Five go on an induction training course

We held a very successful induction training at the end of April, with five new inductees now fully trained and raring to get working! Some great images here of the Inductees and some of the office staff in action as well. Remember if you know of anyone who would be interested in a CAREGiver position, get them to get in touch with Karen as we still have our £250 referral fee available and places available on our next induction training course.

We are pleased to announce that we will now be producing our Newsletter – The Elder, on a monthly basis. Keep an eye out! The Elder will be sent out in the post to clients each month and emailed to their family members as well. If you have any information or stories you have seen in the news, locally or with your clients, please let us know and we may use this in that month’s The Elder!

PEAQ week will be running from Monday 6th until Friday 10th June. During the week we will be holding various activities at the office such as coffee mornings, Dementia Workshops, CAREGiver meetings etc. This is a great opportunity for you to come in and give us your feedback on working for HISC York. As well as the chance of winning the national prize we will be having our own York & Ryedale participation raffle, watch out for further details!

Home Instead’s new scarecrow recruit For the first time Home Instead entered the Haxby & Wigginton Scarecrow Festival which is run by Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church and annually raises over £4,500 for St Leonards Hospice and smaller local charities. The Home Instead Superhero

themed scarecrow was designed by Karen Skouras our Recruiter with help from her Dad Peter. Karen has entered the event previously and said that Home Instead superhero CAREGivers were her inspiration this year although her scarecrow does bare a remarkable likeness to Andy

our Head of CAREGiver Experience who she shares an office with! It’s hoped that our scarecrow could go on a tour as York now has a number of Scarecrow Festivals so watch out for an appearance at a trail near you.

Dementia Week – Helping to create dementia friendly communities Dementia week will be running from the 15th to the 21st May this year. During the week we will be running two Dementia Friends workshops at the office. On the 17th May we will run an exclusive session for our HISC staff from 1330-1430 and on the 19th May we are holding an open session for the public from 1.30pm to 2.30pm at the office. If you know of anybody who would like to come to our free open public session get them to call the office to confirm their place. Learn a little more about dementia and some of the small ways you can help those living with dementia, and you can make a huge difference in your community.

Home Instead celebrates talented CAREGiver At Home Instead Senior Care we love to celebrate the talent and success of CAREGivers at every opportunity. Jackie Midgley has been working as a CAREGiver for Home Instead for over a year and has also been a thriving artist for 15 years and has recently been chosen to exhibit her art work for the annual York Open Studios event. The event aims to raise awareness of artists within a ten mile radius of York. The chosen artists open their studios for two weekends, giving the public the opportunity to visit exhibitions and buy art directly from the makers. Jackie explained, “I have always enjoyed painting since being a young child and I won my first art competition at the age of 12. I studied for a degree in painting in 2000, but family life has always been my priority. Now my children are grown up, I’ve decided to get back into painting and that’s why I applied for York Open Studios event.” Luke Norbury, owner of Home Instead York and Ryedale commented, “Jackie is a credit to our team, she has a great relationship with all of her clients and is a pleasure to be around. We are so proud

Change of annual leave Over the last week or so, you should have all received a letter regarding the changes we have been forced to make regarding annual leave. We have decided to resort back to the original annual leave year of 1st April to 31st March, rather than basing it around your birthdays. We have tried to be lenient with regards to carrying annual leave over, so we hope you are all satisfied with the change. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone, but we hope this change will make life a lot easier going forward.

Luke Norbury, owner of Home Instead York & Ryedale with Jackie Midgley, CAREGiver and talented artist. that she has made it through to showcase her artwork. Not only is she a caring and compassionate person, she is also a fantastic artist, and we’re encouraging her to introduce art to clients here at Home Instead.” Many of our team come from diverse backgrounds, with lots of life skills and we would love to hear about how you introduce these to your work with clients.

Congratulations to Charlene (left) and the following CAREGivers who this month completed 1 years service: Barbara Fella – 1 year Gabby Rudge-Cox – 1 Year Deborah Strike – 1 Year Also a big well done and huge thank you to Deborah Newlove, who said the following after completing seven fantastic years of service: “It has been a very positive experience growing with Home Instead in York over seven years. “Often demanding but always rewarding, Home Instead have always helped me to go the extra mile to ensure people have a positive experience of care in their own home. “As an employer Home Instead have been generous in their appreciation of our hard work with novel reward schemes, but more importantly, they always report clients’ & client’s families’ comments back to you. which means a great deal”.

CAREGivers attend end of life training Carol our Care Manager and CAREGivers, Sheila, Karen, Gail, Rebecca, Annette, Ruth and Helen, attended the end of life training at St Leonards Hospice. The training was a huge success, and highlighted the fantastic job which St Leonard’s do. They also provided some great information on how to deal with end of life clients. We are booked in for a second course on 22nd of June, so those of you booked onto this can really look forward.

The St Leonard’s Hospice, provided the team with this thought provoking poem:

Listening

Listen! All I asked, was that you listen, Not talk or do – just hear me.

When I ask you to listen to me And you start giving advice, You have not done as I asked. When I ask you to listen to me And you begin to tell me I shouldn’t feel that way, You are trampling on my feelings When I ask you to listen to me,

And you feel you have to do something to solve my problems You have failed me, strange as that may seem.

When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, You contribute to my fear and weakness. But, when you accept as a simple fact that I do feel what I feel, No matter how irrational, Then I quit trying to convince you And get back to the business of understanding Whats behind this irrational feeling. And when that’s clear, the answers are obvious And don’t need advice. Irrational feelings make sense when we understand Whats behind them. So please listen and just hear me. And, if you want to talk, Wait a minute for your turn; And I’ll listen to you. Author Unknown
