Ten Things to Know about Your Divorce Part I of III by Jennifer Hostetter and Tamie Jo Morog

A divorce is a very trying time in a person’s life. If you are faced with a divorce, the first decision you need to make is whether you want to legally represent yourself or retain an attorney. While the decision to hire an attorney is solely up to you, few people would recommend self-representation. The legal system is complex and an attorney can help you through the procedural and evidentiary process. Without sufficient knowledge of the legal system, you may end up with an unsatisfactory outcome that may not be subject to subsequent modification. Second, in Indiana, once you file for divorce, 60 days must lapse before the Court can finalize the divorce. The file date is different from the separation date. The file date is the day the Petition for Dissolution is filed with the Court. Often, parties are separated before the Petition is filed; however, the relevant date to start the clock is the filing date. Depending on the issues, this does 2

not necessarily mean your divorce will be finalized in 60 days. In the alternative, if parties enter into a settlement agreement, the final hearing can be waived and the settlement agreement can be entered as a final order once the 60 days have lapsed. Third, Social media may cause negative effects on your divorce. Everything you post on social media is discoverable and may be admissible in court. Courts have ordered parties to turn over their username and password to the opposing attorney in order to download and access any information that is stored or has been deleted from a party’s social media account. Either temporarily delete your account or be cautious in what you are posting. Additionally, you run the risk of your children seeing what you post about the divorce on your social media account. It is not in a child’s best interests to be in any way involved in the divorce proceeding.

Happiness Is A Choice It has been a long time since I read a book that has so much potential to change how we feel, what we think and how we behave. Currently the editor of this magazine and I are reading A Complaint Free World and we have been amazed at how it has transformed how we interact with the world. The purpose of the book is simple; you are expected to go for 21 days without complaining. You wear a purple band on your wrist and each time you find yourself complaining or being critical or sarcastic, you switch your wristband to the opposite wrist and begin the 21 day challenge again. Although initially, I believed this would be an easy assignment. I see myself as a positive person and very much believe in reframing which is looking at the "positive spin" on things therefore I believed that I could get to 21 days a lot faster than most. My colleagues and clients on the other hand have moaned and groaned and said they felt this would be an impossible task to go 21 days without complaining…this strengthened my challenge! I had hoped to complete the 21 days in succession. Although I cannot report this type of success, I can say that it has made a huge difference in what comes out of my mouth. This is the purpose of the book: to think before you speak and put out words that are positive and uplifting. When we become more deliberate about how we speak we put out a different energy that affects the world and we change how we view things all at the same time. I believe that happiness is a choice and we have the power to bring about happiness if we can change the way we think about life. Let me give you an example. Today I'm at home because of a terrible snowstorm. I could focus on the wages that I am losing because I am not seeing my private clients 4

or I can choose to focus on what is good about this situation. I Carol Juergensen Sheets can say to myself "this is a fabulous time to enjoy nature, to clean out my closet, to pet my puppy, and to write this article." Both thoughts are true but which one will make me happier? And when I'm happier I am more likely to enjoy my day, be more productive, and be more pleasant to be around. It's a no-brainer for me… I choose to be happy. In this book the author challenges the readers to look at life from a different perspective and when you change what you think, the world around you changes. I teach this in cognitive behavioral class. What I know to be true is that when you have a thought it affects feelings which affect your behaviors. That is as universal as the idea of gravity. Why not become a master of our thoughts? Why not exude happiness? Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were all ambassadors for happiness in this world? So I invite you to take this 21 day challenge. It would be very helpful if you read the book A Complaint Free World by Rev. Will Bowen and ordered a "Complaint Free World" purple bracelet to wear on your wrist and enjoy changing your thoughts and changing your life. We really are "powerful beyond measure" ... we just need to access our own power from within! Carol Juergensen Sheets LCSW PCC is a psychotherapist and personal life coach. A mom with three sons. A grandmother with a 30-year heroin addiction. An 18-year-old with no family. A widow suffering from depression. Ladies meet for a weekly Bible study. While these are very different situations, all of these women came through the doors of Wheeler Mission’s Center for Women & Children (CWC) and found the help and hope they so desperately needed. Hundreds of women and mothers with children come to CWC seeking food, clothing, and housing. They find these vital needs supplied, but they also experience love and compassion, bringing rest to their weary souls. CWC exists to meet the physical, emotional, education, vocational, and spiritual needs of the homeless women, mothers, and children whom we serve. CWC strives to provide a place of rest for the homeless women and children who come to us. We want each of them to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in a healing environment that teaches accountability and responsibility through grace. Our short- and long-term programs are designed to facilitate comprehensive life change that enables re-entry into society while providing a solid foundation for a stable future. Within CWC, there are five main programs: Emergency Shelter Care, Connect to Care (Special Needs), Fresh Start (Working Guest), Family Development, and Higher Ground Addiction Recovery. Our Emergency Shelter Care Program for women and mothers with children is a 30-day residential program designed to assist women with basic temporal needs while assessing the factors that led them to homelessness. Ladies are offered life-skill and spiritual life classes, recreation, and the opportunity to hear about our other long-term programs that can help them with recovery, securing safe housing and employment, or mental health care. Our Connect to Care (C2C) Program is for ladies who have the additional burden of mental illness. The C2C program allows these women to connect with local mental health providers 8

while having the stability of housing at CWC. The stay for this program is typically 6-9 months. Our Fresh Start (Working Guest) Program is a paint during craft 6-month residential Children time while their moms program designed work or attend classes. to assist women to become independent through job training, job procurement, and stabilization. Guests receive individualized case management, educational training, work therapy, career development and life-skill classes, spiritual training, and counseling. The goal is to have the guests move to safe affordable housing within six months, find employment, mend broken relationships, demonstrate life change, and be involved in a follow-up program. Our Family Development Program for mothers and children is a residential program lasting 6-9 months. It is designed to provide stabilization, spiritual development, and skill development through life-skill and educational classes. When mothers are in classes, the children attend age-appropriate educational programs. Positive mother and child interaction is facilitated and encouraged. Our Higher Ground Addiction Recovery Program offers women with addictions hope, sobriety, and change. This residential, long-term program provides a loving, Christcentered environment of regeneration and transformation where physical, spiritual, and emotional needs are met. Ladies are assisted as they establish a strong support system—including mentoring relationships, family relationships, and church and support groups—and prepare to integrate back into the community, while remaining clean and sober. Our desire is to see life change in an atmosphere of grace through sound biblical teaching, recovery classes, and life-skill training. In 2013, CWC provided more than 32,000 nights of lodging to homeless women and mothers with children and served nearly 50,000 meals to these individuals. Visit Wheeler Mission’s website at www.WheelerMission.org for information on how you can get involved by volunteering or donating.

SPOTLIGHT Carol Juergensen Sheets LCSW, PCC, CSAT is both a psychotherapist and a life coach in Indianapolis. She has worked in the field for over 33 years and made it her mission to educate and inspire people to create the life they deserve. After doing psychotherapy primarily with children, families, couples and individuals, she decided that she wanted to reach people on a larger level and find ways to connect to people that went beyond the therapy office. She secured a column with the Indianapolis Star and had over 800,000 readers who looked forward to her Carol the Coach column for over five years. Her column preceded her three radio call in shows on WXNT and WIBC for over 5 years. Her last show, Sex, Love and Relationships on Saturday night kept the Indianapolis community tuned in to how they could improve Carol teaching women how to live their best lives their relationships by tweaking their relationship behaviors. She jokingly says that she considers herself the "resident psychotherapist and life coach" for the Indianapolis community. "I love interacting with people who may not have the resources to seek out a therapist but can email or call me on the air and get advice that can change their life!” Soon everybody knew Carol as Carol the Coach. When asked about her profession she tells people "I have the best job in the world! I am a psychotherapist, speaker, radio talk show host, author, and personal life coach. Early on in my life I learned that my passion was to help people and educate them about their own potential and I have spent a lifetime getting to do that." She owns a company called Strategic Therapies and Coaching. Providing both mental health and personal life coaching which assists clients in changing their lives from the inside out. She teaches a unique blend of skill sets that transforms people into who they want to be. Psychotherapy typically

focuses on what people need to heal most often from their childhood while life coaching teaches them how they can take their life to the next level. She explains that often times people need to process and work through their childhood wounds and release them so that they can transform their life. "After the wounds are healed, I can help them to actualize their potential! I get to be a part of the whole transformation which is so gratifying and rewarding." Carol knows how important it is to have faith and trust in both the psychotherapy and life coaching process. She's worked with thousands of people and has run a variety of groups including women's empowerment groups, cognitive behavioral groups, self Carol doing what she loves esteem groups, best...talking to listeners On WIBC men's groups, and sexual addiction groups. Her specialty includes women's issues, anxiety management, depression, sexual abuse, marital therapy, and now she is the only certified sexual addictions therapist in the Indianapolis area. Carol is always looking for a way to reinvent herself. She assesses what the community needs and goes after the certifications and training to become a specialist. Carol is available for consultation at her office located at 3815 River Crossing Pkwy., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240. AN EXPERIMENT Have you ever wondered how some people are always calm in a storm? I am certain that most of us have at one point in our lives or another. That question came to me years ago when I was in college. I lived at home through college in order to save money and went through college on an otherwise full academic scholarship. I knew it was important that I make good grades; thus, I tried never to skip class and never stay up all night to study and cram for a final exam. My philosophy was to study consistently through the semester and to focus hard during final weeks. That seemed to work. This brings me to my "experiment." I looked around campus and saw that most people were very stressed and some were acting like maniacs (maybe the result of staying up all night studying for an exam). While I, too, was stressed during finals weeks, I thought there must be a better way. As I was walking across the beautiful campus on one October day (we were on quarters), I wondered what would happen if I would treat Lisa Adler those weeks Trust & Estate Practice of finals (in my Group

mind) as if they were weeks at the beach. In other words, I would try to be just as calm through the days of focused studying as I would be on a vacation. I realized that it would be a state of mind over which I had some Marti Starkey Chair, Trust & Estate control, so I set Practice Group out to be just as calm as I could be during those weeks of hard work and focused, disciplined study. The result of this "experiment" was amazing. I was, in fact, able to do just that. Those weeks of final exams became for me a time of joy and peace, and I realized a very important life lesson, which has served me well over the many years since. Our attitudes and our state of mind do not depend on our circumstances. Our attitude is one of the very few things over which we exercise control in this thing called life. Give my little "experiment" a try. You may be surprised what you will find in the midst of your own storm. by Marti Starkey

Relationships... Relationships are the key to making almost anything happen. They are the foundation to the quality of our lives and to the results we get. There was once a small boy and girl building a sand castle on the beach. They spent hours building towers, walls, and a moat. As they were building the tide crept slowly in. Suddenly, a big wave wiped it all away. An adult nearby felt sorry for them because of all the work they had put into building the castle, until the two children held hands and ran off together, laughing as they scampered down the beach. It was then that the adult realized a simple truth: it is fun building an empire, but the lasting fun is in having friends you can continue to laugh with and be with long after all that you have spent your life building has washed away. Love is the greatest thing in life and should be the main focus in everything we do. We seek many things during our lifetime, hoping to find fulfillment in them. But without love, these things fall short of the desired goal. When we put our time and energy into things that do not fulfill us, we feel frustrated. How do we best express love? Love gives... Give some thought to the relationships in your life. You can either contribute to

or contaminate these relationships by what you bring to them. Who do you need to forgive, or be more compassionate to? If you have unresolved anger or resentment, you must learn that you do not have to be angry just because you have the right to be. You cannot give away what you do not have. Think about this in the literal sense. No matter how much you might like to, you can’t give away a million dollars if you don’t have it. Similarly, you cannot give pure and accepting love from a pure and accepting heart if you have neither. Explore unfinished emotional business and the times you have said “I can’t forgive, because they aren’t sorry and they don't’ deserve or even want my forgiveness.” Realize that forgiveness is a choice. You have to choose it. Treasure your relationships. Cultivate them like a garden. Don’t neglect. Can you make a list of people you want to reach out to? Maybe you’ve been busy and have been meaning to make some calls to people who are important to you. Spend your time on what is most important -- building relationships should be at the top of your list. Are you taking care of the people you care most about?

Demystifying the Colonic What is a colonic (colon irrigation, colon hydrotherapy)? Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of drugs. By introducing filtered & temperature-regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting Nancy Spahr, in an evacuation through natural Founder peristalsis. This process is repeated throughout the session. Why Should I be concerned about my colon? The colon has been referred to as the sewer system of the body. We would rather not think about it and most of us don’t until our health becomes poor or we feel constipated or have diarrhea. Colonics best benefit the body due to release of accumulated congestion in the bowel. Is a colonic painful? The infusion of water is very gentle, modest

and a comfortable experience for most people. Occasionally, if your bowel movements have been infrequent, you may feel mild cramping (usually gas) until eliminated. Where does the waste go? Does it smell? No smells! Waste and odors travel through a viewing tube and then goes down the drain, like flushing the toilet. Will Colon Hydrotherapy remove the good bacteria? There’s little research indicating a colonic’s effect on bacteria in the colon. Most people are known to have very acidic colons, full of toxic material that acts as a breeding ground for parasites and pathogenic bacteria. If any good bacteria or electrolytes are eliminated from the colon they can easily be replenished by a probiotic beverage after the session. Colon Hydrotherapy is best used in combination with adequate nutrient and fluid intake as well as exercise. Today’s sophisticated technology promotes both safety and sanitation of this popular cleansing practice.

Carolyn's Story

About a year ago, After I’d given up on ever losing the weight I had put on over the past 10 years. I tried everything out there and nothing worked. One day I saw an Before ad for Pounds and Inches Away in Castleton. I called them and decided to try their HCG Weight Loss Program. I started the program in September of 2012and was amazed how easily the weight came off. The staff at Pounds and Inches Away were very supportive and helpful. They were always available to answer my questions. They even called me to help with my accountability. Yes, I had to follow the program, but with their direction I was able to lose weight and keep it off. I completed two rounds between Labor Day 2012 and Easter 2013 – and I lost 52 lbs. Losing the weight made me realize – I wasn’t as old as I felt! My blood pressure is down, my cholesterol is improving. My health, overall, is significantly improved from a year ago. It wasn’t easy, but it was absolutely worth it. I feel alive again and Before After it’s all because I walked into Pounds and Inches Away Castleton and let them get me started on a new path.

Hilton's Story

After

I was significantly overweight. My doctor was concerned that my weight would cause certain health problems as I aged. Before Pounds and Inches Away helped me lose 70 pounds over the course of six months! I found the program during the first 40 days to be easy and safe. I learned to eat much healthier and that was something my wife and I wanted to do for years. I followed the suggested meals, measuring the protein consistently. I had an apple as a snack in the afternoon or evening as well as learned to drink water. The maintenance period offered the opportunity to get reintroduced to some of the other foods that I liked, but in moderation. I have been able to maintain my weight since stopping with the drops. One highlight is that I have not had a Coke or Pepsi in over 19 months! Kathryn and her team are very supportive and helpful. The Pounds and Inches Away regime works, is safe, and you will love the results!

We have SUPER Vision, we can see you thin! Take us up on our commitment to YOU!
