Africa is trending. We are in the spotlight for everything from fashion and film to visual arts and design. Creating a space in your home that is inspired by the African aesthetic is a great idea if you’re keeping up with décor trends. nother stylish fireplace look is going for a corner installation. The great thing about a corner piece is that it can easily separate two rooms or be incorporated into the wall. Corner fireplaces work best with open floor plans. These types of fireplaces work well in large areas that need a large fireplace to get heated up. Although gas instalments work best for linear and corner pieces, fireplace walls, on the other hand, will welcome traditional wood-burning fires.

If a fireplace is on your revamp additions list, you will have to make decisions about the heating functionality of your fireplace. There are a few popular ways to heat your fireplace. Traditional heating is an obvious one. Using wood to burn a traditional fireplace can be hard work as you need to feed the flame continuously and you need to know what you are doing so as to not smoke up your home. Gas fireplaces are very common and convenient. They provide radiant heat and come in many

shapes and sizes giving you many options. Electric fireplaces usually come assembled. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re typically on the smaller side, making them an excellent choice for smaller rooms. If you are going with a traditional wood-burning fireplace, you will also need to decide what construction to go with. Brick fireplace designs are probably the most common choice for woodburning installations because brick does not show smoke stains. Stone fireplaces come in limestone, marble, slate or ceramic tile.

Firstly, how to make up the ultimate, snuggly winter bed. All three agree that it’s all about quality winter sheets and duvet inners. “I love the feel of good quality sheets on my body; so winter sheets are a must for those cold winter nights with a duvet and a single-ply blanket – as much as I want to warm up; I also don’t want anything too heavy that I can’t even turn in the bed,” says Lindiwe.

It’s all about “...poofy, fluffy and snuggly” according to Karen. “I also swap the summer duvet inners in all the rooms with poofy and cosy feather ones and add a snuggle blanket to each bed. Marcia’s technique is to layer her beds from the bottom up and to mix and match textures. “Starting with a mattress protector, crisp white linen and quality duvet inner and pillows. Mixed with a luxurious faux throw, layered with a cosy blanket… and for finishing touches, scatters (OMG, do I love pillows).” recommends Marcia.

Comforting Whether she is in Johannesburg or Cape Town, Annemarie aims for a comforting and cosy bed. “In Johannesburg, I sleep under a Muscovy down-filled duvet that I bought in Copenhagen. The gentle down of the Muscovy reminds me of my childhood eiderdown. It is comforting and cosy. In Cape Town I sleep under a duck down duvet... but I switch on the electric blanket to warm my bed.” says Annemarie.

Whether they’re piled on the bed or scattered throughout the house, blankets and throws to cuddle under, especially while watching TV, are a winner all round. Another favourite of both Lindiwe and Marcia is the use of candles and fragrances to create a cosy ambience. “I love candles and candlelight but I steer away from them since I have young inquisitive minds running around the house!” adds Lindiwe.

Retain Heat After endearing a house so cold that their breath caused steam, Karen and her hubby did a bit of research and installed aerolite in the roof of their previous home,“ ...it made almost a 3 degree Celsius difference in the home and kept the upper floor cooler in summer as well.

” Karen recalls. Learning from the experience, they gradually installed insulation in their current home to lower the need for heaters and fans all year round. With better heat retention thanks to the insulation, Karen adds that she keeps the cold out with a DIY solution, “ I also did a DIY draught excluder installation on all of our windows that open this really helps with keeping the cold outside.”

Annemarie relied on underfloor heating, which she would have on from the end of April to mid-August. That was “Before our Eskom-Issues…” she says. “But lately I have learned to create the illusion of warmth. Replace the cool light bulbs with warm light and use the floor and table lamps turned on rather than the overhead lights.” Annemarie adds, she also borrows a gas heater from friends when Johannesburg gets very cold. She is still on the lookout to find the perfect heating solution that is compact enough to store or beautiful enough to have on permanent display.

Sustainable and alternative home heating solutions are also popular with our home gurus. “Nothing beats the warmth of a fire in winter. The fireplace is the heart of our home - to cosy up in – nothing like a roaring flame and crackle of wood!” Marcia explains.

Lindiwe is currently in the process of swapping out her open flame fireplace for a cast iron fireplace to warm her home, “I find that the open one is beautiful to look at but doesn’t really warm up the large open plan living area of the space and as such takes up too much wood to keep the space warm for longer.” says Lindiwe.

Karen made her dream of a fireplace a reality last winter, “We positioned it towards the centre of the home so that it warms up most of the house. A fireplace creates such a great ambience but also provides real heat.” says Karen.

Karen’s ideal bedroom is all about simplicity, intentional design and functionality, “Less is more when it comes to my ideal bedroom. I love the spaciousness of my bedroom and that it is light and airy, creating a space that you love and love to relax in, you do spend almost half the day in your bedroom, even if it is with your eyes shut. Gone are the days that we just put things in our bedroom without giving them much thought. Design and decorate with intention - have things in your bedroom that either have function or spark joy or both.”

“I think after this global lockdown, everybody will have a very definite view of how they want to live, what they want in their homes and whatnot,” suggests Annemarie. Looking to the future, she thinks we are moving away from “décor and lifestyle movements” towards what warms us “...body and soul”. She adds that “...there will always be a need for retail-therapy - definitely rather than only shop visits.”

List of Supplies and Materials 1 x Canvas 1 x Chalk paint in White (chalk paint colour available) 1 x Soft wax in Dark 1 x Spray paint in matte White 1 x Small paintbrush 1 x Sponge-roller and tray 1 x Medium heart plaque (160x180mm) 1 x Clear adhesive that dries fast and clear Artificial Flowers

Follow Step-by-Step below: Step One

Lay your canvas on a small drop sheet or newspaper and decant some of the chalk paint into the small painting tray that comes with the sponge roller. There are many colours of chalk paint to choose from. For this project, white was selected for the effect but any colour can be used just make sure the spray paint selected for the flowers match the chalk paint colour. Using the roller, paint the entire canvas using the sponge roller and go in the direction of how you will end up hanging the finished artwork. Paint in a vertical direction if hanging the canvas vertical for example.

Step Two Once the first layers of paint have dried, dip a paintbrush in the same paint and try to add more heavy paint lines

(either vertically or horizontally) adding more strokes of paint with the paintbrush. Try to get as many â&#x20AC;&#x153;texture/raisedâ&#x20AC;? paint strokes as you can. Let the paint dry.

until the artificial flowers and heart plaque are completely covered. Allow to dry. Ensure you turn the artificial flowers over and spray the other side and allow time for complete drying.

Step Three

Step Four Next, lay your artificial flowers and heart plaque out on the drop sheet for spray painting. Make sure you are in a well-ventilated room or outside and wearing a protective mask over your mouth. Shake your spray paint vigorously for a few minutes. With light horizontal or vertical strokes, holding the spray paint can approximately 30cm away from the objects to be sprayed, and cover in layers

Take your now spray-painted artificial flowers and heart plaque back to your dried painted canvas. Position the artificial flowers in the centre and the heart over the artificial stem, looking like a potting plant for the

flowers. Take the clear adhesive and glue (only the stem) into place carefully. Place something slightly heavier than the artificial flowers to hold in place until glue dries. Using a paintbrush one last time, paint lightly over the heart plaque and artificial flowers with light paint strokes with the chalk paint. This is just to reinforce the chalk paint colour and texture over the entire DIY 3D art canvas. Allow to dry.

(If you are going to continue to step 6 and not stop at step 5 before you stick the flowers and heart on the canvas, take out the dark soft wax tin and a thin paint brush. Dab the paintbrush in the dark wax and go lightly in the same directional paint strokes as the chalk paint and “paint” the dark wax over the canvas and on the flowers. The dark wax highlights the paint lines and strokes. Then glue the flowers and heart in place and carry on with the dark wax on the flowers and heart.)

You are left with a very rustic looking 3D flower canvas artwork that family and friends won’t believe you made yourself! Make one, make many, hang solo or in a line, wherever you place this artwork it is bound to get attention.

Melting Chocolate

Nothing goes better together than coffee and chocolate. An international go-to combo that seems to miraculously melt problems away. This is the perfect winter recipe; warm chocolate cake oozing with chocolate lava, otherwise known as melting chocolate cake.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat your oven to 200”C. (make sure the fan is off) Grease 4 small ramekins, around 8cm in diameter.

Homemade Ice - Cream Delectable 101

Ice cream is basically a combination of milk and cream, which are both great sources of calcium, Vitamin A and D, riboflavin and phosphorus. Some food for thought, calcium is key in ice cream and calcium rich products keeps your body strong and metabolism working.

1L Fresh full cream 1 Tin (385g) condensed milk 300g of your choice of ingredient

METHOD Pour the full litre of cream into your mixer, whisk on medium until your cream has soft peaks, then fold condensed milk into the cream, add in whichever flavouring you desire. floor heating (wet) uses water to heat the floors. With water heating, a series of pipes beneath the floorboards or tiles are connected to your water heater (geyser) which then circulates warm water throughout the structure. Developments in hydronic underfloor heating systems offer an alternative to electrical systems. The hot water alternative will keep your entire home

warm at a reduced long-term cost. Electric underﬂoor heating (dry) uses a large system of wires placed under the ﬂoor in the room you wish to heat. Some people opt for heating mats that can be laid to cover a large portion of the room, whereas others go with a system of individual wires

that can reach all parts of a room. The heating mats tend to be a bit more affordable as they can be mass-produced in a variety of shapes and sizes.

LONG-TERM SAVINGS OR NOT? The initial cost of

installing hydronic underfloor heating is higher than its electrical counterpart. However, in the long run, it is cheaper and more efficient to run than other heat sources. Hydronic heating systems also have an extremely long lifespan and require little maintenance once installed correctly. The system should last a minimum of 50 years. Electrical underfloor heating, on the other hand, is generally more costly to run than hydronic underfloor heating. It may be wise to restrict it to smaller living areas.

As a radiant heating source, underﬂoor heating is able to evenly heat entire rooms from the ground up. Develop a positive connection when you leave the house by giving your pet a treat at the door just before you leave. This will make them happy to see you leave every day and the routine will help them feel more relaxed. Treat Treasure Hunt Give your cat or dog some exciting and rewarding exercise with their own scavenger hunt. For cats, this can be done using their regular food portion, divided into separate bowls or using a few treats (don’t give more than the recommended daily amount). It’s as easy as putting your chosen “treasure” in separate bowls and placing them in different places around the house so your cat needs to look for them. Remember to put them in safe, easy to see and access places

that your cat would usually use such as a window sill, on a chair or simply on the floor. It’s also a good idea to make a note of where you put the food so you can pick up any leftovers. As your cat gets the hang of it you can increase the difficulty by hiding the bowls without them seeing where you are putting them or putting them out of sight. Keep an eye on them while they go about the hunt in case they get bored or decide to catch something they shouldn’t. For dogs, you can start by throwing a small treat close by and telling them to find it. Do this a few times, throwing it further away each time. Once your dog has gotten the hang of it you can hide the “treasure” in different spots such as behind doors, on a chair, in a bowl or in a different room. Make sure they are looking at the treat before throwing it and guide them using your hand if they are struggling to find a well-hidden treat.

Level-Up Playtime Regular playtime is vital for exercise, mental stimulation and bonding. You can take playtime to the next level by setting up a simple obstacle course for your pet to enjoy. Make sure you have enough room for you and your pet to move around safely and use easily collapsible and soft objects so your pet does not get hurt if they knock something over. Remember to keep it fun, don’t force your pet to do an activity they are not interested in and reward them for a job well done. Adjust the course to suit your pet’s size, ability and skill level. Jumping Obstacles Use a hula-hoop or pool noodle and get your dog to jump over it. Keep your dog safe by starting on the ground and gradually increase the height as your pet’s skills and confidence improve. Use treats or a toy at the start to entice them to walk over the obstacle. Weaving: Start with two obstacles such as coldrink bottles placed in a row and have your pet zig-zag through them. As they learn you can add more obstacles to the line. Dog’s are best

taught to do this by following you through a few times. For cat’s, you

can use a toy on a string to lead them through. Tunnel: Drape a blanket over the back of some chairs or a table to make a tunnel. Place a treat or a toy at the end of the tunnel to encourage your pet to walk through. Take the Stairs (for dogs): Get excess energy out by walking up and down the stairs with your dog. This exercise is not ideal for small breeds such as dachshunds who may struggle with the stairs. Homemade Treats Treat your pet with some homemade snacks. These recipes are easy to make and store for when you want to reward your pet. Treats should make up a maximum of 10% of your pet’s daily nutrition.

Canned Food Dog Treats (from Hills) Ingredients 1 can of dog food

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line an oven tray with baking paper. 2. Shake the loaf of food out of the can and cut into bite-sized pieces about 6cm thick. 3. Place on a baking sheet-lined oven pan and bake for about 30 minutes. 4. Leave to cool, store treats in the fridge for up to 7 days. Tuna Cat Treats (from Supakit) Ingredients - 1 egg white - 1 tin tuna in oil or water (drained)

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 170°C and line an oven tray with baking paper. 2. Separate the egg and place the white in a large mixing bowl. 3. Whisk the egg white until stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed. 4. In a separate bowl, add the tin of tuna and add two tablespoons of the whisked egg white. Blend until a smooth paste is formed. 5. Gently fold the tuna mixture into the remaining whisked egg white. 6. Pipe or spoon the mixture into small bite-sized dollops on the baking paper. 7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the treats feel dry to the touch and easily move around the baking paper. 8. Leave to cool and store in an air-tight container in a cool place for up to 2 weeks.

to Make a DIY Modern Dog Bed

Vermont Sales’ brand Kreg runs an informative and interactive portal with loads of FREE content and tipshttps://www.buildsomething.com/ at buildsomething.com. This site literally has everything you need from small to larger and more ambitious projects. In April we looked at the 5-in-1 Kids Art Station, but for May, our favourite project is the DIY Modern Dog Bed. This modern dog bed is a simple build that will put a wag in your best friend’s tail. It’s designed to fit a large dog but is easily modified for any size dog you have and you can build it from a half sheet of plywood in just a few hours. Simply add a bed pillow and you’re good to go! Pet approved!

MATERIALS REQUIRED WOOD PRODUCTS:

1 x 3/4” Thick, Half Sheet, Plywood 1 x 1x8, 36”, Board Board Hardware/Supplies: 8 x 2” wood screws 18 x 1 1/4” pocket hole screws

PARTS/CUT LIST:

1 x Back Box Side, 3/4” x 10” x 35 1/2” 2 x Box Sides, 3/4” x 10” x 24” 1 x Front Box Side, 3/4” x 10” x 17” 1 x Box Bottom, 3/4” x 24” x 34” 4 x Legs cut to template design, 3/4” x 6” x 7”

Step 1 Cut Plywood Pieces Cut pieces from a half sheet of ¾” thick plywood according to the cut list. NOTE: This dog bed is designed to fit a dog pillow of about 25x35 inches measured laying on the ground puffed up (it’s 28x38 laying FLAT according to the tag). If you have a different size, cut your bottom 1 inch smaller in width and length than your dog pillow and cut to fit the side pieces around the bottom. Step 3: Assemble Dog Bed Box Drill ¾” pocket holes along the bottom of the dog bed box using a Kreg pocket hole jig, along the back edges of the side pieces and along the front edge of the left side piece. Then, using 1 ¼” pocket hole screws, attach the back and sides of the dog bed box like shown through the holes drilled in the bottom. Step 4: Assemble Dog Bed Box Continued Once the pieces are attached along the bottom holes, also screw the sides together through the pocket holes in the back of the side pieces like shown. NOTE: You can drill the pocket holes in the back piece instead of the side pieces. That’s

Step 2: Apply Edge Banding An optional step is to apply edge banding. Apply it along the tops and every plywood edge that will be exposed.

definitely an option, however, if you cut and assemble pieces the way shown here, it’s easier to cut all your pieces from a half sheet of plywood vs. having to buy a whole sheet. Step 5: Stain Dog Bed Box Stain the box in your preferred colours. We used two colours for this project. The front piece was one colour and the rest of the box was another colour. Step 6: Install the Front Side of Dog Bed To add a little visual interest, set your table saw blade depth to ¼” and cut a few kerfs spaced about 1 ¼” apart on the front. This is TOTALLY optional and just a decorative touch. Finish (stain or paint) the front piece and attach through the pocket holes on the bottom and the front edge of the left side piece like shown. Step 7: Install Front Side of Dog Bed Continued Attach the front piece from the sides. Step 8: Cut Dog Bed Legs Cut four legs according to this template. You can cut these from leftover plywood, or some scrap wood, or a 1x8 board. I cut mine from some scrap walnut pieces.

Step 9: Install Dog Bed Legs Screw these legs into the bed box. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s helpful to use a square to line the leg up at a 45-degree angle on the bottom side, then use the square at the top to help you line up where to drive the screws. Pre-drill and drive two 2â&#x20AC;? wood screws per leg to attach. Step 10: Finish Finish the legs and dog bed box as desired. I used a water-based clear coat poly. Then, add your dog bed and your dog and you and your best friend are ready for a nap!
