EDITOR’S LETTER HW The start of the new year is always an exciting time for interiors. Prior to the year even beginning, Pantone announces the colour of the year (Radiant Orchid for 2014). Early January brings the first interior design fair of the annum – imm cologne – which establishes an immediate glimpse of the trends ahead, and before the interiors world has a chance to rest, Maison & Objet in Paris marvels the globe with exciting new designs at the end of the month. imm cologne has established the furnishing sector trend report this year with the conclusion that while there is a continuing, strong demand for natural materials, people are also in the mood for more colour again. As a result, the dominating interiors trend this year is to combine different elements: wood contrasted with strong colour accents; the merging of different wood types; and pepping up the natural look with brightly painted occasional furniture and with blatantly artificial elements, such as high-tech textiles, plastic chairs and futuristic structures. This HOMEWORKS edition’s theme is ‘Light’, as more and more homeowners are realising its importance in the home. Not only does the HOMEWORKS Lighting Super Guide (page 047) take you through the main rooms of the home with lighting advice and information from experienced professionals, but also Stylist Jennifer Jo Barth brings you lighting inspiration on page 042. “The current trends in the furnishing sector seem contradictory. On the one hand there is a continuing, strong demand for natural materials – especially for wood. On the other hand, people are in the mood for more colour again. Each year, imm cologne embodies the walk-in ‘Das Haus - Interiors on Stage’, which is the simulation of a home, based on plans by a chosen celebrated designer. This year, Danish furniture and lighting designer Louise Campbell was the guest of honour. “Campbell is undoubtedly one of the leading protagonists in a new avant-garde generation of designers who are evolving the grand tradition of Scandinavian Modernism - not only with respect, but also with newfound self-confidence. The designer says of Das Haus: “I wanted to try and create a very special, cosmopolitan, gentle voice. Something that every ideal home has, without which the constant, gentle dialogue between the helpful house and its greedy occupants wouldn’t be possible.”
PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2014: RADIANT ORCHID Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said the colour Radiant Orchid is “an invitation to innovation and encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.’’ Pantone predicts the colour will be popular in 2014 interior design, calling it a “modern and surprisingly versatile shade”. In decorating, the colour pairs well with other bright shades like turquoise, teal and light yellows, as well as neutrals like gray, beige and taupe.

This issue’s homes are orientated around the theme ‘light’, each one exemplary of clever natural and artificial lighting schemes. We begin with a house in Valletta restored by Architect Patrick Calleja. This long-abandoned space is now a striking house with highly distinctive features, rooms, and spaces (page 20). The next story brings us a versatile and warm Q1 apartment at Tigné Point by Architects Martin Xuereb & Associates (page 28). It was imperative to restore, consolidate and highlight the architectural features of this house
alletta is a living Baroque city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage City that will be the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Quite rightly, substantial investment has been made in and around Valletta. We’ve got the Renzo Piano gate, parliament building and the former opera house open-air theatre in the making; the restoration of Fort St. Elmo too. There’s been the recent completion of the fortifications museum and the bridge to the breakwater, and the less recent Valletta Waterfront Project, as well as the St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. These large-scale urban projects have, over the years, undoubtedly helped regenerate certain parts of the city. Then why is the population slowly dwindling, now reportedly below the 6,000 mark from over 9,000 in 1985?

Other smaller projects, mainly the renovation of apartments and some offices, have truly given a new lease of life to otherwise abandoned or dilapidated dwellings, which is where it was most needed: in the inner core. Only the regeneration and continuation of the community will keep the city alive, which necessarily implies an increase in the resident population. The stock of vacant dwellings in Valletta presently stands at around 30%. As a result, it’s rare to come across a renovated house in
Valletta: one that has retained its prime status as a residence. This Valletta house is one of them. To be precise, it hasn’t always been so, because sometime soon after WWII this property was partitioned off internally and used by a number of tenants. Today, it enjoys a new lease of life and meaning as a single, exceptional and beautiful residence. Architect Patrick Calleja (Architects Studio) who managed the project said that the house had been abandoned for years: “It was in an awful state of repair; some of the ceilings were about to collapse and all the doors, windows and services had to be replaced. Fortunately the client had a clear vision of what the house could look like when finished and overcame the first huge obstacle of purchasing from a myriad of owners.” The house had suffered considerable war damage: “The masonry ceiling slabs had been reinstated after the war, but spanned across steel beams on all the floors. “A balcony had been strung across the courtyard at the first floor level to provide access to individual rooms, presumably for the various tenants. This was cantilevered out on steel beams protruding into the courtyard and upsetting the symmetry of the space, so it had to be removed. Fortunately, the barrel-vaulted entrance hall, the staircase and most of the walls remained quite intact. Meanwhile, the high ceilings, roof terraces, stone cornices, grand staircase, large, well-proportioned doors and windows, and a rather ornately decorated arch (despite their poor original state), were not betrayed by the abundant light flooding in each and every space of the house – now they look just magnificent!� It was imperative to restore, consolidate and highlight the architectural features of this house. The only structural alterations carried out were the removal of the balcony in the
courtyard and the replacement of all the steel beams with timber ones. Rehabilitation works began in February 2013 and were completed eight months later. That was when the stunning artefacts, furniture and other pieces brought over by the new owner from Thailand and London complemented the architecture. A spectacular Bohemian glass chandelier suspended in the main hallway sparkles and captivates visitors, as they pass through the restored entrance barrel vault. The courtyard lights up the interior spaces and many of the rooms; a bronze Gandharvalike piper is the focus of attention in the niche at the end of the courtyard, and sets the serene setting for this space. The reflective polished marble flooring throughout ensures a bright, fresh and clean looking passage between the spaces.

The guest quarters are located on ground floor; a grand staircase leads to the main landing overlooking the courtyard and the piano nobile living areas. The main reception room and kitchen occupy the front of the house with the sleeping quarters located at the back alongside the courtyard. A backless Asian sofa divides the main reception room respecting both the living and the dining area, as a reclining Chinese empress watches over. The kitchen is symmetrically placed in front of the ornate archway and overlooks the dining area. he aim of this apartment design was to achieve a space that looked lived-in, and be very habitable as a result. “We opted for a homely design here, rather than the clinical, ultra-modern elements that are becoming increasingly dated. Your home must feel like a home, not a gallery in which you cannot relax,” Architect Martin Xuereb says, “The materials and finishes are not intended to draw attention away from the focal point, which remains the impeccable sea views.”

To ensure refreshingly contemporary and comfortably familiar designs, the architect worked with his architect children to create the right look. The healthy blend of youth and experience provided a winning formula. The architectural team went about maximising the space with wall-to-wall libraries, with ceiling mirrors to offer the impression of double-heights. In order to make the most out of the given space further, the architects created a flow in the open plan space whilst simultaneously giving each area its own designated purpose and privacy. Technological gadgets have also been kept to a minimum to keep the apartment low-maintenance and user friendly. The architects opted for a design that reflected the uniqueness of the block, while still remaining suitable to diverse tastes. This was achieved through a combination of classic and contemporary materials and textures, which can be easily customised through accent colours and soft furnishings. 030

We chose to move away from complicated gypsum ceilings and overused suspended bulkheads, and instead opted to achieve movement with the play of materials. Here, through the use of a cleverly devised system of vanishing doors and suspended sectionals, the kitchen virtually fuses in with the rest of the furniture that surrounds it. his cleverly designed apartment was previously a shell space out of a standard developers block, sold with a few finishes and apertures included in the price. These were then tweaked during production to ensure that they worked with the new design.
T
A detailed brief for any project is a must in order to allow architects to design to their full potential. In the case of MJMDA, they have developed an online profiler, which comes in handy to define the aesthetic requirements of a project as a whole, space-by-space, the preferred finishes, and the desired functionality. The homeowner of this apartment called for a quasi-minimal approach that would also let off warmth. Architect Matthew J. Mercieca: “We take a brief as a set of requirements mostly independent of the space it will be inhabiting. In this way, creative solutions make for a better realisation of something worthwhile.” Principally the permission plans were for a standard segregated space with a preference for three bedrooms rather than more living and entertaining space. There was also a lack of desired facilities. As a result, the architects went about introducing a guest WC, and cloak space, laundry facilities and storage, as well as a passage that would become a quick alternate route to the main bedroom. The third bedroom was integrated with the living space in order to create a 038

more spacious setup. At the fulcrum of the entrance, kitchen, dining, reading and lounge area, a slate-clad free-floating fireplace was introduced. Another important element that was established was the enlargement of the previously limited balcony into a little terrace, giving the space that important external plug in. Here, fins were also devised to conceal circular columns and to create a sleek outward looking geometry, looking onto landscape views of Mgarr.

In terms of the soft furnishings and colour scheme, the architects used a timber base as flooring, and a host of textiles and leathers in brown/grey tones. This contrasted by the lacquered white and warm colours – as well as the slate and black – cemented the composition together. One of the key requirements of the brief was to create a minimal space, yet a warm and comfortable one. “By using a palette conducive to such a feeling on a psychological level, we achieved this. We love to use parquet as a practical functional background because it gives a great sense of warmth. Here it was a perfect match, as it softens the apartment experience. Other soft furnishings, such as the upholstered textural fabric sliding doors in the hallway contribute to better warmth complimented by preferable acoustics to support that warmth.

WHOLE ROOM SOLUTIONS
It’s not an uncommon necessity to squeeze a home office into another room. If your home work space is seldom used, it’s a good idea to set aside a desk space, then dress it to display interesting items, relevant or not. This way, part of it is clear for when use of it is desired, but then it will also look nice when it’s not being used. However, it can be tricky to make a multi-purpose room work without it all becoming chaotic. Storage is the key: if you invest enough in it – or at least a desk with some storage space – clutter can be kept to a minimum. A good idea for less crammed spaces is to use a shelving unit as a room divider in order to screen off the desk area from the rest of the room. Alternatively, hiding the office space behind built-in units can also keep the room look neat and streamlined. Sticking to the same colour theme throughout a room helps the practical, office part of the room blend in with its surroundings. Also, choosing furniture that doesn’t necessarily look like office furniture is extremely helpful.
AWKWARD SPACES
If you have to squeeze your home office into an awkward space, an excellent solution is to build in the home office furniture. A lot of furniture companies specialise in this type of bespoke
furniture and also ensure that you install the lighting and wiring right at the same time so that you can work in comfort. If your home office has to fit into an alcove of a room, highlight the background with a pale shade to create a calm work zone, and choose slim, shapely furniture that won’t dominate the space. Even better is to keep the space as under-furnished as possible, opting for clever storage systems and a desk that won’t overwhelm the space. Place the desk along the shortest wall if the room is very narrow, but stick to the longest walls if you want to make the most of space. Using wall-to-ceiling bookcases is a great space-saver, and will also automatically create a contemporary feel.
COLOUR
If you want a busy space to feel less so, it’s important to choose a calming colour scheme (neutrals are soothing) and coordinate it as much as possible – from wall colours through to accessories. An all-white scheme is a good base to start with, especially in a room that doubles up as a living and/or dining space, but accents and accessories can be bold in order to add interest. If your work is creative, it might be in your interest to go for a bold, contrasting colour scheme. Do this by sticking to one main shade, then use two to three accent shades for the best effect.

ight has always played a crucial role in our lives. More and more people are beginning to appreciate the significance of the commodity of light in our lives, particularly in our environment. A number of developments over the past 50 years, especially in the last 20 years, have changed our opinion and position towards light and its use considerably. Having a specialist lighting design profession, which has been established and sustained over the last two decades has fostered awareness that lighting is more than simply a matter of calculating lux levels or choosing aesthetically pleasing fittings rather than considering the quality of light they produce. Light is both an art and a science, and in the words of British Architect Norman Foster: “If the spaces that we create do not move the heart and mind then they are surely only addressing one part of their function.� Understanding the arrangement of light and shadow is crucial if we are to enjoy and use space effectively. However, there are other familiar yet key factors that have transformed lighting design into a distinctive profession. Choosing efficient electric light sources in order to save energy without compromising the ambience of the lit surroundings requires expertise to utilise the full potential of natural light. There is also the technology factor to consider. The novelty of LEDs has been an innovation in lighting

and the ingenuity of modern lighting control systems have been gaining momentum in designing light and lighting systems. Lighting has many functional roles beyond simply rendering our surroundings visible. It reveals the richness of materials, the rough texture of concrete, the translucence of etched glass, and the golem of polished granite. Light does not only have intensity, but it also has vibration capable of roughening a smooth material or giving a three-dimensional quality to a flat surface. All lighting schemes should, of course, be a carefully balanced composition, a considerate combination of light and shadow, less light and more light, cool light and warm light. Creating contrast is crucial. However, ensuring the correct light balance is fundamental to the overall lighting effect. There is now an overuse of coloured lighting in inappropriate settings – a situation provoked by the introduction of LEDs and the use of DMX control systems in the architectural field. Very often the unprofessional accedes to the use of the 16 million hues that such technology offers. As always, context is central. Entertainment and leisure venues are the conventional candidates for the visual pleasure and excitement of colour and dazzling lights. Used carefully, coloured lighting can make a powerful statement even in such
conservative surroundings. However, most light arrangements and design shows that subtle, white light schemes are often the most compelling and evocative. Whether featuring an overt decorative element or a discreet lighting effect, the most successful outcomes are generally those where lighting is given its due attention at the planning stage so that it can be integrated within the architecture. As well as creating a seamless result, where light is predominant and the fitting carefully concealed, this also allows due consideration for the finishes, which can have an enormous impact on the lit space. The alteration from white to black or from gloss to matt will have a profound effect on the resultant light levels (either too much or too little), and create issues such as unwanted reflections and glare, as the surrounding materials accordingly absorb, reflect and refract the light. Lighting and architecture must be viewed as a composite, and the stronger the collaboration between architect/ interior designer and lighting designer the more harmonious and successful the result. “Without light there is no life, without life there is no creation, no art, no architecture, no vision and no expression.“

L
he sitting / living room can truly be described as a room for all reasons. It is used for relaxation and the entertainment of guests, as a study, playroom, music room and also as a library – it is a complex area to plan, to decorate and least of all to light up properly. The best way to approach the challenge is to imagine an average day and then make a list of the ways in which the sitting / living room is used. This will offer a starting point for the lighting scheme, whether it’s a matter of making the best of existing facilities or of starting afresh. If the living room is used right throughout the day and evening, or for specific tasks, then you’ll need a
number of different levels of lighting, as well as lighting types. Take into account the different atmospheres you want to conjure up. The answer you surmise will help you decide how bright the lighting needs to be, as well as how easy it will be to dim. Overall, it’s worth using fittings that can be dimmed – from pendants right through to table lamps, and also recessed soffit lights. Wall lights are an excellent way to provide some soft, low-level light, creating atmosphere and warmth. Getting the proportions of your light fittings right is just as important as the quality of light they’ll give. Have you got room for a large, ceiling pendant, which will be the focal light of the room? Or
When watching television, it’s ideal to have another light source other than the screen. It’s important not to position lamps at the same level as the television, next to or opposite it – if you do so, you will eclipse the picture you’re trying to watch. maybe will a row of trimless, recessed lights be more suitable for the layout and size of the room? The height of the ceiling / soffit must be taken into consideration at the design stage. Another important fact to consider is whether the room actually has a lot of natural light or whether there are dark corners in your sitting / living room that need extra care and attention when it comes to the lighting design. Floor and table lamps can be useful in providing pools of light throughout the day and evening and are an attractive way of brightening up darker areas when soffits are not an option and therefore overhead lighting cannot be installed. It’s important to ensure that the lighting is balanced throughout, especially if the room is large, or zoned into different areas (such as a library, a lounging / TV area and a study). Each part of the room has to have adequate lighting for its purpose, but ensure that no particular area will overpower any of the other areas once all the lights are on. The different lighting areas must work as a whole when the room is being used wholly. Ideally, each different area will have its own accent lighting. LIGHTING GUIDE HW The light temperature of a fitting is an important fact to consider, as is the direction of the lighting being used, for these both can change the overall effect of a room. Lampshades, particularly opaque or darkly coloured ones, throw light both up and downwards. Pale coloured, translucent lampshades throw a soft light in all directions. Spotlights / soffit lights with a tilt can highlight a particular area of a room. Wall lights throw light softly (if dimmable) either up or down. It’s important to get the light going in the direction you want it to. The light fittings must compliment the rest of the finishes in the room. Lights aren’t just practical – they can be extremely decorative, too. So, when choosing fittings for your living room consider the colour scheme, furniture and basic materials being used throughout (is white better than natural aluminium or black?) When watching television, it’s ideal to have another light source other than the screen. To avoid eye-strain, try positioning low wattage LED’s in alcoves, or use wall uplighters near or behind the screen to bounce indirect light off the wall. It’s important not to position table lamps at the same level as the television, next to or opposite it – if you do so, you will eclipse the picture you’re trying to watch. Lighting is the best way to accent a picture or sculpture. Adapt the type of bulb or LED source to suit the artwork accordingly. There is a solution to every focal point in the room. Good lighting is a luxury that everyone can afford. It greets us in the morning and is often the last room to see us before we hit the bed. Apart from this, the bathroom is a place to invigorate ourselves, a place to draw a relaxed bath at the end of our week, a place to examine our bodies, satisfy our vanity, a place to escape to, and a place where we prepare ourselves to face the outside world. This variety of activity requires different types of light. The initial consideration when designing bathroom lighting is to cater for a combination of lights fittings, which can be controlled separately. A combination would allow for the more powerful light to suit our vanity, ambient lighting for our bath or shower, and minimal lighting for that middle of the night visit. We all want our skin to look good and have the right colouring, and this can be achieved with the right lighting. As a result, it’s important to avoid cast shadows on our face as we stand in front of the mirror. This is one of the most common mistakes that we come across when refitting a bathroom, as we often find a single light point located on the ceiling at the centre of the room. This results in a backlit effect for the person standing in front of the mirror with cast shadows down the face. In order to achieve the right lighting designers try to plan lighting that illuminates the face symmetrically from side to side. This is reminiscent

of a Hollywood star’s make-up room with a mirror studded with light bulbs. Although this is generally not the look that we strive to achieve when designing bathrooms, we try to achieve the same benefits by using alterative light fittings, such as linear strip lights, mirror lights, and recessed or integrated within furniture. In addition to the location of the fitting, it’s important to specify lamps that mimic daylight and have the correct colour temperature (varying from
2700K-3000K). Ideally, bathrooms are planned to possess a good source of natural light. When designing lighting over and around the bath or shower area, designers often specify recessed overhead light in order to achieve an ambient light. The integration of a simple dimmer can help to reduce the brightness and to create a soft ambient lighting unless we decide to opt for the age-old flickering of candlelight. The planning of the lighting installation
is an essential part of designing a bathroom. Ideally, the flexibility is available that’s required to combine a variety of lights. A suspended ceiling is often specified, as this allows distribution of the light points as required, as well as to work with less expensive light fittings. This could make use of the added depth to reflect light onto existing walls and/or mirrors. Another important factor is that the fittings specified have the correct IP (Ingress Protection) rating, and this varies depending on the location of the fitting and its proximity to water or moisture. Beyond the functional aspect of the location and type of lighting, there is also the selection of fittings, which can contribute to the design of the bathroom. Designers opt for fittings that reflect the design intent and help to create an integrated scheme. These can vary from modern technical fittings to classical decorative fittings. This must be done with consideration of the space and the limitations it can present. Only very careful planning and the correct detailing can enable the achievement of a bathroom that delivers the lighting that is required, keeps in line with the technical standards in place, is pleasant to the eye, and one that suits all the demands bestowed upon it. ood bedroom lighting design ensures visual comfort by enabling one to walk around the room at night and offer a welcoming tone for the day. Lighting a room depends on the size of the room, apertures and location (north or south facing). Big rooms need more lighting when compared to small ones.

To develop the lighting concept, it’s important to observe and understand what each person wants to experience before going to bed or when waking up. This is determined by the individual’s sleeping patterns, sensitivity to light and other uses related to the bedroom, such as watching TV, reading, dressing up or listening to music, as well as how they interact within the space. The images of bedroom lighting and design projects here are naturally well lit; one having a large opening overlooking a small garden, the other being a narrow long space with a relatively large window at the far end. Two very different concepts were applied. One concept was designed to emphasise how the space changes, transforming from day to night as the sun goes down and artificial lights are turned up. The second concept aims at transforming a long and narrow space into one which is more dynamic by creating a visual dividing line through change in materials, and trying to create
horizontality by using linear strip lighting and high level, as well as full length mirrors. In one bedroom, the choice of materials, such as red translucent and sand blasted glass and mirrors contribute to introducing more light and creating points of interest with natural sunlight. Blinds control the quality and quantity of natural daylight coming into the room, but also interact with the outdoors by creating shadows, which add softness to the bold design. As the sun goes down the yard is blackened out, and the bedroom becomes a more intimate and cosy space. Lighting is mainly indirect, apart from three spots, which give a warm ambient light. There are recessed light fittings on either side of the bed, together with the indirect light coming through the sand blasted glass to create an excellent light for reading or watching TV. A recessed fluorescent tube above the desk gives sufficient light to work with, while decorative lighting by use of pink LEDS fitted into the red shelves. There is a clear gradual mood change from bright daylight which brings the outdoors in by shadows created by the lemon tree. Dusks works well with the functional indirect light which give the room a softness, while the coloured
RGB led at night transform the room completely giving it a bold feel. And when the lights are switched off the large opening becomes a panoramic view of a star and moonlit sky. In the second bedroom, the lighting design concept is to use light, materials and volumes to visually divide the room in two. A recessed strip LED in the timber bulkhead runs into what seems to be the next room as the occupant lies in bed, creating a sense of space and horizontality. Bedside reading lamps are surface-mounted and rotate 360° to light the wall behind the bed or bulkhead, and add softness to the room. Two halogen spots at the back of the room light the plant and the wardrobe, while diffused recessed LEDs light up the main changing area, also acting as a general light. Here again, full-length mirrors enhance the light to help transform the volume. The bedroom is one of the rooms that needs special attention during home designing. Due to the fact that it is where we rest after a long day’s work, there is a need to consider comfort and relaxation. EDs (Light Emitting Diodes) consist of a silicone chip that iluminates when a low voltage current passes through it. The technology has come a long way since their introduction into the general lighting field some years ago. The main factors that make up the composition of a good quality LED lamp are: Light Output (measured in lumens per watt), Light Colour (measured in kelvins), Lifetime (measured in hours), and Light Quality (measured in CRI – Colour Rendering Index, or Ra). Consumers often have difficulty distinguishing between LEDs and energy saving bulbs. Energy savers are what they are called: energy savers! They were a quick fix to the market originally dominated by the old inclandesent bulbs. They consume around around 70% less compared to conventional bulbs, but have a very poor light colour. Most of them take time to warm up, do not like to be switched on and off frequently, and last around 10,00015,000 hours. They are also damaging to the environment, as they are filled with hazardous chemicals like mercury. Quality LED bulbs are superior to energy saving bulbs in many ways. They usually last a minimum of 25,000 hours – double the lifetime of energy savers. They consume even less energy (85% compared to incandescent bulbs). LEDs don’t just burn out like normal bulbs, but their light diminishes over time. After 25,000 hours, the fitting should still be functional, giving an adaquate output of about 70% of the initial brightness. The following aspects should be taken into consideration when selecting the right LED bulb:
LUMINOUS FLUX This value indicates the total amount of light without considering the direction of light output and is measured in lumen [lm]. So this is the most important parameter for determining the brightness of a light bulb (“lumen is the new watt”). Consumer organisations give the following rule of thumb: Watt of the incandescent bulb x 10 = minimum lumen required for the LED (i.e. 10 W incandescent bulb = min. 100 Lm LED lamp). COLOUR TEMPERATURE The unit Kelvin [K] is used to measure the colour temperature of light. A burning candle has approximately 1500K; an incandescent light bulb 2700K, and sunlight around 6500K. The lower the value, the “warmer” the light appears. If you want to replace a warm white incandescent lamp 1:1, you should you look for 2700K. There is a big difference between 2700K and 2800K, and even larger to 3000K. Warm white starts at 2700K downwards, while upwards the light becomes cooler and neutral. It is important to consider the colour temperature when purchasing, as it is much cheaper to produce 2800K or 3000K than 2700K, and get the same light output.
LIFETIME The lifetime is measured in hours: • The old incladesent bulbs last around 1,000 hours • Energy savers last around 10,000 15,000 hours • LED bulbs last around 20,000 - 25,000 hours It is hard to verify the lifetime indications especially with cheaper, unbranded products. Be weary of cheap, unbranded bulbs claiming to achive 50,000 hours. You will be better off choosing a decent brand which gives you 25,000 hours. COLOUR RENDERING (CRI OR RA) To describe the quality of light from light sources, the so-called colour rendering index (CRI or Ra) is used. Incandescent bulbs, by definition, have the highest value of Ra = 100. It is necessary that a colour rendering index of at least 80 is achieved. Important: Ra > 80 indicates a good light quality, while Ra = 90 stands for an excellent light quality. LED bulbs are state-of-the-art Caution should be exercised with remarkably cheap and unbranded products, as they tend to have weaknesses like a short lifetime, a cooler colour temperature, or a very bad CRI.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY High or low wattages is not a clear indicator of performance or brightness. The wattage of a lamp is for guidance only. Output is measured in lumen. When choosing an LED lamp, look for ’lumen output per watt’. A 7W lamp with a 320 lumen output (45.7Lm/W) is more energy efficient than a 5W with a 200 lumen output (40Lm/W).

he bitter orange citrus tree (Citrus aurantium) offers an incredible intoxicating fragrance that lasts several weeks in spring. Common in Malta, this tree is also known as the marmalade orange or Seville orange tree, and the bitter orange fruit is often used for essential oils, as well as for marmalade.

The large evergreen shrub or small Loquat tree (Eriobotrya japonica) offers fragrant cream flowers in autumn and winter and produces a delicious sweet yellow fruit, which ripens in early spring. Apart from being extremely tasty, loquats are good for you too, as they’re low in saturated fat and sodium, and are high in vitamin A, dietary fibre, potassium, and manganese. The Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) is an evergreen flowering shrub with pea-like foliage and fragrant, brilliant yellow flowers in spring and summer, followed by slender pods. Greatly varying in size and height, the bay tree (Laurus nobilis) is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green, glossy leaves, which are often used as seasoning in Mediterranean cooking. The Pittosporum tobira is a species of flowering plant with very fragrant, cream flowers in late spring. Used frequently as an ornamental plant in landscaping and as cut foliage, the Pittosporum can grow quite tall and become treelike, as well as be trimmed into a hedge. The common shrub is droughttolerant and is fairly hardy, which makes it a good landscaping plant in Malta. Probably one of the most aromatic flowers in the world, jasmine (Jasminum) is a genus of shrubs and vines in the olive family and is easily grown in Malta. It contains around 200 species native to warm temperate regions of Europe, and is widely cultivated for the characteristic fragrance of their flowers.
Wisteria is a woody, deciduous, perennial climbing vine with vivid mauve, lilac or white flowers that give off a strong scent in spring. While the plant is a climbing vine, it can be trained into a tree-like shape, usually with a wavy trunk and a flattened top. There’s nothing that gives off a stronger scent than a varied herb section in the garden. With hardy herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, sage, mint and basil growing so easily in Malta’s climate, it’s not difficult to have a powerfully scented patch.

SPRING TIME: WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN? In March the ground starts warming up, which requires much of the spring planting, moving and dividing to be done before the hotter, drier weather sets in. This is the time to sow half-hardy annuals and to plant summer-flowering bulbs. Now is the time to finish pruning roses and to make sure there are no weeds or plants immediately around the base of the rose plant. Add a nitrogen and potassium rich fertiliser to your roses. Trim lavender bushes before spring growth gets under way. Curry plants (Helichrysum italicum) can be treated the same. Trim into a ball, but be careful not to trim down to the old wood at the base, as new growth will not form from here. Spring is the best time to divide perennials by digging up the whole clump, and dividing into smaller pieces. Either tease the clump apart or cut using a spade. Replant in groups of three or five for good displays the following year. In April, lift large clumps, and split with a spade and re-plant, which is the easiest way to increase your stocks of plants. Newly divided clumps
need watering if it gets very dry. Add a bit of fertiliser or lots of compost when you divide. In the vegetable garden, almost everything can be sowed by April: broad beans, peas, salad crops, carrots, spinach, beetroot, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, leeks and cauliflower. Remember to sow salads and spinach every two or three weeks to keep supplies going. It’s also time to begin seeding potatoes, and as soon as the ground is dry enough, onions and shallots can be planted. Take a look at climbers and see which ones need to be tied in to their supports. Make sure you keep up with weeding, as they will be growing strongly now. Anything that was in the wrong place last year can be moved now and should get off to a good start before it gets too hot.

Ingredients 2 slices of aubergine 1 tomato, ringed 1 mozzarella, ringed 2 slices parma ham rocket salad salt & ground black pepper olive oil
Method Cut the aubergine one-centimetre thick and grill at both sides. Season with the salt and pepper. Cut two slices of tomato and mozzarella. On the plate, layer the aubergine, tomato, mozzarella, and Parma ham, and repeat the process. Drizzle with olive oil and place the rocket salad on the side.

Ingredients 180g apple 80g strawberries ½ lemon zest 1tsp brown sugar 1tsp nuts 1tsp cinnamon 1tsp honey
Ingredients for the sweet short bread crust 450g butter (room temperature) 700g flour 200g icing sugar 2 eggs, beaten pinch salt
Method Cook the apple and strawberries for about 10 minutes. Then add the brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon zest. Put the pastry on a four-centimetre baking try and place the cold apple mix inside. On top, add the icing sugar, nuts and honey for glazing. 081
