THE BUSINESS AND FASHION NEWSPAPER OF THE HOME TEXTILES INDUSTRY

Bombay Company Enters Textiles Arena NEW YORK — Bombay Company takes its brand into home textiles and other home furnishings categories this month on QVC, but that’s just the beginning of the rollout. Once a retail chain with more than 450 doors and now a home decor brand, Bombay will debut its first full collection at QVC. The company is also finalizing negotiations for a shop-in-shop with a national retailer that would debut next spring and is looking to go big in placements with major nameplates. Bombay also plans to launch a consumer website in mid-2011. “This brand is being tiered so it can go into the mass market as well as deSEE BOMBAY PAGE 92

dren’s bedding, travel pillows and neck rolls positioned as a luxurious complement to an allergy sufferer’s daily regimen. Claritin bedding is engineered to function as a barrier to dust mites, pet dander and other allergens. Record Demand Keeps Cotton Prices High BY JILL ROWEN N EW YORK — Manufacturers have been struggling with rising cotton prices in last few years and the reason is simple. It is Economics 101: the record demand for cotton around the world is continuing to outpace production. In fact, Cotton Incorporated reported that this is the sixth consecutive year where production has been lower than consumption, with the latest fig-

ures indicating a 4 million bale production/consumption gap for 2010/2011. The silver lining is that organizations from Cotton Inc., to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) and India’s Texprocil all report that cotton production will be up this year. That may be of little comfort to vendors and buyers in the home textile arena. Even this increased production doesn’t offSEE DEMAND PAGE 94

CHF Delves into Brands BY CAROLE SLOAN N EW YORK — CHF Industries is moving into the brand arena even further than its already is, and in some cases changing its approach to the design and marketing in some brands. For CHF, “business at the top end is really strong, and we see it as really growing,” Frank Foley, ceo remarked. Kate Spade and Marc Ekco are set to join the company’s brands with launches planned for spring. The family of brands includes Donna Karan Collection, and the designer’s Essentials and Pure programs as well as two levels of home textiles in DKNY. DKNY will be refreshed in design and merchandisng. “With DKNY we have been fashion leaders,” said Joan Karron, evp, “and we will continue that as our mission. DKNY is a fashion driven brand. Our mission is to stay ahead of the pack with a different approach as well as some core items in the second generation. We will revisit our design leadership.” For each brand there is an inde-

Angela Adams Embraces Wild Side NEW YORK — Taking two design extremes, Angela Adams spring Modern Comfort collection embraces The Wild and The Domesticated as themes for decorative berdding. In her new quilt introductions, the designer uses stripes and squared prints appliquéd in scattered arrangements as major design elements in a collection produced under license by Sunham Home Fashions. Colors in the new palette range from tonal looks to greens and blues mixed and pinks and oranges. Geometrics, starbursts and geometrics are important directions for the five new duvets. Harbor, a geometric percale print, and Circles, a tonal look, are at one end of the design spectrum; Foxy, in pink and orange and Peacock, a starburst in greens and blues, represent another facet of her spring looks in duvets. Quilts in full/queen are $89.99; duvet sets are $99.99. HTT

ier 1 Imports Inc. turned around its comparable store sales in the second quarter and the first half, taking them up double digits after having suffered declines in the same year-ago periods. In the home furnishings chain’s second quarter, which ended Aug. 28, comps grew by 11.2% versus a 7.6% decrease last year. And total sales improved by 8.0% to $310 million in the second quarter. Year-to-date, total sales increased 8.5% to $616 million from $568 million. Comps jumped 12.7% versus a comp decline of 7.5% last year. The company also noted its merchandise margins were “very strong” in the second quarter, and are expected to comprise about 58% of sales. Earnings for the second quarter are projected to be in a range of 10 cents to 12 cents per share. “We are extremely pleased with our comp store sales results for the second quarter. August was particularly strong with the biggest comp of the quarter,” said Alex Smith, president and ceo. “We continue to see strengths in all parts of the country and in all merchandise categories — with improvements in traffic, conversion and ticket. We are especially pleased to be showing positive comps on a two-year basis. Merchandise margins were solid and consistent throughout the quarter.”

NPD: Back-to-School May Fuel Home Textiles Growth BY JILL ROWEN PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. — The

third and fourth quarters of 2010 are poised for growth in the home textile industry, according to Kathleen Cella, director for The NPD Group’s Housewares and Home Textiles divisions. Sales data for home textiles during the same time last year show a return to spending for many consumers. “While many consumers were holding back on spending last year, the back-to-school season may have helped fuel some growth in the home textiles industry,” Cella told HTT. “Third quarter ’09 (July, Aug. Sept.) generated double-digit

growth over second quarter ’09 (April, May, June), with categories such as comforters, comforter sets, pillows, bath mats, and shower curtains showing the strongest growth.” The firm anticipates similar results for the upcoming quarters. Among the categories still struggling are mattress pads, which are off by about 15%, according to Cella. Within the bedding category shoppers are still looking to neutrals, with the color white showing the biggest dollar increases, followed by cartoon logos. White also led dollar growth in the bath category, according to NPD. More daring consumers are turning to prints, especially geometrics, which are making a

comeback. While pricing remains a sensitive issue all around, consumers polled by NPD actually ranked price as a secondary motivator compared to how a product looks when asked what is important when shopping for products. NPD reported that 32% of consumers surveyed in the home and housewares categories noted that looks influenced their purchases the most. “People who are shopping the last quarters of the year may be willing to spend more on their kids for back-to-school, for instance, and perhaps are not as focused on price during their shopping around the holidays,” noted Cella. Looking at the broad picture, Jane Bognaki, president, said: “The good news is that business is coming around, and we are fortunate to be able to build expanded partnership relationships that are stronger than ever. We’re emphasizing innovation and new product development and building a strong team of merchants.” In addition, the company, already the home textiles licensee for Lacoste and Angela Adams, “needs brands as we expand our portfolio.” The company has completed its move to 136 Madison Avenue, which houses its Sunham showroom and the Lacoste and Angela Adams showrooms as well as the office facility. Lacoste and Angela Adams had been at 185 Madison and the office was at 308 Fifth Avenue. Trident Expands Towel Weaving Techniques and Palettes Unveils Fresh Designs in New 295 Fifth Showroom BY CECILE B. CORRAL N EW YORK — New construction technologies and weaving techniques, expanded bathrobes and loungewear lines and a broadened palette for its Southern Living licensed collection are among the many new offerings being unveiled at market by Abhishek Industries Ltd.’s division The Trident Group. Setting the st age for the many rollouts is the company’s new showroom at 295 Fifth Avenue. Located in suite 1112, it measures about 4,200 square feet – roughly triple the size of the company’s former space in suite 909. “Utilizing my extensive

design background, I was able to create a very chic, minimalist vision for the new Trident showroom,” said Joanne Krakowski, U.S. sales and marketing manager. “I focused, of course, on our product presentation. But I also wanted to make our customers my priority. I wanted to consider their needs and offer them a comfort able, loft-like environment where they could come do business, see our products, relax — and never want to leave.” In celebration of its new location and the new product lineup, Trident is hosting a market party in its new space at 4 p.m. on September 12. Under the new label Air

Rich comes an expanded line of the towel program formerly known as Rapper. Originally launched two years ago, these products employ longer loops that are fi rm instead of being shaggy. The result is a plush and soft look and feel that is lint-free and highly absorbent. For market, the company is also expanding the fiber-blend offering of towels made in this construction. Also new this market, Trident unveils a towel program that features a variety of innovative weaving techniques, including variable pile height, texture-in-texture, embossed dobby looks, weft inserts, and others constructions. In a similar vein, the company is also introducing “value added” finishes such as the Cooling Effect feature, antipilling, White Pro, and a ben-

For example, the benzoil peroxide-resistant towel prevents colors from fading when it comes in contact with strong facial acne creams and other similar products. Trident’s White Pro towel retains its whiteness after repeated washes. And the

Cooling Effect towel gives the user a menthol-like refreshing feel upon drying. Trident’s licensed Southern Living Collection is being enhanced with a new eightcolor palette, anchored by neutrals, as well as two new towel ensemble programs: a quickdry bamboo and a Supima cotton cone-ply style. Additionally, Trident is now launching officially – after a short test launch last market – its terry bathrobe and loungewear line. The program centers on 100% cotton terry products, but Trident is offering fiber blends as another option to customers. The company last year set up the manufacturing facility specifi c to these products, and the capacity there is 1.2 million pieces per year. The products are made to complement Trident’s existing terry towel operations. HTT

Surtex Call for designext Entries W H I T E P L A I N S , N.Y. — The 25th anniversary of the Surtex worldwide student design competition, “designext,” is slated for the May 2011 edition of the show — and the call for entries in open now through Feb. 24. “The designext competition is designed to encourage students to think ahead, to think future trends, to think l0 years down the road,” said Penny Sikalis, Surtex manager and vice president of show producer GLM. “We expect to receive 100 to 150 entries from all around the globe.” This year’s challenge specifically tasks students “to create a collection of original surface designs to be used in a commercial interior in the year 2020.” Each student may submit between six and nine original designs that can be used on fabrics, wallcoverings, floor coverings and various furnishings within an interior setting. “Many design teachers

htt100902_018 18

include the competition in their curricula for the coming school term,” Sikalis pointed out. Four winners will be hosted in New York during Surtex 2011, set for May 15- 17 at the Javits Center, and their projects will be displayed at the show. These winning entries will be seen by an estimated 6,000 or more attendees from more than 40 countries, according to GLM. One student will be announced as the grand prize winner as the culmination of the industryjudged competition. The designext competition is open at no cost to students who are in their third or fourth year (junior or senior level) in a college or university and enrolled in a surface-design related curriculum. Details are posted on the Surtex website, www.surtex. com. For further information on Surtex , contact Penny Sikalis at penny_sikalis@glmshows.com or (914) 421-3297. HTT

Trendex Expands Crypton-Branded Performance Table Linens for Market BY CECILE B. CORRAL ST. L AURENT, Q UEBEC — Not

invited to dine at Trendex Home Designs’ table: stains, ill odors and bacteria. The Canadian table linens, kitchen textiles and decorative pillows company is expanding its partnership with Crypton, the patented technology that claims to permanently protect fibers and fabrics from stains, bacteria, moisture and odors, with several new branded offerings set to debut at the New York Home Fashions market. Trendex first aligned with Crypton last year. Since then, the company has steadily grown its product assortment employing the Crypton technology based on increasing demands from customers. For the market, Trendex has added to the program nine new patterns. They are: Jarvis, Brighton, Idris, Tribor, Zania, Key Largo, Hudson, Durar and Tira. Each is available in eight also new colorways. In addition, Trendex will be showing a new tablecloth program which features Crypton’s “In Case” technology – a process that offers all the same benefits of Crypton, except the waterproof barrier. This modified process allows Trendex to offer a full range of tablecloths that can retail at a more aggressive price bracket to appeal to a wider shopper base, the company explained, while still

offering value. “We are finding that there is an awareness growing in the community for Crypton and what it offers to busy, stressed out parents that don’t want to worry about cleaning, smells and health,” explained Lorraine Ragland Maberry, Trendex svp. “Crypton-treated fabrics actually resist the growth of bacteria, mold, etcetera, keeping surfaces, especially eating

surfaces, cleaner. Also, these products last longer and do what they are supposed to do, so we can actually keep them and use them longer, helping us be more ‘green’ within our homes.” The Crypton brand is also being used in other soft home categories, including fabrics by the yard, mattress protectors and covers, crib mattresses, upholstered outdoor furniture,

and children’s car seats. In other market-related news, Trendex is also launching a new “Made in the U.S.” product – a reversible faux suede placemat that comes in 12 reversible color combinations. Brunton International Reigns as King of Faux Fur Pillows and Throws W

hen the market is looking for the newest, most innovative decorative pillows, throws, and blankets, there’s one company that immediately jumps to front of mind. That company is Brunton International Inc., whose wide and growing assortment includes the most sought-after faux fur styles for kids, teens, and adults. It’s a long way from the company’s beginnings in 1991, when it began importing dhurrie rugs from India. By 1998, Brunton branched into chenille throws, importing goods from China – so successfully that two years later Target Stores named Brunton International “Vendor of the Year.”

“We basically reinvented ourselves from our beginning, and until 2004, we were primarily a throw supplier,” says Roy Brunton, president. “Then, with a push from Target, we entered the pillow business, and for two years, supplied Target with its best-selling pillow. We then decided to make faux fur our specialty, and it now represents over 80 percent of our offerings. In fact, today we offer more faux fur styles than any other company, and have expanded from adult pillows into the juvenile, teen, and tweener markets.” Indeed, Brunton International is now one of the largest suppliers of faux fur for the two back-to-school timeframes, positioned firmly at the forefront of the teen/tweener market for pillows, novelty pillows, bedrests, and throws. Its youth product lines are an explosion of bright color; and its teen/tweener appeal goes further with innovative styles like Bling Fur, which Brunton describes as “the hottest single item in the market.”

“It boggles the mind how quickly our Bling Fur turns,” he states. “We have retailers that place an order and come back three times on the same product.” Of course, Brunton has not abandoned adults, and offers a variety of body pillows, bolsters, floor loungers and more, in such colors as chocolate, navy blue, cedar, taupe, and merlot. For the upcoming Market, seven new faux furs for teens and adults will be introduced, each in 13-15 sizes of pillows and 6-13 colors. Plus, a wide range of blankets and throws will make their debut, including a new Featherlight blanket and throw, along with new stylings of Micromink throws with sherpa. “What’s great is that the teen-tweener market is almost a recession-proof business if done correctly – and we know how to do it correctly!” Brunton says. “In a tough economy, parents and grandparents may cut back for themselves but not for the kids. And since our pillows are priced from about $6-$30, it’s an inexpensive purchase for the quality. “As a company, we have truly ‘flown under the radar’ in the textile business until now, but that is about to change,” Brunton adds. “We invite retailers to experience the secret success that is Brunton International Inc.”

Kohl’s Department Stores is raising money for breast cancer research with a new pink-colored line of women’s products – including home goods – under the “Kohl’s Cares” cause-oriented merchandise program. The exclusive cause merchandise will be available in all 39 Kohl’s stores in Wisconsin, the retailer’s home state, as well as online at www.kohls.com. All profits will be donated to support the fight against breast cancer. The first collection for the cause was created by designer Vera Wang for her Simply Vera Vera Wang exclusive brand at Kohl’s. It will be available Sept. 7 through Dec. 24. Spanning 15 items, it includes apparel, accessories, fashion jewelry and home goods, each priced

at $5 or $10. The collection will be merchandised together in its own center aisle of each store. The Kohl’s Cares breast cancer cause merchandise program will continue with a new collection after the holidays. Future collections will include special items from other exclusive brands at Kohl’s. “As Kohl’s has recently expanded our philanthropic efforts to support the fight against breast cancer, we are very excited to expand our cause merchandise program with exciting new items that benefit that cause,” said Julie Gardner, evp and chief marketing officer. “The new cause merchandise collection, designed by Vera Wang, represents so much more than beauty and value; it gives our customers an easy way to support a cause that means so much to all of us.” HTT

The line, planned as a 250piece caption, currently includes globally-inspired furniture, tabletop, top-of-bed, embellished accessories, textiles, and gift and novelty items. Seasonal products will include holiday florals and wedding collections. Retail prices start at $7.00 and run up to $1,500 for investment furniture pieces. Bombay Company’s intellec-

The brand, which is produced under license by Hermes-Otto International USA LLC, has a new showroom here at 489 Fifth Ave. Bombay is scheduled to debut a collection of 14 décor and accent pieces on QVC on Sept. 30. The one-hour show marks “the beginning of a relationship between the Bombay brand and the leading multimedia retailer,” according to the company. “You can really romance a product on QVC, plus it has a wide range of customers,” said Hollands. Although the Bombay Com-

pany retail chain went out of business more than two years ago, the name still averages more than 800,000 search hits on Google per month, said Hollands. “The foundation of where we are today is built on top of Bombay’s lifestyle. On top of that, we are layering pieces that would be appropriate for Bombay Stores if we were live today,” he added. Although the home textiles piece is currently being produced by Otto’s in-house design and sourcing team, the company is considering licensing out directly to home textiles suppliers. “It’s a fashion-driven category, and it can stand on its own,” said Hollands. pendent marketing team at the brand “but most of the development is with us and then run through the brand,” Foley explained. That allows for advertising, social media, in-store, signage, and training to follow the pattern of the brand’s concept. “This assures that a very significant level of public relations, advertising and consumer response that the participants are the target customers” for the specific brand. For the Kate Spade collection, “it’s coinciding with the revival of mid-century modern like the 60’s,” observed Karron. “It’s a classic style with a David Hicks focus in the color palette. As for Mark Ecko, “there’s a cut and sew approach to the brand for department stores that is tailored cloth for sportswear; and a Mark Ecko Unltd approach geared to young adults with the signature rhino as the logo,” Foley commented. In the CHF bath line, stripes,

jacquards, and embroideries are the key fabrics and embellishments with the color palette using gray as the new core with black, purple and green combinations as well as seafoam. Shower curtains, accessories and rugs are shown in collections. The designs are geared for a younger customer, and “they are extremely fickle. The cycle is so painfully rapid, this customer gets bored fast,” Foley noted. New to the line are wool rugs from India geared to the bath segment but in sizes suitable for other rooms – 5-by-7 and 3-by-5. In window coverings, a CHF strong suit, new fabrics and treatments offer fresh looks with contemporary moving in to replace some of the classic fabrics and treatments. set the increasing worldwide demand for the popular fiber. And then there’s the weather. The end result: don’t expect lower prices any time soon. According to Jon Devine, manager, market economics and analysis, Cotton Inc., cotton prices are at their highest level in 15 years. While stock – warehoused cotton from previous seasons – is at 40 percent, its lowest level in that same time frame. The ICAC Price model forecasts a 2010/11 season average of 89 cents per pound, according to the Cotlook A Index. (The Index tracks international raw cotton prices to come up with an average.) The forecast translates to a 15 percent increase in price over 2009/10. “According to the estimates by industry sources, cotton prices are likely to increase in the first quarter of the season, October to December 2010,” agreed Sidartha Rajagopal, executive director of Texprocil, India’s non profit marketing organization. “After that, depending on the demand and supply, prices are likely to fluctuate.” There is a cyclical element to cotton farming that is also at work. In the U.S., for instance, lower cotton prices of years ago convinced many farmers to choose more lucrative crops to plant. “The places you can grow cotton, you can also grow corn (for ethanol) and soy and that’s what farmers have been doing,” noted

focus on anti-dander properies. “Allergists recommend the use of allergen barrier bedding as a tool to help control allergy symptoms,” said Marc Jason, ceo of London Luxury. “We are so excited to work together with the makers of Claritin to bring consumers the ultimate allergen barrier bedding.” James Mackey of Merck Consumer Care, the maker of Claritin, described London Luxury as “best-in-class” and characterized the collection as an opportunity to “reach consumers in new, innovative ways.” In another big introduction this week during the New York Home Fashions Market, London Luxury is taking the Arm & Hammer brand into a full range of kitchen

Devine. Supima, the U.S. organization for Pima cotton growers, reported that last year California had its lowest acreage of cotton since the 1920s, at 190,000 acres with Pima cotton accounting for 62 percent of that. Only now, with the promise of higher prices, have some farmers decided to grow cotton again in the U.S. In fact, production domestically is expected to increase by as much as 50 percent – due to more plantings as well as cooperative good weather which promises a higher yield. In addition, India is expected to show a significant increase in production and yield. But still, demand overshadows the production. According to Rajagopal, no one country accounts for the higher demand and increases are being seen across the board. “This demand is not region specific or country specific. The all around increase is expected on account of rising exports of textiles and clothing and also rising domestic consumption, especially in markets like China, India, Vietnam, Turkey and Bangladesh,” he said. While the U.S. tries to close the production gap, adverse weather and natural disasters have wreaked havoc around the world, including Pakistan, where the cotton crop has been devastated by floods. According to Armelle Gruere, a statistician with the ICAC, “The Pakistan crop estimate was revised down by about 15 percent to 1.9 million tons. There is still a lot of uncertainty, however, and that number may change because in many areas the flood wa-

ters have not yet receded.” According to Devine, Pakistan is not only a large producer of cotton, but also one of the world’s largest suppliers of yarn. “There is a trickle down effect that could not only impact the price of raw cotton, but yarn levels as well and could ultimately result in price increases in finished products,” said Devine. Crops in China’s Yangtze River Valley region were also victims of bad weather. On the other hand production projections for India, Australia and Uzbekistan are up. This mixed bag of news doesn’t help vendors in the current marketplace. Because a cotton crop has only one harvest per year, experts predict it will take years to achieve a better production and consumption balance. Cotton Inc’s monthly update for August tells a cautionary tale: “Current production and consumption forecasts indicate a 4.0 million bale production/consumption gap in 2010/11. Higher prices, brought about by lower supply relative to demand, should eventually bring production levels back in line with consumption figures. However, with only one harvest per crop year, the corrective process could take several seasons to reverse and begin to increase stocks.” “In the meantime, retailers at the end of the cotton supply chain face a challenging consumer environment,” the report continues, especially “in developed economies where it may be difficult to pass on higher costs posed by higher cotton prices.” HTT

textiles with anti-odor and anti-microbial properties. The collection includes kitchen towels in solids, stripes and dobby weaves as well as scrubber mitts, dish cloths and flame-retardant/heat-resistant over mitts and pot holders. In the Arm & Hammer bedding collection, London Luxury this market is adding bed bug protectors to the line. The company’s Elizabeth Arden brand is taking bedding into an aloe formulation to emphasize the spa aspects of the collection. London Luxury is also debuting a range of sumptuous bath rugs and Mary Jane slippers. “Long gone are the days when you can stick a name on a bed and get a placement,” said Amanda Keller, London Luxury’s director of licensing and marketing. “It has to offer benefits that are consistent with the brand identity.”

The Sharper Image line this market is shown under two themes: winter and summer. The highlight in winter is an electric blanket with ultra-thin wiring and a sleek controller that resembles a Wii component. “This isn’t your grandmother’s electric blanket,” said Gail Nicholson, vp of product development and design for London Luxury. Also new is a comforter for couples who sleep at different temperatures. There are two constructions: one in which fill weights are different on each side of the comforter; another where one side is filled with Thinsulate and the other with regular fill. Each side is trimmed differently so couples can distinguish which is which. In summer, Sharper Image is using the So Cool tag for its bedding made with Outlast Technology. HTT

BUSINESS TodaY Sales Improving at Target M INNEAPOLIS — While home

was not one of the brightest spots at Target Corporation during the second quarter, category sales are improving thanks to recent departmental transformations and the back to college-related season. The 1,743-unit discount department store chain is “seeing positive results in our efforts to clarify the assortments and aesthetic of our Home, Target Home and Room Essentials [programs], positioning us for a successful back-to-college,” explained Kathryn Tesija, evp, merchandising during the company’s quarterly conference call last month. And so far, “sales results for both back to school and back to college have been encouraging,” she also noted. Setting the tone for improvments in the home category have been the “merchandise reinventions” incorporated into Target’s remodeled store initiative this year. This effort calls for updating visual elements and transforming categories such as home, beauty, electronics and video games. Remodeled stores are lifting Target’s total business, she continued. “The performance of our remodeled stores continue to meet or exceed expectations in traffic, total sales performance and the

amount of cross-shopping outside of food that crosses discretionary categories,” she said. “In some cases today we are seeing guests splurging on higher-ticket items that are meaningful to them,” — such as a Kindle wireless reading device, she noted. At the same time customers are gravitating toward house brands like ‘up & up,’ Tesija added. As the back to college season starts to wrap up, Target’s home business was refreshed on Sept. 5 when, for a limited time, the retailer launched its temporary “John Derian for Target Collection” for the home and office. The line will feature more than 100 home décor products and office accessories at prices under $25. Target chairman, president and ceo Gregg Steinhafel noted that total home’s results lately have been “mixed” and “certainly not” up to traditional company standards yet. But the efforts in place into the second half of this year are expected to help home “move ahead positively.” Looking back at the second quarter, profits were up on a small sales increase. Net earnings ended July 31 came in at $679 million for the quarter, compared with $594 million in the year ago period. And quarterly earnings per share in-

creased 17.0% to 92 cents from 79 cents in the same 2009 period. Retail sales in the quarter rose 3.8% to $15.1 billion, with a 1.7% increase in comparablestore sales. Retail segment earnings before interest expense and income taxes (EBIT) were $1.1 billion in the second quarter of 2010, up 3.1%. Total revenues – including Target’s credit card business, rose 3.1% to $15.5 billion. “It’s clear the second quarter marked a change in a recent trend…following stronger results in the last two quarters, our sales trends have leveled off,” Steinhafel said. “Recent results in our business and economy reinforce our perspective that the current recovery will be slow and inconsistent.” While shoppers are still cautious in their spending, he continued, “we are encouraged that we continue to see strong traffic, very healthy sales in discretionary apparel, and strong market share gains in virtually all of our frequency categories.” The store remodel program and modest real estate expansion plans are poised to help boost Target’s performance going forward. Steinhafel offered more details, which includes the opening of 10 new stores in the third quarter. “We plan to steadily build from

this very light program in the next few years, adding 20 or more new locations in 2011, and more than 30 in 2012,” he said. “While we have the appetite, the team and access to capital that would enable our new-store base to grow more quickly, we are steadfast on applying a returns-based approach to approval of stores, and these growth expectations reflect our estimate of the number of projects that will meet our investment criteria in the current environment.” In the meantime, he said, Target is “pleased to invest productively in a re-fresh of our existing store base,” incorporating the

P-Fresh food layout along with improvements in home, beauty, electronics, video games and shoes. Target completed another 116 remodels in the second quarter. So far, the retailer has remodeled more than 200 stores and currently has “well over” 300 PFresh stores operating across the country. Also expected to boost store traffic and average transaction later this year is Target’s new “Rewards” program in which shoppers will begin receiving 5% off whenever they use one of Target’s credit cards or the Target debit card. NRF: September Retail Container Traffic Expected to Grow by 16% WASHINGTON — Even with 2010 already having hit its peak, import cargo volume at the country’s major retail container ports is expected to rise by 16% this month over last September. But numbers will decline through the remainder of the year, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. “Retailers have stocked up early on much of their holiday merchandise in order to avoid some of the supply chain disruptions seen earlier in the year,” said Jonathan Gold, vp for supply chain and customs policy, NRF. “Cargo is still coming in, but the key question for sales will be what happens with employment and other factors that affect consumer confidence this fall.” Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by the consulting firm Hackett Associates, covers the U.S. ports of: Long Angeles/Long Beach and Oakland, Calif.; Seattle and Tacoma, Wash., on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Hampton Roads, Charleston and Savannah on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast. In July, which is the most recent month for which relevant numbers are available, U.S. ports handled 1.38 million 20-footequivalent units (One TEU is

one 20-foot cargo container or its equivalent). That figure was up 5% from June and 25% higher than July 2009. Also noteworthy is that July 2010 marked the eighth consecutive month to show a yearover-year improvement after December broke a 28-month streak of year-over-year declines. August was estimated at 1.35 million TEU, a 17% increase over last year. Other estimates call for: September at 1.32 million TEU, up 16% from last year; October at 1.3 million TEU, up 9%; November at 1.2 million TEU, up 11%; and December at 1.11 million TEU, up 2%. January 2011 is forecast at 1.06 million TEU, down 2% from January 2010. The first half of 2010 was estimated at 6.9 million TEU, up 17% from the same period last year. The full year is forecast to be at 14.5 million TEU, which would represent a 15% increase from the 12.7 million TEU in 2009 -- the lowest since the 12.5 million TEU reported in 2003. The 2010 number remains below the 15.2 million TEU seen in 2008 and the peak of 16.5 million TEU seen in 2007. “While October is the traditional peak month of the annual shipping season as retailers bring in merchandise for the holiday season, July’s figures appear likely to stand as the peak for 2010,” the NRF said.
