Cosy

WINTERHOME The South African winter may not be the coldest when co mpared to the rest of the world but m ost of us can agree that the icy winds, cr isp, dry air and rain in some parts of th e country are cold enough to warrant a few changes to cosy up your hom e.

We asked interior designer, writer and editor of SA Decor and Design, Marcia Margolius, award-winning lifestyle blogger, Karen Kelly (Lovilee Blog), Interior Designer and winner of the Johannesburg HOMEMAKERS Expo Designer Spaces Challenge 2020 winner, Lindiwe Ludonga (Blooming Oaks Inc.) and Deputy Editor of Visi magazine, Annemarie Meintjes to share how they are getting their homes ready for winter.

Sheets

Firstly, how to make up the ultimate, snuggly winter bed. All three agree that it’s all about quality winter sheets and duvet inners. “I love the feel of good quality sheets on my body; so winter sheets are a must for those cold winter nights with a duvet and a single-ply blanket – as much as I want to warm up; I also don’t want anything too heavy that I can’t even turn in the bed,” says Lindiwe.

SNUGGLY

It’s all about “...poofy, fluffy and snuggly” according to Karen. “I also swap the summer duvet inners in all the rooms with poofy and cosy feather ones and add a snuggle blanket to each bed. Everyone in our family has bed socks and snuggly pyjamas so no need to spend extra on electric blankets or heaters in our rooms,” says Karen. MELANIE WESSELS PHOTOGRAPHY

Marcia’s technique is to layer her beds from the bottom up and to mix and match textures. “Starting with a mattress protector, crisp white linen and quality duvet inner and pillows. Mixed with a luxurious faux throw, layered with a cosy lan et and for finishing touches, scatters (OMG, do I love pillows).” recommends Marcia.

Comforting Whether she is in Johannesburg or Cape Town, Annemarie aims for a comforting and cosy bed. “In Johannesburg, I sleep under a usco y down filled du et that I bought in Copenhagen. The gentle down of the Muscovy reminds me of my childhood eiderdown. It is comforting and cosy. In Cape Town I sleep under a duck down duvet... but I switch on the electric blanket to warm my bed.” says Annemarie.

Whether they’re piled on the bed or scattered throughout the house, blankets and throws to cuddle under, especially while watching TV, are a winner all round. Another favourite of both Lindiwe and Marcia is the use of candles and fragrances to create a cosy ambience. “I love candles and candlelight but I steer away from them since I have young inquisitive minds running around the house!” adds Lindiwe.

diy AEROLITE

Retain Heat After endearing a house so cold that their breath caused steam, Karen and her hubby did a bit of research and installed aerolite in the roof of their previous home,“ ...it made almost a 3 degree Celsius difference in the home a pt t upp floo ool in summer as well.

” Karen recalls. Learning from the experience, they gradually installed insulation in their current home to lower the need for heaters and fans all year round. With better heat retention thanks to the insulation, Karen adds that she keeps the cold out with a DIY solution, “ I also did a DIY draught excluder installation on all of our windows that open this really helps with keeping the cold outside.”

Warmth

nnemarie relied on under oor heating, which she would have on from the end of April to mid-August. That was “Before our Eskom-Issues…” she says. ut lately have learned to create the illusion of warmth. eplace the cool light bulbs with warm light, and use the oor and table lamps turned on rather than the overhead lights.” Annemarie adds. She also borrows a gas heater from friends when Johannesburg gets very cold. he is still on the lookout to find the perfect heating solution that is compact enoug to store or beautiful enough to have on permanent display.

Sustainable

Sustainable and alternative home heating solutions are also popular with our home gurus. “Nothing beats the warmth of a fire in winter. The fireplace is the heart of our home - to cosy up in – nothing like a roaring ame and crackle of wood arcia explains.

Beautiful

indiwe is currently in the process of swapping out her open ame fireplace for a cast iron fireplace to warm her home, find that the open one is beautiful to look at but doesn’t really warm up the large open plan living area of the space and as such takes up too much wood to keep the space warm for longer. says Lindiwe.

Real Heat

Karen made her dream of a fireplace a reality last winter, “We positioned it towards the centre of the home so that it warms up most of the house. fireplace creates such a great ambience but also provides real heat.” says Karen.

to explore Every year new home décor trends make their way into our homes – sometimes without us even noticing. Large interior decorating suppliers and wholesalers take buying inspiration from art, architecture and fashion. 2020 waved goodbye to many décor trends like cool tones, accent walls, mirrored furniture, faux plants and even those picture-perfect karate chopped pillows. You know the kind – beautiful scatter pillows finished off with a firm chop in the middle. With so many new trends to explore in 2020, we have chosen a few of our favourites you can explore for your next home improvement project. Here are our top five décor trends to try right now.

When it comes to mixing metals there are a few things to consider before making the eccentric change. Start by choosing a dominant metal type and incorporate one or two other metals as accents only. Balance cool and warm metal tones and take your colour palette into careful consideration. This is important when keeping the flow of your space classic and uncluttered.

Bold Black & White

A timeless look that never goes out of style. Black and white is a high contrast look that works well on floors, walls and furniture. With monochromatic styles coming into fashion, you simply cannot go wrong with a bold black and white look. Incorporate bright accents with this style.

Large Kitchen islands

A kitchen island is the focal point of the entire kitchen area. It serves as a functional and a decorative piece giving your kitchen a warm, cosy feel. Although kitchen islands have been around for many years, what we are seeing now are large islands that are functional and great for storage. Depending on your preferences and space, you can achieve a variety of styles and designs.

Wet Rooms Wet rooms have become very popular over the last couple of years and it makes total sense. A wet room is a space in your bathroom where your shower and bath with floors and walls are separate to your toilet and basin area. A wet room is usually designed with a sloping floor which guides any water towards a drain. Accessing all the amenities that essentially get you wet in one area is a great way to create a space that is functional and stylish. Wet rooms also increase the value of your home.

Rattan & Wicker furniture

This trend may take you back to your childhood, but the truth is, rattan and wicker furniture has made a comeback. Styled with an array of potted and hanging plants, rattan furniture is the perfect accessory for a space with bohemian influences. This is also a great option for kids rooms or cosy outdoor patios.

REIMAGINE

YOUR HOME International research has shown, pre-COVID-19, that consumers are spending more money on their home than fashion. Our prediction is that this trend will increase, in months and years to come. Social distancing and lockdown has afforded us the time to rethink and reimagine our homes. We have counted our blessings and noticed the short comings.

We’ve also realised that our relationship with our homes have changed forever. Homes are no longer a place where you go when you have nothing to do, it has now become a dynamic social space where stuff happens. While we wait for equilibrium to return, we will work, live and entertain from home.

Accept What you Can’t and Do What you Can Not all projects are equal,

some take budget and planning while others imagination and elbow grease. So draw up your to-do lists and set some long, medium and short term goals.

Tips to Get you Started: Declutter and Clean Use the three boxes system; box 1= keep, box 2= donate, box 3 = throw it away.

VAAL TRIANGLE •

TO ADVERTISE PHONE 0861 11 4663

Electronically scan personal records and kids artwork. Save it on a hard drive and in your cloud storing app and then throw it in the recycling bin. Be ruthless. Here is a tip that really works; make sure you drive away the donate and throw away boxes the same day you declutter. The longer it sits in your garage the higher the risk that you will contract de-clutter remorse and those items will slowly find their way back into your house.

Make it Smell Great Once you’ve eliminated bad odours introduce new smells. Give your home a great scent. There are various ways of doing this, from fragranced furniture oils to electrical or reed diffusers or scented candles. Never underestimate the sense of smell in creating your sanctuary.

Layout Once decluttered, relook each room’s layout. Make sure it is easy to navigate, move furniture so you don’t have to crisscross to get to the other side of the room, create pathways to ensure the positive flow of energy. It’s well worth it to research décor design principles of the Danish ‘Hygge’ (

pronounced hoo-gah), the Chinese ‘Feng Shui’, or the Swedish ‘Lagom’ (Lar-gohm). These principles deal with cosiness, harmony, and balance in the home and offer great guides to style your home in a way that will put you in a good mood.

Purpose As part of the declutter process, make sure that you use rooms for its original purpose. Bedrooms for sleeping, a dining room for eating and living rooms for

relaxing or watching TV. Not only are these good habits but by setting these boundaries you immediately fool your brain into what it is supposed to do when in that room.

80/20 Rule When redesigning your home, remember the golden 80/20 rule: 80 per cent classic and 20 per cent trend. It makes it easier to introduce seasonal changes and also more affordable,as you only have to change 20% of your décor to stay trendy.

Walls Paint is still the most cost-effective and fastest way to transform any space. We all know that different colours are linked to different emotions, so keep this in mind when choosing colours especially for bedrooms and living rooms! Another new trend is the use of 3D wall covering. With immediate dazzling effects you can transform a boring wall into a multi-dimensional focal point.

Wallpaper has made a

huge comeback and can instantly transform a room from the mundane to exquisite. Today it is easier to apply and remove and it is not as permanent as it used to be in the past. With digital advances you can personalise your wallpaper, creating your own masterpieces. And don’t forget about the fifth wall - the ceiling. Applying paint or wallpaper on a ceiling will turn any ordinary room into something extraordinary. Tip: Looking for some free images you can use in your home as either paintings or

wallpaper? Visit Unsplash for fantastic free images. Maybe you enjoy the old masters and classics. Then join Rijksmuseum’s Rijksstudio, where they allow you to download these famous works of art in large format. Print these on canvas or as wallpaper.

Your Happy Place One of the biggest elements to remember when reimagining your home is you! Always keep in mind that you are creating a place for YOU and your family! And don’t forget to have some serious FUN while you make your home dreams come true.

DIYWITH Elle Mother’s Day 3D DIY Flower Projec t

Nothing beats a homemade gift on

Mother’s day!

It used to be a tradition to make your gift from scratch and now that the shops may be off-limits, this great DIY flower project is just perfect! Elle Franco from DIY with Elle shows us how to make a fun Mother’s Day gift. Watch the VIDEO on the 3D DIY Flower Project or see our step by step how-to below.

List of Supplies and Materials 1 x Canvas 1 x Chalk paint in White (chalk paint colour available) 1 x Soft wax in Dark 1 x Spray paint in matte White 1 x Small paintbrush 1 x Sponge-roller and tray 1 x Medium heart plaque (160x180mm) 1 x Clear adhesive that dries fast and clear Artificial Flowers

Follow Step-by-Step below:

Step One

Lay your canvas on a small drop sheet or newspaper and decant some of the chalk paint into the small painting tray that comes with the sponge roller. There are many colours of chalk paint to choose from. For this project, white was selected for the effect but any colour can be used just make sure the spray paint selected for the flowers match the chalk paint colour. Using the roller, paint the entire canvas using the sponge roller and go in the direction of how you will end up hanging the finished artwork. Paint in a vertical direction if hanging the canvas vertical for example.

Step Two Once the first layers of paint have dried, dip a paintbrush in the same paint and try to add more heavy paint lines

(either vertically or horizontally) adding more strokes of paint with the paintbrush. Try to get as many “texture/raised” paint strokes as you can. Let the paint dry.

until the artificial flowers and heart plaque are completely covered. Allow to dry. Ensure you turn the artificial flowers over and spray the other side and allow time for complete drying.

Step Three

Step Four Next, lay your artificial flowers and heart plaque out on the drop sheet for spray painting. Make sure you are in a well-ventilated room or outside and wearing a protective mask over your mouth. Shake your spray paint vigorously for a few minutes. With light horizontal or vertical strokes, holding the spray paint can approximately 30cm away from the objects to be sprayed, and cover in layers

Take your now spray-painted artificial flowers and heart plaque back to your dried painted canvas. Position the artificial flowers in the centre and the heart over the artificial stem, looking like a potting plant for the

Step Five

flowers. Take the clear adhesive and glue (only the stem) into place carefully. Place something slightly heavier than the artificial flowers to hold in place until glue dries. Using a paintbrush one last time, paint lightly over the heart plaque and artificial flowers with light paint strokes with the chalk paint. This is just to reinforce the chalk paint colour and texture over the entire DIY 3D art canvas. Allow to dry.

(If you are going to continue to step 6 and not stop at step 5 before you stick the flowers and heart on the canvas, take out the dark soft wax tin and a thin paint brush. Dab the paintbrush in the dark wax and go lightly in the same directional paint strokes as the chalk paint and “paint” the dark wax over the canvas and on the flowers. The dark wax highlights the paint lines and strokes. Then glue the flowers and heart in place and carry on with the dark wax on the flowers and heart.)

You are left with a very rustic looking 3D flower canvas artwork that family and friends won’t believe you made yourself! Make one, make many, hang solo or in a line, wherever you place this artwork it is bound to get attention.

UNDERFLOOR Heating

S

In this article, we discover the best underfloor heating options for you. Underfloor heating is low maintenance and suitable for any type of floor.

OUTH AFRICA IS LUCKY TO HAVE FAIRLY MILD WINTERS IN COMPARISON TO SNOWIER PARTS OF THE WORLD. HOWEVER, THE CHILLIER SNAPS, ESPECIALLY IN THE EVENINGS, MAY HAVE YOU PILING BLANKETS ON TO TRY TO KEEP WARM. UNDERFLOOR HEATING HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A FEW DECADES BUT RISING ELECTRICITY PRICES HAVE KEPT MANY AWAY FROM INVESTING IN IT AS A HOME OR BUSINESS HEATING SYSTEM.

WET AND DRY Hydronic under-

floor heating (wet) uses water to heat the floors. With water heating, a series of pipes beneath the floorboards or tiles are connected to your water heater (geyser) which then circulates warm water throughout the structure. Developments in hydronic underfloor heating systems offer an alternative to electrical systems. The hot water alternative will keep your entire home

i h e i m h s l m c a

E t c u w a

E warm at a reduced long-term cost. Electric underfloor heating (dry) uses a large system of wires placed under the floor in the room you wish to heat. Some people opt for heating mats that can be laid to cover a large portion of the room, whereas others go with a system of individual wires

that can reach all parts of a room. The heating mats tend to be a bit more affordable as they can be mass-produced in a variety of shapes and sizes.

LONG-TERM SAVINGS OR NOT? The initial cost of

installing hydronic under oor heating is higher than its electrical counterpart. However, in the long run, it is cheaper and more efficient to run than other heat sources. Hydronic heating systems also have an extremely long lifespan and require little maintenance once installed correctly. The system should last a minimum of 50 years. Electrical under oor heating, on the other hand, is generally more costly to run than hydronic under oor heating. It may be wise to restrict it to smaller living areas.

EFFICIENT HEATING

As a radiant heating source, under oor heating is able to evenly heat entire rooms from the ground up. That means there are no cold spots and the room can easily be kept at a constant, comfortable temperature. Different heat sources are available to suit your needs and preferences. Heat pumps, boiler

PRETORIA HOMEMAKERS • NOVEMBER 2019

pellets and solar heating are the most popular. Installing a buffer tank to store heated water for when it is needed can prolong your heat pump’s lifespan. Electric under oor heating is a lot easier to install compared to the pipes required for hydronic systems. It is not expensive to install and can most probably be done by you.

THINK BIG To make it a cost-effec-

tive investment, hydronic heating is best suited to spaces that are bigger than 100m². Therefore, it is best to have water under oor heating installed across your entire home or as an integrated part of your home’s water heating system. Single rooms such as bathrooms are best suited for electric under oor heating as it will most likely only be used during the winter months.

AFRICAN

INSPIRED DéCOR

Africa is trending. We are in the spotlight for everything from fashion and film to visual arts and design. Creating a space in your home that is inspired by the African aesthetic is a great idea if you’re keeping up with décor trends. African décor and design elements can give your home a warm, sophisticated feel. A few trends we picked up from the Designer Spaces Challenge at the

Johannesburg HOMEMAKERS Expo, is that African inspired decorative elements are easy to achieve and never go out of style. Incorporating raw elements and hand-crafted items like woven baskets and mats are a good start. Bright beadwork, monochromatic prints and well thought out colour schemes help to create the perfect African ambience. Here are a few elements you can include

to get the perfect African inspired look.

Raw Materials Raw wood, leather, and stone are three key elements to incorporate into your African inspired space to give a sense of earthiness. Earthy colours can be found in natural metals like gold and brass too if you prefer a more industrial style. Tapestry Play African skins are not the

designed wall tapestries or carpets. Wall tapestries are great because unlike wall art, you do not have to frame it to make it look stylish. Bright Accents Bright colours may be a given when creating an African inspired room, but balance is key. Consider using monochromatic items in your furniture and artworks and add bright accents with artisanal crafts, scatter cushions and lampshades or vice versa. Indoor Plants Surrounding yourself with typically African greenery is a sure way to create the illusion of being outdoors. Africa is

THE ADVANTAGES OF ECO-FRIENDLY

T

here are many reasons to choose thatching. From its traditional feel to its eco-friendly contributions, thatching is a trendy, natural style of roofing. Thatched roofs or the iconic South African lapa-style roof are very well known among South Africans. In the United Kingdom, country homes also showcase this style of roofing and it has been a cost-effective method of roofing for centuries. Considered one of the oldest types of roofing, we share the advantages of thatching up!

LOW MAINTENANCE

If thatch is professionally laid, it can be maintenance-free for many years. Thatching is still used in many developing countries as a low cost form of roofing and is also used in exotic, warm climates for aesthetic purposes and convenience. Thatch can, however, be destroyed by birds looking for nesting materials. This can destroy your roof within a year after installation. A well maintained thatched roof is extremely durable and could last between and years.

INTERESTING FUN FACT

Did you know that Disney World hired thatchers from KwaZulu Natal to build all the thatch roofs at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park? Being Disney they followed all the correct health and safety building rules, which included heavy-duty safety boots. On day two on the job, the foreman for the South African thatchers approached their site manager and humbly requested that they continue their work barefooted. He explained that if they continued with the boots, there will most definitely be an accident as they only know how to do their work barefooted. They were the only team allowed to break the strict safety rules.

VERSATILE AND AFFORDABLE There is a certain charm that goes with a traditional thatched roof. This renewable and sustainable style of roofing is affordable and versatile. Whether you are choosing thatch for your home, garden or the beach gazebo at your holiday home, the versatility of it means it can be used for various types of buildings. It is a popular option for people who are looking for a rustic feel and aesthetic. Photo from: Thaba Eco Hotel

EXCELLENT INSULATION The excellent insulation qualities of thatch ensures that you won’t need any additional insulation. A well-built thatched roof is naturally waterproof and environmentally friendly. Because thatch is a natural insulator it keeps your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter - which will save you money in the long run.

A thatched roof will not only give you the benefits listed above, but it will also contribute to reducing your carbon footprint. Experience the true meaning of organic living with a thatch. Find a thatching expert in HOMEMAKERS today!

KEEP YOUR PETS HAPPY AND

healthy

Develop a positive connection when you leave the house by giving your pet a treat at the door just before you leave. This will make them happy to see you leave every day and the routine will help them feel more relaxed. Treat Treasure Hunt Give your cat or dog some exciting and rewarding exercise with their own scavenger hunt. For cats, this can be done using their regular food portion, divided into separate bowls or using a few treats (don’t give more than the recommended daily amount). It’s as easy as putting your chosen “treasure” in separate bowls and placing them in different places around the house so your cat needs to look for them. Remember to put them in safe, easy to see and access places

that your cat would usually use such as a window sill, on a chair or simply on the floor. It’s also a good idea to make a note of where you put the food so you can pick up any leftovers. As your cat gets the hang of it you can increase the difficulty by hiding the bowls without them seeing where you are putting them or putting them out of sight. Keep an eye on them while they go about the hunt in case they get bored or decide to catch something they shouldn’t. For dogs, you can start by throwing a small treat close by and telling them to find it. Do this a few times, throwing it further away each time. Once your dog has gotten the hang of it you can hide the “treasure” in different spots such as behind doors, on a chair, in a bowl or in a different room. Make sure they are looking at the treat before throwing it and guide them using your hand if they are struggling to find a well-hidden treat.

Level-Up Playtime Regular playtime is vital for exercise, mental stimulation and bonding. You can take playtime to the next level by setting up a simple obstacle course for your pet to enjoy. Make sure you have enough room for you and your pet to move around safely and use easily collapsible and soft objects so your pet does not get hurt if they knock something over. Remember to keep it fun, don’t force your pet to do an activity they are not interested in and reward them for a job well done. Adjust the course to suit your pet’s size, ability and skill level. Jumping Obstacles Use a hula-hoop or pool noodle and get your dog to jump over it. Keep your dog safe by starting on the ground and gradually increase the height as your pet’s skills and confidence improve. Use treats or a toy at the start to entice them to walk over the obstacle. Weaving: Start with two obstacles such as coldrink bottles placed in a row and have your pet zig-zag through them. As they learn you can add more obstacles to the line. Dog’s are best

taught to do this by following you through a few times. For cat’s, you

can use a toy on a string to lead them through. Tunnel: Drape a blanket over the back of some chairs or a table to make a tunnel. Place a treat or a toy at the end of the tunnel to encourage your pet to walk through. Take the Stairs (for dogs): Get excess energy out by walking up and down the stairs with your dog. This exercise is not ideal for small breeds such as dachshunds who may struggle with the stairs. Homemade Treats Treat your pet with some homemade snacks. These recipes are easy to make and store for when you want to reward your pet. Treats should make up a maximum of 10% of your pet’s daily nutrition.
