ANNUAL REPORT TO DONORS 2012 - 2013

Message from the President and Chair

Changing the world Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s clients and families, donors, board members and staff have been inspired this year by the hospital’s bold new strategic plan, Leadership in Childhood Disability. We are proud to support the hospital’s efforts to be a global leader in world-class care, research and teaching in key areas like acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy, autism, and participation and inclusion. We know the achievement of these goals will change the world for kids with disabilities. As leaders, we embrace change, knowing that it will open up a world of possibility for our kids at Holland Bloorview, and children with disabilities all over the world. It is our hope that when we speak about leadership, you, our generous donor, see yourself in this critical role.

Leaders persevere. They are ingenious. They set high expectations for themselves and for others, and endeavour to make those a reality. Leaders strive to bring their dreams to life. And, in doing so, they bring the dreams of others to life. Leaders slay the dragons that get in the way. These are the kind of leaders that children with disabilities need. They focus on all that can be done. It is, frankly, who you are to us. With your help, we are preparing children and youth to make their way in the world, to be strong advocates for themselves, and to be healthy in body, mind and spirit. Thank you for being the kind of leader that nurtures and inspires the talent and passion in our clients, clinicians, scientists, and everyone at the hospital who is working hard to bring the vision to life.

Leaders believe in what’s possible. Leaders see opportunities and focus on the positive. They find the hidden path that guides them around brick walls and break through barriers. Leaders are not stopped by limitations. Instead, they find the key that leads to innovation. Leaders break new ground and plant seeds that create new possibilities.

Two exceptional leaders on our Foundation Board of Directors have been with us for the past six years. As their terms as board directors end, we would like to thank Rob Wheeler and Michael Kelly for their extraordinary leadership and generosity.

This annual report celebrates leaders who are making a difference in the lives of children with disabilities. This is a celebration of you. We are certain you will enjoy reading about the difference you have made this past year as the hospital’s true partner in transforming care, leading the system, accelerating knowledge and inspiring our people. It has been our pleasure to work alongside you to champion Leadership in Childhood Disability

Celebrating the power of legacy Giving now will impact kids forever.

Stories sometimes have a way of changing lives. For Yveline Audemars, a story changed hers when she picked up the Globe & Mail’s Report on Business one day in 2008. Yveline read about the Bigioni family, who was raising $1 million to ensure that Holland Bloorview’s SmartCentres Creative Arts March Break Respite Camp would operate in perpetuity. Yveline understood the need for such a camp. While the Bigioni’s daughter, Emily, thrived during this weeklong retreat, the camp also provided her family with much needed rest. Yveline thought of her 94-yearold mother who required intensive support. “The Bigioni story touched my heart because I realized how stressful it can be when someone depends on around-the-clock care,” says Yveline. “I knew then that I was going to help the Bigionis build the endowment fund.” Yveline and her husband, Humberto, befriended the Bigionis and helped them reach their goal by making a significant contribution to the endowment. In doing this, they will impact children and families for years to come.

Marc Letourneau and Meegan Hinds learned firsthand how Holland Bloorview changes lives. Their daughter, Zoe, underwent intensive therapy at the facility in 2005 and 2007 after undergoing two surgeries to remove brain tumours. The hospital’s team and Zoe’s parents helped her recover her speech and gross and fine motor skills, as well as restore her confidence. Now, Zoe is attending university with plans to become a nurse. Marc and Meegan decided to include Holland Bloorview in their will. “We wanted to give a lasting family legacy to Holland Bloorview, not only because it was an important part of Zoe’s rehabilitation, but we saw its impact on others,” says Marc. “We feel that all kids who need rehabilitation should have access to it.”

“What I do is mirrored in a small way to what is being done every day at Holland Bloorview,” says Dr. Novack, who was amazed by a tour of the facility. “The dedication of the staff, the excellent technology available to help patients, and the teaching component really resonates with me.” The annual golf event is close to the $500,000 mark, a milestone that Dr. Novack hopes to celebrate during his tenure as Chair. “I work with a dedicated committee and wonderful sponsors,” says Dr. Novack. “The more people learn about the incredible efforts and achievements of Holland Bloorview, the more they step up to the plate to make a lasting difference. I can see us continuing to support Holland Bloorview for many years to come.”

For Dr. Phil Novack, Holland Bloorview’s dental services touch close to home. Dr. Novack is a periodontist who helps restore dental function for his patients. He is also the Chair of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry Annual Golf Classic, which has been fundraising for Holland Bloorview’s dental services for more than 30 years.

“ There is a lot of excitement in the work we are doing. Putting young scientists and post-doctoral students in place is critical. They are the ones who will carry the torch and keep the issues faced by kids with disabilities at the forefront. Supporting them is pivotal to our ongoing success.” 8

A world of possibility created by your investment in science Donors’ dedication and commitment accelerate research. Imagine a world where children who cannot move or speak can communicate their needs, wishes and opinions through devices that are custom-built for them. Or a world where children with severe autism manage debilitating anxiety with the help of wearable technology. This world is possible because of the visionary work of scientists at the Bloorview Research Institute and the very special donors who support them. The Raymond Chang Foundation has donated $3 million to establish the Raymond Chang Foundation Chair in Access Innovations. The gift will exponentially help improve quality of life for children who are non-verbal and unable to move. Dr. Tom Chau, VP of the Bloorview Research Institute, and his team are developing neurodevices to enable children to communicate through a computer tablet using all the ways the body can express itself, such as the blink of an eye and thrust of a tongue. They are literally giving kids who are non-verbal a voice. The gift by Ray Chang and his children, Andrew and Brigitte, is a critical investment. It will trigger

a domino effect that will build significant capacity to serve more kids locally and around the world. “Our goal is to equip 50 kids in five years,” says Dr. Chau. “Once you create a critical mass of children served, you start to identify commonalities, which leads to more devices to support even more kids.” This gift brings the number of research Chairs at Holland Bloorview to four. Chairs are important for several reasons. First, they bring invaluable attention to a critical need. Second, they help train teachers and therapists to work with children using specific technologies and therapies. Third, they nurture the next generation of scientists who will take this work to new exciting levels here at home and abroad. Jim and Mary Davie are also visionary donors. They have invested in scientists who are just launching their careers. “I credit our young scientists for the innovative work done in our lab,” says Dr. Chau. “They are very creative and propel our research enterprise forward. You always need a critical mass of thinkers like them to be successful and get results.”

Jim and Mary’s gift is helping Dr. Azadeh Kushki develop a device that will help kids with autism recognize and manage their anxiety. Approximately 75 percent of kids with autism experience clinically significant symptoms of anxiety. This research is urgently needed and will have a big impact. Post-doctoral students – commonly referred to as ‘post docs’ – also help propel our research enterprise forward. They write conference presentations and research papers that are often published in prestigious academic journals, making them the most productive and creative individuals on the research team. “By supporting post docs, donors are helping the Bloorview Research Institute increase its productivity,” says Dr. Chau, who wants to double the number of post docs the Institute currently employs to ten. “Post docs are highly qualified, and they impact the bottom line the first year they are with us. Hiring them in this capacity is a great way for the hospital to identify potential new recruits.”

Holland Bloorview’s unique role in brain research is creating a buzz Donors rally behind exciting new brain research and rehabilitation.

Chillin’ for Kids

Holland Bloorview is at the forefront of extraordinary developments in the treatment of kids with brain injuries and disorders. New understanding of brain plasticity and regeneration offers exciting potential for rehabilitative solutions for recovery. As donors, your gifts are behind these exciting developments.

Dr. Tom Chau

Intrigued by Dr. Darcy Fehlings’ research in virtual reality therapies and multi-player exergames for kids with cerebral palsy, donors are helping to make therapy fun while improving fitness, mobility and social networking. Thanks to you, Dr. Fehlings and her team are also learning how the brain repairs itself through this type of physical and mental stimulation. Donors are also rallying behind Dr. Evdokia Anagnostou’s breakthrough research in autism. Dr. Anagnostou and her team at the Autism Research Centre are studying how the autistic brain is different

from a typically developing brain, and testing new medications and technologies that improve quality of life for kids with autism. With one in 88 kids diagnosed with autism, this research is urgently needed. The Brain Injury Rehab Team (BIRT) is also receiving attention from donors like you for its work in restoring abilities in kids with acquired brain injuries, and reducing anxiety and depression. BIRT received a boost when Chillin’ for Kids, an annual fundraiser for Holland Bloorview, raised $85,000 to help purchase a cutting edge Gait Training System and adaptive iPads. Chillin’ for Kids also helped hire a music therapist to aid with neurological rehabilitation. The Don and Lillian Wright Foundation and other donors contributed to the sophisticated ETG-4000 Optical Topography System to help Dr. Chau and his team map the full brain, looking for ways to translate thoughts and feelings into words with the help of technology.

Transforming fear into hope How families of children with disabilities are helping to make groundbreaking research and care a reality for other families. Parents of children with disabilities run the gamut of emotions – from fear and despair to hope and deep love. Often, their days are absorbed in the care of their child, allowing them little time to rest or focus on other activities. It is extraordinary then when parents devote some of their precious time to fundraise for the hospital. Fred Char’s oldest daughter, Krystal, has borderline autism and developmental delay, which includes seizures. One day, a seizure was so severe, she lost the use of her torso and limbs. She has been an inpatient at Holland Bloorview ever since. “Because I was such a vocal advocate for my daughter, I was asked many times to join the hospital’s Family Advisory Committee,” says Fred. “Finally, after three years, I agreed to attend a meeting to see if I liked it. Since that time, I have missed only one meeting.” The Family Advisory Committee draws on the invaluable expertise of families to serve as advisors, mentors and teachers to other families and staff at the hospital. Fred was asked to help

raise funds to create a family inpatient kit to support families new to Holland Bloorview. He and his family raised more than $10,000 in just one year. They have started a second initiative for Therapeutic Recreation, which engages children and youth through art, music, laughter, recreational play, and social interaction. Lindsay Holtz and Tim Close experienced profound loss when their infant son, Damian, passed away. The couple transformed their loss into hope by launching Damian’s Campaign in 2011. In 2012, with the help of more than 80 donors, including good friends Neil and Chrisula Selfe, Lindsay and Tim raised more than $66,000 to help create a Virtual Reality Therapy room to support the rehabilitation needs of kids with brain injuries. Kadey Schultz was also determined to transform grief into hope. After learning that her son, Emery, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), Kadey found herself supported by a remarkable group of colleagues. Kadey is an insurance lawyer and is actively involved with the charity, The League of Ordinary Gentlemen, which is comprised

of professionals connected to the insurance industry. When her colleagues in the League learned of Emery’s diagnosis, they approached Kadey about raising funds through an event called Music Heals, featuring musicians from the insurance industry. “Emery and his sister, Lily, were already attending the Bloorview School Authority,” says Kadey. “Because of our relationship with Holland Bloorview, it became very obvious that the Biggar Endowment was a perfect fit for our fundraiser.” Established by friends of Dr. Doug Biggar, who pioneered the use of the steroid deflazacort that has helped extend the lives of boys with DMD, the Biggar Endowment will help improve their quality of life as they become young men. Music Heals raised more than $20,000 for the Endowment with the support of 450 attendees. “Music Heals helped make me, my family and friends feel that we could do something for Emery,” says Kadey. “It helped us focus. The Biggar Endowment is about making sure that Emery has an exceptional life.”

Facing fears

Change makers

How RBC is helping kids with autism manage anxiety.

Eleven-year-old Ava was once afraid of everything. Diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Ava experienced extreme anxiety. “Ava’s heart would pound,” says her mom Heather. “She’d complain that she couldn’t breathe. She was dizzy and felt as though she was going to pass out.” Ava’s fears are very common for children with ASD. Seventyfive percent of kids with autism experience clinically significant symptoms of anxiety. Left untreated, anxiety may lead to complete social withdrawal and the inability to function at home, in school and in the community. Despite the urgent need to help children like Ava, there has been limited access to anxiety treatment for children with ASD until RBC made a $1 million gift to fund the RBC Anxiety Management Program for Kids with Autism. RBC has championed children’s mental health for 20 years and is a Holland Bloorview Champion of Childhood Disability. “The RBC Anxiety Management Program will help bring relief to kids experiencing anxiety by filling a gap in community mental health services. It will also build capacity by training community partners, providing valuable resources, and ultimately laying the foundation for

the progress of research in this important area,” says George Lewis, Group Head, Wealth Management at RBC, and Chair of the No Limits Campaign. “At RBC, we understand the toll mental illness can take on children and families, as well as the workplace, school and our communities.”

“We are incredibly grateful to RBC,” says Dr. Evdokia Anagnostou, Co-Lead of the Autism Research Centre at Holland Bloorview. “Because of RBC, we are implementing an evidence-based program called ‘Facing your Fears’ to meet the needs of children within our system.” The results thus far have been encouraging. For Ava, who participated in the program, the outcome has been a life-changer. “Ava still experiences more anxiety than the average person,” says Heather. “The difference now is that she has a better sense of the tools and strategies she can use to address her fears. These are strategies she’ll use her whole life.”

That’s why we are taking Halloween to a whole new level. In 2012, we launched Change for Kids to celebrate Halloween, while giving trick-ortreaters opportunities to win prizes and help kids with disabilities realize their potential.

Scotiabank not only sold cards at its branches in the Greater Toronto Area, it donated $5* to Holland Bloorview for every PIN code entered online.

The response has been overwhelming. The program engaged thousands of participants who bought coin cards and entered over 102,000 PIN codes online in this inaugural year. We also engaged 82 corporate partners in the program. The result: more than $300,000 was raised in Change for Kids’ first year! “We are grateful to the participants and sponsors who helped make Change for Kids’ first year such a phenomenal success,” says Keith Pelley, President, Rogers Media and Co-Chair of Holland Bloorview Foundation’s No Limits Campaign. “In particular I want to thank our
