EDITOR’S LETTER HW
Welcome to the big issue on small spaces. In this edition of HOMEWORKS, we focus on maximising limited space. As Architect Simon Grech states during his interview – ‘We’re interested in small spaces and how we can make the most out of them – this is where architectural challenge truly lies’ – good architecture and design is becoming increasingly linked to the maximisation of space, particularly in Malta. With space becoming such a commodity, so much can be achieved through clever design. The divergent homes in this issue illustrate different ideas and solutions for small spaces. Furthermore, we’ve packed in some great features, inclusive of Summer Styling (page 052), Made In Malta (page 056), and Super Shelves (page 064). This issue is also the very first to hold the new and improved A-Z Directory (starting on page 104). The section is extremely helpful with a myriad of different suppliers, alphabetised by service and product subject. Finally, a quick and easy reference for home improvement!

YVONNE WROTE: “My Sundays seem brighter and inspirational whenever there is a HOMEWORKS issue published. Thank you for all your hard work. At the moment my husband and I are renovating our summer vacation ground floor flat. There is a front patio (15 x 25ft), which we would like to transform into something appealing and aesthetically inviting. We would like to reuse items, which at the moment are being discarded. These items consist of old tables, a sofa, metal watering cans, small metal cages, old stools, etc. They cost nothing, but have great sentimental value to us. We would love to see an article explaining how we can make use of these items to transform our patio into a relaxation haven.”
Needs you! Readers are invited to submit interesting photographs and a brief description of their homes, which may be distinct in their architectural design. The principle guiding this most recent intervention by Dick van Gameren Architects, is one of sustainability and a drive to reinstate the lost relationship between house and landscape. Preservation of the existing house was paramount, which gave the first step towards a sustainable end-result. The physical bond between house and landscape has been consolidated by an all-glass pavilion attached to the living hall that reaches out to the brook flowing past the house. www.dickvangameren.com

The big issue on small spaces, the three homes featured in this issue of HOMEWORKS are all impressive examples of how well space can be designed to maximise the use of it. The first apartment featured was designed by our very own Publisher. Not only is the space a great instance of unobtrusively stolen space, but it’s also the inspiration behind the birth of HOMEWORKS (page 026). Meanwhile, Grech & Vinci Architects achieve a light-balanced, ever-moving and interesting space, with just under 50 square metres in Valletta (page 036). Also in Valletta, Architect Kenneth Zammit Endrich from Architect’s Studio brings us a striking bachelor’s pad, which is all about the materials, maximising space and sunlight (page 044).

in the beginning... HOMEWORKS creator and publisher, Marc Spiteri converted a Sliema apartment pre-HOMEWORKS era, maximising a small space, as well as designing it to accommodate his lifestyle (without the help of the magazine!). As a result, HOMEWORKS was born Photography: MAS Words & Styling: Lisa Borain

Open plan, yet well zoned; the dining area is clearly a space of its own, even though it’s sandwiched between the kitchen and living area. Marc’s extensive collection of wine is housed in a rack he built himself by deconstructing many little wineracks he bought from Homemate and reassembling into a 500 bottle wine rack
I
n 2002, HOMEWORKS creator and Publisher Marc Spiteri found himself in a small Sliema apartment that was in dire need of renovation. Having relocated first from Toronto, and then from a few years in Gozo, his knowledge of interior shops and services was limited. Marc, “There weren’t any credible local resources, or even just insights into the local industry. I wanted to see examples of other homes to see what was possible, but unless I talked about it at a party or social event, it was difficult to find out.” The moment Marc saw the Sliema apartment, he realised the potential of it. “I was really excited about it when I first saw it. In Toronto, it’s extremely difficult to find a place with such high ceilings and with detailing reminiscent of the twenties. Even if you do find them, everyone wants them, which makes them very expensive. In Malta it seemed that the locals didn’t appreciate the value or splendour of the Art Deco style. As a result, it wasn’t very expensive, and it was mine.” Even if he didn’t know exactly how to go about it, Marc knew what he wanted. “I always had a conversion in mind. Because the rooms were large – five metres squared – they afforded me to split the living/dining room.” 029
SPACES HW
Beautiful antique pieces like the solid mahogany wardrobe by Carmelo Delia built in the 1920s, which were once part of his grandmother’s dowry, present themselves in the most unexpected places. Room divider and hat boxes from Organised Living; dresses, hats and shoes from Monsoon; flowers and pots on the window ledges from Garden-It
Marc’s priority was a bright and airy space. Second to that – a comfortable room for his young daughter. With books and wine being two of his favourite collections, it was important for him to create a place to house them. He also wanted an overall cosy atmosphere, yet with an open-plan feel. Marc was keen on preserving the Art Deco nuances throughout the apartment, as well as adding his own pieces from different eras. Most notable are the orange Memphis chairs in the living area. Beautiful inherited antique pieces present themselves in the most unexpected places – the upholstered sofa, the wardrobe and armoire in the bedroom, for instance – working exceptionally well amongst the impossibly high south-facing windows that are largely responsible for the bright feel of the apartment. Inspired by the potential of the high ceilings and windows, Marc saw how such a bright and airy atmosphere could be created. He kept everything as white as possible, but then added in colour through strong accents, primarily playing off the colours in the patterned tiles. He designed and built the coveted chunky, floor-to-ceiling square-shelved bookshelf himself. Its white colour and well-thought out measurements make it extremely functional, yet entirely without interfering with the room in any way. A real Iroko wood parquet floor connects the rooms; the richness of the colour a striking contrast against the white. Each room carries different flooring, which helps to zone the areas. Both bedrooms and the living room carry the original Maltese tiling, which is a surge of colour against the white backdrop. The kitchen floor is home to an easy maintainable glossy beige gres tiling, while the dining room is a continuation of the connecting passage’s Iroko wood.
High windows painted in white bring in a feel of air and space. A retro chair taken from Marc’s mother’s dowry sits comfortably next to a modern desk and chair from BoConcept. Flamant table lamp and chair throw from Retroforma; boxes on desk from Organised Living; Sia plant from Floreal Home; flowers and pots on window ledge and watering can from Garden-It
A definite foodie and wine lover, Marc’s dining room was important to him. He wanted a layout that would enable him to chat to his guests while finishing off in the kitchen. Not a tidy cook by any means, the notion of a window overlooking the dining and living room was ideal – large enough to be in plain sight to guests, but small enough to conceal the worktop surface mess. 031

A bespoke kitchen from Carmelo Delia now sits where the bedroom used to be. A soffit was installed over the dining area which leaves about a metre in height between the ceiling and roof. This is a brilliant idea for storage space, as it’s entirely concealed, and doesn’t take up any floor space
The floor to ceiling wine rack in the dining room is highly functional, but is also an interesting focal point. Art Decoinspired dimmer pendant lights illuminate the table, creating a moody atmosphere when needed. In order to help define the space, as well as to keep the dining room cosy, Marc installed a soffit overhead, which leaves about a metre in height between the ceiling and roof. This is a brilliant idea for storage space, as it’s entirely concealed, and doesn’t take up any floor space. Originally the hallway was long and dark, with the rooms mainly off to one side. Marc’s solution to the darkness and waste of space was to create large opaque glass windows that open out with the courtyard below. This solved a lot of problems; it brought ample light into the space, turned a boring space into an interesting one, and offered ventilation. 033
HW SPACES
The bathroom offers a spa-like feel with its earthy colours and materials. Jacuzzi from Satariano; towels from Next Home
“The problem previously was that if you wanted that extra light in, you had to open the windows, which led on to the courtyard, and all the noises of the neighbours that came with it. It was chaotic and loud. By installing the opaque windows, I got the light in without the noise.” A surprise bonus was the discovery of a concealed fireplace in the living room. “I was so excited to realise that I had a proper wood burning fireplace! All of a sudden, in addition to high ceilings, I had this amazing feature as well. The tall windows in the same room make it suggestive of a Parisian apartment.” It took him approximately a year, but he ensured that every area of this apartment was either designed to accommodate his lifestyle, or to maximise the space, or both. Working full time and also taking care of his daughter, forced him to carry out the conversion at his pace. As a result of doing most of the renovation himself, it granted him time to fully realise what he wanted and what was needed – as well as to source exactly what he was looking for. As a result of this project, Marc invented HOMEWORKS, with the idea in mind that it would be a source of information to offer people like him a direction of how to go about things and where to find them. Mission fully accomplished. And hats off to this high-ceilinged, tall-windowed, space maximised, fireplace-equipped apartment in Sliema.

T
his St. Dominic Street apartment is the response to a seemingly simple brief: a flexible space for a single man that visits Malta frequently, allowing for both privacy and entertainment space. In a single floor apartment measuring fewer than 50 square metres in total, this request takes on a greater complexity. The architects’ reaction to the brief was to create a space that was as open as possible when the homeowner was in it alone, but which could then break down to create privacy for the accommodation of guests.
View upon entrance, which runs along the side of the box, past the kitchen. To create ventilation and light balance, the rear windows were converted into doors
Forming part of an old apartment block with a central courtyard, the original layout kept the space dark and poorly partitioned. The building was formerly a retreat for some priests from Gozo, which is why the apartments were broken up into such small units. Architect Simon Grech at Grech & Vinci, “That’s what’s interesting about the space, though – that it’s small and humble. We tried to keep the spirit of that.” The first step was to remove all of the interior partition walls. The architects wanted to delineate the space by using an offset glass and steel box containing the bedroom and ensuite shower room. As a result, the remaining space was largely self-defining. The entrance was reorganised so that the visitor comes in from one end and travels in, reminiscent of a snail shell.
Although the architect designed the kitchen predominantly in white, the beech top and backsplash softens the hard architectural lines and adds warmth 039

South-west facing bedroom, which means that it’s bathed in natural light all day long. Here, inside the box, the sense of temporary movement is highlighted. Even the customized open wardrobe hints at a lack of permanence. Bed linen and throws from One Two One Interiors; dhurrie from The Studio Collection at The Rug Company
As the vortex goes round and the centre is approached, areas can be shut and broken off, eventually reaching the centre – the private sleeping zone. Somewhat inspired by Jean Nouvel’s Lumieres kitchen, in which ‘surfaces engage in original dialogues in light’, the fact that shadows can be seen behind the glass box indicates simultaneous movement and privacy. “For instance, when someone is showering, you get this movement and can still see the human figure, which is interesting.” Upon entering the apartment, a glimpse in the space between the glass and the kitchen wall offers a partial view onto the dining area beyond. Walking towards this dining area and rounding the corner of the box, the dining and living areas are revealed. In an effort to provide further privacy – to accommodate guests for instance – there is a concertina door that can span the entire space dividing it into two rooms. This, along with the changing container of a glass box, is another indication that this is a space that lacks permanence, in which things can transform. The space is not static, but rather adapts to the needs of the moment. Another feature that highlights the ease of movement throughout the apartment are the three partially hidden access points to the central box. When open, these points afford views throughout the entire apartment and minimise repetitive movement.
Originally, the entrance balcony held louvered windows, while the rear held translucent windows. In order to create cross ventilation across the entire apartment (yet still maintain privacy), the windows were transformed into doors to the rear and the front of the apartment. The translucent box acts as a privacy barrier so that not all is revealed upon entrance when open. If the sun is coming from the back, or the light is coming from the courtyard, the box lights up. The muted light from the courtyard side, and the strong sunlight from the rear come together to create a balance of light. At night, everything reverses and the centre box illuminates from within, which can also change colour according to mood. The material palette was humble and customised, with glass, steel and wood. Plain local cement tiles in black and white were used for the flooring, whilst the glass box and custom fixed furniture elements were manufactured in steel and painted with a white finish. The hints of wood throughout bring in a sense of warmth (the standard marine plywood in the bedroom and on vanities, as well as the kitchen Beech wood). “Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre (which was also designed for a doctor) was something of a starting point for us. The homeowner’s profession and culture definitely made a difference to how we designed for him. The doctor side of him implied cleanliness and organisation, while the Dutch 041

side implicated an openness to space. The Maltese like to be contained and private, whereas the Dutch’s understanding of space is different – they’re far more open to being overt. Even the clothes rail in the bedroom is exposed, which would be odd for a Maltese person. ” The space is a complete contrast to the building’s surroundings and what’s presently there. Inside a swirl of old and dilapidated, here lies this sparkling vortex of a space; organised and minimal. The architects have managed to create a tremendously light-balanced, ever-moving and interesting space with under 50 square metres. Simon concludes, “We’re quite interested in small spaces and how we can make the most out of them – this is where architectural challenge truly lies.”

he client set a simple brief: simple forms, modern outlook but functional elements with a special emphasis on his deep affinity towards ‘natural’ materials and his love for the city where he was born and bred.

With this in mind, an approach where the qualities of all materials employed, whether natural or manufactured [glass, steel, etc.,] had to be of prime importance and natural textures, colour, outlook, and their ductile qualities had to be crafted into the design process leading to a calm, yet stimulating architectural space that encapsulated the surrounding sense of rich history whilst exploiting the location and opportunity to admire and be in contact with the city‘s everyday hum and drum. We talked, analysed, listened, explained, sketched, and modelled until finally sharing a vision. A spatial hierarchy was set with the entrance level lower floor housing the two bedroom areas with bath facilities. This level had to exude a “grounding” feeling, an entrance level that would serve as a platform to lead one to the upper level where the main living activities where accommodated. An abundance of natural light descending from the upper level via a cleverly designed staircase emphasised this sense of axis and direction, naturally leading one towards the upper, airy open plan levels. The materials used in the main staircase reflect the transitional effect between the solid grounding lower level to the lighter light filled upper spaces. This unit was designed to house the apartment storage needs from clothing, iron board, to an enclosed TV station etc., etc. The monolith continuous design of the unit keeps the entrance area clean and uncluttered whilst the introduction of backlit marble elements provides for an element of interest and material richness that complements the rich, dark, brushed effect finish nero corona stone floor slabs. The unit itself, though spray painted, was manufactured in veneered oak and pre brushed before the application of the spray painting in order to preserve the natural graining to the oak veneer. A recessed mirror skirting gave the unit a floating and lighter effect. A mix of Carrara marble and a deep red floor tile was used for the second bedroom area where the marble was used in a variety of finishes and textures depending on where it was being applied, as this flowed into the translucent glass clad shower suite. Carrara marble wall elements were mostly in either brushed effect or forced graining enhancing texture and material ductility. The bed floats over the red tiles, which complement the rest of the calming colours and timber textures within the room.

AM DESIGN ADRIAN MICALLEF Adrian’s product designing began with his father, when he worked with him in limestone decorating. At the tender age of 10, his father had began empowering him to gain experience by giving him the opportunity to assist in creating various limestone products, such as fireplaces, decorative pots, niche features and sculptures. These were then installed as water spouts in various decorative stone balconies, light features, garden water features, and stone stoves, amongst others. After finishing his studies at university, Adrian travelled to the US for a year to further his studies and gain experience working with various materials. There, he finished various products, which he made from tree trunks, different types of woods, plastics, metal, clay, and fibre. Today Adrian designs and builds a myriad of unique/ feature products at his workshop, such as light fittings, chairs, dining tables, stools, cloth hangers, shelves, distress furniture and anything that his clients require.

DOMESTICA CHRIS VASSALLO CESAREO & MARIKA CAMILLERI Domestica’s history begins over 35 year ago when founder Leo Vassallo Cesareo opened a factory producing high quality, durable, custom-made furniture. The company is now run by the children of the founder; Chris Vassallo Cesareo and Francesca Cassar. Before import liberalisation, Malta was the only country that built Berloni furniture under license. Today Domestica imports the full range of Berloni home and office furniture directly from Italy. On top of this, the Domestica factory in Attard produces a variety of tailor-made furniture pieces, kitchens, and wardrobes in any wood finish.
FINO + SONS CARLO FINO Established in 1935, C. Fino + Sons Limited is one of the oldest and largest furniture houses in Malta. Its traditional core business was furniture manufacturing before diversifying to enter the property and construction sectors in order to undertake major turnkey projects. The tradition of workmanship is safeguarded by the current Fino third generation who continue to build on the vision of the founders to ensure the production of quality furniture and works. The company’s aim is to continue mixing old traditions with the determination to keep ahead of future trends in home, office, and hotel furniture and furnishings.

JOINWELL ADRIAN GALEA & VANESSA BONNICI Founded in 1947 in the aftermath of WWII, Joinwell began winning contracts for the repair of war damaged doors and apertures. Contracts were won from the British services in Malta, as well as in Libya where a showroom was eventually set up by George Galea and his brothers Louis and Joseph, followed into the business by their younger brothers Vincent and Albert. In the 60s the brothers were joined by Maurice de Giorgio who brought in new products and expertise to the company. A contract with Gomme Industries of the famous G Plan brand allowed Joinwell to manufacture furniture under license. The company flourished and the product range continued to expand. In the 70s another license agreement was signed with Bevan Funnell to allow Joinwell to manufacture Reprodux furniture. This was another successful range, which kept the company’s workforce of 350 busy. In the 90s the company moved back to contract furniture and bespoke commissions, as well as the fit out and refit of super yachts. The company also began importing some of the best brands of furniture from Europe. In 2008 the company moved from its iconic showroom to a new, larger state of the art showroom designed by Demicoli & Associates in Qormi, which has already become a landmark.
STEM INTERIORS EMMA ARMSTRONG & STEPHEN HUNT After finding it very difficult to purchase large colourful lampshades for their own home, Emma Armstrong and Stephen Hunt set about designing and making them themselves. In 2006 they set up Stem Interiors and began producing lampshades for both residential and commercial properties. With Emma’s Soft Furnishings and Textile Design education at the London Guildhall, and Stephen’s professional cabinet making skills, the couple combined their talents to run Stem Interiors – the lighting and interiors shop that offers an exceptional selection of lighting, wallpaper, fabrics and various other interior items. Stem Interiors is one of the few shops in Malta to offer a style that can work in modern, contemporary and vintage settings. Their range of lighting is their true forte, with totally customisable lampshades, with sizes starting from 18cm shades, suitable for a table lamp, up to a super large 1.2 metre shade suitable for a floor lamp or pendant. What’s great about Stem Interiors is that you can match a lamp to any existing fabric or wallpaper – or get the exact design you want. Due to expansion, Stem Interiors is moving their premises from their Sliema shop to the Ta’Xbiex seafront.

IS MOULD DRIVING YOU UP THE WALL? Mould can grow on almost any substance when moisture such as condensation is present. Moulds, when they produce, make spores which can be carried by air currents and when these land on a moist surface they begin to grow. Mould feeds on nutrients such as cellulose which can be found in most papers and paints. Crown Trade Steracryl has a proven pedigree in the prevention of mould growth. Stringent testing by the PRA (The Paint Research Association) has found it to be an effective mould inhibitor over long periods of time.
It’s not just paint.

GET IT While ground covers are not generally considered feature plants, they nevertheless play an important spatial, visual and practical role in the development of a garden. Garden Landscaper Melina Scodanibbio offers her insight Words: Melina Scodanibbio
E
ssentially trailing, ground-hugging plants, ground covers are the lowest form of vegetation, acting as a ‘floor’ or foundation that supports more active elements in the landscape, such as trees and shrubs. Ground covers have a multitude of valuable uses. Planted en masse they have the function of visually tying different parts of the landscape together, creating unity. They soften the harsh architectural edges of paths, drives and steps and create a transition between a lawn or paved surface and taller plants. They are in fact the lowest tier of layered planting, where a gradual build up of height is developed usually from front to back, from ground covers through to the tallest shrubs and trees.
Creeping thyme
Convolvulus mauritanicus
Their typically rapid growth rate makes them a quick fix for brand new gardens or to cover unsightly patches of bare soil around mature shrubs and trees in older ones, providing an instant revamp. Although usually thought of as fillers, they can also be used on their own to emphasize interesting ground surface topography or to create two-dimensional patterns of colour and texture, while still allowing free vision and sometimes movement.

Ground covers are available in plenty of forms, colours and textures, from deciduous to evergreen, succulent to herbaceous, blooming or not Verbena
The practical uses of ground covers are even more numerous. Perhaps the most important one in our climate is that of reducing or eliminating the use of turf. As well as being better for the environment, this also drastically cuts down costly and time consuming maintenance. When fully grown, ground covers form a dense mat, which retains moisture in the soil, acts as an insulating cover, prevents weed growth and even promotes the formation of nutrient rich humus; rather than being cleared away, organic matter made up of leaves and other debris is concealed by the plants and is allowed to rot and return to the earth. This important natural cycle is often disrupted with a great deal of hard work to keep bare soil clean. Some densely rooted ground covers are also very helpful in stabilising slopes and controlling soil erosion. Ground covers are available in plenty of forms, colours and textures, from deciduous to evergreen, succulent to herbaceous, blooming or not. The lowest carpeting varieties form a neat, dense mat of constant height, sometimes barely a few centimetres thick. These are perfect planted between stepping stones or along paths and steps – especially some varieties, such as creeping thyme, which release their fragrance when stepped on. Slightly taller varieties are ideal as edgings, to add interest and fill in the gaps between shrubs and trees, or tumbling over the edge of retaining walls or planters. Combined with fillers or bulbs they make an attractive lower layer of planting.
Lantana montevidensis
Generally ground covers are more effective when planted in drifts of a single variety. Mixing too many different ones usually produces a muddled and disharmonious result, but there is 093

also a practical reason behind this. Different ground covers have different growth habits, some being extremely vigorous and fast-growing. Daintier and slower growing plants would soon be smothered and overrun by their stronger neighbours. Whatever the growing condition, there is surely a ground cover, which will thrive in it. Usually very tough little plants, they not only require little maintenance, but greatly reduce it as already mentioned. Even in shade and under trees, where little else will grow, plants such as Vinca minor (periwinkle) and Hedera helix (ivy) will thrive. Succulent ground covers are perfect in full sun while most others do well both in full sun and semi shade. When planting, make sure the soil is free of weeds that must be removed from the roots. Mulching around the newly placed plants will help prevent weed germination during their growth, and once they are established little or no weeding will be required.

Method For the meagre fish, sprinkle the skin with sea salt and grill the skin side until it becomes a nice colour and crispy. Then, finish in the oven for about five minutes. Clean and score the soft side of the calamari and marinate in olive oil, minced garlic and fresh herbs. Grill until soft. For the razor clams, cook in a pan with white wine, chilli and fresh herbs for about four minutes. Cook the French beans in boiling water for four minutes and season with salt, pepper, and extra virgin olive oil.
BEST WINE ACCOMPANIMENT 2012 GRAN CAVALIER SAUVIGNON BLANC - D.O.K. MALTA “A crisp, dry, refreshing white wine is required here; one that will not overpower the different seafood flavours, but one that is brusque enough to cope with the grilled flavours of the crispy skin of the meagre and the scored calamari. The herbaceous flavours of this clean Maltese Sauvignon Blanc will also work perfectly with the French beans, basil and mint. Serve well chilled.”
