We encourage students to look at the world around them and ask questions. Whether through scientific inquiry or cultural connection, curiosity leads young people to investigate, explore, and problemsolve, enriching their experiences and developing key skills for future success.

Compassion is at the heart of the international travel experience. Travel opens young minds to different cultures, communities, and ways of life, and compassion toward these differences has the power to change the world. The benefits of early travel experiences last a lifetime, and shape the way the next generations create their future.

COMMITMENT Commitment means acting on the responsibility to our communities and environments—global and local, human and natural. In order to become community-conscious global citizens, students must practice commitment by giving back through service. Acts of service illuminate the interconnection between young people and the world they live in.

Integrating academic standards and real-world learning

EDUCATIONAL CONNECTIONS Our interdisciplinary programs are designed in alignment with academic standards, to help students develop critical thinking skills and provide real-world context beyond the classroom. We are experts at working with educators to create enriching programs tailored to specific curricula. Standards-based learning STEM education initiatives and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize understanding science, technology, engineering, and math practices through hands-on learning. While standards vary among states and institutions, our programs can expand on core ideas and incorporate experiential learning to meet nationally recognized standards. Our educational travel specialists can make suggestions to meet your specific goals.

Personalized learning We know learning is not always measurable by easily-defined standards. We choose activities that not only illuminate classroom concepts in the real world, but that also foster personal growth in your students. Our programs are designed with student reflection in mind, knowing that a shift in perspective is a powerful, intangible epiphany that can change your students' understanding of the world around them, and even impact their future lives. 10

Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest. In 1982, while running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. Giovanna placed a deposit on the property on the spot and then embarked on an adventure that continues to this day. ALMENDRO TREE 14

Designed for student learning Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve provides an exceptional natural backdrop for learning. Selva Verde’s private reserve is the perfect basecamp for educational field programs in ecology, conservation, community development, and culture. Suitable for all levels of learning, the site is equipped with classrooms, dormitory accommodation, Wi-Fi, and a basic wet lab facility, ideal for annual student studies in a variety of research applications.

The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) was established in 1993 by Selva Verde founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter. The SCLC is a non-profit organization designed to foster opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects. Students can participate in SCLC projects like environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, reforestation projects, and community outreach.

Alaska

Belize

Alaska’s majestic mountain peaks, glaciers, tundra and temperate forests, and nearly 34,000 miles of protected coastal waters contain breathtaking scenery and wildlife such as sea otters, grizzly bears, humpback whales, and bald eagles.

Belize is home to many important and wellknown pre-Columbian Maya ruins and its remote cayes and barrier reef system (the second largest in the world) make it the perfect place to snorkel and study marine ecosystems.

Costa Rica

Cuba

Cloud forests, rainforests, valleys of coffee, and volcanic mountain peaks fill the land between Caribbean and Pacific beaches. Costa Rica is an ecological Eden of protected natural treasures, where students can study biology, geology, environmental science, and more.

Traveling with students to Cuba at this moment in the history of US-Cuba relations is a unique learning opportunity not to be missed. Studies in areas such as economy, health, social sciences, and a wide range of natural sciences, including marine biology, are available.

El Salvador

Honduras

El Salvador is home to over 800 animal species, including butterflies, tropical birds, monkeys, and sea turtles, across tropical forests, volcanic landscapes, and marine estuaries. Rich cultural traditions can be observed at Maya archeaological sites as well as colonial villages.

Honduras is practically bursting with archaeological sites, pristine natural areas, and beautiful coastline waiting to be explored, and its coral reefs—part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system—provide unique opportunities for marine study.

Mexico

Panama

Accounting for 10 to 12 percent of the world's biodiversity, Mexico's habitats range from mountain pine forests and jungles to ocean basins and endless sea. It is also renowned for the astounding cultural artifacts and archaeological ruins of the ancient Maya.

Nestled between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Panama is home to extraordinary biodiversity. In addition to its famous canal, the country’s pristine rainforests, fertile highlands, and beautiful beaches are a passageway for migrating birds. 21

Iceland

India

Madagascar

Viking heritage and the Icelandic language make Iceland an incredible classroom to study the unique Icelandic culture and historical literature; waterfalls, active volcanoes, massive glaciers, and vast uninhabited mountainous terrain make the land of fire and ice perfect for geological studies.

Witness religious traditions on the banks of the River Ganges, enjoy the astounding bustle of India’s metropolitan areas, or simply wander the impressive grounds of the Taj Mahal. Natural wealth abounds in India as well. The country’s government is working to preserve species such as wild tigers and habitats such as the diminishing tropical forest of the north.

With an estimated 80 to 90 percent of the country’s flora and fauna unique to the island, Madagascar’s forests, deserts, savannas, beaches, and coral reefs are perfect for tracking playful lemurs, colorful chameleons, and endemic birds while learning about sustainability and island endemism.

New Zealand

South Africa

Tanzania

Isolated from the rest of the world by hundreds of miles of sea, New Zealand offers explorers a chance to interact with the past and present of native Māori culture, explore incredible biological riches and geological features, and discover opportunities for adventure against the gorgeous picturesque backdrop of a fascinating, diverse land.

South Africa’s unique habitats are home to a rich variety of wildlife — big cats, baboons, and penguins, to name a few — plus a staggering 22,000 species of plants, with cutting-edge conservation policies that serve as examples worldwide. Social scientists have abundant inspiration to engage in discussions of historical division and rebirth, and investigate present-day efforts towards unity and diversity.

Tanzania is an ideal destination to explore cultural, natural, and human history. Meet with local indigenous groups to learn about their customs and daily lives, and cross paths with Africa’s big game species such as lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, buffalos and leopards. Then, put the experience in perspective with a visit to Olduvai Gorge, where the earliest known specimens of the human genus were discovered. 49
