Iconic Chairs Worth Knowing About

wood, many other versions of injection moulded or recycled plastic now exist, but the simplicity and functionality of this chair means it will be sticking around for a while. Broad armrests and a sloped seat mean they are perfect for lazy afternoons indoors or outdoors, with your favourite drink at hand.

Beautiful places to put your bottom.

“Styles may come and go; good design is a language, not a style.” - Massimo Vignelli.

Consider a chair.

Since the dawn of time, humans have enjoyed sitting. While there was (and still is) a certain amount of ground and floor sitting done, there is even more proof of humans choosing to sit on or in something. Whether it’s a log, a stone, an anthill or a lap, we have been placing our bums on things for centuries. Sitting ON something is a necessary part of our everyday lives. But that doesn’t mean we give it much thought. As with everyday architecture, which we often only notice if it is done badly, we also only give a thought to where we are sitting if the chair is lacking in some way. A well designed, comfortable and easy to use sitting spot doesn’t often make it into our conversations, even though it is such a fundamental part of our daily lives.

Think about it - car/bus/train seats, office chairs, sofas in front of TV’s, dining room chairs. Living rooms, restaurants - so much of our lives is lived in the sitting position.

Let’s talk about famous chairs.

Adirondak

This staple of vacation houses in the USA was designed to provide stable and comfortable seating on hilly or uneven terrain such as sand dunes and sloping lawns. Originally made from

One of the most famous chairs.

Barcelona

Possibly one of the most famous chairs, this modernist chair design has been around for nearly a century. Designed for the 1929 Barcelona International Convention, this chair was meant to be comfortable enough for royalty, without selling out on its German designer, Mies van der Rohe’s quintessential minimalist Bauhaus style.

White plastic chair (Monobloc)

Possibly one of the most prolific chairs in the world, the white plastic chair comes in many varieties, but they all fit the same criteria. Made from a single piece of plastic, usually white, but also available in other colours, this chair is lightweight, sturdy and, most importantly can be stacked for easy storage.

Managing bugs during summer

Managing mozzies and other bugs, the bio-friendly way. We know the buzzy biting bugs are a loathed part of summer, but don’t reach for the pesticide just yet!

Why can’t I just doom the pests to their downfall?

Because aerosol pesticides do not just kill bugs. They might be fast acting when it comes to flies and mosquitos, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a slow release, long term effect on your own health.

The dangers of aerosol pesticides

Aerosol pesticide poisoning can be classified as Acute or Chronic. Both are equally dangerous and should be avoided at all costs, but they happen in different ways.

Acute poisoning

Acute poisoning is when you receive a large, dangerous dose of pesticide and show symptoms of poisoning almost immediately. These symptoms are usually trouble breathing, pain in your eyes and chest, heart palpitations and headaches, as well as twitching and weak muscles. In this case you should seek immediate medical attention.

Chronic poisoning

Chronic poisoning happens when you receive a low dose of pesticide exposure over a long period. The symptoms of this type of poisoning can include unexplained nausea, headaches, muscle weakness or pain and generalised malaise. This is more difficult to pinpoint as pesticide poisoning, but these symptoms should not be ignored either

This causes a problem

While much of South Africa is exempt from the scourge of

Malaria, this doesn’t mean we can ignore the summertime mozzie invasion.

Although insect repellents are a great way to keep them off you outdoors, they are a hassle and a potential for developing skin irritations surroundig topical insect repellent treatments. They work in well-ventilated spaces, but they aren’t great for enclosed bedrooms.

Insect screens for doors & windows

These screens are used as a staple in South African homes exactly for this reason. They allow you to have open windows for fresh air, but won’t allow any critters in. For some reason, maybe aesthetics or the rise in pesticides and repellents, they have fallen out of fashion

We want to bring them back

Gone are the days of the dark green wobbly mesh sliding frames you saw in you Granny’s house. Today’s sceens are beatifully discreet, funtional and will add a whole new level of non-toxic, bug free freshness to your home.

We are big fans of these screens, by House of Supreme.

Superclean: Water is the first step.

Superclean: how to find the balance between “good” clean and “bad: clean. Water is the first step.

Sort out your water quality sooner than later.

In a pre-pandemic life, very few people had a favourite hand-santizer and Dettols “kills 99.9% of all germs” promise was accepted as a jingle, not relied on as a life saver...Post pandemic, we place much more value on what “clean” means and how de-germ out spaces.

Is there such a thing as too clean?

Yes - there is. Humans have a certain amount of beneficial and necessary bacteria in and on our bodies that help us function and life our lives. If we go overboard and completely kill off these good bugs, we end up with bodies and immune systems that cannot cope with even the smallest outside pathogen, or simply cannot function properly. Think about the havoc that a course of antbiotics wreck on your tummy - blindly killing off everything is not the way to go.

This doesn’t mean that we need to live a dirty life.

Although a bit of dirt and mess is important, particularly for kids, in or to build good immune systems, we can still keep a high standard when it comes to things like viruses and parasites.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the different processes to clean your water.

Boiling: Many viruses and bacteria/parasites will die when they reach a certain temperature. This means that boiling waater can at least remove the worst pathogens although it won’t help with insoluble materials in the water or necessarily improve the taste.

Filtration: This can be a sensible next step, as it one of the most common processes and bassed on the filters you use, how fine they are and how many times the water flows through the system, this can remove insoluble matter and even improve the taste. This method does not remove dissolved salts and won’t do much to purify hard or brackish water.

Reverse osmosis: By far our favourite. This process is easily scalable and is the perfect final step for household water purification. This system give the best tasting water, and it guarantees exceptional purity.
