id you see that cute little furbaby on the cover? Ulla is adorable, she loves running in the park and at home. She flies up and down the stairs then back and forth down the hallway. She plays hide and seek just before chasing me around the house. After, she jumps on the couch, rolls to her back, and begs for belly rubs. You would never guess she is over 10 years old. Sometimes I forget she’s a senior! Ulla’s mixed-breed is called a Dorkie because she is half Dachshund, half Yorkie. Dachshunds are said to be loyal, curious, charming, lively, and brave. My darling Ulla has those qualities while being a comical clown exhibiting humor. Many Dachshunds live good long lives, but unfortunately are prone to back problems. Ulla’s Yorkie traits include being loving, inquisitive, energetic, and physically and mentally quick. Yorkies, like Dachshunds, live long lives, but are susceptible to liver, knee, and eye diseases. Mixed-breeds are just that; a mix of temperaments, personalities, and possible health issues. When adopting a mixed-breed, you take the chance of inherited traits from each breed. This isn’t necessarily bad. Sometimes the mix of DNA can change genetic makeup allowing the best of both breeds. When adopting from a rescue organization, you can be given an idea of the mix-breed, but a simple DNA test may disclose more.

Also, when adopting rescued creatures, we aren’t always privileged to know their age. But as they say, age is just a number. So, enjoy your pet’s functional age. Animals love unconditionally no matter how old they are and we can choose to do the same. With so many sizes, temperaments, and personalities, it’s important to select the right pet for you and your lifestyle. Some breeds need more attention and outdoor activity than others, so doing the research first can help you make the right long-term decision. If you are looking to adopt, guidance is available. Talk to a veterinarian, a volunteer, foster veteran, or go online. If you would like first-hand experience, volunteer at a local rescue, foster a few pets, and learn hands-on. It is a great way to help our community. I have always been an animal lover! There’s an incredible joy I receive having Ulla in my life. Her energy is mood enhancing and no matter how my day went, I can’t wait to come home to my little furbaby!

Non-Profit Organization Spotlight The goal of Pom Palace Dog Rescue is to provide quality animal welfare and rescue for Pomeranians who have been abandoned in shelters or who are homeless. They are doing their part in making the world a better place for abandoned Pomeranians. One focus is to help older and handicapped Poms and Pom mixes return to health and become adoptable. A Pomeranian can live up to 18 years of age and many are abandoned at an age that many people consider old. However, they can have rewarding lives and enrich the lives of their owners for many years. The Pom Palace works diligently to place each Pomeranian in the right home that fits their needs and the needs of the new “pawrents”. Over 26 dogs have been placed in wonderful homes since the rescue started in July of 2017. Playing

NOT JUST FOR KITTENS & PUPPIES! PLAYTIME is more than just for fun and entertainment. Playtime provides enrichment which means providing opportunities to express their natural instinctive behaviors such as how they would behave in the wild. Cats and dogs evolved as hunters and we need to tap into these instincts regularly to help keep them mentally stimulated and physically fit. Interacting in play with our pets promotes the human/animal bond.

Kittens love to play!

Watching them play is a delightful experience. They look like miniature cats in the wild as they stalk, pounce, chase and capture their prey. They have energetic bursts of exuberant playfulness throughout the day. As kittens mature, however, the periods of playfulness change to more mature cat activities – grooming, eating and sleeping. The average cat spends approximately 16 to 20 hours a day sleeping, 15 to 50 percent of their waking hours grooming themselves, and, of course, some time is spent eating, drinking and litter box duties. The challenge is making sure their daily schedule includes playtime. It is important to start a play routine with your kitten to keep them active and healthy throughout their lives. Each cat is unique and enjoys different types of activities and toys. Cat toys that help mimic the actions of hunting prey are essential. A good toy choice is the wand. They come with a variety of styles. It is easy for us to “become the prey” as the wand is maneuvered to simulate the movements of the prey. Real prey move away so always move the toy away from the cat. Vary your patterns and time to allow them to stalk and pounce. Cats get tired of chasing the same prey so rotate their toys to avoid the “oh hum, I’ve already caught that mouse” response. Most cats prefer shorter play sessions (10 to 15 minutes) throughout the day rather than one long one. As they age the sessions might need to be shortened.

Dogs love to play! Dogs and people are two species of mammals that continue playing into adulthood. Dogs need to engage in fun activities in order to stay physically and mentally fit. They rely on their owners to create a stimulating environment with varied activities, toys, and social interaction to help them maintain their mental health and physical fitness. Exercise is an important part of playtime. All dogs need exercise but how much and what type depends on their age, breed, and general health. For example, dogs in the hunting, working, or herding groups (Labrador retrievers, hounds, collies and shepherds) require more exercise. Generally dogs (and people too) benefit from at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily. Two daily exercise sessions are recommended.

Playing games with your dog is a way to provide mental challenge as well as physical fitness. Probably one of the first dog toys was the stick, though not safe they were just natural toys used for throwing and fetching. Leather balls were some of the first dog toys sold in the early 1900’s. The results in one study about dogs, toys and games showed that 43% of the dog owners reported fetch as the favorite game and tennis balls as the favorite toy. Sometimes the type of games your dog likes to play is influenced by their dominant breed; Retrievers like to retrieve, Shelties and Collies love to chase, and Hounds like to sniff and follow scents. Playtime, exercise, and games provide opportunities for your dog to express their natural instinctive and dominant breed behaviors.

Spending quality playtime is essential for the health, happiness and well being of your pet and helps foster your relationship with them!

On December 14, 1998, Henry Colucci and his wife, Louise started a nonprofit called Colucci’s Animal Trappers & Savers, Inc. or better known as C.A.T.S., Inc. nce again, the holiday season is upon us. Amidst all of the excitement and anticipation comes the stress of planning, shopping, and getting together with family and friends. There seems to be no end to the To Do list. If you are feeling a little overwhelmed and stressed out this time of year, chances are your pets are feeling it as well. As the holiday celebrations approach, there are many things you can do to help your pets stay safe and deal with the stress they may be feeling.

As tempting as it might be to slip Fido a tasty morsel from the table, it is best not to. Many of our favorite holiday foods are too fatty for our pets and may also contain ingredients than can be harmful to them. (Chocolate, grapes, raisins, and macadamia nuts can be toxic to both dogs and cats.) Even if your holiday foods aren’t toxic to them, they are often too rich for their sensitive digestive systems. Stomach upset and the pain that it presents is not worth the risk of a few tasty bites from the table.

The excitement we feel as friends and family come to visit is exhilarating, yet still a little stressful. Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and children all burst into your home for a wonderful holiday visit. Your pets may (or may not) be equally excited about the invasion of their home. Many times, our pets become over-stimulated with the presence of SO many people and the disruption to their lives. To accommodate their discomfort, make sure your pets have a safe place that they can rest and be removed from the chaos of the family gathering. A bedroom or a dog crate can be the perfect place for pets to rest and disengage from the noisy happenings in the home. Make sure your guests know that your pets are resting and need a little alone time. In addition, do your best to keep up your daily routines with your pets. Normal walking and feeding times will ultimately help your pet stay calm and reassure them that all is well in their home.

Mealtime may not be the only holiday tradition that can be troublesome with pets. The Christmas tree can sometimes be a frustrating (but amusing) item to add to your holiday décor. While you fully understand the reason for bringing a tree into the house, your pets may assume that this is yet another MARVELOUS new toy to be enjoyed. Your cat will commend you for FINALLY identifying what a true cat climbing tree should look like! (Hanging those colorful little cat toys from the branches is such an added bonus, AND it even comes with a water bowl conveniently located at the base of the tree…GENIUS!!!) Okay, so your cat doesn’t exactly get the concept, but you can understand what he may be thinking. It’s all about the cat…not you. J

While the pets are resting comfortably, you and your family will undoubtedly be rushing around the kitchen serving guests and preparing the seasonal feast. As the appetizing aromas fill the house, your pets might want to come out and join the fun… (actually, the food). As usual, the holiday feast is maxed out with delicious, mouth-watering delicacies. When you and your family sit down at the table, your pets may suddenly seem MUCH more amiable to this whole holiday experience! 20

As dogs continue to live longer lives due to preventative medicine, new and unique problems arise that 10 years ago were never an issue. Such problems can include arthritis, dental disease, hormone imbalances (hypothyroidism, diabetes), kidney disease, heart disease, and cancer. The most important part of all these conditions is catching it early.

ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAM

Simple preventative care such as a yearly exam is an extremely important aspect of our senior pet’s health. With a comprehensive physical exam performed annually we can check all the systems and oftentimes catch small changes. For example, veterinarians check the teeth for dental disease and likely will recommend a cleaning if there is any evidence of dental disease. We listen to the heart for any signs of a murmur that may indicate your dog needs to start heart medications. Some dogs may require bi-annual or even more frequent exams as they further age and you should consult with your veterinarian to see what their recommendations are.

DIAGNOSTICS FOR SENIOR DOGS

When you bring your senior dog to the veterinarian, the doctor will discuss things such bloodwork, urine analysis, and imaging. This is so that we can catch arising problems before they become a serious condition. These added costs may seem stressful and expensive, but by identifying problems early we can extend our pets lifespan and increase their quality of life.

BLOODWORK

Something as simple as bloodwork can give us a lot of vital information. Senior bloodwork typically includes a test called Complete Blood Count, Serum Chemistry, and a Thyroid Panel (commonly called CBC/Chem/T4). The CBC evaluates the blood cells including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. 26

These can tell us if there is infection going on, any blood diseases, and many more problems. The chemistry evaluates the liver, kidney, and electrolytes to see if there is any disease in these organs. The thyroid panel measures the level of thyroid hormones circulating in the blood. A common condition in aging dogs is called hypothyroidism and this means that their thyroid is low and it manifests as slowing down, heatseeking behavior which most owners mistake this as a normal aging change.

URINE ANALYSIS

Analyzing the urine can tell us if the kidneys are functioning right and if there is any sediment in the urine. The function of the kidneys is to concentrate urine and one of the most sensitive tests for kidneys is to see if they are able to concentrate the urine. Urine also can get sediment like crystals in it and a simple diet change can dissolve these crystals and/or prevent new formation of crystals. Cats

Imaging is also a very important diagnostic procedure. Imaging can include ultrasound and x-rays. These can show us abnormalities in the structures of the chest and abdomen. Oftentimes cancerous masses can be found from imaging. Early detection can mean the difference between months and years. It can also help us detect stones in the bladder, kidney disease, and many other pet diseases.

Caring for our senior pets is unique to each individual animal and your personal veterinarian should be consulted on the frequency of diagnostics and exams. You love your pets and wish they could be young forever, but at some point, you’re going to be living with a senior pet, whether you adopted a youngster or senior pet. As our dog’s age, their bodies and minds start to change, no different than us. They may move a little slower, have trouble getting up and down, trip and fall and less active. Just as we adjust our homes to allow us to age-in-place, we need to consider the special needs our senior pets have. Here are a few suggestions to help your pet age-in-place with you. Slips and falls are one of the leading accidents as we age and no different for senior pets. They can cause painful bruises, torn ligaments, pinched nerves, swollen joints, and fractures. So in my opinion, making your floors safe is a priority. Carpet is great for traction, comfort, and a softer surface if they happen to fall, but many of us have hard surface flooring in parts of our homes. You need to be concerned with slipping when they’re off and running and being able to get their footing when getting up and down. Area rugs will help for those areas where they like to take the corner or their favorite spot to lay, but make sure you have no-slip pad underneath. You can also consider booties that have gripper bottoms. My girlfriend was finding that her Golden was having trouble getting up. She put booties on her back feet, and the problem was solved. She just needed that little extra traction. Jumping and climbing is another major concern. Older dogs can lose confidence to climb on and off the furniture or in and out of the car, some due to poor vision, strength or balance. Ramps and stairs are options. There are many different kinds and sizes on the market, just make sure you purchase one that fits your pet’s size. If they have never climbed stairs, you may need to guide them a couple times. If they have poor vision and sleeping with you, 32

I would consider placing some type of lighting on or around the ramps or stairs, so they don’t fall off when getting down at night. We all want to be comfortable, but as we age, sometimes that’s more difficult to do. Orthopedic mattresses will help relieve discomfort from pressure-point areas as they form around their bodies. The memory foam retains its shape and density, making it easier for them to get up and down. They also have self-warmers for those that tend to be cold. Orthopedic not working, yes there are waterbeds. They have ones that are super-durable and great on their joints. No matter the age of your pet, keeping an eye on them when you’re at work can help ease any stress you have. A camera will let you check-in on them periodically. There are all kinds of high-tech cameras that work like baby monitors, with bells and whistles. You can talk to them, take photos, record videos, dispense treats and some have interactive toys. Personally, I feel talking to them just freaks them out. By mistake one day I hit the speaker on mine. They heard the background noise, and it took a bit for them to settle back down. Also, the treat dispenser may cause them to become obsessed with it waiting for the next one. But you know your pet and what is best for them. Preparing our homes for helping our pets age-in-place is important. It is also

important to keep older pets active. They may have slowed down a bit, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to play. There are soft toys that gentle on their teeth and gums and ones that encourage them to think while they play. Recently I’ve become more aware of Nose Work. It is a competitive sport that uses their mind and sense of smell to do ‘Sherlock Holmes’ detective work. You can do nose work at home. You can put treats inside toys and hide them in the house for your dog to search out and find. I saw a fun one that looked like a giant mop made out of fleece pockets. No matter how old we all are, it’s fun to learn something new.

Give your senior pets extra love and attention, they desire it.

VESTIBULAR DISEASE Sometimes called “old dog disease”

As our dogs begin the aging process, we notice gradual changes in their activity levels or even slight differences in their personality. They may move a little slower, or not want to go on long walks like they usually do. What we don’t count on is our dogs having a wonderful day, only to see a major difference a few hours later. hile there are many illnesses that can come on suddenly, one that is frightening to see is Vestibular disease. It is a disease that often affects older dogs and can occur instantaneously. At first it is difficult to determine just what is going on with your pet. They may walk super slow, or worse, not be able to walk at all. They may drag their legs, or walk in circles. You may notice they tilt their head to one side and their face might even be droopy. There are varying levels of intensity with this disease, as some dogs suffer from nausea, and won’t eat or drink. They may appear like they want to but seem to be confused as to how to do so! In addition, you will most likely notice a very distinct trait of this disease – their eyes will move back and forth quickly. Even dogs without eyes can show signs of this as it happened with mine. Their eye muscles will still move back and forth in a very noticeable manner! Some of these symptoms mimic that of a stroke, so if this happens to your dog, it is best to get them examined by your veterinarian immediately for proper care in either case. If determined that it is Vestibular, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, even though seeing your dog in this distressed state is indeed very frightening. Fortunately, in most instances this disease goes away on its own, usually within one day or up to two weeks. It can be caused by an inner ear infection, idiopathic reasons, or in some cases, there could be a more serious issue. 34

Vestibular is similar to vertigo, in that your dog cannot make spatial judgments, and they are very dizzy. If they are nauseous, they will not want to eat or drink. In that case, your veterinarian can administer anti-nausea medicine. Also, if your pooch is dehydrated, your vet can administer fluid under your dog’s skin to keep them hydrated. While there is no cure, if your vet finds that an inner ear infection is evident, they may administer medicine to cure it. The best thing to do during your pup’s recovery time is to keep them in a confined, quiet area where they can’t fall or get hurt. Keep them away from stairs and pools. You may find you need to bring them food and water if they can’t make it to their feeding area on their own. When you need to take them outside, there are harnesses that make it easier for you to lift them, especially if you have a larger dog.

Take notice to make sure that your pet is improving. If you find that they seem to be getting worse, let your veterinarian know. Otherwise, try to stay calm and patient. Hopefully within in a few days, you’ll see marked improvement!

Non-Profit Organization Spotlight Animal Network was started in 2011 and became a 501c3 organization in 2013. They are dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals in Las Vegas. One of their goals is to find solutions for animals instead of giving reasons why they can’t help. Animal Network also attempts to help families in need keep their animals through their owner assist program instead of relinquishing them to shelters. All animals helped through them are microchipped, spayed and neutered, vaccinated, and have received care for medical needs. It is an all-volunteer organization; there are no paid employees. They feel fortunate to have a great team of volunteers and wonderful rescue veterinarians that assist Animal Network in making a difference in the Las Vegas community. We have all seen our fair share of animal neglect and mistreatment. We’ve seen dogs left in hot cars and people walking their dogs on blistering hot asphalt. Sadly, it seems like we witness too many things that these voiceless animals have to endure. When we see people mistreating their pets, we often want to speak up and say something…but we don’t. We don’t want to cause a scene or start a potentially dangerous argument. Fortunately, there are still ways we can help these animals.

Many of these pet owners are not intentionally mistreating their animals. They may simply be inexperienced or uneducated in appropriate animal care. Whenever possible, we need to help people understand that they may be putting their pets in danger with the decisions they are making for them. Without being confrontational or judgmental, try to find a courteous way to voice your concerns. Do your best to help educate pet owners by being friendly and understanding without being critical. Unfortunately, we don’t typically get the chance to speak to the owners of these pets. Most of the time, we witness animal neglect or cruelty and don’t really know what to do about it. When you see an animal in a life-threatening situation, please report it to the Animal Control agency in your jurisdiction as soon as possible. (Pets left in hot cars or animals dodging in and out of traffic ARE life threatening situations.) Don’t assume that someone has probably already called it in. Chances are, most people are assuming the same thing. Animals cannot tell us that it’s too hot to stay in the car or that the asphalt is burning their feet or if they are too cold. They can’t call out for help, but we can. If we all speak up, we can help their voices be heard.

There are many paths to becoming a therapy team with your pet. Love Dog Adventures is the Las Vegas chapter of Pet Partners. All of our therapy handlers and animals are trained, tested and insured by Pet Partners, a national program in all fifty states and ten international countries. Thus once registered with Pet Partners you can easily move around and continue your volunteering. And Pet Partners is not just dogs! We are currently working with dogs, cats, bunnies, guinea pigs and miniature horses! We are not breed restrictive. What we look for is a naturally calm animal that is truly people-centric, gentle, calm, quiet and does not bark, lick or jump with excitement. For all other species the criteria is pretty much the same. We look for steadiness in both ends of the leash as the handler is even more important than the animal!

Here are the steps to becoming a Pet Partners therapy team and part of the Las Vegas Love Dog Adventures program:

Attend a Free Orientation with your pet to determine if this is the right program for you and if you are ready to move on to our coursework. Contact Sue@lovedogdventures.org for the upcoming schedule.

Complete the Pet Partners Handler Workshop, conducted by a licensed Pet Partners Instructor. You attend without your pet and learn our policies and procedures. The day is concentrated on understanding your pet’s signs and signals and observing best practices and demonstrations.

Complete the Love Dog Training Clinic with your pet and learn the skills required to be an effective therapy team. This advanced training course is the key to your success. How a three pound dog works is very different from a 130 pound dog! Solid basic obedience is a pre-requisite.

Complete the Pet Partners Assessment and Evaluation. We schedule evaluations monthly and some people feel ready at the completion Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine • November/December 2018

of this course. But some realize they need more time before they test so in the meantime they are Love Dog volunteers (without their own pet.) The evaluation is conducted in an indoor location new to the team, with new volunteers and a neutral dog they have never met. Even our bunny had to meet a dog!

Upon passing your Evaluation, register with Pet Partners and begin volunteering with Love Dog Adventures!

The next Handler Workshop will be on Saturday, January 5, 2019 followed by four weeks of training. WEIGHT GAIN and Pet Nutrition

During the winter months, we ALL tend to put on a little weight. People and pets typically put on a few pounds as the days get shorter and the temperatures dip. We tend to blame our extra pounds on those glorious holiday meals and too much pie. But what about our pet’s weight gain? Why are they looking so plump? The easiest answer to this question is “survival”. Before our dogs and cats became domesticated, they needed to prepare for winter by fattening up. They needed the extra calories to create fat for warmth and as a food reserve when game was scarce. Now, with most of our pets living indoors, they no longer need those extra calories. Unfortunately, our pets are unaware of this fact. They still have an innate increase in appetite as winter approaches and may need a little assistance in keeping their weight in check. Like people, successfully reducing your pet’s weight requires less calories and more exercise. Since all pets require a different number of calories, sometimes determining the correct caloric intake can be difficult. Reviewing the serving suggestions on your pet’s food bag is a great place to start. If you reduce the amount of food you are feeding, you will need to ensure that your pet’s minimum protein needs are still being met. A recommendation from your veterinarian is often helpful if you are unsure. Treats should also be carefully rationed, amounting to no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake. AND, don’t forget to exercise! Whether it’s a rambunctious game of fetch or a brisk winter’s walk, the fresh air and the exercise will be healthy for you both.

Amazing work is being done in our nation’s prisons with a variety of programs designed to match puppies who need training with prisoners who have the time and desire to train them. The programs benefit both the pups and prisoners; participants experience unconditional love, enjoy canine cuddling and companionship, and experience peace and happiness. Even the other prisoners experience the helpful calming effects of having pups present in the prisons. Studies suggest that 70-86% of inmates who participate in dog training prison programs remain out of prison after their release compared to 50% of inmates who were not involved in such programs.

The pups are given second chances for finding their forever homes.

LAS VEGAS IS FORTUNATE TO HAVE TWO PRISON PROGRAMS.

Heaven Can Wait Animal Society’s vision is to create an environment where animals get a second chance at life. In 2004, the Pups on Parole program became part of this vision by partnering with the Nevada Department of Corrections. Pups on Parole, a therapeutic and rehabilitation program has been instrumental in helping over 3,500 dogs find forever homes. Six hundred inmates have participated in the program. Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Center is home to over 30 dogs. Many of the dogs came from homes where they were no longer wanted or were about to be euthanized. Some of the pups that enter the program have typically lost their trust in people. They have been traumatized and abused. At the prison they are given time to heal and re-gain their confidence in humans. The dogs are paired with selected inmates, who train, socialize and care for the dog until they are ready for their forever home. The program teaches inmates about animal training and many of them plan to continue working with dogs after their release. Those Left Behind Foundation is dedicated to changing the lives of unwanted pets by providing services and support to autistic children in schools, patriots and the elderly. They felt a need to give back to the veterans who have given so much to our country. This year they created a program, Pups, Prisoners & Patriots (3P) to help veterans, to save the lives of dogs that are set to be euthanized and to give prisoners the opportunity to learn a skill and to give back to society. It is a 12 week program conducted under the supervision of a trainer. Daily in the United States, twenty two Veterans lose their lives to suicide, thousands of unwanted dogs are euthanized and 53% of prisoners relapse and return to the prison system. The aim of the 3P program is to change those statistics. Unwanted dogs from high-kill shelters are moved into the prison program where prisoners can train them. The prisoners learn valuable skills for the outside world while boosting their confidence. The trained dogs are placed with a Veteran or with a military family. The food and all routine medical care are provided at no cost to the Veterans. TLB is confident that with each dog saved, the life of a prisoner and the life of a Veteran are changed forever. Springer Spaniel Rescue, Inc. (SSRI) originally was started in 2007 to rescue older Springers from Las Vegas area shelters and those abandoned by owners. Today, SSRI helps all ages of Springers in 11 western states. They take in dogs from financial hardship cases, relatives of deceased owners and from people who feel forced to give up their dogs for a variety of reasons. They’ve consoled many loving owners who hated to give up their dog. Behavioral training is given to the dogs that need it. SSRI is dedicated to finding both foster and permanent homes for all ages of Springers. They are looking for volunteers to join their team of positive, dedicated, caring and loving people. Foster families also are needed in NV, AZ, ID, UT, CO, CA, WA and NM.
