Renovations That Increase

THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME Updating your home is not only exciting but also a good idea, especially when selling is on the cards in the future. There are a few things that home buyers and real estate agents love to see when they are on the lookout for new homes. Here are our suggestions on what types of renovations can increase the value of your home.

Kitchen Appeal An outdated kitchen can easily bring down the value of your home. A fully functional and newly renovated kitchen, on the other hand, will add value to your home. However, there is a fine balance between the cost of the renovation versus the value it will add, so carefully consider the costs. A big project like a kitchen revamp is not something you want to lose any money on.

Modern Bathrooms There is an old adage that claims that kitchens and bathrooms sell houses and it is definitely true. One of the first things people look at before buying a home is the condition of the bathrooms. Old bathrooms with outdated tiles can really put potential buyers off. If you have the space consider adding an extra bathroom. If not, update the fittings, fixtures and amenities.

Epic Braai Areas The way we work has changed significantly. More people are working from home and a space dedicated to this has become a huge consideration. Options to consider here are building alterations of adding another room or converting some wasted space into an office nook. Converting a spare bedroom is not ideal but could be an option too.

Great Gardens A beautiful garden can sell any type of home. If a garden is well kept and creatively designed, you can be guaranteed that it will increase the value of your home. Well kept lawns, a clean pool and cosy patio all add to the overall look. Whether you are selling or not, a home with stylish curb appeal is what every homeowner strives for.

South Africans love their shisanyama, making outside entertainment spaces and epic braai areas are important to us all. Well designed and multifunctional outdoor entertainment areas will add great value to your home.

Not in the position to tackle big projects? Here are 3 quick fixes. Clean - make it spotless! People will value that now more than ever before. Paint - one of the most effective projects visually and financially. Fix -fix everything that is broken.

VERMONT SALES TELLS US HOW

Serial DIYers never get bored. There is always something to do, in fact, their problem is the opposite - not enough time to finish all those WIPs (work in progress). One of the serious side effects of serial DIYers is obsessivecompulsive tool acquisition. It starts off with the basic stuff, a hammer, a circular saw, an edge bander. But before you know it you’ve accumulated equipment valued the same as the annual GDP of a Caribbean island. Not to mention all the other “essential” materials such as wood, screws and every sort of fitting.

“As a kid I loved tools and in those days tools were mostly hand tools, and most fathers kept them locked up and rightly so. I do the same myself today,” says Digby Wesson from Vermont Sales. Another side effect of Serial DIYing is, let’s call a spade a spade, is hoarding. “I also don’t throw anything away, be it wood, steel or anything that could possibly be used, or made into something,” says Digby. Our DIYers biggest regret during this time is that they did not stockpile more before this lockdown! If these words speak to you, then you are in for a treat. Vermont Sales’ brand Kreg runs an informative and interactive portal with loads of FREE content and tips - buildsomething.com. This site literally has everything you need for small and more ambitious projects. A DIYer’s Dream! It includes: • complete comprehensive plans • all the instructions, sizes and tools required • your choice of difficulty - choose between simple, easy, expert

Our favourite project for APRIL This 5-in-1 Kids Art Station. It Includes a dry erase board, magnetic chalkboard, art paper roll holder, kids art display, and an art supply organiser. It is easy to build and will provide hours of fun! Find the full plans here:

Kids Art Station LOCKDOWN DIY TIPS DIY and lockdown time will be gone in no time at all. Every DIYer and homeowner has a list of things to do, however, there are normally 2 lists. yours and mine. Tip: Doing a couple of their DIY projects will keep you out of harm’s way, and then you are free to do yours!

IS YOUR HOME TELLING YOUR STORY?

House Arrest and the Psychology of HOME

lifestyle

The word home is a powerful one. It conjures different images tinted by our unique perspectives, culture and memory. It means something different to each of us and there are certain emotions it will evoke for most like; family, happiness, comfort, pride, safety and love. And most recently, a nationwide lockdown. House arrest is not something any of us ever thought would be our reality but here we are. Spending so much time at home can be compared to a new relationship. At first, it is all love and cuddles - we cannot get enough of each

other. Then reality sets in and we notice all the flaws. Next follows the fix-it phase and eventually acceptance and deep love. As fixing homes is what we do best, let’s explore the fix-it phase. As with everything in life knowing where we’ve been is needed to know where we’re going.

Caves to Cameras Homes have evolved from a primal shelter protecting us from the elements and predators, to an extension of our ego. Today our homes not only need to serve all those primal needs but it should also be Instagram ready.

Take a walk through your home. Pretend that you are a visitor and take the time to view it from a stranger’s perspective. What story is your house telling about the people who live there?

Sanctuary or Sanatorium? When we talk about turning your home into your sanctuary it is not necessarily having a zen spa experience every time you walk through the front door. It is creating a stage for the movie that is your life, a place where you are yourself. You can’t be the star in someone else’s life movie. You cannot live on someone else’s movie set, make it your own!

The Upside of Lockdown Make the most of this time. Fall in love with your home again and turn it into your sanctuary - a place of pride. When we can connect with those outside our homes again, we want to invite them back inside. For more inspiration on how to turn your home into your sanctuary visit HOMEMAKERSsonline

TAKE A WORLD TOUR IN YOUR HOME

APRIL 2020 • VAAL TRIANGLE HOMEMAKERS

The Grand Tour: Home Edition

The concept of a Grand Tour comes from the 1800s when young, upper-class Englishmen would go on an extended tour of continental Europe to attain new skills, improve themselves and become more cultured. Luckily these days, self-improvement is freely available and there is no need to go to Europe for a Grand Tour.

HERE’S OUR MAP TO TAKE A TOUR IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME DURING LOCKDOWN.

KITCHEN = ITALY Have an “Eat, Pray, Love” moment by making your favourite pasta and having a sit down dinner with everyone in your house. Add some Italian cafe music for added effect.

BATHROOM = BUDAPEST Get out your pajamas and turn your bathroom into a relaxing spa retreat where you can enjoy some peace and quiet. Be inspired by the spa capital of the world and enjoy a rejuvenating soak in the bath, indulge in a DIY body scrub or face mask and make some time for yourself.

TV ROOM = FRANCE

Bring the essence of the Cannes Film Festival home by making some popcorn and watching your favourite movie or movies.

PATIO / BALCONY / GARDEN = ENGLAND Bring out your “for visitors only” dinnerware, make some tea, bake some scones and enjoy an English High Tea outside. Hopefully it doesn’t rain.

BEDROOM = SCANDINAVIA Bring some Scandinavian minimalist style into your home by organising your room. Declutter your cupboards, reorganise your side tables and make sure everything has (and keeps) its place.

HEATING YOUR HOME APRIL 2020 • VAAL TRIANGLE HOMEMAKERS

It’s that time of year where you need to start thinking about how you will be heating your home in winter. With so many options available, we want to give you the lowdown on what we think is best for our South African winters. Whether you choose a traditional fireplace or underfloor heating, choosing the right option for your home and budget is important. Below we look at a few popular ways that South Africans are using to heat their homes.

Fireplaces

Radiators and Towel Rails

Fireplaces are probably the most classic way to heat your home. Fireplaces come in all shapes and sizes making it convenient to choose the right style for your home. From wood-burning fireplaces and enclosed fireplaces to electric fireplaces and ventless built-in fireplaces, it is important to decide what suits your lifestyle and family environment best.

Radiators might seem old-fashioned but they are a surefire way to heat your home. Today, radiators are designed with aesthetics and the environment in mind. Towel rails are very popular as they are known to heat bathrooms effectively. These heat exchangers work by drawing cool air in at the bottom and warming the air as it passes over the radiator fins. It then discharges the heated air at the top.

Underfloor Heating

Solar Water Heating

Underfloor heating is known to distribute heat more evenly than any other heating system. It has a lower temperature than radiators making it more efficient and eco-friendly. This can also save you costs in the long run. Also known as radiant heating, you get two types of underfloor heating. Both electric and water-based systems supply heat from the floor up. Underfloor heating is basically maintenancefree making it a popular choice for homeowners.

We know that sustainability is huge at the moment and that incorporating eco-friendly elements into your home, significantly increases the value of it. Solar water heating is becoming very popular as it omits the use of your home geyser to heat your water. A solar water heater uses the sun to heat water that then flows through water pipes that supply hot water to your home.

Find a heating specialist to get your home warm and cosy just before the cold winter strikes right here in HOMEMAKERS.

The UPSIDE to the lockdown The upside to the lockdown is that you finally have time to do all the things you have been meaning to do but just haven’t got around to. In between binge watching, catching up on your home to do list and walking to the fridge to stare into it aimlessly to pass the time, why not use this time to upskill yourself?

Here are our suggestions:

lifestyle

Excer-WHAT?

20

APRIL 2020 • VAAL TRIANGLE HOMEMAKERS

The dreaded word EXERCISE. Some may feel inspired to try it all while the rest of us need a bit of a nudge to get off the couch. There is no shortage of online videos and exercise programmes to get you moving. We’re not going to delve into that but would rather share a few of our ideas to get a rosy tint on those cheeks.

UR O F O W E F A E R A E R E H IDEAS FAMILY-INSPIRED ED TO GET YOU START

EXCER-LAWN Don't let your lawn have a holiday! Make sure you schedule its weekly mow. Want to know how you will burn those extra calories? Well, guess who is mowing the lawn? You. Pushing the extra weight is a great addition to a boring walk and you cover quite some ground walking up and down for a while.

EXCER-CARWASH We loved these workout inspired videos

EXCER-WHAT.indd 1

Share yours with us on our Facebook page

How about washing your car with a really small sponge? Sounds like fun right?! This will give you a good “car wash” workout. The best part is that you can get the last bit of a tan in before winter, and your car will be sparkling clean!

EXCER-GARDEN

EXCER-CRICKET

Taking an old dinner fork and pulling out all those unwanted weeds in and around the garden will also give you some incidental exercise and give your garden a spruce up.

Have your kids ever asked you to play cricket or tennis with them? The usual answer is “not right now, ask your brother or sister” because let’s get real, who’s got time for that when it is almost dinner time?!

This can be hard on your back so make sure you take a break with a good stretch every now and then. As always, do not forget your sunblock. The cooler weather does not protect you against harmful UV rays.

Now is a good time to probably say yes to the challenge. A fun game of backyard cricket with the family is really fun and the real rules do not always apply. Sometimes kids come up with their own rules. It is also usually played with a tennis ball and not a cricket ball, so the smaller kids can join in too.

Once the tin cans are cleaned and prepped, position them along the wood piece in the formation you feel suits your style. In this project, three cans were positioned along one side of the wood piece and the other side was used as a serviette holder by making use of another off-cut piece of wood 35cm x 6cm. This serviette holder is optional and more tin cans can be placed on the other side of the “T shape” wood structure.

Tape measure

Step 3: Glue the “T Shape” Wood Pieces and Secure

Use wood glue to glue the two wood pieces in a “T shape” formation, ensuring that there is enough space on one side for the 3 x tin cans and slightly less on the other side for the “serviette” holder and smaller scrap piece of wood. Wipe any excess wood glue with a damp rag, and allow for the glue to fully dry. Once dry, grab 2 x 30mm wood screws, driver bit and a cordless drill to secure the base wood piece of the “T shape” to the vertical piece from the underside. Be sure to countersink the holes to ensure the head of the wood screws sit flush along the bottom of the base wood piece.

Step 5: Secure Tin Cans to Wood

Grab the 16mm wood screws and a long screwdriver. Place a screw in the hole of the bottom of the tin can then continue to use the screwdriver to drive the small wood screw through the tin can hole into the wooden base. Hold the tin can in place while securing the wood screw tightly. Do this for all the cans.

Wood glue Step 6: Secure the Handle

Pencil Wood screws (4.0 x 30mm & 4.0 x 16mm) 5mm metal drill bit Handle (pull handle not a cabinet handle) Long screwdriver

Power Tools Needed:

Cordless hand power drill with driver Drill bit and 5mm metal drill bit

Step 2: Spray Paint

Prime the tin cans with a spray paint primer before applying colour. Choose a spray paint colour of your choice and spray the tin cans and wood in a well-ventilated area and make sure the surface is protected by either newspaper of a drop sheet. Use light horizontal and vertical strokes. Hold the spray can at least 30cm away from the object for even application. Be sure to allow each layer of spray paint to fully dry before applying another layer until the object is completely covered in the chosen spray paint colour. Allow spray paint to fully dry before continuing to the next step.

Step 4: Drill Holes in Each Tin Can

One drilled hole is needed at the base of each tin can for securing the cans to the “T Shape” wood structure. Insert a 5mm metal type drill bit into the chuck of the cordless power drill safely and securely. Use the correct safety measures, including gloves and safety eyewear. Make sure the surface you are drilling on is steady and protected. Hold the drill steady and at a 90-degree angle to the base of the tin can and with even pressure continue to drill through the metal. Do this to all of the cans.

Grab the small 16mm wood screws and screwdriver and find the centre mark of the vertical T shape piece of wood and secure the handle into the top of that section of wood. Once the handle is secure, the DIY cutlery holder is ready for use. Place the cutlery in each tin can and some serviettes in the other side holder. Keep this DIY project in the kitchen on display or transport it to the outdoor patio or braai area for use. This DIY project is even great to use in the home study for pens, pencils and other stationery.

KEEP YOUR HOME

virus f ree

Cleanliness is Godliness and that is more relevant now than ever before. COVID-19 has affected almost a million people around the world, with no slowing down unless we have something to do with it. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These can be inhaled by others or it can be left on surfaces where the virus can live for days. From levelling up your handwashing stations to cleaning routines for the family here are our top tips for keeping any virus at bay. You are going to have to level up your hand-washing stations. Make sure you have handwash or soap handy at all your taps in and around the house. It is recommended that we wash our hands for 20 seconds with any soap. It does not have to be anti-bacterial. Supply paper towels or hand towels that can be used to dry hands off with. Have a small laundry hamper for dirty towels or a bin for used paper towels. Make sure these handwashing stations are regularly cleaned. Keep alcohol wipes nearby to wipe faucets down regularly.

Focus on cleaning areas that have a lot of traffic like doorknobs and handles, TV remotes, light switches etc. Make sure there is hand sanitizer in these areas. If you are using hand sanitizer remember that it needs to have at least 60% alcohol to be effective against the Corona Virus. It’s a good idea to double up this time around, especially after visiting the shops or when having to go out of your house for other essentials. Use soap and water to clean surfaces. This removes dirt and germs but does not necessarily kill them. Preferably use a disinfectant after cleaning to kill germs.

It’s a good idea to start a new sanitizing routine for when you or family members get home. As soon as you get home remove your shoes at the door and outer clothing close to a laundry bin so that it can go straight to the wash. After that, it is a good idea to wash hands or even jump in the shower. The Corona Virus is said to attach itself to hair and clothes as well. Take care when carrying in your grocery bags. It is advised to remove as much packaging as you can. Wash your hands after handling anything from the grocery store.

As mentioned above, you can get COVID-19 from it being on your clothes. If you may have been exposed to the virus you should wash your clothes immediately. You should choose the hottest setting that your clothes can handle and if possible give it a tumble dry afterwards. The heat is a great friend when combatting any germ or virus. Once you have handled the laundry, it is also recommended that you follow your handwashing and sanitizing routine to ensure your hands are as clean as it can be.

Don’t forget to get the kids in on the daily routines. Let them

choose a handsoap they like, sing a favourite song or cite their favourite poem for twenty seconds and make sure the basin is easy to reach if you have littles.

CHRONICCORONA Isn’t it always wonderful that during uncertain times, there are always people who can crack a joke! We salute you jokers.

It helps us with a good laugh everyday. These are some of our favourite COVID-19 sayings during our official South African lockdown.

recipe

No more

What you need:

Pizza-night

You might find yourself in a difficult position when your 5-year-old son asks you: “No more pizza-night?”. This of course after fighting a woman in the grocery store for the last pack of frozen pizza bases. Keep in mind, I have just gotten my son to finally enjoy pizzas! After eating yoghurt and chocolate spread sandwiches for 3 years, the pizza night became his highlight! If you find yourself in the same position as me, know that I have found a simple solution. I have a basic pizza base recipe that is not only super easy to make, but you can have your 5-year-old make it himself. All you need is 4 basic ingredients. May I also mention that this is a healthy pizza-base option that contains no sugar!

Normal white bread dough does contain sugar, so you might even adapt your Friday-night ritual to this recipe post-Corona!

REPLACEMENT PRODUCTS: If you don’t have olive oil, you can replace it with normal cooking oil or even better canola oil. If you don’t have coconut oil replace with a double helping of the oil. If you don’t have olive or normal oil, but coconut oil - replace with a double helping of coconut oil

- 2 CUPS of normal flour or (even healthier) stoneground flour - 2 TABLESPOONS of coconut oil - 2 TABLESPOONS of olive oil - SALT to taste (I use a ¾ teaspoon of salt in this mix) - ¾ CUP of warm water (give or take)

Mix the whole lot together with washed hands and tadaa! Press it down nice and thin on a greased baking tray. I use a non-stick spray for this. Bake at 200 degrees Celcius for 5 to 7 minutes on its own. Take it out of the oven, add your tomato-based paste or whatever you prefer along with your toppings and cheese. Put it back into the oven for approximately another 10 minutes. Super easy. I doubled this recipe for my family of 4 and we had loads left.

If you don’t have either - give butter spread a try and let us know how it went!
