| editor’s message

E Editor’s Message Who doesn’t love summer? It is that glorious season when days are longer, skies look bluer and the seemingly endless sunshine alters our state of mind… a time when, even the most fanatical workaholic, possibly you and certainly me, find more time to be at home and spend more time living. Summertime is also my favourite time of year to redecorate; taking inspiration from the vibrancy and full bloom of the season. Similarly, the summer issue of Homes & Living magazine is filled with inspiring homes, interior design ideas and new (yet familiar) faces. Speaking of familiar faces, Homes and Living is privileged to welcome Tony Parsons as our celebrity writer for Tony’s Take, a regular feature column. As with everything Tony says as a beloved BC broadcaster with CBC Vancouver and CHEK News, his written words will also resonate with you, as he tells of his experiences and often humorous tales about life on Vancouver Island. In this premier segment on page 128, Tony shares how he came to live in Victoria and the many reasons why he stayed.

H&L’s summer feature home on page 32, Eden by Città Group, nestled in prestigious Rockland, exemplifies quality construction of an architecturally contemporary home with an aesthetically stunning West Coast exterior. Eden’s imaginative interior boasts decidedly clean lines, a jaw dropping floating staircase and an enviable rooftop terrace. A Pacific Coast State of Mind on page 108 is a whale of a tale, following a 3-day H&L adventure to Tofino and Ucluelet. My special thanks to the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, Jamie’s Whaling Station, Matterson House and Relic Surf Shop for providing the individual components that added up to one unforgettable trip. Whether your goal this summer is as grand as commissioning a custom built home, or as practical as refinishing your vintage dining room table, my hope is that you will find inspiration within the pages of our summer issue to set your project plans in motion. White Night For a more interesting space, use an assortment of white shades

20

It’s not often that my clients request an all-white room, but that’s just what Jasmine asked Jane Lockhart Interior Design to help her with in her bedroom. She explained how she struggled on her own to find just the right white paint colour for her bedroom walls adding that white and light natural colours calm and relax her so a white scheme would be the best colour scheme for her bedroom and would brighten the space for the summer months!

White is the hardest colour to choose from a paint chip

sUMMER 2011

Other natural fabrics were used throughout the room to maintain the calm and peaceful mood of the room. Lined in lightweight muslin, natural linen drapery panels in a pale neutral shade cover the five windows in this corner room and provide protection from the sun.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

A small existing settee was reupholstered in natural bamboo fabric in warm, sandy beige to blend seamlessly with the floor. This material is highly durable, sustainable and comes in multiple colours to add a further natural element. A cowhide ottoman was placed with the loveseat to create contrast of pattern and texture.

22

Natural fabrics were used to maintain the room’s calm & peaceful mood

WHITE NIGHT |

Choosing the Right White Contrary to popular belief, ‘white’ is a colour when talking about pigments. It is simply the lightest value or tint of any colour family. Basically all the strong or bright colours we can think of have a really dark version or really light version of them. So bright red, for example, is rich burgundy when we think of it as a deep shade and light, soft pink—almost white, when we think of this red in the light colour spectrum. So no “white” is just white….it’s a tone of whatever colour it began as. That’s why white is truly the hardest colour to select from a small paint chip! To really see the tone of white you have selected, it needs to be applied to a large area so that you’re able to pick up its subtle differences.

To Left: Fresh white linens and warm white upholstery and drapery fabrics complement the rich natural wood tones in the room. To Right: Crisp white mixed with natural tones and textures instantly refresh a room’s tired décor.

sUMMER 2011

Jasmine had tried many options of white and found they all looked different from the chip once painted on the wall, and the names of the colours were no help either (never trust the name of a paint chip!). So to calm Jasmine, we looked at a series of light natural colours inspired by nature. Natural elements like birch-bark, sand, white marble, and lichen were collected to create a palette of colours from which she could choose. From the palette she eventually chose a soft white with a hint of grey-green for the walls. This was an excellent choice to subdue the yellow tone prominent in the blonde hardwood flooring. This wall colour looks fabulous against her simple dark brown sleigh bed and side tables. Crisp white cotton bed linens and a few toss pillows in a textured white fabric dress the bed for a simple and peaceful look.

CLIENT: VICTORIA SPECIALITY HARDWARE & PLUMBING PUBLICATION: VICTORIA HOMES & LIVING

23

| WHITE NIGHT

Finally, the pieces that really make this a peaceful space are the addition of natural accessories like decorative wicker balls, beeswax candles, a jute and wool rug and uniquely shaped driftwood logs. Jasmine’s traditional ornate gold wall mirror was spraypainted white to suite the tone-on-tone nature of the room.

Need more space?

Locally made, quality-Controlled. Murphy Wall-Beds guarantees your bed is made with top-quality cabinetry, carefully matching grains, and the best in hardware, ensuring you a lifetime warranty. We can also create custom cabinetry for entertainment centres and storage. The island’s authentic Murphy bed dealer for over 20 years.

Tip: When doing a “white” room, remember that not all the shades and tints of white will match. That’s exactly the point of a natural colour palette. The subtle variations of light colours that blend seamlessly into the next will offer dimension to the room. It is important to ensure there is plenty of texture within each of the light shades to ensure the space stays interesting and warm. Jasmine loves her serene, soft and neutral bedroom and admits that white is still her favourite colour but has learned that mixing a variety of natural whites makes a much more interesting space. It’s now a peaceful, relaxing, easy and breezy space exactly what Jasmine had pictured in her night time dreams!

Inside—Out 2 Ways to Update Your Outdoor Living Space By Daru Dhillon

Outdoor living spaces are a mainstay for many of us who enjoy spending summers at home in the great outdoors. As Vancouver Island homeowners continue to create outdoor kitchens, alfresco dining rooms and living areas, we are pushing our living spaces from inside—out.

Glass and light both create a sense of clarity and transparency, extending visibility into our surroundings--ideal for beautiful homes situated on the stunning West Coast.

sUMMER 2011

The evolution of modern furniture, designer fabrics and all-weather accessories continues to fuel the demand towards stylish outdoor retreats. Updating your own outdoor space can be as easy as focusing on two key components: lighting and glass railings.

27

| inside—out

Clearly Coastal Clear, sleek and sophisticated…glass is clearly in a class of its own! Maximizing our connection to our landscapes, the use of modern glass railings is becoming de rigueur in exterior renovations.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Replacing existing wood or metal railings with modern glass opens up exterior spaces, creating unobstructed views from both inside and out. The openness suspends the boundaries of everyday living, commanding spectacular uninterrupted views of our natural landscape: the ocean, mountains and open sky.

28

Left Page Image: H&L’s Spring 2010 Feature Home ‘the Radius’ by Abstract Developments. Glass railings installed by Excalabor Glass & Aluminum.

Innovation and Craftsmanship In the past, exterior railings were often overlooked components of home design, seen more for their function than form, but that has changed. Innovative design and skilled craftsmen are giving homeowners greater choice in railing systems, transforming their decks, patios, pools and beyond. The translucent quality of glass has an added benefit over traditional railings - serving as a windbreak - perfect for homes situated near the water’s edge. For homeowners looking to customize railings to complement their style of home, a wide variety of colours and glosses are available. Fabricated in aluminum, powder-coated finishes remain popular and provide an easy-to-clean option in a semi-gloss finish. Anodized finishes in clear, bronze and black are more expensive but are longer lasting.

inside—out |

Design Postless/topless railing systems eliminate the horizontal line of the top-rail. Fabricated in aluminum with stainless steel fasteners, glass panels are safely secured using attractive hardware like channel base shoe systems. The contemporary design is an elegant choice that features prominently in new custom homes and renovations. All-glass railing systems are all in the details! Removing rails and posts altogether; these frameless anchoring systems are the ultimate in transparency. Light and modern in design, glass panels are secured using large stainless steel bolts and rods that can be fastened to wood or concrete. The lightness of design is counterbalanced with the industrial strength of stainless steel fasteners.

When selecting lighting, consider the architectural style of your home. Fixtures that complement the home’s design will enhance existing architecture for a harmonious look.

Focal Points Replacing outdated lighting with new stylish fixtures is an easy and cost-effective update. If your current lighting plan consists of a single light above the porch or patio, hiring an electrician to install additional fixtures will make your outdoor areas come into focus, in the right light. Consider your main focal points and how much lighting is required for dining, reading or other activities. Elegant pendants, chandeliers and lanterns can add instant drama; while strategically placed contemporary sconces on stone columns cast a warm subtle glow, inviting you poolside. Installing a series of recessed lighting in soffits and ceilings is especially attractive if you have a long front porch and can be achieved using energy efficient lighting options. Finish Exterior lighting has come of age offering greater selection, quality finishes and superior styles to complement your home. Wall-mount lanterns or sconces remain popular though contemporary varieties are slightly more elongated than in the past. Available in a wide variety of finishes like sleek white satin or graphic black, metallic finishes in: copper, bronze, silver and titanium are prominent features on many wellbuilt homes. From traditional, transitional to contemporary, lanterns look particularly striking in symmetrical installations flanking exterior doors or entranceways.

Light Up the Night!

Great lighting is also key to making the most of your exterior space. As homeowners look to expand their living spaces outdoors, custom homebuilders have responded by incorporating exterior lighting plans into design plans. Enveloping our surroundings in soft warm light…well into the night!

When selecting lighting, consider the architectural style of your home. Fixtures that complement the home’s design will enhance existing architecture for a harmonious look. While juxtaposing styles can be dramatic, when done right, it’s often tricky to get right. When in doubt, consult a knowledgeable lighting specialist to help guide you.

Eden is a custom home that took Città Group eleven months to complete. The finished product is a multilevel residence in a distinctive West Coast style, expertly designed on the vertical, to make best use

of the narrow 50-foot lot. The interior features 4,077 square feet on three floors of sundrenched living space, which boasts 4 bedrooms, den, 5 bathrooms, open concept great room with kitchen, dining and living spaces, games room and media room. The floor plan also features a fabulous rooftop terrace, two full laundry rooms and a double car garage. The exterior was crafted from coloured concrete, metal and cedar with an abundance of oversized windows to take advantage of the city and mountain views. “Outdoor living spaces were a high priority for the client”, says Mike Dalton, Città Construction Manager, “along with his desire to build in a mature, established neighbourhood.” Working closely with LADR Landscape Architects, the 9,000 square

foot Rockland lot was transformed into a visually stunning, yet low maintenance rocky garden space. With four distinct outdoor areas, and in keeping with the style of the home, Eden’s exterior was designed front, back and rooftop, for entertaining. Eden is also proudly green, receiving an impressive Energuide rating of 85, and a Built Green Platinum Rating, the highest rating awarded by BuiltGreen™. This splendid home, which also features a water conservation system and eco-advanced forced air heating, offers all the luxuries of a well-appointed residence, without the carbon footprint of a regular home. Città Group understands the importance of building an eco-friendly home without sacrificing style, and it shows.

On one of Rockland’s picturesque streets, walking up the front pathway to Eden; it is immediately apparent that contemporary paradise lies on the other side of the massive 5-foot wide door that was handcrafted by this home’s custom builder, Città Group, which includes Città Construction and Città Interiors. The house might be named after the homeowner, Norm Eden, but the property lives up to the biblical origin of its name as well, with no shortage of tasteful, utopian elements, inside and out.

Deborah Patterson, Città Interiors, manages the interior design and décor of all Città Group homes, including Eden. Deborah designs from the floor up. “I start with the flooring and then everything else comes from the floor.” The owner of the home, Norm Eden, wanted black slate instead of hardwood floors, with dreams of adopting a black Labrador once the house was complete. So, in essence, the initial interior design plans evolved around the needs of a big, black dog. In the end, the canine who moved in with Norm was a cute little Shih Tzu, who still benefits from the maintenance-free flooring and doggy shower station in the garage.

The foyer is simply awe-inspiring. The ceiling soars to sixteen feet above the front door, and seems like it could continue upwards forever, if not for the anchoring effect cleverly achieved by the textured composite drywall ceiling, painted in dark contrasting waves and fabulous McLaren lighting fixtures. The builder did an exceptional job using the ceiling heights to draw your eye up the magnificent staircase which is the showstopper in this home. The staircase covers all three levels, rising up to the roof terrace. Deborah Patterson confirmed that to successfully create this stairway to heaven, “it was all about layering textures together”. Words just cannot do it justice; stylized metal risers act as floating supports for chunky, stair treads made from lacquered gluelam timber beams set against clear, chic glass panels and crowned with polished metal handrails and hardware.

36

The main floor living zone features a back wall of floor-toceiling glass that leads out into the professionally decked and landscaped backyard, and acts as a common element that harmoniously joins the kitchen, dining room and living room. A cozy living space with fireplace moves seamlessly into the cooking and eating areas – the heart of this casually elegant home. The dining room is graceful yet unassuming with a large dinner party sized handcrafted dining set, just an arm’s length from the full size stainless steel wine fridge. The kitchen features spectacular dark stained walnut cabinetry made in-house by Città Construction, who take great pride in creating all of their own millwork for clients. With upper inset diffused laminated glass doors that break up the dark woods, complimented by the industrial styled stainless steel backsplash, the combination of rich wood, misty glass and polished metal creates a crisp, strikingly modern space that is surprising soft edged. The long island is a long, sleek and decidedly sexy focal point of the open plan kitchen; its custom

McLaren Lighting is renowned for unique, artistic and stunning light fixtures. The Eden’s fantastic floating staircase is a perfect example of how lighting adds dramatic emphasis to a home design element.

Perched on a hilltop, ‘SilverStone’ boasts expansive views of the Strait of Georgia, Mount Baker and the Olympic Mountains. Located on a 2,207-square-metre property, the three-storey home boasts 604 square metres of living space; all interior walls were removed in the renovation. The home features two 79-square-metre subterranean garages, each of which holds four vehicles. To accommodate the garages, Miller and his team lifted the house, supported it with beams and carved out the rock underneath.

At the front of the property, Duane Ensing Landscape Design manipulated the steep driveway in order to bring the grade down and create a more open space. (The driveway is now heated thanks to Gorge Electrical Services, which provided all electrical work on the property.) From here, a staircase meanders through a garden to the charming front porch; extensive West Coast-style rockwork provides continuity between the garden and exterior of the home. Sandy Nygaard of Nygaard Interior Design echoes Miller’s statements. “We tried to pay homage to the era of the house with a contemporary take on it,” she says. “It’s nice to juxtapose the two styles.” The designer—who lent her expertise to Victoria Homes & Living’s fall feature home, the ‘Touchstone’—incorporated an earthy colour palette, elegant mouldings, traditional paneling, rich millwork and chic finishing materials, including tiles, handles, knobs and door hardware.

The lower level of Eden was designed to accommodate an extended family with grown, independent children. The space features a powder room, media room with massive TV, games room with an entertainment style kitchen area, fourth bedroom, full bathroom, laundry room and a walk-in wine closet. The bathroom features locally quarried marbled by Matrix marble on Vancouver Island. It doesn’t feel like it is below ground level at all; the windows in the bedroom are very large, the rooms are bright and airy, and there are oversized doors leading out to a private terrace, complete with hot tub and soothing waterfall. Obvious care was taken with the interior design and décor elements of this home. Most of the furnishings came from Luxe Home Interiors, known for their upscale yet classically styled furniture. Each piece chosen was perfectly suited; there was nothing out of place, but there were a few standout design elements.

The artwork in the home is befitting the style and personality of the residence. In fact, the playfulness of the art pieces, offered up in brilliant colours and abstract form, add a warmth and vitality to the rooms they adorn. One of the artists, Taryn Brown, created nine custom pieces for Eden, two of which are named Wave to Me and That Special Something. “My art is full of energy with a focus on colour and its movement. What I want to capture in my art is not an accurate portrayal of the subject, but the energy and dynamism of the subject.” Ms. Brown’s artistic instinct is amazingly in sync with everything about the house; designed in contemporary West Coast style but with its own definitive interpretation.

Eden, built with care, integrity and collaboration, lives harmoniously within a beloved, traditional enclave such as Rockland. Eden truly is reaching out to the future with its foundation rooted firmly in Victoria’s past.

The builder used Fir wood throughout much of the home, from the substantial pivoted front door and the interior doors, and right down to the window trim and baseboards. This satiny, bright wood, deliberately crafted by the builders in clean, simple lines adds an upscale minimalist element to the house. In certain rooms, sliding doors of fir and diffused glass were used, offering up a modern take on traditional Japanese shoji doors. This smart design element is space saving while adding visual interest to the various spaces in Eden.

“There’s nothing overly complicated about this house” says Bill Patterson, President of Città Group, “I love building simplicity and that is what this house is”. Deborah Patterson concurred, finishing the thought, “It is simplistically perfect”. Città Group is a close-knit company who works together as a team; an ensemble that takes collaborative credit and pride for every custom built home. Superior design sense and immaculate execution are the hallmarks of Città Group, who consistently infuse award winning innovation and quality craftsmanship into every project. Bill Patterson explains: “We listen very carefully to an owner – what their dream is, what they imagine for their new home. We are interpreting what a homeowner sees themselves living in.” Perhaps that unified focus, and their commitment to the visions of the client, explains their many gold CARE awards and custom homebuilder success.

The meticulous planning of Eden by Città Group, a home that is affordably accessible for many homeowners, exemplifies how modern design, when executed with care, integrity and collaboration, can live harmoniously within a beloved, traditional enclave such as Rockland. Eden truly is reaching out to the future with its foundation rooted firmly in Victoria’s past.

Homeowner Norm Eden revels in the look of his finished home. “The interior and exterior were exactly what I wanted, and I am pleased with how things worked out. CITY ESCAPE: DATE NIGHT AT THE MAGNOLIA |

Nowadays, we all work harder and play less. Vacations used to be a yearly luxury, but in today’s world, it should be a more frequent necessity. A week away in Hawaii may not always be affordable, or two weeks abroad might not be doable time wise… H&L’s new feature series shows you how to experience a short weekend vacation in your own backyard.

City Escape Date Night at The Magnolia By Tracey Drake There is a famous Spanish proverb that says, “How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then to rest afterward”. On a recent weekend city escape to The Magnolia Hotel, Spa and Prime Steakhouse in downtown Victoria; my husband Steve and I had the opportunity to put this adage to the test and guess what? It’s true! We opted for the Date Night package, which caters to couples that want to relax and reconnect. The hotel offers different package versions, which can be further personalized. Our customized getaway included one night accommodation in an exquisite diamond hotel suite, an unforgettable dinner at Prime Steakhouse, and tranquil time spent at The Spa Magnolia. Walking through the front doors of The Magnolia Hotel, the warm welcome from the staff and delightful elegance of the hotel lobby provided the first clue that this weekend would be the perfect distraction from our hectic lifestyle. With just 64 rooms, The Magnolia Hotel is ideally sized to offer unsurpassed personal attention and 4-diamond hotel amenities. The architectural styling and interior design of the property represents all things that are unique about Victoria – an obvious nod to the past with an infusion of old world charm, but with no modern convenience overlooked. The 12year old luxury boutique hotel was a new build that was designed to blend in with the historic, old town district – which earned the VREB’s ‘Commercial Building Award for Excellence’.

Our corner room on the seventh floor featured soaring 10 foot ceilings; a fresh, stylish decor and awe-inspiring vistas of downtown Victoria, the inner harbour and parliament buildings. Complimentary fresh apples and bottled water provided a quick late afternoon snack; a decadent chocolate left on each pillow after evening turndown service was a thoughtful touch. The room featured a two poster bed with beautiful high end linens, and a large sitting area with loveseat and romantic gas fireplace. As for the spa inspired bathroom, it was so decadent, I could have easily spent the weekend in the wellappointed marble haven with soaker tub and separate glass enclosed shower – and I am not the only one. Ronette Nyhan, Director of Sales for The Magnolia Hotel & Spa, told us about a guest who reserved this room for his wedding anniversary, and asked if the hotel could set up the bathroom for his wife – exactly like the picture – and they did!

Later that evening, dining at Prime Steakhouse, the only restaurant in Victoria on Where Magazine’s list of ‘Canada’s Best New Restaurants of 2010’ was nothing short of magnificent. The rich décor and relaxed atmosphere was welcoming yet vibrant; cozy yet cosmopolitan – to my mind, it was vintage rat pack meets modern urban chic. We were seated at the ‘parliament’ table with stunning outlooks to the government buildings and the harbour; views that changed from architectural awe to a romantic glow, as the sun set over the city. The table service was attentive and professional, thanks to our server, Andrew who was knowledgeable about every item on the menu that includes six cuts of aged beef, as well as lamb, seafood, poultry and pasta. We chose Sesame Crusted Tuna and Lobster Bisque as starters, and both were sumptuous. For our main course, we dined on Lamb Rack with an herb crusted red wine jus and juniper gastrique, which was rustically divine; and Dry Aged Bone-in NY

Steak that was cooked evenly to medium-rare perfection; an often difficult feat with a thick, 17 oz. cut of beef. After touring the kitchen with Chef Bruce Batty, it was easy to see why Prime consistently serves up world class cuisine. Chef Batty attributes the mouth-watering flavour and tenderness of Prime steaks to their in-house dry aging system and his kitchen’s Montague overfired broiler, which locks in the brilliant flavours with a crisp crust. Since Prime’s entrée portions are generous, we wisely chose to share the molten cake for dessert; a warm, flowing, chocolate celebration that was worth every second of the 12 minute, made-to-order, baking time – and the sweetest end to a splendid day. After an early Sunday morning walk around the inner harbour and a delicious complimentary breakfast that, along with the usual continental breakfast fare, included a Belgian waffle station and gourmet oatmeal counter, we headed to the spa.

The Spa Magnolia is a rare indulgence for all the senses that feels like it is worlds away, even though it is conveniently located right off the hotel lobby. Walking into the spa reception area, we were instantly enveloped in a sea of serenity; this spa has done an admirable job getting the mood just right. After changing into soft robes and slippers, we were escorted to the lounge by Paula Veenema, Spa Director, where we waited for our spa therapists; Macayla and Heather, to begin our couples massage. This is one of the best couple suites I have come across; the room was spacious and warm; the massage tables angled at either end to allow lots of room for two therapists to move around in stealth mode. There was nothing crowded or contrived about this space – it is a sanctuary built with the couple in mind. The Spa Magnolia features seven treatment rooms, an expertly trained staff and an elegant street entrance that offers day spa services for Victoria residents. The one-hour couple massage was our happy ending to a wonderful urban retreat.

Vacationing in your own backyard is an eye opening experience – we truly felt like we had ‘gotten away from it all’ while still taking the time to appreciate our own city. It is funny that in all my walks downtown, I never noticed the stunning architectural façade of the Union Club. Or how, at 8am on a Sunday morning, the inner harbour shows its peaceful, softer, non-touristy side; the only sounds coming from the boats gently moving in the waters and the occasional squawk of a resident seagull.

Living Teak Furniture Withstands the Tests of Time By Renee Guidolin

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Naturally attractive, low maintenance and mellow: all perfectly apt words that can be used to describe our wonderful West Coast lifestyle. So, how appropriate it is that the most appreciated material chosen for quality outdoor furniture by the most discerning homeowners is exotic and durable Teak. Thanks to the unsurpassed density of the wood and rich natural oils contained within, teak can effortlessly —and indefinitely—withstand the ravages of water, sun, and continuous outdoor exposure while developing a deepening patina with the passing seasons.

52

Depending on the care and attention given to your teak furniture, time will gently alter the wood hue to a warm, golden honey or an elegant, silvery grey. The moderate climate on Vancouver Island affords us ample time to appreciate the outdoors. That probably explains why teak is one of the most popular choices for outdoor furniture pieces. Favourites include dining sets, benches, steamer chairs, chaise loungers, patio umbrellas, and of course, the iconic Canadian summer classic: the Adirondack.

Indigenous to Southeast Asia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Myanmar, the deciduous Tectona grandis is also cultivated on plantations in other parts of the world: Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America. Due to growing ecological awareness of the need for renewable cultivation and harvesting methods, sustainable plantations in these locations are accountable to the Forest Stewardship Council—an international notfor-profit organization that is devoted to promoting responsible forest care, as well as diligently monitoring standards and certification of forest products. For the discriminating homeowner looking for the ultimate outdoor dining set for twilight gatherings or a classically comfortable chaise lounge for poolside reading, consumers who become educated about the varying grades of teak wood will be rewarded with investment teak pieces that offer tremendous value, longevity, and satisfaction.

The most desirable of all teak woods, Grade A teak is carefully extracted from the heart of the trunk, which possesses the greatest concentration of essential oil. Additionally, Grade A teak is infused with more natural rubber and silica than any other grade, providing superior resistance to damage from water and insects. It is in this part of the tree that there are fewer knots, causing the colour and texture to be most consistent—and it is here at the heart that a deeper hue is found. Grade B teak is also considered to be desirable, and is generally accepted as a fine grade for furniture. This grade is cultivated from the outer layer of the tree’s heart, and still possesses consistency in the hue, few knots, and some naturally occurring oils.

Although it is very important to understand the different grades of Teak to make an informed purchase, maintenance of this hardy wood is minimal and requires very little care, depending on your choice of patina.

To encourage a weathered, silver patina, teak furniture should be left to the elements and occasionally scrubbed with soapy water to remove any accumulated dirt. Leaving your teak untouched will give you a charming weathered look within the first year.

To maintain a darker or honey-toned shade, teak sealer will preserve the natural colour, and will protect the wood from mold, mildew and sun damage. It is worth noting that sealer is not to be confused with varnish. The ultimate purpose of sealer is to provide a breathable method of preserving the colour of the wood, acting as both a protectant and a stain.

The Building of Cary Castle: The First Government House

Government House is the third to grace the site, the previous two having burned. Those who lived in the city before 1957 may remember the second Government House, or at least the conflagration that destroyed it. However, no one alive in Victoria now will have a personal memory of the first Government House that stood for nearly forty years before it was destroyed in 1899. The original was called Cary Castle and the story of how it was built and the trials and tribulations of its renovations and upkeep over the years provide an excellent case study for home builders today.

“Let him who buildeth a tower first count the cost thereof”

Location! Location! Location! That is why George Hunter Cary, Attorney General for the Colony of Vancouver Island, chose the site in 1860. The vistas on a clear day over the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains are superb. Sir James Douglas owned the land. Though he was reluctant to sell, he was quite willing to lease portions to farmers or people who wanted to build country houses. The lease that Cary secured was unusual because it was “forever.” Cary was an eccentric individual who seemed to lack sound judgment. Perhaps his desire to own a castle illustrates one contemporary’s opinion that Cary was shallow and conceited “beyond belief.” Dr. John S. Helmcken wrote that Cary took it into his head to build a small castle after he had made some money. The doctor’s sage observations might well apply to many building projects today. “Let him who buildeth a tower first count the cost thereof,” Helmcken warned.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Cary soon discovered that building materials were expensive and the price of labour was very high, “so he satisfied himself in the end with a wing.” Cary’s finances and health began to deteriorate. “Poor fellow in the end … became insane,” noted Helmcken, “and had to be sent home where the doctors said he had paralysis of the brain.” Cary died in 1865.

The castle was purchased by a neighbour, Mrs. Elizabeth Miles, who named it “Stoneleigh.” Her tenure was brief because she sold it in April 1865 to Arthur Edward Kennedy who had replaced James Douglas as Governor of Vancouver Island. The House of Assembly had voted on $50,000 to build a new residence for the governor, but he grew impatient waiting and took matters into his own hands, using $19,000 of the appropriation for the unfinished house. The move was not universally popular, but the deal stood.

Renovating and furnishing Cary Castle was necessary before Kennedy moved in. Wright and Sanders, architects, drew up the plans. Tenders came in much higher than anticipated and some of the additions were deleted. Wood frame construction was used instead of stone and brick. Work was delayed, but after it was finished, Kennedy enjoyed only one year in Cary Castle before he was recalled. For a two year period the capital moved to New Westminster, but returned to Victoria in 1868. By then, Cary Castle was in bad condition. The renovations made by Kennedy were done on the cheap and soon showed. Barely two years had passed and the old building leaked so badly a large portion had to be pulled down and reconstructed. Repairs were ongoing and by 1872, it was estimated about $100,000 had been spent on the place over the previous eight years, but that the market value was only $15,000. To make matters worse, woodpeckers and rats were destroying the plastered walls. That same year a fire destroyed the coachman’s quarters and stables. They were insured and were rebuilt almost immediately, now being the oldest surviving structures on the Government House estate.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Government cutbacks through the late 1800s gradually saw Cary Castle deteriorate more and more, prompting Lieutenant Governor Richards in the late 1870s to threaten to move out. Repairs were made in time for Princess Louise and her husband, the Marquis of Lorne (then Governor General) to pay an extended visit in 1882. The daughter of Queen Victoria was suitably impressed enough to describe Cary Castle as “halfway between heaven and Balmoral.”

62

Tragedy struck on May 18, 1899, when Cary Castle was destroyed by fire, fanned by a stiff southwesterly. The firemen who tried to save the old pile were not surprised. They had been there at least seven times before. The place was insured for only $8,000 and the furnishings for $4,000, even though the actual value was much higher. The Colonist summed up local feeling: “Although a new Government House had long been needed, it seems hard to part with the old one.”

By 1872, approximately $100,000 had been spent on repairs and renovations – but the market value of Cary Castle was just $15,000

A Window of Opportunity Window coverings that protect interior décor By Ben Vorst

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Everybody wants a house that lets in copious amounts of natural light – it’s warm, inviting and shows off design in ways we cannot artificially duplicate – but how to protect the precious artwork and investment furnishings that make it a home? What about the summer months, when southern exposure can turn a living room into a sauna and send the electrical bill skyrocketing?

64

Striking a balance between a cozy, sun-drenched atmosphere and maintaining the newness of design elements can be a challenge; luckily, advances in window coverings have made it easier. The need for protection from excessive heat and damage from UV (ultra-violet) rays will depend on the age and design of the windows (single, double, or triple-glazed), the accessories in need of preservation (rugs or Rembrandts), and budgetary considerations.

Industry trends include motorized and automated window coverings

65

| a window of opportunity

Retro-fitting of window coverings has exploded in recent years: several new technologies, and some rediscovered ones, have become popular for keeping homes cool throughout the sunny B.C. seasons. New materials are more resistant to the sun’s harsh effects, allowing for comfortable living spaces that maintain their fantastic views. Increased awareness of energy-efficiency has driven interest in options for reducing electricity usage, as well as having spurred a growth in light-diffusing window solutions.

Drapery Never Goes Out of Vogue Some old technologies are still with us for a reason: well-made drapes are still a great option for keeping out the sun and help maintain the intensity of colours inside. Velvet is making a strong comeback in interior design, and is effective in heat control and light blocking. However, any drapery weight fabric will do the trick; offering an endless array of colour and pattern choices.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Drapes can now be enhanced with special backings (making them blackout drapes), a tightly-woven lining which reduces light conveyance to nearly nothing. With all drapes and curtains, ensuring that they overlap at the centre will provide the best coverage and insulation.

66

One of the disadvantages of draperies is that it is all or nothing – roomful sunlight when the drapes are open and no natural light when the drapes are closed. Also, keep in mind that drapes can deteriorate after long-term UV exposure. Sheer curtains (or privacy curtains) allow a lot of light through, and therefore offer little in the way of sun-blocking ability.

Shutters and Blinds are West Coast Favourites

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Louvered shutters are among the most flexible window accessories. The adjustment of the louvers allows just the right amount of light into an interior space, depending on the time of day, and the classic design has never lost its appeal to West Coast homeowners over the years. Available in vinyl, aluminum and composites, the newer models of shutters tend to last longer than their wooden forebears.

68

Window blinds, both vertical and horizontal, offer excellent protection from the sun when fully closed, and are relatively affordable. Attractive alternatives to fabric and aluminum (think bamboo, wood-slat, and exotic looking faux woods) are widely used in spaces that

incorporate natural design elements. As with shutters, the adjustability of blinds is attractive; however, open blinds leave interiors unprotected. Sheer blinds, which combine traditional blinds with a translucent fabric backing, can offer a little resistance to the sun, but UV-rated models are rare. For maximum heat protection from blinds, cellular (or honeycomb) blinds are the optimal choice. Although visibility is sacrificed, cellular blinds can filter out the majority of UV rays while allowing some light to pass through. They offer excellent insulation, despite being lightweight: their hexagonal design creates air pockets, forming a substantial barrier to heat.

New technologies and tried-and-true favourites keep up our vitamin D intake, keep down air conditioning costs and keep inviting spaces full of vibrant colour Above: Image provided by Ruffell and Brown Interiors; Sheer screen roller shades offer visibility to the outdoors while diminishing the solar heat that enters through windows. Solar Screens & Shades Window shades have come a long way from the office models of yesteryear. While the springloaded mechanisms are still available, newer shades work on manual clutch, crank, and motorized systems, all of which leave less to chance and dexterity. More importantly, shade materials are now far more insulating, keeping out the bulk of the heat and almost all UV rays. PVC-coated mesh fabrics are lightweight and durable, providing a long-term solution offering an unmatched level of visibility, while providing privacy from the outside. That breathtaking view that drew you to the property in the first place can still be enjoyed, without risk of sun exposure.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The H a u nt i ng a t

72

Is it really a ghost on the stairway, or just trick photography? When photographer Susannah Nixon visited the Maritime Museum the oft seen ghost did not make his appearance. Her husband, Chris Adams (son of the author), obligingly donned his frock coat and cape to stand in for Sir Matthew’s spectral form. But the real ghost has been seen on many occasions.

the Maritime Museum By John Adams

The haunting at the maritime museum |

Bastion Square, one of Victoria’s fascinating historical enclaves, is the centre of considerable spectral activity. Much of the ghost lore specifically relates to the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, which is located in a distinctive heritage building. When it was constructed as the Supreme Court in 1889 it was British Columbia’s first reinforced concrete building.

Chief Justice Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie once presided over the courtroom; now restored on the third floor of the museum. Historians dispute whether he deserves the often-used moniker “hanging judge,” but agree on the fact that his stern lectures could send terror into the hearts of even the most hardened criminals and, on occasion, hapless jurors. The courtroom is complete with prisoner’s dock and outline of the trap door that led to the holding cells below. Some say that Sir Matthew’s ghost is still present and can be heard banging the desk with his fist, as he was known to do when angry. He is also sometimes seen on the creaking stairway, gliding silently in his black judicial robes, or felt as a cold, invisible presence.

Gruesome public hangings and disturbed graves are likely reasons why Maritime Museum is haunted

73

| The haunting at the maritime museum

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Those who take the Maritime Museum’s antique cage elevator (the oldest operating elevator in British Columbia) to the upper floors are likely to encounter another judge who reputedly haunts the elevator itself. This is thought to be Theodore Davie whose doctors advised him not to climb stairs. The elevator was installed around 1901 partly for his benefit, but he died before installation was complete. Is it his spirit which occasionally pushes occupants of the lift against its grillwork walls?

74

Staff and visitors at the Maritime Museum have reported other unexplained phenomena, including poltergeists which are mischievous and sometimes malevolent spirits or energy characterized by noises, moving objects and general physical disturbances, sometimes associated with the invisible ghosts of young children. Apart from the creaking and groaning you would expect to find in an old building (even one made of concrete) there really is no logical reason for what used to happen to the telephones for a period of time in the 1990s. At night when the building was deserted except for a lone staff member working late, the indicator lights on the telephones came on by themselves, even though the only physical cause should have been when someone picked up one of the phones in another office. But no one else was there, at least no one who could be seen.

The gift shop, just inside the main entrance to the museum, has seen its share of odd happenings. One new staff member had heard about the hauntings in the building, but paid the stories little heed until she had occasion to enter the gift shop to meet someone else. While she waited, something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye. When she turned to look, she saw a stack of sailor hats (one of the popular gift shop sales items) rise up, seemingly lifted by an invisible hand, and float out into the middle of the room, then drop, almost at her feet! She needed no more convincing that there was something credible in the tales she had been hearing. In recent years, glass ship’s models for sale in the shop have also been known to fly off the shelves and smash to pieces on the hard floor.

76

It is popularly believed that one of the primary reasons for paranormal activity in the Maritime Museum is due to what had been in that location previously. In 1858 the quiet life at Fort Victoria was broken by the arrival from San Francisco of tens of thousands of adventurers who had heard about gold on the Fraser River. Victoria became their supply centre and jumping off point to the gold fields and experienced a tremendous building boom. Stores and

The haunting at the maritime museum |

houses sprang up almost overnight in Bastion Square and around the old Hudson’s Bay Company fort. One of the first public buildings needed was a jail. The site selected was exactly where the Maritime Museum is now.

When the old jail was torn down in the 1880s, the corpses beneath were not removed. Evermore, the disturbed remains will be mixed with the stone foundations of the new Supreme Court building

The old jail had a formidable appearance, rather like a crenulated castle. Around the north and east sides ran a tall wall enclosing a compound where the inmates used to take exercise and where gallows occasionally were built. During the 1860s, hangings were public spectacles and large crowds of morbid curiosity seekers gathered at dawn to witness the grisly deeds. Once the bodies were dead, families could claim them if they wanted to. However, many of the victims reputedly had no one to bury them, so the jailer did it himself, underneath the gallows in unmarked graves. When the old jail was pulled down in the 1880s, no one bothered to move the corpses. Their bones were just mingled into the concrete and stone foundations of the new Supreme Court building. If any explanation for the hauntings in the Maritime Museum is needed, the hangings and disturbed graves provide plenty of possibilities. A visit to the Maritime Museum is always a pleasurable experience for lovers of history and tales of the sea. It is also a favourite place for ghost hunters to test their skills. A Soft Place to Land How to Choose Quality Upholstered Furniture

HLMAGAZINE.COM

By Michelle Hopkins

78

Flipping through a design magazine or watching a decorating show on television can inspire you to want to redecorate your home. Often, one of the first pieces we like to change is also one of the most expensive – we are talking about quality upholstered – investment pieces like a sofa or set of club chairs. The truth is that most of us have limited knowledge about furniture construction or quality. When you are considering buying an upholstered piece of furniture, its true merits, in terms of cost and wearability, are veiled under layers of fabric, stuffing, springs and wood frame.

Construction is one of the most important aspects in any furniture buying decision. A good quality sofa frame is made of 100 per cent hardwood, such as oak, ash, birch or maple. A lower-quality sofa will typically be made with a light-weight particle board or pine, which won’t last as long. High end furniture galleries have knowledgeable staff on hand to help you make an informed decision. Don’t be afraid to ask about the materials used in the frame construction or about the history of the manufacturer.

Homes & Living Magazine takes the work out of buying long lasting but contemporary upholstered furniture for you by highlighting some of what we gleaned from experts in the industry. All aspiring journalists are taught to ask the five Ws – who, what, where, when and why when writing about anything. It also is a very smart way to approach the purchase of your next piece of upholstered furniture.

sUMMER 2011

If you purchase a quality sofa, chaise or set of occasional chairs that are well constructed; the right size, colour, shape and texture, you will love it for many years to come.

Who is going to use the sofa? If you have little children and/or pets in the house you are going to want a durable and stain resistant fabric. What are your expectations? Is it a long term investment or a first time purchase for the short term? If you are a first-time homeowner on a tight budget and not overly concerned about the long term then probably a lesser quality couch will do.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Where is the sofa going to be used? Is it going in a more formal setting, such as your living room? If so, you might want to go for a high quality, formal presence. On the other hand, if the furniture is for a family room, den or great room, where it will be subjected to a lot of daily wear, look for a larger sofa or sectional that is as comfortable as it is beautiful.

When is the sofa going to be used – all the time or just occasionally when entertaining? A piece of furniture that’s used during the daytime is likely to be upholstered in a brighter, more functional fabric, or in quality leather upholstery, with easy maintenance as your priority. For nighttime use, more luxurious fabrics such as mohair velvet, silk or damask are the ultimate in elegance. Why it helps to be armed with as much information as possible when you go to buy? Colourful prints add great visual style but work best in larger rooms where there are no patterns or prints that might clash or take over; rooms with complementary soft and light colours. Printed patterns also lend themselves well to larger pieces of furniture, such as sofas or armchairs. Damask and brocades are stunning textiles, but they won’t stand up to the wear and tear of children or pets. For active families, go for closely woven cotton, a linen blend or chintz or leather. If you have a young children, pick out plain, dark colours or patterned fabrics, and find out if the fabric is easy to spot clean or requires machine washing.

Cushion Styling: Sofa cushions are made of foam which comes in soft, medium, or firm and investment pieces are often filled with pure down or feathers. Another alternative is to opt for a combination of the two: foam on top, feathers in the middle and foam on the base.

Multi-functional Furniture: As our living space is shrinking, choosing multifunctional furniture just makes sense. First off, avoid chunky furniture in a small space; multifunctional furniture works and looks much better in small urban rooms. There are so many aesthetically stunning options on the market today; there is no longer a need to settle for boring or bulky.

Celebrity Profile Naturally, Daru Dhillon

The enigmatic television personality returns to CHEK-TV: A natural fit for The Homes & Living Show By Jill Lang

Daru Dhillon grew up on Vancouver Island in much the same way many other native Victorians did in the eighties and nineties: falling asleep at symphonies and hanging around building sites. It’s no surprise, then, that Dhillon — the new host of CHEK-TV’s Homes & Living Show — has an affinity for home and design. Her father worked in the building supply industry for thirty years, and Dhillon spent much of her younger years accompanying him to job sites.

Dhillon spent her childhood recreation hours playing sports with friends in her Gordon Head cul-de-sac. During the more sophisticated hours, she indulged in many of the cultural activities Victoria has to offer, including performing dance at the Royal Theatre and sleeping at the symphony — it didn’t matter if it was past her bedtime.

sUMMER 2011

“My parents have always renovated homes, so it came very natural to me,” Dhillon says. And, she enjoys doing it.

87

| daru dhillon

As a teen, Dhillon played softball in the Western Canadian All-Stars and competed in the Provincial Basketball Championships for Victoria’s Lambrick Park Secondary School. Most activities Dhillon engaged in growing up, in fact, whether artistic or athletic, were team oriented and taught her the value of cooperation, leadership and dedication. This dedication paid off soon after Dhillon enrolled in the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts program at San Francisco State University (SFSU), and swept her way through one of the country’s most esteemed broadcast journalism degrees.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Daru enjoyed living in San Francisco and reflects fondly on the people, culture and cuisine bestowed upon her by the sourdough city. The best part of her university experience; she says, was producing programs with and getting to know her peers from school. Go Team.

Mississauga. Her position on Daytime eventually segued into an anchoring role with the morning show Connected AM on Rogers Sportsnet, and from there, her repertoire grew to include hosting Sportsnet’s national online sports news based segment, the Inbox and appearing on the six o’clock Global Ontario News.

Despite her busy broadcasting life, Daru couldn’t help but dabble in home restoration, a passion and favourite hobby; projects were always on the go or in the works to keep her ‘creating’ juices flowing. A couple of years ago, Dhillon did what she does best, Daru jumped at the opportunity to host and teamed up with brother, Dion, to start a boutique The Homes & Living Show when John restoration and renovation company that specializes in Pollard from CHEK invited her to meet design and project management services.

with producers

After graduating from SFSU in 2002, Dhillon landed her first professional broadcasting gig as a reporter for CHEK-TV’s Go! Magazine. From CHEK, Dhillon’s broadcasting career moved to Toronto, where she spent time as a co-host for the nightly one hour entertainment show Inside Jam! on Sun-TV, and then as a host for the live daily talk show Daytime on Rogers

“We focus on preserving the original character of a home while adding modern amenities and design elements to create elegant living spaces for young professionals,” says Dhillon, who enjoys the thrill of uncovering original Victorian millwork and turning what was once forgotten into a showpiece. “Working alongside my brother has been an incredibly collaborative and rewarding experience. It’s great to have a brother who can teach his sister how to mill her own table — with beautiful results!”

Dhillon renovates houses on Vancouver Island and in Toronto. She splits her time between living by the ocean in peaceful Cordova Bay and living in bustling downtown Toronto, just steps from the shops and restaurants of Queen Street. With her company, Dhillon refurbishes old homes to restore charm and makes dated living spaces functional for today’s modern homeowner. “It’s a perfect fit in that I have a lot of friends with experience renovating homes,” she says. “I always love the group that I work with; we’re professional and prepared, but we’re always having fun.” Teamwork - it’s almost as if home restoration is a sporting event for Dhillon. When she’s not renovating houses on the sports field, Dhillon works as a freelancer for Cineplex and is always looking for excuses to fly home. Daru jumped at the opportunity to host The Homes & Living Show when John Pollard from CHEK invited her to meet with producers. The show is a natural fit for her career and lifestyle, and Daru is thrilled at the opportunity to spend more time ‘at home.’ “Every time I fly into Victoria, there’s a sense of calm in the pace,” Dhillon says. “I always book a one-way ticket home.” The Homes & Living Show on CHEK offers viewers unparalleled access into the finest custom homes and lifestyle amenities on Vancouver Island. Each episode highlights exceptional design, quality craftsmanship and features that set these homes above the rest. Features showcased in the summer episode include a property from Alair Homes in Nanaimo, the awe inspiring amenities at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in Ucluelet, and the latest trends in outdoor furniture and custom millwork. Vancouver Island has many beautiful properties to showcase, Dhillon says. “It should be fun.”

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Aside from spending more time near the ocean and with her family, Dhillon eagerly anticipates shooting each episode, as well as indulging in fun while playing team with the guests and crew of the H&L show. Go Team!

Beginning with this summer issue of Homes & Living magazine, Daru will be writing a regular column on Home Renovation and Restoration. A Taste of Victoria

Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho Elixir, Butter Poached Spot Prawns & Cucumber Basil Granité

Welcome to our newest H&L feature, A Taste of Victoria. In each issue, we showcase one of Victoria’s Top Restaurant Chefs and share one of their own secret recipes, for Homes & Living magazine readers only!

This trio combines to create a great summer dish; perfect for entertaining as all elements can be prepared well in advance. Heirloom tomato gazpacho elixir • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 2 shallots diced • 1 red sweet bell pepper diced • 1 celery stack diced • ¼ teaspoon fennel seeds toasted and crushed • 1 teaspoon smoked sweet paprika • 1 kilo red heirloom tomatoes diced (riper is better) • 250 ml water • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

In medium saucepan, sweat shallots, peppers, celery, and fennel seeds over medium high heat until fragrant with no colour. Add remaining ingredients and cook on medium heat until tomatoes are soft. Remove from heat, blend with hand blender then pass through a medium sieve lined with a paper coffee filter, careful not to press tomatoes through sieve as clarity of this liquid is important. Season with salt as needed this mixture should have a natural tomato flavour, let it shine. Chill in an airtight container until assembly of dish. Butter poached spot prawns • 500 grams Spot prawn tails (other prawns could be used but results will be less rewarding for this preparation) • 150 grams butter salted • 1 garlic cloves smashed • Salt and pepper to taste

RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE

In sauté pan, sweat butter and garlic over low heat until butter is melted and garlic is fragrant. Add shelled prawn tails and add more butter to cover prawns, if needed. Remove from heat and place into a preheated oven on lowest setting (usually around 150F) for about 5-8 minutes. It is important to not overcook these as they will shrink drastically due to their naturally high fat content. Season, remove from butter and chill. Cucumber-basil granité

Chef William Willgress, head chef at Glo Restaurant & Lounge, got his start on Vancouver Island at an early age cooking with his grandmother in her kitchen. Will has studied and worked under such luminaries as Chef Marc Thuet and David Lee at Centro in Toronto, Umberto Menghi in Vancouver as well as a private Chef for an unnamed multibillionaire. This culinary journey has become a lifelong passion for authenticity and understanding the fundamentals of the world’s great cuisines… great ingredients deserve great attention and respect.

Place all ingredients in a blender and purée until very smooth and add a little more water to facilitate blending. Pour into a shallow container with smooth sides that will fit into your freezer stir and often (once every 10 minutes) until a thick slushy (not solid mass) consistency is reached. Assemble the dish in a wide bowl with a shallow covering of the tomato elixir, then the cucumber granité followed by the spot prawns. Garnish with torn fresh basil leaves and seeds (edible please) and a drizzle of olive oil. Enjoy!

ART GALLERY OF GREATER VICTORIA PRESENTS

The Modern Eye Exhibit Celebrating modern craft and design in a postmodern world

We needed to know how to live and what to put in our houses

What did the world do post-war, when people stopped making guns and things for fighting and started making furniture and things for living? In the United States and many other countries, modern art, craft and design were recognized and celebrated — pieces collected. What about in Canada?

So, what is modern design, and why is AGGV showcasing The Modern Eye: Craft and Design in Canada 1940-80? “When you look at the way the works were meant to be,” Tupper says, “it’s really about Canada changing as a country. The war forced us to grow up. We needed to know how to live and what to put in our houses.”

sUMMER 2011

“We don’t value celebrating design in Canada,” says Jon Tupper, director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV). “Everybody knows this is important, particularly curators, but they are focusing more on art history rather than material culture.”

95

| The modern eye

“I think that people felt alienated by abstract art because they were looking for that narrative in the painting and didn’t see the story,” says Tupper.

Canada was largely rural before the Second World War, but became increasingly urbanized in the 1940s and 1950s. Canadians needed all sorts of household items that trailed the post-war lifestyle, like televisions and couches. Eaton’s even hosted display shows to teach Canadians how to stylishly and functionally set up their homes. Galleries were actively involved in the modernist movement, too. Despite these efforts, though, many Canadians still didn’t grasp the “modern eye.”

Much like reading James Joyce, with modernist art and design, there are no lines to penetrate with scrutiny, no narrative to process; the functionality of the art and design is tied up in its aesthetic meaningless. It’s not necessary to understand the art to absorb and appreciate it; however, that doesn’t mean Canada as a nation shouldn’t celebrate its many and talented artists.

Proud supplier of H&L’s 2011 Spring Feature Home ‘Stonecrest’

Allan Collier — wood worker, school teacher and modern design enthusiast/collector — noticed the lack of historical connection between art and artists when he started designing furniture in the 1980s. This, in part, motivated him to start collecting modern pieces for his own use, but he became fascinated with Canadian design through an exhibition in Toronto in 1985 called Seduced and Abandoned: Modern Furniture Designers in Canada – The First Fifty Years.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

“It was about the efforts made to develop the industrial design profession in Canada in the ‘50s, and how it all slipped away because of government inaction and neglect,” says Collier. “So the idea behind it was that these people were drawn into it, and then it just got left.”

AGGV is proud to present a diverse offering of exhibitions including showcases of Canadian historical collections, as well as creating, commissioning and hosting important contemporary exhibitions. Collier approached AGGV three years ago to host The Modern Eye, and finally will run from July 22 to November 27, 2011 at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria on Moss Street, and will be accompanied by an illustrated exhibition catalogue.

“Collier is an interesting curator because he values this part of Canadian design history so much. He’s probably the scholar of post-war design,” says Tupper. “I wasn’t here when Allan approached the gallery, but I would have jumped at it because I’ve worked with him before.” Tupper and Collier worked alongside each other during an exhibition Collier curated in Winnipeg from 1993 to 1994, called Achieving the Modern: Canadian Abstract Painting and Design in the 1950s. Tupper says that Victoria is lucky to have Collier living here, as he’s a huge resource across Canada.

The show will include Collier’s collection, along with pieces borrowed from the Expo ’67 Canadian Craft Collection, Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Maltwood and West Vancouver museums. Confirmed individual lenders from Toronto, Vancouver, Prince George and Victoria will also be contributing pieces to the Modern Eye. Collier’s favourite pieces include a String Chair by Jacques Guillon, which appeared in LIFE Magazine (March 23, 1953), dinnerware by Sial, a chair by the Canadian Wooden Aircraft Co. and lamps by Lotte Bostlund. “I suspect there’ll be a lot of interest in this show,” Collier says. “This show is big and it won’t happen again anywhere for a long time. It’s hard to assemble all these things in one place.” Tupper agrees but says it’s because Collier is the only scholar in Canada with the knowledge and passion to curate a show of this magnitude. Canada’s inferiority complex on the world stage of art and design also motivated Collier to begin collecting. Without a doubt Italy blows the

world away with its exceptional designs, but that’s no reason to downplay what Canada has to offer, Collier says. “Canada always gets bypassed. It gets ignored. Any textbook on modern art might mention well-known Eastern artists, but that’s it.”

100

Canada is not on the world art and design radar, and Collier doesn’t think this is fair. The Modern Eye exhibition is Collier’s attempt to raise the profile of modern art and Canadian designers. Perhaps, in the not too distant future, the story will go something like… when Canada started making furniture and things for living, Canadians began to celebrate Canadian craft and design and designers for designing.

The Parliament Buildings A portrait of architectural magnificence

By Robert Amos

HLMAGAZINE.COM

A theatre for the great deeds of legislators and administrators yet unborn

102

If the Parliament Buildings in Victoria were not so imposing, the capitol of British Columbia would long since have been moved to Vancouver. Architect Alan Hodgson, who led the restoration of the buildings from 1972 to 1976, explained that ”its grand presence, resulting from the impressive use of space and costly elegance of materials – materials that today we simply would not spend enough to buy – makes it a masterpiece of architectural beauty.” As an artist interested in the built environment, I have always been drawn to the Parliament Buildings. Seen against the snow-peaked Olympic Mountains, they make a stately foil for the Classic Boat Festival, for Swiftsure yachts, and for all manner of parades and idling tourists. When its lights come on at twilight, it has a certain fairy-tale grandeur.

The Parliament Buildings |

Main Photo Above: The view over the Parliament Buildings as seen from the Fannin Tower of the Royal British Columbia Museum, a watercolour by Robert Amos

One day while visiting the Ethnology Department of the Royal BC Museum, located in the seventh floor of the Fannin Tower, I took in the view over the complex rooftops of Parliament, including everything from the Sooke Hills to the Centennial Carillon. This struck me as undoubtedly the finest view of Victoria and I drew it on site with a pen; later I painted it with brush and ink as a 4 metre long scroll; and now I have made a watercolour especially for Homes & Living magazine. A competition was held in 1892 to design a replacement for the ragtag series of government buildings called “The Birdcages”. The winner, among 65 pseudonymous submissions, was a plan by “a BC Architect”. The jurors were surprised to find the man they had chosen was Francis Rattenbury, an unknown 25-year old from Yorkshire whose only previous experience was the design of a town hall in Cleckheaton, England.

104

The Parliament Buildings |

Terry Reksten has written, “Whatever else may be said of Rattenbury he was a brilliant architect and an astute business man of boundless energy and ambition.” This was his first big job, though in years to come he “netted the largest commissions in the province with a practice that he ran only as a sideline to his many interests.” What Rattenbury looked for “was the opportunity to design huge, powerful buildings; impressive monuments which would dominate town and cityscapes… his buildings were symbolic of his towering self-confidence.” The parliament was a 600,000 square foot complex built on a site of 12.4 acres. He promised to do it on a fixed-price contract of $600,000, though in the end the builders and province paid about $1 million.

The central block consists of three wings in a T-cross-axial formation with a 42-foot diameter dome on its octagonal drum. Anthony Barrett has written that Rattenbury modeled “the dome and lantern upon the ones Brunelleschi had erected on the Florence cathedral in the fifteenth century. By introducing other motifs from the Italian Renaissance,” he continued, “like the round-headed windows, Rattenbury clearly differentiated the Victoria Parliament Buildings from the customarily Neo-Classical federal and state capitols of the United States.”

sUMMER 2011

Architecturally, it is described as a tripartite plan, English 18th century in conception. There is a huge central block containing the Legislative Hall and administrative departments, with the two flanking blocks located at the ends of 40foot colonnades. Rattenbury’s design included the popular Romanesque style of the massive arched ceremonial entrance, while the rough cut masonry and the stumpy columns of the drum of the dome injected a sufficiently medieval note to allude to the Neo-Gothic Parliaments of Westminster and Ottawa.

105

The Parliament Buildings were illuminated for the first time on June 21, 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee

To Left: The Classic Boat Festival, an annual celebration in Victoria Harbour, painted in watercolour by Robert Amos Below: The Parliament Buildings illuminated in the evening, a watercolour by Robert Amos

The new buildings were first illuminated - with 3,330 light bulbs highlighting the façade - on June 21, 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the first such electrical display in Victoria. It must have been breathtaking. This “marble palace” was officially opened to great acclaim on February 10, 1898, “a theatre for the great deeds of legislators and administrators yet unborn” according to the Victoria Colonist newspaper of the day. Throngs of visitors admired this showpiece of local workmanship and resources: foundations of Nelson Island granite, Haddington Island andesite stone façade for the “sun-starved” north face, bricks and lime made in Victoria, roof slate from Jervis inlet, Douglas fir structural timber, and a final bill of $923,882. The grounds had already acquired many grace notes. By the harbour stood the giant redwood planted about 1863 and an obelisk 27 feet high of B.C marble had been erected in 1879 to honour Sir James Douglas; a bronze statue of Queen Victoria by English Allen Bruce Joy commemorated her Diamond Jubilee. To cap the new building, a statue of George Vancouver two metres tall, gilded with 14K gold, was placed atop the dome.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Lovers of the picturesque may be surprised to read Rattenbury’s final comment on this building, in his letter to the Victoria Colonist on 18 December 1898: “It is so rarely than an architect is fortunate enough to have the opportunity of erecting a large building amongst the delicate tracery of woodland scenery. And the peeps of high masses of masonry through the trees gives so distinctive a charm… that words fail me to express my grief at seeing this charm disappear…it is not yet too late to save the magnificent poplars at the corner of the James Bay Bridge, standing out in bold relief against the sky, acting as a foil to the outline of the dome and giving distance and perspective to the whole building. If they are cut down, the loss will, I feel sure, be realized when too late.”

106

Much has come and gone since that day in 1898. Yet even without the magnificent poplars, there is much to admire about British Columbia’s Parliament Buildings, certainly the premier architectural ensemble in the province. It’s always fun to take a trip with someone who has never been and Karla Peckett, H&L’s Creative Director is fairly new to the island. So, we made the awe-inspiring stop at Cathedral Grove to admire the massive old growth trees, some of which are 800 years old. After a group photo in front of the largest tree in the forest; a splendid Douglas fir that measures 76 metres high and 9 metres in diameter, the team got back on the road and arrived on the coast with lots of time to spare before dinner.

Our gracious accommodation host for the weekend was the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in Ucluelet. This luxuriously laid back, waterfront hotel property is an extraordinary retreat on Vancouver Island’s rugged Pacific Rim coast. Built with an obvious respect for its environment, Black Rock’s innovative architecture of wood, glass, steel and of course rock, blends in perfectly with the ruggedness of its natural surroundings.

The hotel touts that “Black Rock is one of the most stunning new outposts on Canada’s wild Pacific coast” and I couldn’t agree more. P. Vert H&L Ad 2011 — Tracey Drake, Homes & Living 1/2

Black Rock Size: 5.1875” (w) x 7.2188” (h) • REV1 • April 11/11

We checked into our oceanfront villas, perched atop majestic raging waters dancing over massive outcrops of gleaming black rocks. Our suites featured a gourmet kitchen, gas fireplace, and spa-inspired bathroom with heated floors, soaking tub and rain showers, and a furnished balcony with the most spectacular views. It is one of those places where you really do go just for the hotel room – you can sit on the balcony all weekend and never get bored of the ever changing scenery.

summertime and relaxing is easy at…

Later, we dressed for dinner and the team headed to the main lodge for a culinary feast that lasted for hours. We dined at Fetch, the restaurant at Black Rock, whose menu is the creation of acclaimed Executive Chef Andrew Springett, and features local themes and fresh island ingredients made to perfection.

The wine list was exceptional as was the extensive dessert menu. A special thanks to our patient server – Michelle was professional, efficient, and oh so lovely as we meandered our way (often at a snail’s pace) through an exceptional dining experience. H&L’s front desk administrative magician, Lana McKinnon created a special drink for our weekend. Aptly named the Grey Whale, it is two parts Grey Goose vodka and one part Blue Curacao. Ask for it next time you are there!

Robert Read, publisher of Homes & Living magazine, ordered up a veritable feast of appetizers for everyone to taste. Although they were all fabulous, from the Hansen candied salmon and the fresh Dungeness crab, to the crispy confit pork belly to the seared ahi tuna, a table favourite was the Yukon gold potato and fennel soup. For main course, I recommend trying the roasted peace country double chop lamb, but the pan roasted beef tenderloin and seared Qualicum Beach scallops were also big hits at our table.

Eugene, Jamie’s Whaling Station

H&L’s photographer, Alec Watson, captured many great images of the scenery, our staff and our guide, Eugene. Any time you take a trip like this, your guide will often make or break the experience, and we had the best. Eugene, who hails from the Tla-o-qui-aht village of Opitsat, on the other side of the Tofino inlet, began his career at an early age, running a water taxi service from a small vessel, back and forth across the inlet. The water was rough that day, and Eugene was expert at manoeuvring the large swells of water to minimize seasickness, although it did not elude us altogether. Except for Suzanne Gurnell, H&L’s VP of Sales, Steve Drake, Web Services and I, everyone got a little green around the gills, and then quickly recovered. Due to the high winds, we were not able to venture out into the rough open seas and sadly, we did not see any whales. Instead, Eugene took us through the inlet and around the islands, where we saw sea lions, herons and a family of eagles; and kept us entertained with great stories about the area, the wildlife and whale watching.

H&L Team goes whale watching at Jamie’s Whaling Station

Saturday we headed to Tofino – a sleepy little village this time of year. Some shops were not yet open but the charm of this place never closes. You cannot help but feel at home in Tofino; everyone is more relaxed here and even the ocean, nestled into its picturesque cove, is decidedly calmer.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Finally, it was time… we were going whale watching! After all, with the 25th annual Pacific Rim Whale Watching Festival in full swing, it was the main reason we made the trip. Our group arrived at Jamie’s Whaling Station and prepared for our trek to see the great grey mammals. The very first whale watching company in Tofino, Jamie’s Whaling Station is in their 29th season, and offers a wide variety of tour options in either a 65 foot cruiser or a speedy zodiac. We chose the latter and got suited up in bright red, puffy flotation jumpsuits that were not at all flattering, but kept us warm and dry from the brisk elements on the open waters.

112

Saturday night, we dined in Ucluelet at the Matterson House Restaurant; a hidden gem that everyone needs to experience. It is quintessentially Ucluelet – warm, inviting, unassuming and authentic. The owners, Sandy and Jennifer Clark were the perfect hosts; Sandy is the chef and Jennifer runs the front of the house (check out their photo with H&L publisher Robert Read in Smile! on page 18). Originally known as Glendale, and built in 1931 at a time when Ucluelet was only accessible by sea, the Clarks assumed ownership in 1996 and offer a diverse menu of affordable, home-cooked goodness. Their traditional prime rib dinner, complete with an oversized Yorkshire pudding, is alone worth the drive from Victoria.

Sunday was supposed to be surfing day. However, the day was cold, it was raining hard and we were facing unknown road conditions for our long trip back to Victoria. Our plan was to head to Relic Surf Shop & School, where we would have surfing lessons and then hit the waves with shop owners Mike and Nicole Bray. In 2010, Relic Surf Shop & School welcomed close to 5,000 surfers; their largest demand for lessons comes from those that have never surfed before. The Ucluelet beaches are friendly and the waves are beach break style, providing lots of space and perfect learning conditions.

open house H&L - Spring Issue Reveal Party On Thursday March 3rd, READ media publishers of Homes and Living magazine proudly played host to more than 200 people for the first time at our new waterfront Victoria office on Jutland Road. Amid drinks and appetizers, it was a chance to meet new clients, socialize with old friends and colleagues and share the passion for the magazine’s momentous success with each of them. As one of the highlights of the evening, Robert Read, Founder and Publisher of Homes & Living magazine presented Terry Johal of Terry Johal Developments with the H&L Feature Home Award for his extraordinary building of ‘The Stonecrest’ in Uplands – the feature home on the cover of H&L’s Spring 2011 Victoria issue. READ media looks forward to another exquisite Reveal Party for the celebration of H&L’s Summer edition this June.

Homes & Living magazine would like to thank: GLO restaurant & lounge: Paul Simpson and his staff at GLO did a fabulous job; the serving staff making the rounds in a tightly packed space to stave off hunger with delicious hors d’oeuvres; the bartenders fastidiously keeping everyone’s glass full. Victoria Premium Automobile & Ascot Limousine: The spectacular cars parked out in front of the office were a big hit and a great conversation starter. The Porsche from Victoria Premium Auto and the white Lincoln super stretch limousine and vintage Daimler from Ascot were an added elegant touch to the party. Thanks to the first class Chauffeurs at Ascot, for making sure everyone arrived home safely in stlye after the festivities. Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, Sidney Pier Hotel and Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community: These three world class destination resort hotels stepped up and provided fabulous door prizes for our event. RETIREMENT LIVING |

Preparing to sell the family home Make it a Rewarding Experience By Tracey Drake Perhaps you are a couple who have been retired for a few years now, and want to see the world? Or maybe you have an elderly parent who needs the type of support and supervision offered by a retirement home? In both of these scenarios, the process often involves selling the family home to ease burdens and liquidate assets to finance the travel dreams or pay for ongoing retirement living and health care expenses.

No matter the reason or what the statistics say, when it comes time to sell the family home, it can be a daunting task that comes with high emotions, misgivings and anxiety – but there are a few ways there are ways to make the process less stressful and perhaps more profitable.

sUMMER 2011

It is a fact that seniors are living longer and enjoying a more active lifestyle than previous generations due to advancements in science and healthcare. According to a press release issued by the BC Ministry of Health Services in July 2010, the average age in 2008 was 81.1 years, compared to just 78 years in 1991. Former BC Minister of Health Services Kevin Falcon stated, “The average life expectancy of British Columbians exceeds all other provinces and we have one of the longest living populations in the world”.

Include the whole family – When a home is emptied and then sold, there can be remorse afterwards. Regret from the parent who was not included in the house cleaning because everyone agreed it was in their best interest. Regret from an adult sibling that lives out of town and was not given a chance to fully engage in the happenings. In these cases, the left-out person cannot gain closure, which is so critical to moving on in life. Make sure that a schedule is created that allows everyone to participate. Of course, this also shares the workload and doesn’t leave it on the shoulders of just one family member.

126

Choose to celebrate – One of the biggest mistakes that families make when it comes time to sell is making it a sad affair, mourning the loss of the family home. It really doesn’t have to be! In fact, it is an extraordinary opportunity, truly once in a lifetime, to go through every single item in the house where everyone grew up. Go ahead – laugh about gaudy knick-knacks made as children, talk about the awkward teenaged photographs that line the hallways, and delight in each recollection of holidays spent together.

RETIREMENT LIVING |

Cut the clutter – A home contains a lifetime of memories, mementoes and keepsakes, and for most of us, a ton of unwanted junk that has no meaning other than collecting dust and taking up floor and counter space. By starting with the easy stuff, namely getting rid of the unwanted stuff, it eases everyone emotionally into the tougher tasks ahead. All this extra stuff clutters the house, making it appear smaller, dirtier and disorganized; three things that are major turnoffs for homebuyers. By reducing or altogether eliminating the home’s clutter, you offer a clean slate to buyers and that single action very frequently translates to a higher asking and final selling price.

The keepsakes and memories… those are yours to cherish forever

The average life expectancy of British Columbians exceeds all other provinces and we have one of the longest living populations in the world Most retirement communities will allow you to bring your own furniture, which creates an immediate sense of home and familiarity for mom or dad. You can do the same, choosing a few special pieces of furniture (perhaps from your childhood bedroom) to bring home with you. Finally, keep in mind that when all is said and done, you are only selling the physical building. The keepsakes and memories…those are yours to cherish forever.

That’s real value.

Our award winning retirement residence offers an incredible quality of life, fantastic amenities and complete freedom to enjoy every day. It’s exceptional value, in a beautiful residence, from one of British Columbia’s most respected companies – Berwick Retirement Communities.

Tony’s Take on Vancouver Island

It didn`t take long. In fact I was smitten on the spot. I loved Vancouver Island immediately when, some thirty years ago, I travelled to Victoria to take up a post as the West Coast correspondent for CTV News. I had grown weary of the anchor desk at CTV affiliate CFTO in Toronto. It was a late night program known as Nightbeat that was a ratings success in the city and a near perfect job. Among other things, by the time I arrived at the office every day the “suits” had gone home for the day. The news room was mine; I had a small, skilful staff and half an hour of air time to fill. In a city the size of Toronto, that wasn`t exactly a huge challenge and most nights, except on those when news was breaking, we had it scripted and ready to go long before deadline. The trouble was that I had done it for nearly a dozen years. My path to bigger and better things – the six o`clock show namely- was blocked by other people with as much talent as me and no appetite to move elsewhere.

“Don`t get me started on golf

So I decided to move in another direction. First, I challenged my bosses to move me on, to elevate me to that precious evening spot, but they were having none of that. The current star was firmly entrenched and, besides, they thought I was doing a perfectly adequate job on the late shift. So, to spite them I guess, I turned to the network. CTV was a burgeoning force in Canadian television. It shared the national air waves with the CBC and it was beginning to establish news bureaux in some of the larger centres across the country. Perhaps, I thought, with my reporting experience, some years in radio and a number of years as a “street reporter” in Toronto before taking the anchor desk, and the job that had now become more than I could bear, I could convince the network bosses that I would be suitable material for a bureau in, say, Vancouver. That, I was told, was already taken by a reporter, Casey Baldwin, who seemed unlikely to give it up for the sake of some upstart anchor and move back to the climate he had happily left behind some years ago.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

So, what next? It turned out to be London. England! I was a Brit who still carried a British passport so why not try the BBC or ITV, the two networks that might give me at least a tryout. I went fully convinced that I would end up working “back home” and I came really close. I could have had a job but the pay was so low, compared to my Canadian salary even in those days, that I couldn`t afford to even attempt to live in a place where the cost of living was high and getting higher. I returned home utterly defeated and prepared to take whatever scraps came my way.

130

Fortunately, luck seemed to be with me. A few days after I`d skulked back into town a call came from the network brass. As luck would have it, the Vancouver bureau had become vacant; something about a disagreement between Baldwin and his immediate bosses at head office. Who cares? I was on my way.

where political parties gather each day to grapple with the issues of the day is one of the outstanding examples of the grandiose architecture of its day. It fairly reeks of history and it is probably one of the most photographed attractions on the Island. Not one tourist goes home without a picture of the edifice, preferably one that shows it as a backdrop behind the wife and kids.

Just to edit the telling of this story, part of my job after I settled in Vancouver and got my bearings, was to take frequent trips to Victoria to cover stories from the provincial legislature; stories that might have some national interest or involve issues peculiar to this province that other Canadians might find interesting. At that time, I thought that the rest of the country often thought of the West Coast as a frontier province, a bit wild and woolly and certainly a curiosity when it came to its politics. From my point of view, the good thing about politics here was that the day-to-day business of the government is conducted in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The building

Clearly, there is much more to Victoria that that. I`ve often thought about the “Englishness” of it all. That certainly is part of the charm that draws me to this city but you can`t deny Victoria its own identity. To begin with, it is the capital of the province which gives it a certain amount of cachet. It IS situated on an island renowned for its benign climate. At the same time, it can boast of a not-too-distant ski destination that this year, almost got buried in its own near-record snowfall. It truly is then, a place where, in the winter, you really can ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon and perhaps squeeze in an hour or two of fishing in between.

An extraordinary lifestyle awaits you on Idiens Way ... Enjoy a high standard of living at an affordable price. New home building lots are available from $152,900 and new homes currently under construction start at $448,000. Local Craftsman style builders Benco Ventures, D&D Enterprises Ltd., and Finlayson Homes are constructing beautiful and affordable custom homes on Idiens Way.

Where else do spring flowers push their way up into the sun in midFebruary? Who else in this world actually takes the time to do a bloom headcount, even if it`s just to claim bragging rights with the rest of country or poke fun at Torontonians who struggle with a winter season that`s been known to last well into April.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

By early March, Victorians are celebrating the pink and white explosions of cherry blossoms along our city streets. As an interesting side note, I am told that it`s all part of a plan first put in place by a Victoria clergyman who might have been an amateur arborist or a keen landscaper. Streets were planted with different breeds (if that word even applies) of cherry trees. That was designed to keep the spring parade going as long as possible. Each species, perhaps that`s a better word, bloomed later than the others thereby promoting a much longer, more colourful season. His foresight paid off, didn`t it?

We happen to have a dog. Who in Victoria and elsewhere on the Island doesn`t? Or so it would seem to me, and who would want to live in a world without dogs anyway? Where else in this country would they set aside vast tracts of land, on the seaside no less, so dogs and their masters can run and play at their leisure? Well, the dogs anyway. My favourite walk, rain or not, is Dallas Road. It is Jack’s too and my wife Tammy loves it as well. This is as good a place as any to mention that she was born in Victoria, her mother lives here and so does her grandma. But, I digress so back to Dallas Road. It`s an off-leash area for the likes of Jack and he loves it. In fact, I think he thinks he

We happen to have a dog. Who in Victoria and elsewhere on the Island doesn`t? Or so it would seem to me, and who would want to live in a world without dogs anyway… actually owns it, but then it seems that every other dog out there has a claim on the long, beautiful stretch of park and pathways along the sea. In all the times we`ve walked the area, I`ve yet to see two dogs in a combative mood. They just seem to sense that the land and the mood are there to be shared. Run if you want to, play if you must, chase if you need to and even bark, but above all, remember it’s there for all of us. That`s the canine code and what a glorious place it is… even if you`re not a dog. Don`t get me started on golf. It`s not quite my passion but it is a pastime in which I could get thoroughly involved, and this is the place to play. There`s the storied Victoria Golf and Country Club with beautiful holes that hug the seashore in Oak Bay, and Cordova Bay with its outstanding layout. I could play Highland Pacific every day; the people at Bear Mountain should be proud of their creation and the old park-style Uplands course is brilliant. There are some courses I haven`t played yet, but they’re on my list. In fact, there are so many things I intend to do, to explore and to discover as we begin a life on the island; just one other thing, or two, before this column ends. I can`t get enough of Capital Iron in downtown Victoria, or Devour, or Delish, or meat from Slaters or pate from Choux Choux, or lunches in the Bengal Room or the goats on the roof in Coombs. I had better stop right now, as I`m getting far too hungry. Oh yes, there`s storm watching at the wonderful Black Rock in Ucluelet, and lunch at the Wickaninnish Inn and then there`s…

Since 1961, Young Life has been reaching out to teenagers through positive adult relationship building. Young Life leaders are committed to friendships with kids - no strings attached. Leaders spend time with kids playing road hockey, going to the mall, watching a basketball game, heading to the ski hill - leaders go to where the kids are and enter their world. The 21st annual Home Design & Renovation Tour 2011, Young Life’s annual fundraising event, was a resounding success once again this year. The weather could not have been better for the event; the warm sunshine drawing crowds of homeowners and budding decorators to tour sixteen sensational homes across greater Victoria, who opened their doors for one weekend only. It was a rare and educational peek at completed renovations and custom homes by many of the city’s leading builders and designers. Homes & Living was the exclusive magazine media sponsor for the event this year; our magazines proudly available free of charge inside each featured home on the circuit. The first stop on the tour, a penthouse suite at Parc Residence set the bar high for the rest of the tour. The spectacular custom kitchen, wenge paneled feature wall and built-ins by Swiftsure were set off by the soaring ceilings and interior design by Livtona. Along the way, we discovered many design and renovation highlights. The Urbana designed kitchen, inspired by a salt shaker, was a striking ruby red functional space that successfully married modern

with vintage. The newly built Gonzales home by Ron Egli Construction was a crowd favourite. Although it was built on a small lot, the home was light filled, spacious and charming; with brilliant home staging by Design One Stevens Interiors. A complete interior overhaul of an Uplands home by Mac Renovations was warm, inviting and featured a stunning white oak curved staircase and a newly designed contemporary open floor plan. Equally exquisite was the de Vine Vineyard, built by Maximilian Huxley Construction, which was a feast for all the senses, including taste! The custom millwork and distinctive finishing touches were well thought out and executed to perfection.

The weather could not have been better for the event; the warm sunshine drawing crowds of homeowners and budding decorators to tour sixteen sensational homes across greater Victoria The most unique property on the tour was BC’s first eco log home, built by Van Isle Ecolog Homes. It was decidedly rustic and charming as a timber home should be, but with substantially more light and space to accommodate the discerning modern family.

Blues Bash 2011 Teetering on the brink of extinction just a short time ago, Vancouver Island Blues Bash is coming back with a vengeance: September 3-5, 2011 By Ben Vorst

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Victorians will once again be getting in touch with the visceral side of their musical identity this fall – the Vancouver Island Blues Bash continues, celebrating its 17th year - the best blues fest this side of the Mississippi.

140

After the threat of the festival being cancelled due to loss of Gaming Funds from the provincial government, the popular event has been brought back to life by recent partnerships with Newport Realty, Abstract Developments and Homes & Living magazine. The Victoria Jazz Society’s

annual celebration of all things blues returns to its stomping grounds with a brand new line-up. This much anticipated musical festival will offer the best of blues, R&B and more. This year, the soulful celebration returns for three days and two nights, September 3 through September 5, 2011. The festival, which regularly draws 15,000+ visitors, will once again get down and dirty at the Ship Point picnic site, one of Victoria’s more charming outdoor venues. The popularity of the event has grown due to its community friendly

format; offering free shows during the day and paid headliner shows in the evening. This neighbourly atmosphere is one of the reasons local entrepreneur, Jack Petrie, of Newport Realty stepped up to help support this year’s festival. “It’s not just that I get to see the Holmes Brothers and James Cotton when they come to town,” said Petrie, noting some of previous years highlights. “It’s the high school kids, and families with kids, that get to see them in such a wonderful setting under the stars. It’s community coming together.”

At festivals like the Blues Bash, you can often “discover” original artists before they hit the big time, an attraction not lost on Petrie. “I got to see Keb Mo as an opening act,” he said. “Nobody knew how big he was going to be.”

Darryl Mar, Executive/Artistic Director of the Victoria Jazz Society, noted that the resurrection of the blues is continuing and that the VI Blues Bash is drawing fans from all over. “There is a very active blues scene in Victoria and Vancouver Island,” he said, remarking on the high number of British Columbian blues artists over the past few years. “We have seen a major resurgence of blues on the island, in North America, and in Europe.”

Au-Contraire!

A vintage table is the perfect way to bring a touch of the old into a decidedly modern dĂŠcor scheme. A new coat of paint will completely transform the look while saving you money! Painting antique furniture is a quick and easy way to create a vintage look at little cost. Look for pieces that have intricate designs, grooves and neat handles; these features pop when painted a creamy vintage white or glossy black. Applying new paint and then sanding to give it a gracefully worn look is the perfect way to marry vintage and modern design. Layer the table with a mix of old and new; gleaming silver candlesticks from a modern shop downtown and tattered old books from a second hand book store.

MOdern meets vintage |

Check vintage boutiques, second hand stores, charity shops and even the local dollar store for designer looks at affordable prices. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures and add a touch of colour to pull the old and new styles together.

Bringing yesterdays chimneys & fireplaces up to todays building code requirements.

Accessories are inexpensive and go a long way to creating a pulled together and thought-out look when paired with something modern like a basic clear jar. Try filling the jar with candies for a super cheap decoration that has a dramatic effect.

If you are like many, you are settled, with a couple of kids and a full-time job. The morning routine is a domestic marathon; getting the kids off to school and preparing for work. There is never time for breakfast and forget about a workout! Before you know it, another day has passed and your resolution to get healthy has taking a backseat to life. Sound familiar? You are not alone! The problem is that while you are caring for everyone else, you

are the one suffering. Your body begins to show the signs of your selfless lifestyle. Maybe your tummy is giving away your unhealthy secret or perhaps the telltale signs of inactivity are in your thighs. It can be scary. You may not know when it happened, but your body changed. Even if you are ready for change, the task may seem daunting. You will need to develop an educated approach that will ensure your success. Every body is different and therefore has unique

fitness needs. The key is to develop a fitness or weight loss plan that is tailored to your body, your schedule, your goals - YOUR LIFE! Combined with healthy eating, physical activity rejuvenates the mind, reduces mental fatigue and stress levels, and aids in the prevention of age associated decline. Prolonged inactivity can lead to a significant decrease in muscular strength, by as much as 80 percent for people over the age of 65.

HEALTH & WELLNESS |

Did you know? By age 65, individuals who have not exercised regularly may see a decrease in muscular strength–as much as 80%

What can you do? For someone just starting out, working out three times a week for at least thirty minutes is a great way to elevate your heart rate, tone muscles and burn fat. Don’t forget about the social side of fitness! Take a lunchtime walk with a co-worker, an evening bike ride with your spouse or partner, or engage in a fun sporting activity with friends.

If your fitness plan doesn’t fit your lifestyle, it will never work
