The Genetics in Link Behind Your Child’s Behavior Do you have a child who is having difficulty following the rules or does not seem responsive to the natural consequences that you impose with regularity? You are in a quandary because you are at a loss and you are starting to question what you could do differently. Does your child fail to accomplish the goals that you know he or she is capable of, and for the life of you, you just can’t figure out where you went wrong? Most likely you have examined your parenting and you know you weren’t perfect, but your parenting techniques worked well with the other kids in your household. You probably have had a child who excelled and seems to be assimilating well with his friends, in the neighborhood and at preschool or at school. This further confuses you because you have compared your parenting skills and you know that you handled both children in similar ways. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about parenting is that many of the parenting techniques that worked on your last child or have been identified as excellent parenting strategies” may not work with you “challenging child”. Although there are inevitably some mistakes you made that contributed to your child’s difficulties you are perplexed as to why your child seems so non-responsive to the limits, boundaries and incentives that you provide. Now we all know that parenting is trial and error and each kid is truly different. You couldn’t possibly

treat them the same, because they aren’t. The reality is that children oftentimes have inherited personality characteristics Carol Juergensen Sheets from earlier generations that play into their sense of identity. That is why some kids excel while others falter. Some children are born with that drive to achieve while others seem to chronically underestimate their abilities. Research show that some kids seem to be born with addictive features while others seem detached from any external reward. Some kids look at life with that half empty mentality while others seem to see life without any barriers. If your child is challenging or an underachiever, he or she may not have the resiliency skills to know what is in his or her best interest. How do you guide them down the right path? Much of that depends on their age and circumstance. If you have a child who is having difficulties and they are preschool or elementary age, you will need to set up an infrastructure that enables others to share, it will be important for you to seek professional guidance if they seem “lost”. More than likely, you have already exhausted your list of things to do to get a child motivated.

ABC at a Glance

Get to know The Applied Behavior Center for Autism Celebrating 20 Years as Indiana’s Largest & Longest Running ABA Therapy Provider ABC has grown to be the largest and longest running ABA therapy provider in the state of Indiana. With 20 years under our belt, we are building brighter futures every day. We are now proud to offer 7 outpatient facilities throughout the state. This includes our Indy North Center, Early Childhood Center, Carmel Center, Indy West Center, Greenwood Center, Richmond Center and our Terre Haute Center. Each of our centers offers a unique blend of amenities including customcrafted indoor gyms and individual therapy rooms.

Founded by an Autism Mother ABC was founded in 1997 when CEO, Sherry Quinn’s son Michael was diagnosed with autism. At the time, autism was a rare diagnosis. In fact, Michael was the only child in his entire school district with autism. After doing extensive research, Sherry realized that Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy was the best possible treatment for her son. At the time, that service was not offered anywhere within the state of Indiana. Sherry set out to change that and The Applied Behavior Center for Autism was created!

Offering More than ABA Therapy At ABC, we offer a wide variety of highquality services. These include: ABA Therapy, Behavior Consulting, Diagnostic Testing, and Indoor Swim Lessons. We are also now enrolling services for speech and occupational therapy.

Specialized Programming for Teens & Adults Our LIFE Program (Learning in Functional Environments) serves ages 10 and older. LIFE is a full-day program that uses the science of ABA to teach skills that promote independence and quality of life. Children and teens in this program learn to work on functional skills within a simulated home environment and real life, communitybased settings. Important skills such as budgeting money, grocery shopping, peer interactions, doing laundry, hygiene and more are worked on within this program.

Neurotypical Peer Interaction at the Early Childhood Center Interactions between a child with autism and a typical peer often require less prompting, and are very rewarding. At the Early Childhood Center typical peers are present, and therapeutic opportunities for interaction are incorporated into many children’s individualized treatment plans.

We Provide Full Insurance Management Services (Free of Charge) At ABC, we understand that there are several stresses and pressures that come with searching for the right services for your child. Sorting through insurance struggles should not be another stressor added to that list. Because of this, our trained team of experts handles all insurance processing on behalf of our clients. This is a service that we offer to all families completely free of charge.

Spotlight Sanders Pediatric Dentistry was founded on the idea that our children are our most precious gifts. Dr. Brian Sanders previously taught at the University of Maryland Dental School and was the Director of the Kennedy Institute for Handicapped Children in Maryland prior to becoming a faculty member and Professor at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He is currently the Director of the Dental Department at Riley Hospital for Children and the Director of the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry. Throughout his academic career he has maintained a private practice, which has given him the opportunity to incorporate his experience and knowledge in the care of children and adolescents. Dr. Sanders provides comprehensive oral health care for infants, children and adolescents. He specializes in the treatment of children with physical, emotional and medical health care needs. Dr. Sanders practice philosophy has always been to take the necessary time to learn about the child and family prior to any treatment. This often puts both the child and family at ease. It is critical to foster relationships with the family and to encourage trust. Success is not the completion of the dental work but having a patient that looks forward to returning for their next visit. Dr. Sanders and his team would love to have you join Our Dental Home. Please call 317.818.2200 and schedule an appointment today. Please say “I found it in the IndyKids’Directory!” Thanks!
