SITE PLAN

My intervention at Riverdale Park aims to create better connections between Broadview Avenue and the existing Park below. The overall composition of the platforms is inspired by minimalist graphic art and creates a series of platforms extending from the hill at different elevations. These platforms point the viewer towards the different programs of the park below. The ground plane below the platforms becomes activated by the structural elements of the platforms. This grid of columns provides an informal space for play. The platforms are accessed by a staircase which connects the pedestrian to the top and bottom elevations as well as the informal auditorium space which is created by a leveling out of the terrain near the top elevation.

Proposed Zoning

Step down towards existing low rise homes and create a major pedestrian through-way

Old Ottawa East is a small community located east of the Rideau Canal, just south of the 417. The community currently consists primarily of small residential homes. This family neighbourhood is becoming rapidly denser as the city of Ottawa expands its rapid bus transit system in order to move people towards the expanding downtown core. In order to help bridge the existing neighbourhood from its current low rise residential to the proposed high rise condo developments The master plan looks at creating a permeable pedestrian friendly community with active outdoor amenities. The site consists of a mix of low rise family oriented developments, senior oriented condos, as well as community amenities such as parks, office space, restaurants and auxiliary spaces for local schools.

Join the existing neighbourhood to the site by creating both private and public entrances along Springhurst

The proposed housing design is a multi level stacked town house complex aimed at low income families. The complex provides amenities such as private outdoor space, storage and private parking in a intensified setting. The proposed plan aims to provide the luxuries of the suburban lifestyle in an urban setting.

MAX. ZONE MASSING

DIVIDE MASS INTO CIRCULATION SPACE AND SERVICE SPACE

& CO., a co-working and entrepreneurial center is situated in Ottawa’s Vibrant Community of Little Italy. The community is marked by an eclectic mix of shops, small businesses and restaurants. The area’s main axis, Preston Street, Stretches from Dows lake to the south, to Ottawas Downtown to the north. The location of this community is ideal. Its proximity to Dows lake connects it to a variety of walking trails along the Rideau Canal and scenic views. As well the area is ideal for transit. It is connected to the city’s current LRT which allows for easy access to the current Rapid transit Highway , providing a short commute downtown. The Highway is currently being converted to an LRT line which would further facilitate transit to and from the community. The community of Little Italy and the city of Ottawa has seen a great deal of growth and development over the last few decades. The historic community consists primarily of two story converted brick homes and is seeing the rise of three new condominiums towering at approximately 40 storeys tall. The condominiums will help to bring a younger generation of residents to the community. The rise a younger generation in Ottawa has brought with it young entrepreneurs who’s a-typical businesses do not fit the office lifestyle. My goal in designing & Co. was to create a space that reflected both the current historical style of the neighbourhood but addressed the issues young entrepreneurs face in finding suitable work spaces for their out of the box businesses. The entrepreneurial center features a coffee shop, resource library, a shop space for small vendors to promote their items, both private and shared office space for rent, a board room, a two bedroom apartment unit for the buildings owner and landlord, and a one bedroom micro unit for small term leases for urban professionals visiting the capital on business ventures.

The average desk space is based off of the height and weight of a 40 year old male. These conditions don’t work for everyone so the ability to customize your office furniture has become more widely available in recent years. My proposed desk design features many customizable elements to make it a comfortable work space for a wide variety of people.

Initial Mass (625 SQM) True North Wellness center is located along the Ottawa river at an integral location in Canada's cultural identity. The proposed site intersects Canada's cultural ring. A ring of cultural landmarks which surround the Ottawa river spanning both the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The cultural ring includes Canadian Parliament, the Trans Canada Trail, The National Art Gallery, The Canadian War Museum, The Museum of Natural History and the National Art Center. This location adjacent to iconic Canadian landmarks offers a unique opportunity to highlight Canadian Culture. In order to take advantage of the location the Wellness Center is designed to promote healthy living through mental health and active living programs enabled by the buildings design. Using the Trans Canada Trail as a way to connect and engage with a more national landscape the site sits on a park designed to mimic and exaggerate the seven unique ecological zones that make up the nations unique ecology. By integrating aspects of the Canadian landscape into the park the Wellness Center creates an active outdoor space that helps to connect visitors to both the capital and the nation itself.

The Carpe River, a small river surrounded by Ottawa’s agricultural fields and the suburb of Kanata, is at high risk of flooding due to the numerous human alterations to its natural form. Proposed is a development centered around the future Light Rail Transit corridor slated for construction within the next 20 years. The transit line is anchored in community and institutional spaces as a means to reduce dependence on vehicular transportation in the local area. The master plan for this community aims to create a healthy active environment for the residents while promoting natural habitat around the Carpe River.

PHASING PLAN

PHASE 1: YEARS 1-10 The water treatment facility and learning center are constructed as well as the central LRT Station and Performing Arts Center. The existing roads are maintained and a new pedestrian path connects the community to the existing suburban communities.

PHASE 4: YEARS 30-40 This mixed use community allows residents the opportunity to live work and play within a small area. By creating this kind of environment we are able to reduce travel times for residents as well as ensure that public spaces remain active throughout all hours of the day. Mixed use communities help to reduce carbon emissions.

As the community grows additional Retail and Residential buildings are constructed. The water treatment system is set up to carry grey water from the residences to the growing Wetlands. Offices are constructed to help create a pedestrian community.
