In his book “The Building of Malta during the period of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem 1530-1795”, Quentin Hughes says that “the carvings on the facades of the Stagno palace are most original and interesting. The triple rolls of the Melitan mouldings are even fatter and more bulbous than usual, but they are strangely combined with delicately carved leaf decoration on the consoles which support the window pediments. These consoles rest upon grotesque heads and tall narrow panelled pilasters which lie against the architrave of the windows. The frieze is richly carved with a flat strap decoration and all the mouldings are unorthodox by any but Maltese standards. The carving of these friezes is more reminiscent of Spanish colonial work from Peru or Mexico than anything usually associated with Malta. The heads have an untamed appearance strangely disquieting.” Apart from these strange carvings, the palazzo boasts several other intriguing architectural puzzles and wonders. The windows and doorways are haphazardly placed just as they occur with no attempt at symmetry and none of the 167 apertures are the same size. The garden was dug out of the bedrock and the quarried stones were used to build the palazzo as well as, it is said, the nearby church of St. George. The garden is served by 3 wells, amongst which is one of the largest dome-shaped wells on the island.

Up to decade or so ago, there was very little happening in this once thriving fortified area in the southern part of Malta. Birgu and Senglea were at the heart of Malta’s greatest battles during the Great Siege in 1565 with Bormla being built some years later in a bid to further strengthen the fortifications. Few know that the Order of the Knights of St John made Birgu the capital city of Malta instead of Mdina (the capital at the time), before later building Valletta and crowning it capital as it stands till this very day. Birgu is the oldest of the three cities and was a popular center of trade from as early as the times of the Phoenicians, seeing large volumes of trade thanks to Malta’s unique position, right in the centre of the Mediterranean. All sorts of commodities were traded on ships which also took advantage of the harbour’s safe waters to stock up and carry out repairs before continuing their journey. Senglea was built in the 1530s and stood tall alongside Birgu during the harsh attacks of the great siege. In the early 1700s, Bormla was built to further support the area. Sadly, the area was heavily bombed during the second world war and whilst some rebuilding took place, most of the landscape has been largely neglected since. This, however was set to change at the turn of the century with new investment being pumped in the area. Birgu today houses a prestigious marina which can accommodate luxury super

yachts. Restaurants, cafes, a maritime museum, a fully restored Fort Sant Angelo, a modern Special Designated Area (St Angelo Mansions), relaxation turfed open spaces, a ferry service to Valletta and an international university now populate the waterfront stretching from Birgu to Bormla. Many palazzos and townhouses have been given a new life whilst respecting the former architectural designs despite welcoming modernisation to cater for the comforts associated with today’s higher standard of living. Guest houses, boutique hotels and rental accommodation have mushroomed over recent years in the various picturesque restored alleys and village squares.
