Saving Water Here’s a few tips to help you save water, energy and money off your bills especially if you have a water meter. • Only boil what you need • Wash full loads of washing or use economy setting • Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth • Use a watering can rather than a hose

• Keep your showers to around 4 mins. • Keep a cold jug of water in the fridge so you don’t have to run the tap until it goes cold You can get a free water saving pack at www.yorkshirewater.com. You can also find information about walks around Yorkshire’s stunning reservoirs where you can enjoy a stroll and get some fresh air and the really good news is that it’s completely free for everyone to enjoy.

Times and days of operation, and destinations served, vary according to which area of York you live in.

All buses are specially adapted for wheelchair users and for those that have difficulty walking. Destinations served: • York city centre • Askham Bar / Clifton Moor (dependent upon which area you live in) • Monks Cross and Vangarde shopping parks • Morrisons (Foss Islands) • Sainsbury’s (Foss Bank). Dementia Awareness Week 2017 This year’s Dementia Awareness Week will run from 14th to 20th May 2017. The Alzheimer’s Society is aiming to raise awareness with as many people as possible in the York area. Their Roadshow Bus will be returning to the

York City Centre and the Forget-meNot Café will be open to everyone with music, singing and refreshments. So pop along and have a chat with some of the lovely volunteers and get some free advice if you feel you need it.

Malnutrition Self-Screening Questionnaire If you, a member of your family or someone you care for are worried about unexplained weight loss or are experiencing a loss of appetite/poor appetite and not eating well then there is a self-screening website which will help you assess weight loss. It will then be important to contact the GP to make sure that any underlying reasons for weight loss are being treated. During illness, we often don’t feel like eating as much as usual and can lose weight unintentionally as a result. Maintaining weight or minimising weight loss when you’re unwell can help you cope with any treatment you might be having, keep up your strength to undertake everyday activities and help you recover more quickly. The screening questionnaire can be found at www. malnutritionselfscreening.org and you can find more information on malnutrition at www.nhs.uk.

Helping you to be independent Be Independent is York’s equipment and 24/7 response service provider. Be Independent has recently started working with 3rings to offer people in York and the surrounding areas a wider range of services to help people maintain their independence. If your friends and family worry about you living independently, 3rings might be the answer. Just plug a kettle, TV or almost any appliance into a 3rings plug and tell

us which part of the day your family would like reassurance that you’re OK. This could be checking that you make your morning cup of tea between 5am and 9am. If everything is OK then all the family receive a message directly to their smart phone, tablet or computer or are alerted if no activity has been detected. For more information about 3rings and Be Independent’s other services please call 01904 645000 or visit www.beindependent.org.uk

Say hello to our new CAREGivers Karen and Rowena. Both ladies joined us for our induction training in April.

Pimp My Zimmer Older people have been personalising their walking frames as part of a “Pimp My Zimmer” campaign. Residents at care homes have been inspired to transform their grey and uninspiring walking aids into glamorous works of art by adorning them with bespoke knitted covers, football scarves, tinsel and even fresh flowers. It has since gone on to reduce falls by up to 60 per cent and prove invaluable as the brighter colours make frames more recognisable to people with cognitive impairments such as dementia.
