If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Somewhere that is close to nature and also close to conveniences. Somewhere that is supportive of creativity. At the moment that place is Hobart.
S N OW QUEEN'S GA R D E N by Natasha Langham The Snow Queen’s Garden is one local label guaranteed to induce a semi stampede of devoted followers at every market appearance. Drawing on her Russian and German heritage, Natasha Langham has dreamed up, designed and painstakingly handmade (down to every teeny tiny stitch!) a range of adorable decorations that include a selection of woodland creatures, fruit segments and her famed Russian inspired matryoshka dolls to name just a few. thesnowqueen1@hotmail.com snowqueensgarden.blogspot.com.au
Who’s your favourite Tasmanian designer / maker + why? Tasmania has so many talented, incredible people this could be a very long list. Enormous respect for the talent and skills of Mel, from Dick and Dora. The woman is amazing, a total powerhouse of ideas and passion! Also adore the work of Lara from Curmilla. She has a wonderful way of seeing the world, full of whimsy and wonder.

HUNTER SEEKER MAKER by Simone Pfister Hunter Seeker Maker is the brand new creative enterprise undertaken by Simone Pfister. The label was born in 2012, and we’re chuffed it will be joining the market for 2013! The range reflects a love of the eclectic elegance that has given Simone a staunch following and well deserved recognition for her previous work. Primarily jewellery, but with a nice smattering of home wares and prints, definitely one to watch!

What does your work / studio space look like? My studio space is what you'd call a dumping ground, there's an old piano, surfboard, tins of house paint and loads of boxes filled with unwanted toys. There are however essentials such as a huge 3 metre length table for laying and cutting fabric, my trusty sewing machines and my ever faithful t-shirt carousel for screen printing. Messy or clean, it still is my favourite room.

JA N A & BODIE by Jana Gowans Jana and Bodie is the young, contemporary jewellery label created by the clever Jana Gowans. Featuring geometric inspired design, hand painted elements and lovely Tasmanian timbers – her collection is on trend and definitely on our wish list. We can’t wait to see their exciting new additions for 2013.

DISH PIG by Jen Murnaghan
Jen Murnaghan’s homewares range Dishpig, was born out of her frustration in finding stylish souvenirs. Irish expat Jen set about remedying this gaping hole in the market, by creating a selection of uniquely Tasmanian tea towels and cushions. Her designs and products celebrate Tasmania, as well as providing tourists with a fun and chic reminder of our island home.
jen@dishpig.net dishpig.net
What colour palette will you be incorporating into your designs for 2013? I’m so in love with colour and I’m working with gelato shades throughout summer while continuing my exploration into typography.

MABEL by Dave Boyer Mabel designer Dave Boyer began his creative process with some dirty old ply and acrylic, a handheld drill and an upside-down floor sander. While that might not appeal to some, this refreshingly organic/nitty gritty approach, combined with a sincere and ethical design process and some interesting aesthetical influences has resulted in a range of jewels that are totally original and supremely cool. Featuring stacked layers of timber pared with fun pops of coloured acrylic, Mabel wares are a perfect example of good Australian design…an awesome product with a feel good ethos behind it.

LITTLE SNOR I NG by Edwina Morris Possibly the cutest wares we’ve ever come across, Little Snoring products turn us all into panda loving, simpering sillies. While her homewares and clothing are super fun and gorgeously made, it is her tiny pocket pandas and endearingly snooty little French Poodles that really hit a nerve. Edwina designs all her products with a good dose of whimsy and a fearless approach to colour.

d i ck + d o ra by Mel French Dick + Dora may be best known for their hugely popular and (huge in size!) Christmas decorations that have found their way into stylish homes and retailers nationwide. We also fancy their collection of statement hand finished jewellery and home wares using sustainable certified fine Tasmanian timbers, wools, acrylics and enamels.
dickanddora@dickanddora.com dickanddora.com
What colour palette / MATERIALS will you be incorporating into your designs for 2013? I’m working on incorporating more pattern designs, etched texture and direct print techniques to my designs as a new way of introducing colour. As always the Dora range will feature timber and bold colour combos.

BONNIE & G by Rebecca Coote Bonnie&G is a home + garden ware design venture for Tasmanian glass artist and sculptor Rebecca Coote. Rebecca sells her market/ design wares under this label to enable her to expand her scope without the constraints of her gallery based arts practice (her glass sculptures are seen nationwide and were showcased at COLLECT 2010 in London!) Joining her as a guest designer for Bonnie&G is Elizabeth Turvey who runs a family farm at Buckland. This wonderfully eclectic pairing has produced an inspired range of glass and farm-found objects repurposed into beautiful and unusual wares. rc@rebeccacoote.com rebeccacoote.com

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be + why? A remote lighthouse. I think they are architecturally beautiful and their histories are fascinating, as is the landscapes they are sited in. And I like the idea of solitude.
sea soul st u d i o by Sarah Woodward Sarah Woodward from Sea Soul Studio hand crafts a gorgeous collection of bespoke porcelain jewellery, that is influenced strongly by the Southern Beaches of Tasmania where she lives. Along with a lovely coastal vibe, Sarah’s pieces are gorgeously individual, just a little bit quirky and eminently wearable. Personally, we happen to be extra fond of the current blue in her collection – which Sarah describes as just like her collection of striped Cornish Ware. swoodward@internode.on.net facebook.com/sarahseasoulstudio
Favourite place for a Friday night drink / Saturday morning coffee? Catching up with city friends often happens at Preachers, relaxed enough to be able to hear each other talk (most of the time!) As an ex-chef, I’m often twitchy on the weekends and have friends over for eggs benedict and piccolo lattes. If we are out and about, we love Tricycle CafÊ or Jackman and McRoss.

THE LITTLE WREN by Helen Barnard Helen Barnard, is a young natural history illustrator who bravely moved to Tasmania from England in 2011. She has since been completely captivated by the unique flora and fauna of the island and has produced a range of watercolour paintings, cards and other lovely products, under the name ‘the little wren’. Her obvious love of anything birdy and her self confessed obsessive attention to detail in her artwork has resulted in a body of work that is incredibly endearing, but shows a very serious talent. helen@thelittlewren.com thelittlewren.com
What can WE expect to see you exhibiting? Keeping it simple with my full range of bird cards and stationery, beautiful prints and some original artwork. Gift boxes for the perfect little birdy present and I hope to have some ceramic delights as a special treat for the market customers, combining two of my favourite things, a lovely cuppa and birds!

Suze van der Beek has translated her passion for photography into small wearable artworks - namely a strikingly beautiful range of photographic brooches and pendants. Favourite Tasmanian designer / maker + why? Tasmania has so many fantastic designers and makers; I had to really think about this one. Some of them I respect for the products, some of them I admire for their intentions, and many others are gorgeous, amazing people! I would have to say Pixe Link would be favourite. I have several of her garments in my wardrobe, she is a wonderful lady with bravery and passion to support other makers and designers in Tasmania by opening her own store, Spacebar Gallery, and she is a self taught designer, business woman and general wonder-lady!
E M I LY SNADDEN DESIGN by Emily Snadden Emily Snadden is a manufacturing jeweller who produces handmade, unique, contemporary pieces. Her incredible body of work (with which she has won her fair share of awards!) is developed in response to the flora and the architecture of Tasmania; recurring references include twigs, seeds and organic form contrasted against geometric shapes and clean lines. Jaw droppingly beautiful pieces and awe – inspiring talent. info@emilysnadden.com emilysnadden.com
What does your work / studio space look like? I currently share my studio space/workshop – it is often chaotic and sometimes messy. We have a lovely view of Salamanca place/courtyard and I am often distracted by the beautiful tree just outside the window.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be + why? We moved from Sydney to Tassie for the lifestyle; friendly people who care about each other and stunning natural beauty. We would get on the plane back to Sydney and feel like we were leaving home. There was a real sadness in leaving. So now we just visit Sydney and are glad to leave it behind. Sorry Sydney‌ Why would you want to live anywhere but here?

S P OO N S A VV Y by Angela Lowe Angela Lowe is an op shopping, tip foraging, secondhand scouring, radically resourceful, spoon loving lady. Under her Spoon Savvy label she produces an enchanting and hugely popular collection of jewellery and more recently home wares, made from cutlery (spoons in particular!) She delights in the reinvention of the object and its function, we delight in the fact that her jewels are super cool, eco – friendly and resurrected from discarded cutlery! spoonsavvy@hotmail.com spoonsavvy.com
What does your work / studio space look like? My workshop was lost to the fires that swept through Murdunna in January this year. I didn’t realize how much cutlery I had collected over the years until I saw it in piles amongst the remains and the ashes. I am now reinventing my creative space in a big 40 foot shipping container. My vision for this space is chic workshop and design studio with jewelers bench and lots of beautiful old and new tools, surrounded by inspiring objects and treasures. I think the operative word here is ‘big’ – something big has happened, we’re taking that, thinking big and rising up.

B A R I S TA S I S TA by Simone Daly We all know coffee makes the world go round, and at the market we’re lucky enough to have a brilliant barista service to make it go round that little bit better! Simone Daly, the BaristaSista herself, along with her daughter Chelsea provide seriously good coffee, tea, chai, hot chocolates, or anything in between! J A K O B’ S PA N T R Y by Kathryn Clifford We all know how spoiled we are in Tasmania with quality produce and seasonal treats. Kathryn Clifford has certainly managed to track down the best quality ingredients and seasonal local produce to use in her range of pastries, cakes, tarts and biscuits. We love their old fashioned style of baking and can’t get enough of their mouth watering handmade pastry. Plus, we like supporting a small family business, and intend to continue to do so, by sampling many, many pieces of their new brand new Jaffa Cake!

the who, the what & the why . . the market is a boutique art + design event, showcasing independent Tasmanian designers, makers and producers. It is held six times a year in the intriguing Masonic Temple, Hobart. Since its inception in 2009, it has become widely known for its exciting line up of exclusively local labels, along with its firm focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. With an impressive collection of exhibitors from a wide range of disciplines, visitors to the market can expect to see established fashion illustrators sitting alongside small scale producers of bespoke ceramics. A very particular approach to stallholder selection ensures that while exhibitors are vastly different in almost every way, they all have a common thread; creative talent, a demonstrated integrity in their business ethos and original thought in their design process.
the market is carefully curated by Shannon Robertson & Holly Webber, who are committed in their mission to unearthing and showing off Tasmania’s veritable web of undiscovered talent, world-class products and the intriguing stories and inspiration behind the commercial reality of small scale designers and makers. Alongside co-curating the market, Holly & Shannon both run successful small businesses of their own and bring to the market their skills in graphic design, journalism, advertising, creative writing and marketing. This helps them to provide exhibitors with a platform, valuable exposure and a reach for their products that extends beyond market day.
Shannon Robertson
Shannon Robertson is the whimsical designer behind the fashion accessories label, Whatever Heather. Launched in the Summer of 2008 Whatever Heather is a confident, fiercely pretty label full of the eclectic and the intriguing, and well known for its decidedly quirky outlook and daintily dishevelled aesthetic. Shannon produces bespoke seasonal ranges for stockists nation – wide, and a coveted Heather Forever Collection, available from her online shop. Whatever Heather is created from her attic studio in Battery Point, which is overflowing with all manner of Shannon type inspiration...oversized flowers, swans, chandeliers, battered crowns, and sometimes (if he fancies) her imperious but seriously beloved ginger cat Raspberry can be found perched on her desk, playing muse.
Holly Webber
Holly Webber is a freelance graphic designer and art director. A graduate of the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Graphic Design and Photography 2004), she has spent the past eight years building up her design practice, delivering creative solutions for clients on a State and National level. Alongside this, under her self-titled label, Holly has developed a range of handmade products, which draw on her design and photographic abilities. These works can be found in retail boutiques and online stores both locally and nationally. Holly is a keen supporter of the graphic design and advertising industry, volunteering her time as the current elected State President of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA).
Alongside these creative pursuits, Shannon also works in an old fashioned antique shop on Hobart’s Waterfront.
