Marilyn
Sister Marilyn Hopkins faced upheaval when her birth sister, whom she had been living with, passed away. Homeport's Eastway Court was just the home she needed. For decades Sister Marilyn Hopkins has shared the Gospel message by example, living a simple life in Central Ohio while sharing her income with the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity. “I’m still responsible to the Order,” said Hopkins, who at one point in her life was director of radiology at St. Ann’s Hospital. “When I was working, my salary
would go to the Order. Even now my retirement goes to them and they send an allotment back.” But Hopkins, a Columbus native who had lived in or near Whitehall since 1980, faced a major challenge when her birth sister Joanne Distelzweig, whom she had been living with, passed away in 2013.

Delmecia & Dwight
After a painful experience with foreclosure, Delmecia and Dwight had all but given up on ever owning a home again – until Homeport classes gave them the sure footing they needed. In 2006, Delmecia and Dwight Wilkins were excited at the prospect of owning their first home – a three-bedroom house in Canal Winchester that seemed perfect for their growing family. But in an experience that typifies lending practices prior to the 2008 recession, the Wilkinses were approved for a mortgage that overextended them financially. To make matters worse, both lost their jobs after being
approved, but were pressured into closing on the sale anyway. Although both found new jobs, they struggled to keep up on mortgage payments, and moved out of their home in 2009 when it became clear the bank would not work with them on restructuring debt. Pursuing home ownership again seemed like a lost dream until 2013, when a co-worker suggested they look into Homeport finance classes.

Tamiko
Tamiko used to say she was not a “school kind of person." But after two years of summer activities at Pheasant Run, her academic and career aspirations have flourished. In early 2015, Nicole Pettiford worried about how her daughter Tamiko would spend her last summer before starting High School. The vision of days lost to video games and TV was not appealing, particularly given Tamiko's self-described distaste for learning. Fortunately, the summer of 2015 became a watershed season for Tamiko, thanks to on-site summer programming Homeport arranged with the Boys and
Girls Clubs of Columbus. From challenging “Brain Gain” exercises to bowling and volleyball, Tamiko enjoyed activities that ultimately helped her educational retention. That autumn, Tamiko started ninth grade at Pickerington North High School and had one of her best academic years ever. “If it wasn’t for Spanish I would have made the Honor Roll,” Tamiko said. “I got at least a ‘B’ in every other subject.”

Generosity is needed.
Hundreds of families still don't have access to programs that have made such a difference for children like Tamiko. Many seniors, like Sister Marilyn Hopkins, live on a limited income and struggle to afford the type of home that can provide them with dignity and security as they age.
Your generosity makes a difference for people like Tamiko, Marilyn, Dwight and Delmecia.
Generosity is Rewarding.
For three generations the Kelleys have given their time, talent and treasure to tackle some of the most pressing needs facing low-income Central Ohioans. In 2015, the Kelleys sat down with Homeport to talk about what their family has learned about generosity, and how it has changed them personally.
