Favourite Tasmanian designer / maker + why? Allanah Hill is one of my muse’s, with her gaining the title ‘Queen of Romance.’ She is originally from a little town in the North West of Tassie, and if a little girl from Tassie can make it in the big world of fashion, so can I! I love girlie and Allanah has plenty of this with her flare, passion for flowers, colour and romance. She manages to embody all things feminine in her clothing designs. She has worked her whole life to create unique cuts with a whimsical style, thus building her an iconic fashion empire. This is something I will also be working towards for the future.

M ABEL by Dave Boyer Mabel designer Dave Boyer began his creative process with some dirty old ply and acrylic, a handheld drill and an upside-down floor sander. While that might not appeal to some, this refreshingly organic/nitty gritty approach, combined with a sincere and ethical design process and some interesting aesthetical influences has resulted in a range of jewels that are totally original and supremely cool. Featuring stacked layers of timber pared with fun pops of coloured acrylic, Mabel wares are a perfect example of good Australian design…an awesome product with a feel good ethos behind it.

sm i t h + p u r to n by Daniel Purton & Zoe Smith With a combined background in illustration, graphic design, furniture design and printmaking, Daniel and Zoe felt compelled to find a way of living a life of creative productivity, with an emphasis on long-lasting products produced in as sustainable a manner as possible. Their textile range is produced on the premise that it allows them to indulge their urge to play with ideas and solve design challenges. Work should be fun. Amen to that! info@smithandpurton.com.au smithandpurton.com.au

What does your work / studio space look like? We have two production hubs: the brain and the brawn. ‘Brain’ is the study/office, where we draw, manipulate, and design. Post-it notes, tracing paper, light-box, scanner, ink and brushes, computer, sewing machine, pinboard stuffed with jots and sketches, current orders and inspiration pin-ups. ‘Brawn’ is the printing studio, where the ideas emerge onto textiles with a magical flourish of a squeegee.

8-bitt y by Luke Morgan In terms of product design, 2013 will be bold, bright and a little gory for 8-bitty creator Luke Morgan. A local graphic designer and artist, Luke grew up in the 80s and 90s with Stormtroopers, Battlecat, Ninja Turtles, Batman, Indiana Jones, Soundwave, Sub-zero and of course video games. Drawing on these well rounded influences, he designs and produces radical video game clothing which essentially chews up cool stuff from the 80s and 90s and spits them out as giant pixels onto t-shirts.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be + why? We moved from Sydney to Tassie for the lifestyle; friendly people who care about each other and stunning natural beauty. We would get on the plane back to Sydney and feel like we were leaving home. There was a real sadness in leaving. So now we just visit Sydney and are glad to leave it behind. Sorry Sydney‌ Why would you want to live anywhere but here?

M ARLE Y & LO C K Y ER by Ness Lockyer Ness Lockyer sources beautiful vintage linens from literally all over the world to incorporate into her Marley & Lockyer label. Along with these ever so special textiles she also creates gorgeous hand worked clay homewares and jewellery. What does your work / studio space look like? Last June, I moved into an unused living room in our C1883 home and it is so much better than ‘the sweatshop’. The new ‘studio’, is 5m x 5.5m and is perfect...11 foot ceilings, white wide plank floorboards, white walls and an original plank ceiling left in it’s original wood state. There is a fireplace with a slow combustion wood fire and a huge old Coogans dining table that I have re-purposed as a work table. I now have a dedicated office space in here too, instead of trying to do it all on the one table. This room is full of light and I constantly feel inspired when I am in here...the beloved kiln is in our backyard. All of the work for Marley & Lockyer is done from here...by me and my hands.

THE LITTLE W REN by Helen Barnard Helen Barnard, is a young natural history illustrator who bravely moved to Tasmania from England in 2011. She has since been completely captivated by the unique flora and fauna of the island and has produced a range of watercolour paintings, cards and other lovely products, under the name ‘the little wren’. Her obvious love of anything birdy and her self confessed obsessive attention to detail in her artwork has resulted in a body of work that is incredibly endearing, but shows a very serious talent. helen@thelittlewren.com thelittlewren.com

What can WE expect to see you exhibiting? Keeping it simple with my full range of bird cards and stationery, beautiful prints and some original artwork. Gift boxes for the perfect little birdy present and I hope to have some ceramic delights as a special treat for the market customers, combining two of my favourite things, a lovely cuppa and birds!

What does your work / studio space look like? My studio space is what you'd call a dumping ground, there's an old piano, surfboard, tins of house paint and loads of boxes filled with unwanted toys. There are however essentials such as a huge 3 metre length table for laying and cutting fabric, my trusty sewing machines and my ever faithful t-shirt carousel for screen printing. Messy or clean, it still is my favourite room.

Fellow nail polish devotee and clever jewellery designer Amy Willows, has created a collection of fun and dynamic jewels using nail polish as the hero. Making the most of the current beauty and breadth in the variety of nail polish finishes, (think glitter, duochrome, crackle, neon, creme, jelly) Amy uses various manicure techniques to layer the polish under glass. Willow Street pieces are one of a kind and each piece is numbered – customers can hop onto Amy’s blog to discover the exact nail polish and technique used to create their piece.

Describe your work / studio space. My workspace, living in a tiny studio apartment with my partner, usually ends up being the coffee table! I have a craft desk set up which I work on, and a whole drawer full of nail polishes which serve as materials and inspiration. I work full time and spend most evenings packing and shipping orders, updating my blog with new pieces, browsing online for new nail polishes and techniques or creating jewellery pieces. I find it both relaxing and recharging to experiment and create, and the beauty of using nail polish and glass is that if something does not turn out as well as planned I can simply use acetone to wipe away the polish and begin again with the glass. I find this give me the freedom to experiment with no pressure which leads to some wonderful outcomes!

the who, the what & the why . . the market is a boutique art + design event, showcasing independent Tasmanian designers, makers and producers. It is held six times a year in the intriguing Masonic Temple, Hobart. Since its inception in 2009, it has become widely known for its exciting line up of exclusively local labels, along with its firm focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. With an impressive collection of exhibitors from a wide range of disciplines, visitors to the market can expect to see established fashion illustrators sitting alongside small scale producers of bespoke ceramics. A very particular approach to stallholder selection ensures that while exhibitors are vastly different in almost every way, they all have a common thread; creative talent, a demonstrated integrity in their business ethos and original thought in their design process.

the market is carefully curated by Shannon Robertson & Holly Webber, who are committed in their mission to unearthing and showing off Tasmania’s veritable web of undiscovered talent, world-class products and the intriguing stories and inspiration behind the commercial reality of small scale designers and makers. Alongside co-curating the market, Holly & Shannon both run successful small businesses of their own and bring to the market their skills in graphic design, journalism, advertising, creative writing and marketing.
