At Homeport we believe giving a Voice to people with needs related to poverty – people who often cannot speak for themselves – improves the Vision of a stronger community for all. We strategically and creatively address the practical needs of limited income people, particularly in initiatives that promote a healthy, stable home. Since Homeport’s inception, our goal has always been to go beyond the provision of bricks and mortar. That’s why we seek to care for each resident in our communities, providing access to resources and education designed to address some of the most foundational needs people have. This past year has been an exciting one for us and Central Ohio, from the development of Eastway Court, a Phase II of one of our senior communities, to our new initiatives in the Hilltop area to build 39 single family homes, to moving into a new office space. We completed our Trabue Crossing community providing 52 homes for families in an area within walking distance to shopping and employment opportunities. All while continuing to provide children with out
of school programs and various adult services for our over 5,700 residents in Central Ohio. Through your support we continue to build homes for those who are seeking to improve the quality of their lives. Tonight we celebrate the power of using a Voice to fulfill a Vision by honoring my colleague and good friend, Maude Hill. Maude and I have worked together since I was first introduced to Homeport through volunteer work, and today is a cherished teammate. Maude has served the people of Central Ohio through Homeport for the past 25 years. Her Vision is for all people to have a home, and she uses her Voice every day to make that a reality for more and more people. So tonight we celebrate. We celebrate you for believing in and supporting us, we celebrate Maude and the accomplishments she has achieved, and together we celebrate our Voice and Vision as we work to transform lives. Thank you for your continued confidence and support in Homeport as we move into our 28th year of providing quality, affordable homes so that people can succeed and thrive.
Sincerely,
Amy D. Klaben President & CEO

2015 Vision Award Recipient Maude Hill
Maude Hill is a defender of the poor, an advocate for the oppressed and a force to be reckoned with. Born near Selma, Alabama, Maude has spent her life fighting for justice.
AFTER ATTENDING ALABAMA STATE
University, Maude began her career as a secretary at the Welfare Rights Movement in Cleveland, Ohio. It was there that she advocated for the decent treatment of welfare recipients. After several failed attempts at gaining the attention of the county’s commissioners, Maude and her coworkers organized a sit-in by locking themselves, and all of the county commissioners, into their building on a Friday afternoon. Though they were arrested that day, that next month they organized a walk from Cleveland to the statehouse in Columbus, where they gained the attention of Governor James A. Rhodes. Their efforts ultimately succeeded in raising welfare checks from $5 per person to $35 a person. It was that success that motivated Maude to continue fighting for issues of equality. In 1968 Maude began working at the Cleveland Pride Office, funded by Cleveland’s mayor, Carl Stokes. Years later, she worked for Cuyahoga County as a case manager, directly serving the people for which she had spent so many years advocating. From there she moved to Cleveland’s Community Relations Department during a time when desegregation of schools and buses was still heavily opposed. One of Maude’s responsibilities was to make sure the children were transported to and from school safely. Maude and her husband were also strong advocates in the Civil Rights Movement, helping African Americans gain fair access to employment and housing. Her husband organized pickets of McDonald’s, demanding the company allow black buyers to purchase franchises. The boycott ended when McDonald’s agreed to accept black investors. Maude later had dinner in the White House under former
President Jimmy Carter to celebrate the success of the Cleveland Delegation. She and her husband relocated to Columbus in 1982 and both began working for Governor Richard Frank “Dick” Celeste’s administration. She was with the Department of Recovery Services and worked to pass a major house bill that changed the way professionals treated alcohol and drug abuse, which resulted in the formation of the Ohio Department of Drugs and Alcohol Recovery Services. After a short time away from work to take care of an ill daughter, Maude came to Homeport, where she was hired as the Family Development Specialist. Six months later she was promoted to a property manager, then to Director of Operations, and finally to Vice President of Community and Government Relations, a role she’s held for the majority of her 25 years at Homeport. In addition to her work accomplishments, Maude raised 15 children and has 23 grandchildren. Maude was the recipient of the Ripple of Hope Award by IMPACT Community Action Agency in 2014, the Community Service Award from The PURPOSE Magazine in 2001, and Soldier of the Faith by Unity Economic Summit in 1998. Today, as always, Maude fights for fair access to opportunity, believing that all people should be able to go to bed every night well fed and in a safe, decent home. Maude Hill is a tenacious, passionate and courageous visionary who has devoted her life to lifting up those who often can’t fight for themselves, a commitment that has had a transformative effect on many lives.
