PROCRASTINATORS, ADAPTERS, AND ORGANIZERS Your ability to deal with life’s requirements is dependent on how you operate on a daily basis. Most people fall under one of these personality descriptors: procrastinators, adapters, or organizers. Take a look at the following descriptions and decide which category fits you best. Procrastinators chronically put off dealing with the daily requirements of life. They avoid the mundane responsibilities of life. They especially put off unpleasant tasks. Many people believe it is a part of their personalities and some even create a life to support procrastination. I have a friend who proudly acknowledges “I always wait until the eleventh hour to get the job done.” College students are famous for it. “I didn’t open a book until the night before the test and then I crammed all night long.” Some procrastinators never get to their goal or at best they start things but don’t get them finished. Although it causes mild stress, a procrastinator is somewhat comfortable with the avoidance and is able to successfully move on without too much remorse or guilt. Procrastinators will fair better in the world if they improve the percentage of things they accomplish. Adapters are reasonably good at attending to the regular routine of the day. They are able to assess what special needs their week might include and will alter their schedule accordingly. This may include a child’s birthday party, a visit to the hospital to see a friend, a closing on a rental property, or a court preceding that takes two and a half days longer than scheduled. The Organizer looks at life in a regimented way. They are typically well organized and have rigid schedules. They do things by the book. Dinner is at six, paperwork is always attended to, and kids are put to bed before nine. When an emergency occurs, they immediately address plans to accommodate the needed change. They keep their schedule as routine as possible. They report feeling a little disoriented by the altered week, but as long as it is within their control, they feel

a sense of satisfaction at their ability to have their “ducks in a row.” Carol Juergensen Sheets Organizers need to realize that their need for rigidity may be feeding their need to control. They may need to remind themselves that it’s okay for others to do things differently and not to perfection. Which type of person are you? If you procrastinate at work, you will likely cause rifts with your coworkers. If you are overly organized and need things done ahead of schedule, you will likely aggravate those who work with you. If you are married to someone who is the direct opposite of you, then you will need to work together to find a compromise that works for both of you. As you might imagine, an adapter is the healthiest type because they have a nice balance of organization and flexibility. They can go with the flow or adhere to the schedule. They typically get the job done and are able to accept their imperfections. • Are you able to deal with the reasonable demands on your life? • Do you see yourself as a procrastinator, an adapter, or an organizer? • Do you believe your style is working to support a healthy environment and lifestyle? • Do you think your style works for those around you? Are you willing to change if you know that your habits bother other people? You might want to ask others how they view you to find out if they see you differently than you see yourself. The Quest for Rest Are you one of the 60% of adults in the United States who have reported sleep difficulties a few nights a week or more? Why is this? The causative factors include sensitivity to light, stress, emotional disturbances, digestive imbalances, and neurotoxicity. The most Nancy Spahr, obvious of these is stress. Founder When we have a lot going on at work, deadlines, financial burdens, etc. it can be difficult to fall asleep; the mind will go ‘round and ‘round in circles like a worn out dog trying to catch its tail until we crash or get up and do something else. The less obvious factors are digestive imbalances and neurotoxicity; so let’s explore those. Did you know 80% of your serotonin is produced in the gut? Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, is a key player in ‘cooling

and calming’ the nervous system. Serotonin is also the precursor for melatonin, a hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm. Extrapolate out and we can see that any digestive disturbance can affect our serotonin levels and in turn disrupt our sleep cycles. Neurotoxicity, as a factor is more common than we think. Neurotoxicity can be caused from metals and chemicals, particularly those that love fat. How much fatty fish have you been eating recently? Mercury concentrates in the fat cells of fish and then we consume it. Layer that with microbes like viruses and bacteria that love toxins, and you’ve got a foundation for neurotoxicity. The solutions for a good night sleep may involve support on the front end, some extra melatonin perhaps, but for consistent rest uncovering the underlying cause is crucial. Detoxification and repair can help us when we are awake and when we need to rest.

Dream it...Live it Each person, regardless of disability, deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams, whatever those dreams may be and however they may define them: • • • • • •

Fulfilling jobs Good friends Life partners Achievements and success Love and happiness Growth and security

Large or small, grand or simple, our dreams define who we are as individuals and shape how we move through our life journey. Our individual life circumstances also impact the steps we take to fulfill those individual dreams. It’s not for anyone to establish a standard for those dreams—they are as unique as each and every one of us. It was for this reason that we were founded by families in 1953: to provide children with the dream that society would not—an education. Since then, we’ve utilized a person-centered approach to encourage each person we serve to enrich our community through their participation. Today, we serve approximately 1,600 children, adults and families each year in Central and Eastern Indiana. We provide early intervention therapies for babies and toddlers with developmental delays, autism therapy, and camps for school-age students. Teens gain job skills through Project SEARCH and our Schoolto-Work transition services. We offer employment services that

encourage adults with disabilities to contribute to the workforce, increase their skills and become more independent. We also offer music therapy, therapeutic art and recreational therapy as well as volunteer opportunities, classes and interest-based clubs. Community Living residential supports, Participant Assistance and Care, and Behavioral Therapy round out our 8

services. Families of people with disabilities likewise need our support, so we host the Central Indiana Autism Support Group, offer educational trainings, and provide respite. Noble serves as The Arc of Greater Indianapolis, advocating the rights of people in Marion and Hamilton counties. Noble is proud to be CARF accredited and a United Way agency, committed to meeting the human service needs of our community. But because so many know us for what we used to be—a facility-based service provider—instead of what we’ve become—a community-based achiever of dreams—we recently rebranded our organization to reflect our respect for the unique needs, dreams and goals of each individual and family we serve. The vista of our new logo is inspired by the world view that so many of the people we serve depict in their own artwork. The open, winding road speaks to the freedom to go wherever your dreams take you and that we are all on a journey through life. The theme of “Dream It. Live It.” acknowledges the power and uniqueness of our dreams and Noble’s promise to guide, nurture, and support those we serve. In doing so, Noble envisions a world in which children and adults of all abilities live out their dreams in a community that embraces their contributions and recognizes them as fully participating members of our society. We live this out each day through our mission: to expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families through individualized services.

Giving Your Eye’s a Lift Have you ever been asked, "Are you tired?" or "Are you angry?” when you feel rested and wonderful? If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Each year, more than 100,000 women and men choose eyelid surgery to improve their appearance. The procedure has become extremely popular because nothing ages a face more than the eyes. The genetic structure of your face combined with aging, sun exposure, or other factors can cause

the skin around the eyes to sag or puff. Eyelids can begin to drape and develop a hooded appearance. Where there was once a clear crease in the eyelid, outlining the structure of the eye, a crepe-like section of skin may develop. Fat can accumulate under the eye causing bags and a tired appearance.

Innovative Technique

Dr. Chernoff utilizes his own proprietary surgical laser technique for both upper and lower eyelid surgery. His laser technique dramatically reduces bruising, swelling and recovery time. Dr. Chernoff’s precision and expertise using this technique provides superior cosmetic results over conventional surgery. The procedure involves the surgical removal of excess pads of fat and skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids that accumulates as a result of aging. For upper eyelids, a tiny incision is placed in the natural skin crease. The laser is utilized to remove excess skin and fat. The upper eyelid is sculpted to give an aesthetically pleasing, well-balanced look to the eye. Once the fat is removed an abundance of fine wrinkles exist, laser exfoliation of the lower eyelids is utilized to stimulate the growth of new collagen in the lower eyelids and to shrink the residual skin. This simple procedure can restore a youthful look to the entire face. At your consultation, Dr. Chernoff uses computer imaging to give the patients a realistic impression

sagging, or excess skin above and below the eyes. Our patient satisfaction from this procedure is outstanding.

Recovery

Recovery time for eyelid surgery varies depending upon the patient. In a simple upper eyelid lift with skin and only mild amounts of fat being addressed, the recovery is relatively quick. Quick means that you will feel well in a few days but you can expect some bruising and discoloration. The more skin and tissue that needs to be addressed, the recovery is a little longer. In almost all cases, patients recover in about one week or less. Our center takes follow-up care extremely seriously. We will see you everyday after your procedure to ensure you are healing as expected. We help you through every step of the recovery process.

Extensive Laser Options

Our center is among the largest laser centers in the country. We have multiple options for treating sagging, aging, or spotted skin, wrinkles, skin tightening, toning cellulite, and overall quality improvement. We continuously conduct research that provides our center with experience and advanced treatments.

Get Clear - Focus on Your Dreams Are you a woman who doesn’t have a clear vision of what you want your life to be like? So few women actually know how to take a dream, set goals, and then create a plan to accomplish that dream. Girls are encouraged to dream about the future, they are told they can get an education, and live a meaningful life. But as they begin to create a life; family, religious and societal norms pressure them into service to their jobs, to their families, partners and children. Yes participation in all those areas of life is important, but many times women don’t know how to balance other’s needs with needs of their own. Guilt ensues and your own needs are long forgotten. Women are taught throughout their lives that their dreams aren’t as important as meeting everyone else’s needs and in fact it is selfish to put themselves first. It’s so tragic because when a woman is fulfilled she reaches her true potential and everyone’s needs are exponentially met. Here are some small steps to start understanding your needs and reigniting your inner radiance: 1. List what’s stopping you List what you put off because you: don’t have the money, don’t have the time, can’t find someone to watch the kids, etc. Don’t put anything on your list that benefits anyone else. This list is about YOU - your wants, your desires, and your dreams. This is about you being selfish. Yes, selfish. 2. Ink it Write down some of your childhood dreams or the dreams that are lingering in your recent memories. These would be the “that would be so nice…” kind of dreams or the “I would love to do that…” kind of dreams. Don’t forget the “I could never do that…” dreams that you’ve tossed aside as well.

3. The one thing Just choose one thing that you want to do. Start making some notes on what it will take to reach that goal. For example, we will use “lose 15 pounds” as a quick example. How would you go about doing that? • Keep a dream journal. Example to start with “I am at my ideal weight by June 15, this is my action plan.” • Increase your physical activity. • Learn about different foods; what to minimize and what to include in your diet and prepare your menu for the week. • Break down your larger goal of 15 pounds into smaller increments. • Realize that the 15 pounds isn’t a destination; your focus is on the journey to reach the goal. • Start building your support network of likeminded cheerleaders. The point here is to take any dream or task and start breaking it down into actionable steps. You can apply this same formula to increasing your income, starting your dream job, having a fulfilling relationship, or ditching a bad habit. 4. Be creative Start brainstorming and writing notes about how you are going to make those dreams a reality. The words “no way”, “can’t”, “shouldn’t”, “if”, “but” have no place in your journaling. These are some of the first steps to help you awaken what you have left dormant in your heart and life. You don’t need to see the whole staircase; you just need to make that first step up. Go for it!

What’s New This Tax Season? by Ann M. Schneider As tax season continues, many Americans may be noticing an increase to their tax liability for 2013 as the result of several changes to the tax laws. Although some laws extended prior years’ tax relief provisions, others impose new taxes and higher tax rates for many individuals. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 provides for the extension of many tax relief provisions put in place through tax laws enacted in previous years. These include the repeal of the personal exemption phaseout and the itemized deduction limitation for individual taxpayers with income less than $250,000 and married taxpayers filing jointly with income less than $300,000. The tax law extensions also made permanent the capital gains and dividend rates of 0% for taxpayers below the 25% bracket and 15% for most taxpayers in the 25% tax bracket and above. However, a 20%

capital gains and dividends tax rate will apply to individual taxpayers in the 39.6% tax bracket. In contrast to these tax savings laws, however, a few new laws will create additional tax liability for many Americans. The first is the increased Medicare tax which imposes an additional .9% tax on earned income. The next increased Medicare tax imposes an additional 3.8% tax on net investment income. Both laws affect individual taxpayers with income over $200,000 and married taxpayers filing jointly with income over $250,000. Finally, there is a new tax rate of 39.6% for taxpayers with income over $400,000 ($450,000 for married filing jointly). Although some taxpayers may notice little change to their 2013 tax liability, several are likely to feel the impact of these new laws.

I have long believed that “work” is a gift unto itself to the worker.  The author Robert Dallek in his book called An Unfinished Life on the life of President John F. Kennedy states that “Sigmund Freud believed that a well-spent life rests on successful engagement with Arbeit and Liebe - work and love.”  As I observe people, it does seem that a happy life is somewhat connected to an engagement with meaningful work.  It appears that the work itself brings benefits of health and good spirits.  Our law firm has a significant tradition of celebrating a person’s accomplishments by an e-mail from a firm colleague to all users highlighting the award or event.  Jim Harrison is almost always one of the first to e-mail back to all users his kudos to the honoree(s) of the day.  Jim’s friends and co-workers agree that his genteel spirit and kindness to everyone make him the epitome of an Esquire.  He clearly would not have to come into work every day, but he wants to do so, and it is a gift to everyone he sees.

What is Hypnosis? I am often asked what Hypnosis is and what led me to it as a career. Hypnosis is a natural state of selective, focused attention. By narrowing your focus on relaxing your thoughts and body it opens the door to countless possibilities for healing and change. We go in and out of these states on a daily basis. If you day dream, get lost in a good book or movie, “zone out” in front of your computer or a video game or have been driving and all of a sudden say “how did I get here?” you have experienced a hypnotic state. Your conscious mind has narrowed its focus somewhere else. In hypnosis you will not be asleep or lose control of yourself. It is not mind control and will not make you do something that you do not wish to do. Rather, it is a powerful tool that

can assist you in making the changes you choose to experience a better life. The power is within you! From age six, I suffered from debilitating panic attacks. In my late teens I decided to seek help and started working with Dr. Hanus Grosz who introduced me to hypnosis. I researched panic attacks along with stress and anxiety, and the cause and effect it had on the body. I then learned a system of cognitivebehavioral techniques to understand what was happening in my mind and body and how the power was within me to change. Now I want to share what I have experienced and learned to help others. Let me show YOU how to take back your power.

Carolyn's Story

About a year ago, I’d given up on ever losing the weight I had put on over the past 10 years. I tried everything out there and nothing worked. One day I saw an ad for SuperVision Weight Loss in Castleton. I called them and

decided to try their HCG Weight Loss Program.

After

I started the program in September of 2012and was amazed how Before easily the weight came off. The staff at SuperVision Weight Loss were very supportive and helpful. They were always available to answer my questions. They even called me to help with my accountability. Yes, I had to follow the program, but with their direction I was able to lose weight and keep it off. I completed two rounds between Labor Day 2012 and Easter 2013 – and I lost 52 lbs. Losing the weight made me realize – I wasn’t as old as I felt! My blood pressure is down, my cholesterol is improving. My health, overall, is significantly improved from a year ago. It wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it. I feel alive again and it’s all because I walked into SuperVision Weight Loss, Castleton and let them get me started on a new path.

Hilton's Story

Before

After

After I was significantly overweight. My doctor was concerned that my weight would cause certain health problems as I aged. Before SuperVision Weight Loss helped me lose 70 pounds over the course of six months! I found the program during the first 40 days to be easy and safe. I learned to eat much healthier and that was something my wife and I wanted to do for years. I followed the suggested meals, measuring the protein consistently. I had an apple as a snack in the afternoon or evening as well as learned to drink water. The maintenance period offered the opportunity to get reintroduced to some of the other foods that I liked, but in moderation. I have been able to maintain my weight since stopping with the drops. One highlight is that I have not had a Coke or Pepsi in over 19 months! Kathryn and her team are very supportive and helpful. The SuperVision Weight Loss regime works, is safe and you will love the results!

We have SUPER VISION, we can see you thin! Take us up on our commitment to YOU! *Formerly Pounds and Inches Away.
