After

Carolyn's Story

About a year ago, I’d given up on ever losing the weight I had put on over the past 10 years. I tried everything out there and nothing worked. One day I saw an ad for SuperVision Weight Loss in Castleton. I called them and decided to try their HCG Weight Loss Program. Before I started the program in September of 2012and was amazed how easily the weight came off. The staff at SuperVision Weight Loss were very supportive and helpful. They were always available to answer my questions. They even called me to help with my accountability. Yes, I had to follow the program, but with their direction I was able to lose weight and keep it off. I completed two rounds and lost 52 lbs. Losing the weight made me realize – I wasn’t as old as I felt! My blood pressure is down, my cholesterol is improving. My health, overall, is significantly improved from a year ago. It was absolutely worth it! I feel alive again and it’s all because I walked into SuperVision Weight Loss, Castleton and let them get me started on a new path.

With post high school education in high gear throughout the country, now is a perfect time to investigate the medical/ dental field. You can become a highly skilled dental professional through an Intense Hands-on 12-week Dental Assistant Training Program. Indiana University’s record Spring graduating class is indicative of the national surge in education pursuits. Dental Office Training by Lynn has led the way in providing a tremendous opportunity for those wishing to enter the medical field. As a licensed dental hygienist with over 25 years’ experience in dentistry, Lynn Uptgraft established Dental Office Training by Lynn for the training and development of dental assistants. Her program provides intense, hands-on training, as well as the study of terminology, anatomy, and technology that is vital in obtaining employment in the dental office today. The Dental Office Training program offers a great curriculum including personalized training, limited enrollment, ISDH accredited digital radiology and software training in the latest technology. Lynn’s course has a maximum enrollment of TWELVE students so that more personalized training can be given. The course is outlined with a Practical Curriculum, as well as Classroom Lectures on Classifications, Anatomy, Tooth Descriptions, Armamentarium, Cavity Preparations, How to Place Varnish, Liners & Bases, Wedge Placement and Matrices of all types for the anterior and posterior. It covers resin materials in completions from the different generations of etch/prime/bond, to how to work with shades in the posterior and anterior area of the mouth. Lynn is now very proud to be accepting VA benefits for her classes. The Department of Labor states that between the years 2004-2014, dental assisting is projected to be one the fastest growing occupations. Dental assisting is a great family-oriented career. Most dentists work a 32-hour workweek and have weekends and holidays off. This is a career that you can use as a stepping stone to higher paying occupations.

Starkey Awards Breakfast

Celebrating 11 Years!

Deborah Wood, Founder, Owner and CEO of DWA Healthcare Communications Group (DWA), is the 2014 Winner of the 11th Annual Starkey Entrepreneurial Woman Award. The Starkey Award is hosted by the law firm of Harrison & Moberly, LLP, Indianapolis Monthly magazine, and Marti Starkey (Equity Partner at Harrison & Moberly, LLP). The Award is given each year to a female business owner, who has exhibited courage, tenacity and selflessness in starting and running her own business. DWA Healthcare Communications Group is a leader in the development of strategic healthcare marketing and education strategies, whose agencies include CME Enterprise and Avant Healthcare. Congratulations, Deborah!

Harrison & Moberly, LLP and Marti Starkey also give a Starkey Entrepreneurial Spirit Award to individuals who have exhibited courage, tenacity and selflessness in an endeavor (not necessarily a business). This year’s Spirit Awards focused on the heroic efforts by the legal community in our country to fight the horrific crime of human trafficking. Human trafficking – a form of modern-day slavery – has become the second fastest growing criminal activity in the United States, following drug trafficking. In recognition of the human trafficking crisis, the Uniform Law Commission drafted and approved an act directed against human trafficking. Three of the four Spirit Winners, Michael Houghton, Steve Wilborn and Anita Ramasastry, spearheaded the efforts to get the Uniform Act on Prevention of and Remedies for Human Trafficking drafted and approved. Jaycee Dugard, in her book, A Stolen Life, tells of her own personal experience with this horrible crime. Please say “I found it in Indy Metro Woman Magazine!” Thanks!

Be Kind to Yourself Women come into my office and want to change their lives. They are frustrated with different aspects of their life including their looks, their jobs, their parenting, and their relationships. If there was one thing that I could change about my clients, it would be to get them to stop being so critical of themselves. Women are inherently harder on themselves and oftentimes evaluate unrealistically. They don't believe they work hard enough and they constantly assess their behavior with self-loathing. This has many ramifications for self-esteem, performance and success. The truth of the matter is that women need to be kinder and gentler to themselves. Whenever I meet a woman who is overly critical, I explain to her that not only does this make it difficult for her to believe in herself; it also interferes with her ability to change. She will be much more successful if she focuses on her attributes and what is going right in her life. One thing we know about change and success is that people are more likely to do better when they feel they are competent and capable. This means that they have to look at what is going right in life as opposed to what is going wrong. They have to have a certain level of self-esteem before they can actualize their potential. This may be contrary to what you have been taught. You may have learned that change really only occurs when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired and fed up with a certain aspect of your life. Although this is true, it often reflects how sick you are of YOU. Good self-care means that you appreciate your strengths and build upon them to tweak whatever it is that you believe needs to change. I know many clients who have ruminated about how they look or how unhappy they are in a relationship and in actuality these feelings have immobilized them from creating a healthier life. One of the first steps to change is accepting things exactly as they are. As difficult as it may sound, I encourage people to appreciate

their life regardless of their circumstances. Are you 30 pounds Carol Juergensen Sheets overweight? Can you still see those things that are beautiful about your body despite the fact that you are 30 pounds overweight? Are you in an unhappy relationship? Can you still find positive things about your relationship and focus on what would enhance that relationship? Do you hate your job and dream of finding a new one every single day? While you are in that job, it's important to focus on what you like so that you can enjoy what's in the present while you look at building a different future. When you're able to create both of these realities at the same time you're much more likely to actualize your life and make it different. But this again means that you have to stop being so hard on yourself and that means noticing the positives regardless of your situation. Homework Assignment I would invite you for the next 30 days to spend at least five minutes every day focusing on something that you would like to change and remaining positive about your strengths and the situation while you are constructing the needed strategy for change. That means noticing the inherent strengths or the good that is in each situation. I guarantee this will empower you to change and like yourself in the process!

Education

SPOTLIGHT Medtech College provides a hands-on

learning environment for students preparing for a variety of both administrative and clinical healthcare careers. Nursing programs typically attract the most interest. In fact, roughly two-thirds of all students attending the Indianapolis, Greenwood and Fort Wayne campuses are enrolled in Nursing. Before they even start their clinical training, Medtech nursing students work to perfect their “bedside manner.” Students at the campuses hone their skills through advanced simulation labs with high-definition mannequin “patients” that exhibit the same symptoms as people they will eventually treat as licensed nurses. “The technology in our nursing labs and simulators

“Simply stated, we plan to become the best in the business, and this is how we are going to get there!” Hall adds. Improved Communication The positive results of effective communication are well documented and essential to achieving solid patientcentered training among future nurses. Hall’s nursing team is refining the communication process at Medtech campuses to facilitate enhanced dialogue between administrators, instructors, staff, and students. Nursing programs now have their own newsletters to ensure everyone’s aware of campus activities and policies, and provide updates on emerging healthcare trends.

reinforces lessons learned and provides students life-like hands-on experience,” says Medtech College Regional Vice President of Nursing Natalie Hall, MSN, RN. “It’s an important experiential learning component for preparing skilled graduates.” In addition to these technological advances, Medtech is refreshing its Nursing programs to ensure graduates are trained in all the latest disciplines. Under the direction of Hall and a team of directors and instructors, Medtech’s Indiana campuses have launched a special program – Extraordinary Medtech Nurses - to enhance and strengthen their Registered Nurse and Practical Nursing programs in a big way. The five-step initiative encompasses: • Improving top-to-bottom communication; • Expanding faculty development; • Increasing program rigor; • Improving NCLEX pass rates; and • Meeting ACEN performance standards. 14

Equally as important, new processes are in place for discussion to flow more smoothly and quickly from students up the “chain of command.” As part of this process, nursing student representatives are invited to attend faculty meetings so questions or concerns can be expeditiously and efficiently addressed. “Nursing students are why we are here,” Hall explains, “so we’re employing every measure to ensure their voice is included in our processes and procedures.” Expanded Faculty Development Every business benefits from putting employees through relevant, ongoing training. That’s especially true with respect to faculty development at Medtech College’s campuses. “To demonstrate our commitment to becoming a stronger nursing presence, we’ve brought in national nursing consultants to educate our staff on best practices in nursing education,” Hall notes. According to Hall, Medtech nursing instructors are both experienced nurses and qualified educators. In order to build additional credentials, the campuses are encouraging faculty to obtain specialty nursing certifications in addition

Preparing Extraordinary Nurses at Medtech College to hiring new talent with extensive experience and expertise in a variety of nursing fields. Increased Program Rigor According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, research demonstrates that schools are most successful when they provide rigorous academic coursework, relevant learning opportunities, and meaningful relationships with instructors to help students achieve high standards. Medtech’s nursing campuses support that philosophy. A major element of the Extraordinary Medtech Nurses initiative encompasses building added rigor into the nursing programs by re-defining and re-structuring student policies and procedures. Included among the enhancements are an increased grading scale and strengthened admission requirements. Campuses will be even tougher on the

According to Hall’s team, those and other steps are being implemented to help every Medtech student who enters the program and graduates as a student nurse passes the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination - an examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States) and eventually stand among the profession’s elite. Improved NCLEX Pass Rates The goal of every nursing student is to pass the NCLEX exam to become licensed and work as a nurse. Because nurses must be able to competently administer potential lifesaving treatment, the exam is – rightfully – very rigorous. Many nursing graduates have the knowledge to pass the exam but, just like with ACT or SAT exams, some are better at standardized testing than others. NCLEX questions are asked in a very specific format and graduates must know how to answer in the same fashion. To help nursing students prepare for the exam, Medtech offers an expanded NCLEX review course as part of its curriculum. The campuses also have established new student advising and tutoring programs.

Nursing students who may be apprehensive about the NCLEX now have several new tools available to them at Medtech College. Meet ACEN Accreditation Standards Considered by many to be a ‘gold standard’ of nursing, the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) is a specialized accrediting agency for post-secondary and higher degree programs in nursing education. The ACEN accreditation process is strict…and extremely comprehensive. The Extraordinary Medtech Nurses program has been developed and designed to meet ACEN’s stringent standards so Indiana’s Medtech College campuses can eventually add that extra layer of credibility to their nursing programs.

A Medtech College instructor and her nursing students gather around a NOELLE™ Birthing and Maternal Simulator. Medical simulators give students vital hands-on experience for providing the best possible care and treatment to future patients. Described as part art and part science, nursing appeals to dedicated people with special interests, strengths and passion for helping others. Nursing is integral to Medtech’s education focus because the skills and knowledge nurses bring to medicine are transforming healthcare. Previous Medtech College graduates are doing just that at a significant cross-section of hospitals and healthcare networks state-wide, including St. Vincent Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, IU Hospital, Lutheran Health Network, Columbus Regional Hospital and Riley Hospital-Indianapolis, among others. Through its ongoing initiatives, Medtech’s Nursing program is committed to becoming even better with each passing day. With their focus on emerging healthcare needs… particularly in the nursing field, Medtech College’s Indianapolis, Greenwood and Fort Wayne campuses are valued contributors to communities throughout Indiana.

For information about preparing for nursing and healthcare careers at Medtech College, call the Indianapolis campus at 317-845-0300 or Greenwood at 317-534-0322.

We Get What We Expect

by Shelly Aristizabal

You become what you think about... the powerful “secret” of the Universe. We are creative Beings, though many tend to simply be reactive to what shows up in their lives. Many people, to avoid disappointment and rejection, will tend to shy away from expectations and believe that expectation is a breeding ground for resentment. In life the reality is we often do get what we hope for, what we expect, or how we set our attitude - our mindset. I looked up the definition of Hope: 1. (Noun) – a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. 2. (Noun) – a feeling of trust. 3. (Verb) – want something to happen or be the case. Interesting that even Mr. Webster uses Expectation within the definition of Hope. So, how can we have Hope without a degree of Expectation? Or, perhaps is expectations more focused on people? If we expect something good, it has a way of showing up. If we expect something bad, it too has a way of showing up. It reminds me of a story I heard about a wise clerk who worked at a convenience store in a small town in the mid-west. One day, a stranger walked in, picked up some bread and milk, and made his way to the cash register. “New to town?” the clerk asked. “Yep. Just moved here with my family,” the stranger replied. “Well, then let me be the first to welcome you,” the clerk offered, extending his hand. “Thanks,” the stranger said as he shook it. “Say, what are the people like in this town?” “Well … what were they like in the town you just left?” the clerk queried. “Oh, they were fantastic,” the stranger replied. “Friendly, upbeat, and generous. We

hated to leave.” “I know what you mean,” the clerk nodded. “I think that’s pretty much what you’ll find here, too.” A few days later, another stranger walked into the convenience store. Like the first, he picked up a few staples and headed to the cash register. The same clerk asked, “New to town?” “Yes,” the stranger mumbled. “Just arrived.” Following the same track, the clerk smiled and extended his hand. “Let me be the first to welcome you!” The stranger took his hand reluctantly, frowned, and quickly looked down. “So what are the people like in this town?” “Well … what were they like in the town you lived in last?” the clerk queried. “Not great,” he stammered. “They were cold, aloof, and selfish. We were glad to get out of there.” He looked up at the clerk. “I know what you mean,” the clerk affirmed. “I’m afraid that’s probably what you’ll find here, too.” If it’s true that we get what we expect, it’s worth noticing our thoughts, attitude and expectations—and shifting them toward a more positive outcome. Think negative or think positive, it’s a choice and a process. Positive thinking is a learned self-discipline that must be studied and practiced every day. Invest your time in positive people, doing positive things to grow your mind.

The New Criminal Code For the first time in more than 30 years, criminal law in Indiana will receive a huge overall on July 1, 2014. House Enrolled Act 1006 was passed by the General Assembly and completely restructures the Indiana Criminal Code. It is important to note these changes if you or a loved one are involved in the criminal justice system. The first major change is that felonies in Indiana have been restructured. In our current system our felonies are classified as A, B, C, or D with D being the least serious and A being the most serious. Murder is a separate category and will remain as such. Beginning July 1, 2014 felonies will be classified as Level 1 -6 with 6 being the least serious and 1 being the most serious. Not all of the Class D Felonies transfer to Level 6 felonies. One example is under our current criminal code Theft starts as a Class D Felony. Beginning on July 1st, theft of less than $750 is now a Class A Misdemeanor. The second major change is with the credit time an inmate will receive while incarcerated. For the most part, under

the current system, an inmate earns 1 day credit for each day served. Beginning in July, only those convicted of Level 6 felonies or a Misdemeanor will receive 1 day credit for each day served. For those convicted of Level 5 felonies or higher, credit time begins as 1 day credit for each 3 days served. For example, under the current law, if an inmate is sentenced to 100 days incarceration they would serve 50 actual days. Starting in July, if a person is convicted of a Level 5 felony or higher and is sentenced to 100 days incarceration, they would have to serve approximately 75 actual days. The changes are too numerous to capture on paper; however, the criminal code can be found in Indiana Code section 35 for further information. As you continue to learn about these changes, keep in mind that they only apply to crimes committed after June 30, 2014. Even if you are sentenced after June 30, 2014, if the crime was committed prior to that date, the old criminal code will apply.

Ceramic Implants: A Healthy Solution for Missing Teeth! Tooth loss can affect the way you eat and speak. It can affect with the alignment of your other teeth. It is an issue that should be addressed sooner rather than later. But how can you replace that missing tooth? Patients today have three big options: • A dental bridge, which anchors a false tooth on the adjacent teeth • A partial denture, fitting snugly around existing teeth yet easily removed as needed • A dental implant, which is an artificial tooth root that is inserted into the patients jawbone. Single or multitooth restorations can be anchored permanently and reliably just like on a natural tooth. Leading dental implant systems like Z-Systems achieve 99% implant survival rate in the first year and excellent longevity over time. Naturally white, metal-free Zirkolith® implants from Z-Systems are a highly aesthetic and reliable solution with solid scientific evidence and excellent clinical results. Dental Implants from Z-Systems Zirkolith® are a logical and reliable solution to replace a lost natural tooth. Even in the unlikely case of gum recession, in contrast to titanium implants, no grey metal rings become visible. “They’re more stable, lifelike and functional than bridges or dentures,” says Indianapolis holistic dentist Dr. Caryn Guba. “They’re comfortable to chew on and look fantastic – the next best thing to a natural tooth you can have!” When placing dental implants Dr. Guba and her practice partner Dr. Katherine So always opt for ceramic implants over the more commonly used titanium. There are good reasons for this. The Z-System zirconia implants Guba Dental places are entirely metal-free, as are the crowns fitted onto

them. “They are biocompatible,” says Dr. So, “and beautiful.” Used in aerospace technology due to its durability under pressure and high heat, zirconia is the ideal choice in metalfree restorative dentistry. It's also hypoallergenic compared to titanium, which can cause allergic reactions in metal sensitive individuals. Zirconia has been shown to osseointegrate or "bond" effectively with the jawbone and is naturally resistant to plaque and bacteria. Also preferred aesthetically for its white color, it blends well with the natural gum line, without the gray, metallic appearance of titanium implants. “They look and feel just like a natural tooth,” adds Dr. So. “ They last for a long time, making them an excellent investment.” She adds that dental implants boast a success rate of 95% or better. “Holistic dentistry treats the whole person – body, mind and spirit – with a conservative and preventive approach,” says Dr. Guba. “We do only what’s necessary to support good oral health and good systemic health. The cutting edge implant technology we use gives us another way to help our patients achieve their goals of a beautiful smile and total wellness.” Dr. Guba is holistic dentist offering a wide range of biocompatible dental and health oriented products to her Indianapolis patients. Having worked in the dental industry since 1981, Dr. Guba continues her education and has received multiple certificates from the L.D. Pankey Institute and the Center for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. So, a California native, joined Dr. Guba as an Associate Dentist in 2012, says “Fixing teeth is great, improving overall health is better. Our goal is to provide patients with the knowledge necessary to keep them on the path to wellness.
