EDITION 91 11th Sept 2020

The weekly newsletter for the Holyport College family

Welcome Back Message from the Head Master Following such a challenging few months, it has been an immense pleasure to welcome our school community back together. Our students have immersed themselves in their learning without a backward glance and it is amazing to see the joy in their faces as they get back into the rhythm of school life. My thanks go to our parents and carers for their support and trust in getting our students back to school and to the entire staff team who have been incredible in adapting to the necessary changes which have allowed our school to function in as close to a “normal manner as possible. My message to all students at the start of term was that, for each individual to succeed, the learning community which they are a part of must be successful. Communities in which every individual works hard, seizes opportunities and is kind to those around them will see an exponential benefit to the wellbeing and success of each individual within that community. We are already starting to see this paying dividends in our classrooms. It has been a particular pleasure to welcome so many local young people into Year 7. There will doubtless be challenges ahead this Autumn. We continue to work on ensuring lunch service is both safe and timely. Many schools have significantly reduced their catering offers this Autumn however we continue to offer the full range of options to our students however this has led to some delays in service at lunchtime and we are looking to resolve these over the coming week. Due to the changes in our admissions policy. We will be formally consulting on these changes this Autumn and would appreciate the support of our community when this consultation takes place. As communicated to parents before the Summer, we will be reviewing the current shortened school day next Friday, 18th September. We very much wish to revert to a 17:00 finish for all students as soon as it is safe to do so however, if we risk closer contact between year groups within the co-curriculum (as is normally the case) it is possible many more students would have to isolate for two weeks in the event of someone testing positive for COVID and this is obviously something which we are all keen to avoid. We are looking at a range of options and will communicate an update next Friday. I hope that you and all those dear to you are staying safe and well and enjoying the sense of normality that the return to school has brought to us all: we could not be happier to be back! @holyportcollege

FROM THE COLLEGE

DIXIT 11th Sept 2020

Millie’s Rules Mr McCarey’s six year old daughter, Millie, has written the rules which all students are required to follow in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We reckon that if a six year old can come up with them, our students should be able to follow them!

FROM THE CLASSROOM

COVID Inspires Innovation With a number of students unable to attend the College due to quarantine or selfisolation requirements, the teaching staff have been getting to grips with simultaneous in person and online learning allowing students all over the world to join their lessons live if they are unable to be there due to the global pandemic. We can’t hold our usual house or whole school assemblies as we need to keep our year groups apart but we’ve also had great fun joining the tutor groups together remotely for these!

FROM THE SIXTH FORM

DIXIT 11th Sept 2020

Well done Year 13! The majority of our students head off to Russell Group Universities! During all of the A Level results turmoil and the will they/won’t they accept teacher assessed grades question, one thing remained positive throughout the whole experience and that was our students’ university places. Not only did both our Oxford University offer holders get the results they needed to get into the world’s number 1 university but we managed two Medics and a Dentist too. That’s not to take away from the many students who got into do Law and Engineering as well as other competitive courses at the UK’s top universities. Over 50% of our university students will be starting at a Russell Group University and many are on courses that are in the top 25 in the country for that specific course. This sort of result in our second year of A Levels is a truly remarkable feat. The current Upper Sixth are set to be equally, if not better placed to achieve some great university destinations and about a 25% of the cohort are going for Oxbridge or early entry courses. A big thanks you to all of the Sixth Form team for all their support in making this happen. Mr Hardee

FROM THE MUSIC ROOMS

DIXIT 11th Sept 2020

Music Department News Private instrumental and singing lessons start on Monday and students must check the Music department noticeboard to find out their day / room and time. Please note - Mrs Sinclair’s flute students must attend in the Conference Room - top of Winton, above Mr Alford’s office. Mrs Sinclair is teaching her lessons remotely from home but a laptop is set up in the Conference Room ready for you to log on to Meets with her. Healthy and Safety for Private Music Lessons A number of measures are necessary to enable all private music lessons to take place in individual rooms and we would be very grateful if parents could please take a moment to explain these to their child for the safety of all. A perspex screen has been placed in each teaching room to provide some protection. All students must bring a mouth mask to their music lesson which they will be keeping on if they are a strings, guitars, drums, piano or singing student. Teachers will not be able to teach your child if they do not have a mask and the cost of this lesson will not be refunded. Wind and brass players will need to remove them to be able to play but should wear them during periods of not playing. Students must sanitise their hands at the start and end of each lesson. Piano students will have the piano sanitised for them between students and all other instrumentalists must not share instruments. Windows will stay open throughout as will any external doors, so students should wrap up warm if they feel the cold! Students attending remote lessons with Mrs Sinclair in the Conference Room must still sanitise their hands. Teachers will demonstrate from a distance of 1-2 metres for non wind instruments and 2-5 metres for wind based instruments. Thank you for your support with this. Mrs Bryant
