When Luke was 6 we enrolled him in beginner classes at Jerry Hansman’s Okinawan Karate to instill confidence and help him with body awareness. We had hoped he would enjoy it and stick with it long enough to gain the skills required to become a black belt.
confidence and leadership skills that will help him throughout his high school career, college and any job he ever holds.
Luke is now 13 years old and has been training for 7 years. The program has far exceeded our expectations and has helped Luke in areas of his life we never even considered. He is now a third degree black belt and has trained and graduated on each of the six traditional Okinawan weapons and also spends his summers as an instructor for the dojo. Because of these leadership qualities Luke was chosen to be a mentor and leader at his school as well. Jerry Hansman’s Karate program has helped Luke gain focus, discipline, self2
As parents we are grateful for his knowledge of how to defend himself but even more so we appreciate the focus on respect and honor. Sensei Jerry teaches the kids how to control themselves, gain the upper hand in physical confrontation and diffuse violent situations without acting out violently; a very important quality these days. Sensei Jerry has always been a strong and positive role model for our son and we have the utmost of respect for him and his training program. If you are considering karate for your child or yourself, we highly recommend coming in to see what Jerry Hansman’s Karate is all about.

DEBUNKING THE OUTDATED SINGLE MOTHER STEROTYPES Independent Mothers The erroneous assumptions made about single mothers. When people discover that I’m a single mother, I often notice a distinct change in their attitude towards me. Sometimes they become visibly uncomfortable squirming in their seats not sure how to deal with me. I’ve realized that there are still a lot of misconceptions about single mothers, outdated stereotypes that once had some basis in reality, but no longer hold true. WE ARE NOT VICTIMS TO BE PITIED Sometimes people will tell me how sorry they feel for me, which is curious, because I’m not sorry. I’ve met very few single mothers, regardless of their circumstances, who feel sorry for themselves. When I first announced my single mother status to the world, I could tell the friends who knew me well vs. my acquaintances. My close friends rejoiced and celebrated my new found independence where as my acquaintances felt sorry for me. When people tell me they don’t know how I do it. How do I raise two kids on my own? I answer “Because I do.” It’s really as simple as that. OUR CHILDREN ARE NOT IN BROKEN HOMES Every time someone makes an excuse for another person with bad behavior by saying “Well his/her parents are divorced; He/she has had a hard life,” I am disgusted. My children are loved as much as anyone’s. My children are afforded every opportunity. My children will never use their parents’ divorce as an excuse to behave badly or treat other people poorly. WE ARE NOT DESPERATE FOR A MAN (OR WOMAN) One of the assumptions that surprised me the
most is that I must be desperate for a man in my life. I couldn’t believe how many people would try to “console” me after my separation with “You still look so young and beautiful; you’ll have no problem finding someone new.” Or how some married women would immediately distrust me as if I was secretly chasing their spouse. Many single women (mothers or not) aren’t single because they don’t want to be in a relationship; they want to be in a relationship with the right person (and cheating spouses don’t fit into that category of right person). This does not make us desperate, it makes us discerning. It was three years after my separation before I met my right person, but I would have been fine waiting for another ten. And if I never met the right person, I would have been OK with that too. WE ARE NOT POOR AND DESTITUTE As a single mother, it’s often assumed that I’m not financially solvent, but with the exception of my car payment, I have almost no debt, and I live within my means better than most married couples. Do I have as much income as I would in a two income household? No. Yet most of us single mothers are doing OK, are on the way to doing OK, or we’re doing better than OK. Currently there are more single women than married women in the USA. Now that we have both economic and political independence, women no longer have to settle for the “wrong” person for economic security. We no longer have to stay in unhealthy marriages. Furthermore, if we don’t find the “right” person, there is nothing holding us back from being a mother if we choose. All these old stereotypes are no longer relevant to us.

Spotlight CaringSmiles 4u, a “three-location multi-practice Dental Home”, is devoted to comprehensive and preventive dental care for children, teens, and adults in a caring, fun and gentle manner in our lovely fun-filled, beach theme atmosphere for our children patients and a calming, elegant décor for our adult patients. At CaringSmiles 4u, Dr. Taylor and her staff are concerned about your total health care. We seek to instill good oral hygiene in our patients as well as to teach you that the dentist is your friend and is not just there for when you hurt. Establishing CaringSmiles 4u as your “Dental Home,” provides us the opportunity to implement preventive dental health habits that keep you and your family free from dental/oral disease. We focus on prevention, early detection and treatment of dental diseases, and keep current on the latest advances in dentistry. This will enable you and your child to maintain a beautiful smile for a lifetime. Our goal is to help all our patients feel good about visiting
the dentist and to teach you how to care for your teeth. Our main concern here at CaringSmiles 4u is what is best for you and your family and to build trust and confidence that will last a lifetime. Along with establishing a good oral hygiene routine, Dr. Taylor also understands the importance of a healthy smile in developing self-esteem. This is especially true in childhood and teenage years when children begin socialization and interacting with other children. “Your smile is one of the first things that is seen when you meet someone, and it is important to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile,” notes Dr. Taylor. Thus, we have opened our new Orthodontic office to meet your braces needs as well; all under one umbrella, to ensure our families a smooth process to maintaining total health for your dental needs. At CaringSmiles 4u Children’s Dentistry, Dr. Taylor and her well-equipped staff see children as young as one year old. Establishing a rapport with the parent and child is important to Dr. Taylor and is the key to successful treatment. Our patients are our most important asset and we strive to develop long-lasting, trusting relationships. We welcome new patients and look forward to seeing you at one of our three CaringSmiles 4u locations (Children’s Dentistry, Adult Dentistry, and Orthodontic Care).

ABC Proudly Offers In-House Training and Certification for All New Staff Do you have a heart for children and teens with special needs? Are you looking for a career that allows you to truly make a difference every day? At The Applied Behavior Center for Autism, we pride ourselves on our extensive in-house training and certification programs that allow our new employees to grow and excel within this exciting and growing field. If you have the heart for this industry, we have the ability to train you and teach you to work in this field. Making a Difference Every Day At ABC, our employees find more than a career; they find a calling. Each day, our staff works hard to make a tangible difference in the lives of children and teens with special needs. Our therapists form a strong bond with our patients and together, we work toward and celebrate milestones in the lives of our patients. “This job is unlike anything else in the world,” said Sara Clark, BCaBA. “You might feel like you have a tough day one day and then the very next day, you meet with parents and they tell you that their child gave them a hug for the very first time or they responded when their sibling said their name for the first time. It’s moments like that that make this job special. When you work here, things are constantly being put into perspective for you. You are constantly reminded why you are here and why what you are doing really and truly matters.” New Training Program ABC is proud to offer our newest program which is an in-house training that prepares our therapy staff to receive the credential of Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). This is the newest credential offered by The Behavior Analyst Certification Board's (BACB). The training for this certification is provided free-of-charge to all incoming employees. RBTs are trained and qualified paraprofessionals that are responsible for the direct implementation of behavior analytic programs and interventions
written by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and/or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs). To become an RBT, the individual must complete 40 hours of training in behavior analysis. Then they must pass both a practical Competency Assessment with a BCBA or BCaBA and a written test maintained by the BACB. After obtaining their credential as an RBT, the RBT may only practice under the direct supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. The BACB outlines several supervision standards and requirements for RBTs to ensure that consumers receive quality services. The Applied Behavior Center for Autism values this newest credential offered by the BACB and recognizes that it provides more credibility and strength to the services that we provide. The RBT credential gives our patients a way of knowing that their direct care staff typically referred to as ABA therapists - have received adequate training in our field and are qualified to deliver our services correctly and effectively. Position Requirements To be considered for the new RBT position, applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma. College degrees and previous experience with children are preferred but not required. Applicants must have a positive attitude and strong communication skills. After being hired, employees must be First Aide trained and CPR certified. (We provide these trainings). How to Apply Are you interested in a career that changes lives? Resistant Kids It's extremely tough to be a child in today's world. Children are inundated with conflicting messages that tell them that they are in charge when developmentally they need to have strong parents who decide their fate. Kids have two universal needs that they will likely reject sometime in their development. Kids need you to love them unconditionally-even during the days, weeks or months when you don't like them. And kids need to know that you're in control at all times. They need to believe that you are in the power seat. (Even when it seems that their only mission in life is to knock you out of that very powerful position.) What do you do when your child is at an age when they seem to reject your involvement at every turn? You involve them anyway. Kids need to participate in family activities because they are part of the family. You can't make them have a good time or force them to interact with you, but you can still take them with you on family vacations and insist that they participate in family routines. As we continue to move towards being an informational and technological society, we're seeing how kids are moving away from family values and choosing socializing with friends via cell phones, Instagram and Twitter.
What can a parent to do? Emphasize the family values no matter what power struggles ensue. When you instill family rules, you're telling your kids that they are important, even when they would prefer to do other things. Sit them down and explain to them that there are some rules that will be enforced for the sake of the family. All forms of communication are to be turned off at 9. Kids need to unwind and attend to the next day's activities. It will feel life shattering to be cut off of from the social sphere but they will live
through it. (I know many children who go to bed with their cell phones and talk throughout the night. It's no wonder they have difficultly in school!) Secondly, kids need Carol Juergensen Sheets to feel your faith in them, even when your fears seem to outweigh your hopes. Never give up on your children's' ability to come around to your values for the family. When they are rejecting you and your ideas, love them anyway. You may want to write out an affirming statement that instills faith in your children. It might be as simple as "Johnny has been brought up with the right values and will turn his life around" or "Jenny is an intelligent adolescent and will make the right choices as she matures". Find some time daily to wrap your arms around your children. When they won't let you, do it anyway. If they absolutely refuse to let you get close, imagine through visualization that you are holding them tight. It will change your fears about them not loving you. It also will reinforce the love you may not be feeling towards them. Don't take it personally when they reject you with ever fiber of their soul. This is a normal reaction to having constraints on their time. We live in a society that gives kids too many privileges, and rights. They don't have a healthy balance of what is important for them in their lives. It's easy to feel rejected by your children when you provide them with the much-needed structure. Remember that they are rejecting your control, even if it feels like they are rejecting you!
