PLANNING THE PERFECT EDUCATIONAL FIELD EXPEDITION
Who is Holbrook Travel? Our founder Giovanna Holbrook pioneered one of the first educational tours to the Galåpagos Islands when she gathered a group of scientists, professors and natural history enthusiasts to explore the archipelago. Holbrook Travel was created a few years later in 1974, and since then we’ve taken thousands of students and educators to the far corners of the world. Today, we continue her mission by offering students the opportunity to learn through experience. Our staff travels annually to meet with our expert, expert local guides, inspect sites, and evaluate lodgings to ensure that each program meets our benchmarks for safety, academic standards, and value.
Why Educational Travel? Our hands-on educational programs are designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of science, history, language, and world cultures. Developed with national academic standards in mind, our interdisciplinary and multicultural programs help students develop critical thinking skills and provide a real-world context for concepts learned in the classroom. We are experts at working with educators to create enriching and affordable programs tailored to specific curricula.

Holbrook Travel in North and Central America COSTA RICA Cloud forests, rainforests, valleys of coffee, and volcanic mountain peaks fill the land between Caribbean and Pacific beaches. Costa Rica is an ecological Eden of protected natural treasures. PANAMA Best known for its canal, Panama is a tropical oasis and melting pot of culture. Its dominant features are the mountainous highlands formed along the central spine of the country, grasslands, and over 500 rivers. HONDURAS This slice of Central America boasts some of its most ancient history. The western city of Copán is built atop a prehistoric Maya city and still features remnants of that lost civilization. GUATEMALA Land of mountains and colorful marketplaces, Guatemala is the former center of a Maya civilization that built massive pyramids, created the only sophisticated writing system in the Americas, and perfected a calendar that is more accurate than ours today. BELIZE Thanks to an abundance of national parks, marine reserves and wildlife sanctuaries, more than 40 percent of Belize is protected. Its remote cayes and barrier reef system (the second largest in the world) make Belize the perfect place to snorkel and study marine ecosystems. MEXICO Known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture and delicious cuisine, Mexico is a dream destination for travelers. The unique wildlife and environments of the Yucatán as well as Mexico’s ancient roots in Aztec and Maya civilizations are sure to inspire. ALASKA Alaska’s majestic mountain peaks, glaciers, tundra and temperate forests, and nearly 34,000 miles of protected coastal waters contain breathtaking scenery and wildlife such as polar bears, grizzly bears, humpback whales and bald eagles. 20

Holbrook Travel in South America ARGENTINA From the Andean northwest to the lush grazing grounds of the plains to the vast and awe-inspiring Patagonia region, Argentina is a richly beautiful nation with a wide variety of terrain. BRAZIL This Portuguese-speaking nation occupies almost half of the South American continent and is home to pristine beaches, Amazonian rainforests, bustling metropolises, and incredible landscapes. CHILE With the driest desert in the world and massive glaciers, Chile is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, but it is also a cosmopolitan nation with impressive literary history and cultural traditions. ECUADOR Man, animal, and plant cohabitate Ecuador’s mountains, rainforests, and shores in a delicate balance. The unique flora and fauna of the Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835. PERU Peru was notably home to the Inca — an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their Empire.

“
I have had the opportunity to take girls to Hawaii, Guatemala, and Iceland through the Girl Scout destinations program and Holbrook Travel. All of these experiences were amazing for the girls and for the chaperones. When I tell people that I have taken girls to locations like these I always hear things like, “Wow, that must have been a lot of work for you to organize everything!” I just reply, “Nope, it was easy. Holbrook Travel takes care of everything for me.” And that is the absolute truth… It is great that the chaperones can just worry about making sure the girls are having the time of their lives, which of course they do. — LESLEY ROBINSON Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina

Sarapiquí, Costa Rica
Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve Make the rainforest your classroom Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest.
The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. It took almost one year to raise the money, but by 1985 Giovanna was able to return to Costa Rica and buy the land. The once endangered forest became a private rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first eco-lodges, Selva Verde Lodge and Rainforest Reserve.

Selva Verde is a fabulous place and we have seen and learned so much. In just three days we have seen huge iguanas, an armadillo, three types of frog, two of them the poison dart variety, a keel-billed toucan, hummingbirds (precioso!), striped squirrels, many different types of butterfly, kiskadee birds, lizards, golden orb spiders and the type and variety of plant life too numerous to list. The colors, shapes and forms of these glorious plants are mind-blowing.
