Dear friends, At Holbrook Travel, we believe that to travel is to learn; it’s a belief that has shaped our path for the last 40 years and one that continues to drive us as we look ahead to the future. When my mother, company founder Giovanna Holbrook, first embarked with a group of professors and scientists to the Galapagos Islands in the early 1970s, there was little in the way of a tourism infrastructure; they set out to explore a remote destination propelled by their desire for knowledge. Her adventurous spirit and willingness to forge her own path are reflected in our company philosophy to this day; we strive to create experiences that will inform—and transform—our travelers and how they experience the world around them. In these pages you’ll find just a sample of the kinds of programs that have inspired educators and enlightened their students for so many years. We hope you’ll find something that piques your interest so that we can welcome and support you in the year ahead. With every good wish,

Over the past 40 years Holbrook Travel has sent thousands of college & university students and professors to destinations across the globe. To see all of our higher education expeditions visit us on the web at holbrooktravel.com

What our travelers are saying We’ll fill your trip with experiences that will last a lifetime — but don’t just take our word for it. Here’s some of the feedback we’ve had from other educators who have traveled with us recently. To read more, visit holbrooktravel.com/testimonials

I travel internationally with students on a regular basis, and Holbrook never disappoints! Our most recent foray was to Northwest India for a natural and cultural history trip. The memory of this occasion will be with me for a lifetime. Thanks Holbrook! — Dr. William Heyborne Morningside College India expedition

14

The level of attention, the quality of the guide, experience of the driver, quality of accommodations, educational experience, flexibility – I just threw away all the competitors literature for next year! You have my loyalty!

One of your strengths is that I know as problems arise during the trip, you are always there to fix things and make them the best they can be. It gives me great confidence to know that as problems arise (which they inevitably do) you are so on top of it.

Sarapiquí, Costa Rica

Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve Make the rainforest your classroom Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest.

The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. It took almost one year to raise the money, but by 1985 Giovanna was able to return to Costa Rica and buy the land. The once endangered forest became a private rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first eco-lodges, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve. 28

“

Selva Verde is a fabulous place and we have seen and learned so much. In just three days we have seen huge iguanas, an armadillo, three types of frog, two of them the poison dart variety, a keel-billed toucan, hummingbirds (precioso!), striped squirrels, many different types of butterfly, kiskadee birds, lizards, golden orb spiders and the type and variety of plant life too numerous to list. The colors, shapes and forms of these glorious plants are mind-blowing.

Holbrook Travel in South America Ecuador Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in great harmony. It has everything from indigenous communities to metropolitan cities, and boasts diverse ecosystems that can take you from the Andean highlands to the Amazon rainforest. Galápagos Islands The unique flora and fauna of Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835 and continues to inspire travelers who visit these enchanting islands today. Peru Peru was notably home to the Inca — an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their Empire.

Other Holbrook Destinations Iceland Viking heritage and the Icelandic language make Iceland an incredible classroom to study the unique Icelandic culture, while waterfalls, active volcanoes, massive glaciers, and vast uninhabited mountainous terrain make the land of fire and ice perfect for geological studies. India The cultural wealth of India, both ancient and modern, is vast. Witness religious traditions on the banks of the River Ganges, enjoy the astounding bustle of India’s metropolitan areas, or simply wander the impressive grounds of the Taj Mahal. Natural wealth abounds in India, as well. The country’s government is working to preserve species, such as wild tigers, and habitats from the Himalayas to the diminishing tropical forest of the north. Tanzania The roots of human history were discovered at Olduvai Gorge when the earliest known specimens of the human genus, Homo habilis, was found here. Africa’s big game species such as lions, elephants, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard can be seen in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. For the discerning traveler, Tanzania captivates the senses, engages the mind, and inspires the spirit.
