We’re hankering after ... Some new bling, of the authentic, handmade and incredibly beautiful kind... hello Little Lari! And some stunning + heartfelt ceramics from Sally Cassandra.

Ones to watch ... Sarah Bishop, who in between playing with tulle and her beloved dog Molly, has been creating some new works ready for the market! And 8-Bitty - always fun (and a dash scary) to see some zombie gore in action.

lo ca l lov e this month we enjoyed...

To eat Chocolate churros (always a winner but these were EXTRA good) from Smolt at the Dark Mofo Winter Feast.

To reflect on Five years of running the market - its been a crazy and rewarding ride - and given us a massive appreciation for our local creatives and the heart and soul that goes into their work.

To do Rugging up and striding the Wintry streets (or forest tracks) of Hobart together - the best way to see a city, especially your own!

Love, y xo l l o H & n o n Shan

Sam Lyne Sam has been working as a freelance illustrator and designer in Hobart since graduating from the UTAS School of Art in 2010. A childhood love for the intricate pictures in storybooks fuelled much of his passion for illustration, and he now happily spends hours cramming as much detail as he can into a single piece. You might catch a glimpse of Sam working in leafy parks around Hobart, doodling incessantly in his sketchbooks and breaking tiny mechanical pencil leads as he gets down to the nitty-gritty.

Luke Morgan In terms of product design, 2014 will be bold, bright and a little gory for 8-bitty creator Luke Morgan. A local graphic designer and artist, Luke grew up in the 80s and 90s with Stormtroopers, Battlecat, Ninja Turtles, Batman, Indiana Jones, Soundwave, Sub-zero and of course video games. Drawing on these well rounded influences, he designs and produces radical video game clothing which essentially chews up cool stuff from the 80s and 90s and spits them out as giant pixels onto t-shirts.

t h e w h o, the what & t h e w h y. . . the market is a boutique art + design event, showcasing independent Tasmanian designers, makers and producers. It is held six times a year in the intriguing Masonic Temple, Hobart. Since its inception in 2009, it has become widely known for its exciting line up of exclusively local labels, along with its firm focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. With an impressive collection of exhibitors from a wide range of disciplines, visitors to the market can expect to see established fashion illustrators sitting alongside small scale producers of bespoke ceramics. A very particular approach to stallholder selection ensures that while exhibitors are vastly different in almost every way, they all have a common thread; creative talent, a demonstrated integrity in their business ethos and original thought in their design process.

the market is carefully curated by Shannon Robertson & Holly Webber, who are committed in their mission to unearthing and showing off Tasmania’s veritable web of undiscovered talent, world-class products and the intriguing stories and inspiration behind the commercial reality of small scale designers and makers. In addition to their regular market events, the girls have recently hosted pop - up events at the Cancer Council Girls Day Out and at the Sustainable Living Festival. In 2013 they held Show & Tell, a forest-themed night exhibition of their stallholders, as part of the Festival of Voices programme. Alongside co-curating the market, Holly & Shannon both run successful small businesses of their own and bring to the market their skills in graphic design, journalism, advertising, creative writing and marketing. This helps them to provide exhibitors with a platform, valuable exposure and a reach for their products that extends beyond market day.
