EDITOR’S LETTER HW

Space maximisation is one of the principle elements of a designer’s challenge and accolade. This issue of HOMEWORKS focuses on clever design in small spaces, making the most out of the form and function of the home. Directly tying in with this theme is Jennifer Jo Barth’s ‘Storehouse Chic’ feature, bringing us playful inspiration to innovate the storage room with a wave of natural spring-time inspired colours and objects (page 42). Find some great ideas of how on utilise the extra awkward space a staircase often brings on page 55. An article on unique organisation ideas indicates clever ways to conceal that clutter (page 59). On a different note, this issue features a round-up of the most exciting designs and exhibitions at this year’s Milan Design Week, bringing you inspiration, as well as a head’s up of what lies in the year ahead (page 49). Trends happen in the garden too, which is why we’ve also included an article on this year’s outdoor inclinations on page 77. It’s the season for spring cleaning and what better way to focus on that than getting your storage in place? Happy sorting!

This issue’s homes celebrate big design in small spaces. We start off with a strikingly light and airy house designed by Pippa Toledo, which through the prevailant use of white, has opened up into a highly spacious home (page 020). Interior Designer Greta Apap Bologna cleverly converts an apartment to accommodate two bedrooms, as well as softens the strong architectural backdrop through elegant furnishings (page 28). Superhomes and Daaa Haus collaborate on designing a high-rise 14th-floor apartment at Fort Cambridge on page 036.

he homeowners of this now-striking villa wanted a completely new look. The previous décor of the house was dated with Perlato floors, heavy, rustic dark brown furniture, and brown internal doors.

T

Pippa: “The original layout of the house was decent, with well-placed windows, but as the colour scheme inside was very dark, it didn’t bring out the best of the space.” The original yellow walls and brown furniture were immediately discarded, and in order to make the limited space appear larger and airier, the use of white was used extensively in the redecoration. The new furniture was custom made and designed specifically for the house, and the white cabinetry made to stand out, contrasted against the soft grey backdrop. By removing some low dividing walls, as well as stone seating under the bay window in the living area, more space was created. The solution to the original poor lighting distribution was to install a false ceiling in certain areas and re-do the lighting layout. A classical chandelier was introduced over the breakfast table in the kitchen, which set the mood for a more glamorous look in the humble space. The timeless bespoke kitchen is the focal point of the openplan kitchen/living/dining area, and is as functional (with its hi-tech equipment) as it is attractive. The informal dining area is in the centre of the room with the custom-made lattice design furniture, which is utilised to informally showcase the homeowner’s dinner set. The cosy living room, which is integrated into this multi-purpose open space, enjoys a happy amalgamation of comfort, informality and warmth – in both a decorative and a literal sense. 023

The existing fireplace was in a natural stone finish, which made it look somewhat traditional. Giving it a coat of white paint, as well as squaring off the slanting canopy changed it into a more contemporary one. A complete re-design took place in the main bedroom. In response to the homeowner’s request for more wardrobe space, Pippa partitioned off an area to create a walk-in-wardrobe (which was possible due to the large size of the bedroom), simultaneously making the room cosier. The bed’s cover and cushions were custom made with cottons, linens, and velvets, each with its own subtle texture that added to the overall rich look in an understated way. “Like many aspects of interior design, the curtains have evolved into a simpler form of their former self; it’s more about letting 026

light in than keeping it out, which is illustrated through the interior design of the kitchen/living dining area this home.” In the study, streamlined bespoke bookcases were introduced to accommodate the homeowner’s requirements in contrast to the antique desk. The guest toilet was a quick fix, as the original wall tiles were retained, but the vanity was replaced with a bespoke one, while new wall lights and a mirror were installed. The final result of Pippa’s re-design was a striking mixture of light and airy, comfortable and warm. The homeowner: “We knew that the house had potential, but to live in it now after the changes have been made is a dream.”

THIS IS ME INTERIOR DESIGNER GRETA APAP BOLOGNA BRINGS HOMEWORKS A STRIKING APARTMENT OVERLOOKING PJAZZA TIGNÉ WITH A STRONG ARCHITECTURAL BACKDROP CONTRASTED BY SOFT, ELEGANT FURNISHINGS Interior Design & Styling: Greta Apap Bologna, Greta Design Photography: MAS Words: Lisa Borain

This is my getaway, my fantasy life. It’s pretty, and no one messes it up. It’s perfect. This is me,” the homeowner of this elegant piazza apartment says with enthusiasm.

“I can go out to shop, followed by an easy transition to dinner. Now that I’ve experienced the apartment on a daily basis, I’ve realised how effortless it is. I spend the summer days by the pool or out in Pjazza Tigné. I can spend a whole day here and never get bored. “My best friend bought a place here a while back, and when I saw what it was all about, I really wanted one. For a year and a half I looked at different spaces, which all fell through. Eventually the estate agent asked me why I was thinking of investing a lot of money in a place if I wanted to travel so frequently. He suggested buying something smaller and less expensive, since I didn’t really need such a huge space. When I walked into this apartment, I literally decided the same day that I would take it.”

The original architect’s strong structural backdrop of the apartment was balanced by the introduction of new, softer, contrasting materials and colours 029

HW SPACES

The owner was excited by the original architect’s strong structural backdrop of the apartment, but she wanted to balance it with some softness. She commissioned Interior Designer Greta Apap Bologna to create the contrast. “Greta was recommended to me by someone who has a good design sense, and I actually didn’t approach anyone else. I changed my mind about the brief quite a few times, but Greta and I immediately became friends and we found common ground quickly.” When the interior designer entered the picture, the apartment was one big empty concrete room with a structural pillar virtually in the middle it. Due to its architectural angle, it was highly masculine with almost utilitarian muted neutrals, such as black and grey, alongside a khaki green wall colour. Greta, “My starting point was listening to the owner’s brief, which in the end we realised was an American classic style overall. She also wanted a striking kitchen, as well as an extra bedroom. It was always about prioritising, working with a lot of different textures, and not being afraid of colour. Now, with the introduction of new softer materials, it’s full of contrast. Think suede meets steel, marble meets wood, and concrete meets velvet. “I felt that the floor and ceiling had to stay because I wanted to keep the original architect’s signature on the apartment. I wanted to add on to what he had left, rather than change it.” A false ceiling was installed in the kitchen to identify the zone and determine the kitchen area, as well as to create better direct lighting. By mixing the gypsum ceiling corner with the concrete, the contrast of the smooth gypsum touching the hard concrete would enhance the concrete even further. 030

‘‘I FELT THAT THE FLOOR AND CEILING HAD TO STAY BECAUSE I WANTED TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECT’S SIGNATURE ON THE APARTMENT. I WANTED TO ADD ON TO WHAT HE HAD LEFT, RATHER THAN CHANGE IT.’’

The hallway wall was born from a corridor that was too narrow to accommodate furniture. The interior designer wanted an accent feature point in this area without the usual (and safer) accent colour wall or wallpaper. In order to also accentuate the shadows, she chose the horizontal bamboo wave design to add to the length of the corridor 031

SPACES HW Greta went about contrasting the textures, such as introducing soft-to-the-touch chair upholstery, cushions, and curtains against the concrete. The designer’s solution to adding another bedroom was to create a black box to envelop the previous open unused space, and extend the panelling that was already there to make it feel as if the room had always existed. The hallway wall was born from a corridor that was too narrow to accommodate furniture. Greta wanted an accent feature point in this area without the usual (and safer) accent colour wall or wallpaper. In order to also accentuate the shadows, she chose the horizontal bamboo wave design to add to the length of the corridor. The open plan master bedroom includes a comfortably sized bathroom and open wardrobe. Greta installed an island complete with a fireplace that’s highly practical, providing extra surface space, and encasing storage. It was created by installing two sideboards back-to-back, then wrapping them in walnut wood, which ties in with the wood of the bed headboard. The softness of the wood mellows the strong black marble flooring. The velvet bespoke headboard – which includes shelving at the back – began with the position of the floor lights and the window. The bed could afford to be moved forward due to the depth of the room, which allowed A false ceiling was installed in the kitchen to identify the zone and determine the kitchen area, as well as to create better direct lighting. The velvet bespoke headboard – which includes shelving at the back – began with the position of the floor lights and the window. The bed could afford to be moved forward due to the depth of the room, which allowed the creation of the focal headboard piece, simultaneously incorporating much-needed additional ofstorage the focal headboard piece, simultaneously behind

the creation incorporating much-needed additional storage. Greta included extending classical lights that descend from the modern mirror feature that was already situated above the bed. The pillar in the middle of the apartment was incorporated into the kitchen design. Here, the corridor wall was extended to create a pantry, which tied it in with the kitchen. Originally, the kitchen had a U-shape design and was totally detached, freestanding from all walls. However, this wasn’t functional for the homeowner’s lifestyle, as it would have been too limited for her needs. She wanted to have the option of extra storage, as well as a wine fridge. Greta, “A home has to have a certain amount of things in it. You have to have them, but they can be concealed, which is why I believe in creating as much storage space as possible, wherever possible.” Marble was chosen for the kitchen island to add visual interest from the dining area. The natural veins of the stone create intense movement and as a result, the island has become an eye-catching focal point. Since the layout was changed so drastically in this area, the next obstacle was getting the electric and water services to the other side of the kitchen. The solution was to pass a channel ducting with pipe work, and going a step further, it was designed to incorporate the existing kitchen materials to tie it in. The sliding door to the pantry was clad in mirror to allow those sitting at the dining table looking inwards to have a more interesting view than just a pantry door. Furthermore, it also added depth to the kitchen. Greta felt that retaining solely neutral colours throughout the space could have left it flat, due to the grey of the concrete flooring and ceiling. “I wanted different tones of grey juxtaposed by a muted accent colour, and I felt that mustard yellow would work really well here. Also, with accents such as these, the owner can change the mood of the space easily.” Outdoor furniture added interest as well as function to the expansive terrace. The owner, “I like the feeling of life buzzing outside. It’s public, but not the typical public space in Malta. It’s organised and clean with good restaurants and coffee shops. Plus, it’s car free, which is fantastic. I can hear the fountain all throughout the day and night. Believe it or not, it’s a real community here, and it’s actually the first time I’ve ever gotten to know my neighbours. You meet people by the pool and then keep bumping into them at dinner or cafés. You go down and there’s everyone and everything at your doorstep. It’s living in Sliema at its best, sans the chaos and car noise. Also, it’s secure – even though it’s a public space, it’s very sheltered and private with full time security.” Greta, “Working on this apartment was so much fun. Not knowing the client at all and then becoming such good friends through the project was a wonderful experience. We were very similar in our priorities and tastes, so the decisions were quick and uncomplicated – I love that!”

The end result of combining the original masculine architectural backdrop with Greta’s soft and elegant furnishings was a hugely unique look, with an overall comfortable feel. This, coupled with the easy location makes this homeowner a very happy one: “I never realised how easy it was living here until I invested time in truly experiencing the lifestyle. Now, I really don’t want to go anywhere else!”

T

he Superhomes and DAAA Haus team immediately identified the potential of converting this once typical apartment layout into a more spacious and functional space. Project Manager Mario Camilleri: “Accepting and responding to the architectural nature of the apartment was paramount to transform the internal space into an open plan with two bedrooms. It’s been designed to offer a sense of comfort, and the critical decision at the start of the project was to make sure that every room enjoys natural light. To do this, we opened the bedroom up to allow light to pass through a large glass wall-to-wall partition/door that opened up onto the living room, which also made the apartment look substantially bigger. Further to this, we wanted to make sure that all rooms led onto one of the two surrounding terraces.” The 80 square metre wooden decked terrace is ideal for outdoor living with a 180-degree view of Manuel Island, Valletta and The Strand. A jacuzzi brings the element of water to the area, and extends onto an evergreen herb garden.

The colour palette is consistently neutral, comprising of whites, off-whites, taupe and muted greens, grounded by dark stained wood finishes to create a balanced and harmonious approach. In the evenings, the mood of the space now cosies up with warm hues of light balancing well with the perimeter lighting around the terrace, and the shining sparkle views across Marsamxett harbour. Storage was a high priority during the planning stages. The brief was to ensure that no washing machine or laundry basket was left grinding away in any corner. The team incorporated all the basic storage and utility requirements in their design, and devised numerous solutions to accommodate all the appliances and equipment needed to compliment the apartment. The bathroom was re-fitted and reduced in size in order to make room for a walk-in wardrobe, while beds were made to measure using not only the desired materials, but also to incorporate extra storage space. In the storage room, the AC was re040

organised to make space for a laundry room that includes a washing machine and a tumble dryer, while in the kitchen, units were fitted wall-to-wall and cleverly hidden out of sight by a corner library. The main entrance door was completely concealed by incorporating it in a wall-to-wall wooden cladding feature, which allows the living room to extend all the way to the main door. The end result of all the implemented design solutions was a 14-storey high floating deck; a spacious and functional apartment with the chic feel of an urban loft. “We believe in building things that we would like to live in. It’s the only thing we identify with. We tend to build what we like, and assume or hope that if we like it, others might too.

IS MOULD DRIVING YOU UP THE WALL? Mould can grow on almost any substance when moisture such as condensation is present. Moulds, when they produce, make spores which can be carried by air currents and when these land on a moist surface they begin to grow. Mould feeds on nutrients such as cellulose which can be found in most papers and paints. Crown Trade Steracryl has a proven pedigree in the prevention of mould growth. Stringent testing by the PRA (The Paint Research Association) has found it to be an effective mould inhibitor over long periods of time.

It’s not just paint.

ECO HW

SOME ECO IDEAS TO EXPLORE... WOOD COMPOSITE The new generation of wood composite offers all the benefits and beauty of wood without maintenance or harm to the environment. Use it for decking, wall cladding, fencing, pergolas, and a variety of outdoor furnishing.

SOLAR FILM There is a science behind today’s best performing window films. Jeffrey Shaw (JUST Ltd) highlights the numerous benefits of sun protection films ‘‘In sun drenched Malta very little is known about the numerous benefits of sun protection films, which can be easily installed (soap and water) to any flat glass surface – be it doors, windows or skylights. In other European countries, the US, Canada and Japan to name a few, governments are offering tax rebates (same as for PV panels and solar water heaters) on window films, since not only is there an energy saving benefit to the residential or commercial building owner, but also an environmental benefit (landfills). Contrary to what many may think, double glazed windows and doors do not reduce UVA and UVB rays (that cause fading and skin cancer), nor Infra-Red rays, which are the source of heat. For protection against these rays, special glass such as Low ‘E’ Emissivity glass and anti-UV glass would need to be specified (which is quite expensive). In today’s modern designed homes, glass is being given much more importance. However, the downside of great views and openness (light) is the fading of furniture, fabrics and artworks, as well as excessive heat in summer and heat loss in winter. It should also be taken in consideration that blinds and shutters darken and obscure the view without preventing heat intrusion, whereas sun canopies can only be used on windless days and will not prevent UVA and UVB rays from entering. Again, these options are not cheap or practical, and would change the scope and aesthetics of what the designer and architect had in mind.

GRF Design Concepts is currently offering 20% off their already favourable prices on wood composite GRF Design Concepts we have been installing solar protection glazing film in for the past 15 years. GRF, 117, Triq L-Assembleja Nazzjonali, San Gwann. Tel: 7942 4422. www.grfmalta.com

Sun protection film is the solution to protecting furniture, fabrics, floors and art, as well as reducing energy costs. Film stops the heat before it enters the glass system, and dramatically reduces heat loss in the winter and excess heat in the summer.’’ 047

MILAN DESIGN WEEK ARGUABLY THE WORLD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL AND FREQUENTED EVENT IN THE FIELD OF FURNITURE AND OF DESIGN, SALONE DEL MOBILE IS THE MAIN EVENT AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK. HOMEWORKS EXPLORES THE HIGHLIGHTS AND TRENDS FEATURED AT THIS YEAR’S SHOW

MILAN DESIGN WEEK

Cappellini

Print chair by Nendo This year, the strong demand for natural materials (especially for wood) continues. Nendo launched The Print Chair during their solo exhibition, which combines different wood grain patterns into one motif. The chair was created by overlapping different wood grain patterns onto existing timber surfaces. The seating objects became distinctive due to the implementation of new various grain details, such as those found in OSB laminate board, fir, pine and oak.

A tie on to this chronological theme was quality and design driven Italian brand Cappellini’s interpretation of three different stories that revealed “the universe of study and research of Cappellini”: Firstly, the production of an art project; secondly the evolution of a product towards a range widening to meet the needs of an increasingly cosmopolitan market; and also the development of a family of products to tell the story of the birth and growth of a progressive project.

‘Fairy Tales’ Slightly contradictory to the demand for natural materials, people are in the mood for more colour and fun again. Architects Laudani & Romanelli epitomised this with their playful tables entitled “Fairy Tales” – a tribute to the company’s history of producing children’s toys. The light-hearted idea behind the design is a random stack of inspirational books piled up that transport the readers into the world of elves, fairies and knights.

Table of the Universe Organised by Turkish Stones, the ‘Marble Across Time’ exhibition acquired a new form in its third edition this year. The exhibition was inspired by taking a chronological approach to the existence of marble from history to the present day and into the future. Most impressive was the Stone Table of the Universe by Tokujin Yoshioka, which “frees itself from gravity”.

‘Bard’

‘Tracks’ by Alain Gilles

Sofie Chair by Guggenichler More fun was brought to the fair by Guggenbichler’s orange Sofie chair (which was the winner of the Interior Innovation Award 2014) and Giulio Iacchetti’s ‘Bard’ furniture piece for Manie Design. Conceived as a tribute to Milan, the Bard is an upholstered piece of furniture with the dome shape and texture based on Enzo Mari’s concrete bollards, which were originally installed to stop people from driving onto the footpath (still prevalent throughout the streets today). “The piece applies the notion of comfort in an illusory way by transforming a notoriously hard and uncomfortable piece of streetscape furniture into a soft and inviting item.”

Alain Gilles’ Tracks is a an extendable table characterized by two parallel axes that define the logic of the piece and act as the path for the extensions, “just like tracks for a train”. The table is also a symbiosis of weight and weightlessness, cold and warmth, playing with the combinations of the wooden feet, the crystal table top and the lacquered steel structure. 051

HW TRENDS

MILAN DESIGN WEEK layering the shapes of classic chairs by three design masters (’Series 7’ by Arne Jacobsen, ‘Eiffel Chair’ by Charles Eames and ‘Tulip Armchair’ by Eero Saarinen) rendered in three dimensions to form the supporting back of the seat.

In terms of lighting, most memorable was the Numero 3 lamp designed by Patrizia Bertolini for Horm, which can be dressed with the same fabrics used for furnishing. The steel base that serves as a counterweight is designed so that it can be placed under the floor of a table to move the beam where more light can be useful.

The Fortress Table

Metallics, wire and steel made a heavy appearance this year. The Fortress Table by Swedish Designer Markus Johansson consists of solid steel that is bent into an organic shape. Constructed entirely out of one sheet plate, the design is reminiscent of industrial craftsmanship and features a rotating piece of angular metal strips.

April, May, June bookshelves by Gino Carollo The April, May, June lacquered metal bookshelves by Gino Carollo can also be used for storage and display. The original shapes of the bookshelves are reminiscent of precious perfume bottles.

B-LINE wire high stools

Collar Lamp by Nordic Tales Jordi Lopez Aguilo produced the Collar Lamp for the Danish company Nordic Tales. The lamp features an organicallyshaped lampshade that rotates on its base. Made from powder painted steel, the curved piece is mounted onto a solid bit of oak wood. Turning 180 degrees, the light source can be orientated in different directions and placed at the desired angle. Produced as both an up-light and a wall lamp, the diffusely illuminated surfaces highlight the contrast between the cold steel and the warmth of the wood.

PRISM by Tokujin Yoshioka for GlasItalia

Masters Chair by Philippe Starck for Kartell Italian design company B-LINE launched a different version of their wire chairs in the form of high stools, while Designer Philippe Starck transformed plastic into his glossy gold rendition of the Masters Chair for Kartell. Kartell noted that the re-imagined chair draws from “precious, noble and sophisticated material, while allowing it to retain its nature as an industrial material.” Originally designed in 2009, the Masters was formed by

052

Tokujin Yoshioka designed the PRISM Mirror Table for GlasItalia with thick, high-transparency mirror glass that utilizes the company’s signature cutting technique on the glass surfaces. Due to the refraction of the light (like a prism), the result is much like a reflection in water, which bounces surrounding images and light from its surface.

Numero 3 by Horm

Unique to the fair this year was the installation ‘Where Architects Live’, which was inspired by leading contemporary architects’ own concepts of the domestic space. The exhibition provided an exclusive glimpse into ‘rooms’ designed by eight of the world’s most respected architects: Shigeru Ban, Mario Bellini, David Chipperfield, Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, Zaha Hadid, Marcio Kogan, Daniel Libeskind and Bijoy Jain/Studio Mumbai.

CREATE A COAT RACK utilising the space beneath the stairs for an organised coat rack is not only super handy, but it can look great too. 055

HW SPACE MAXIMISATION MULTI-FUNCTIONING STAIRS The Object ĂŠlevĂŠ by Mieke Meijer has two parts: a more robust standing lower part with a desk inclusive of a hidden cupboard behind, and a lighter suspended piece largely consisting of open frames as shelves. Based on the Samba system of alternating steps, the staircase can rise at a steep angle but still remain safe and comfortable enough to climb up and down.

MAKE THE STAIRS THE STORAGE The nature of the shape of stairs lends itself to customised storage boxes, so why not build the entire staircase with the steps acting as storage boxes that open from different angles? SLIDING STORAGE A great place to conceal unsightly or seasonal objects, such as clothes or Christmas decorations.

CLEVER STORAGE AND ORGANISATION IS PARAMOUNT TO MAXIMISING A SMALL SPACE. HOMEWORKS BRINGS YOU SOME GREAT ORGANISATION IDEAS USE A COAT RACK Jewellery and scarves are difficult to organise. Even a jewellery box leaves the items clustered and tangled. Hang the most frequently worn necklaces and bracelets within easy reach on a funky wall-mounted coat rack.

USE GLASS JARS Glass jars are inexpensive and look good too. A step further is to attach the jars underneath a table or a shelf. Nail or superglue the lids to the underside of a surface, then twist the jars into place. This can work for loose items in any room of the house.

USE A PEGBOARD USE A DRAWER ORGANISER The must-have for good organisation: a drawer organiser. Not only does it make finding things so much easier, it also eradicates the banging and crashing when looking for items.

Keep tools of all shapes and sizes tidy with an adaptable pegboard. A pegboard with 6mm holes will hold more weight than other sizes. The holes will also be able to accommodate hooks in the other common sizes. 059

060

GET ORGANISED HW USE A MAGNETIC RACK Magnetic racks are brilliant for holding utensils, as everything can be seen at a glance. If organised well, they actually look quite good, too.

USE SHOWER CURTAIN HOOKS

USE A CUTLERY ORGANISER

If space allows, place hooks on a closet bar and hang handbags and umbrellas from them to keep them at eye level. This is a great way to eradicate a mess of accessories on the closet floor.

Use a cutlery organiser in a drawer to store jewellery or make-up.

061

HW GET ORGANISED

USE TROUSER HANGERS Use trouser hangers to store boots for better shoe care, as well as extra space at the bottom of the wardrobe.

USE A POT HANGER Save space and see all your pots and pans at a glance by using a pot hanger.

USE A TENSION ROD

USE MAGNETIC SPICE CONTAINERS This brilliant idea allows spices to be seen at once and is also indicates clearly when a spice is running low. The best place for them? On the side of the fridge. 062

To keep pot lids from rattling around and getting lost in kitchen drawers, position a short tension rod to create a divider. Stack pots and pans in the larger section and lean lids against the rod on the smaller side. A tension rod is also a good idea to keep the cleaning product cupboard uncluttered by hanging spray bottles from it.

As a result, Flanders Field poppies are expected to make a big appearance. Also the trend for English native wildflowers popularised by the London Olympic meadows seems to be prevailing (with plants such as ragged robin). Impatiens are being replaced by Begonia as a bedding plant, since impatiens have been plagued by mildew problems. For the Chelsea Plant of the Year, the sea holly Eryngium ‘Neptune’s Gold’ looks like it’s in the forefront. Sunflowers are also expected to be superstar flowers this year.

NEW VEGETABLES Internationally, Kale is being branded as a ‘super food’, especially in baby leaf form. Sales of curly kale at Marks & Spencer are up 32 per cent on last year – a trend expected to continue.

NEW FOR PURCHASE Quirky products are big this year (such as penguin solar lights). There’s also an emphasis on making things accessible and easy. Items such as sprinkle and go seed, fertiliser and compost products (such as Flower Magic) are gaining popularity.

ALLOTMENTS One theme will be the idea of enjoying plots for leisure, rather than for just growing. The Horticultural Trades Association in the UK is developing a campaign to get 30-45 year-old inexperienced gardeners to enjoy their plots more.

PESTS & DISEASES Due to an outbreak of pests and diseases, sweet chestnut, horse chestnut and ash are now being rarely planted. As this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, the City of London Corporation is sponsoring a Chelsea garden for the first time to highlight the issue of oak processionary moth (OPM).

THE RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW THIS YEAR Alan Titchmarsh has been appointed as an ambassador to help focus the charity on young gardeners and designers. A Plant of the Year will be announced and will be quickly available for sale in RHS shops and be displayed prominently in its gardens. New for 2014, ‘Discovery’ showcases the best scientific and educational exhibits from the world of horticulture. An evocative and colourful display will celebrate ‘Thailand: Our Pride, Our Monarch & Our Cultural Heritage’, whilst ‘Nature’s Helpers: BeesButterflies-Bugs’, will highligh ways in which cut flower producers can work in harmony with pollinators and beneficial insects. A herb garden inspired by Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit stories will feature an exciting fusion of garden design and floristry. 079

PRAWN AND SQUID INK RAVIOLI Ingredients (Serves 2) 150g fresh prawns 10g garlic, crushed 40g onions, chopped 40g leeks, chopped 8 pc cherry tomatoes olive oil fresh herbs

For the dough 250g 3 10ml 1tbls

Method flour ‘00’ egg yolks olive oil squid ink salt

For the dough, blend all the ingredients together and add some water if needed. Leave to rest over night. For the stuffing, begin by frying the onions, leeks and garlic until soft, and then add the prawns and season well. Serve the ravioli with some shallow fried cherry tomatoes with some fresh herbs and olive oil.

BILL’S WINE RECOMMENDATION: 2013 MEDINA GRENACHE ROSE D.O.K. MALTA “To accompany this delicate, but full flavoured dish, I have chosen a fruity, crisp refreshing, dry rosé wine that will marry perfectly with the fresh prawns and sautéed cherry tomatoes. It will also cope well with the heavier squid ink flavours, thereby refreshing the palette ready for each mouthful. But to enjoy this wine at its best, chill the rosé down so that it’s nice and cold.” 082

CHICKEN WITH BRIE CHEESE & ONION CHUTNEY Ingredients 2 chicken breast 40g brie cheese 200g onions 20ml balsamic vinegar 20g brown sugar 20ml red wine vegetables for grill Method For the onion chutney begin by finely slicing the onions and fry them until soft. Then add the sugar, balsamic vinegar and wine, cooking on low heat for about one hour. For the chicken, fry in a pan with some butter and oil until nicely golden brown, and then continue cooking in the oven for about 10 minutes. Make a cut in the chicken on one side, and stuff with the chutney and sliced Brie. Serve on grilled vegetables with some fresh thyme.

RECOMMENDED WINE ACCOMPANIMENT: 2012 GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE VIOGNIER - D.O.K. MALTA “A robust, yet clean dry white wine is required to accompany this dish, which has a few strongly flavoured ingredients, such as caramelised onion chutney including balsamic vinegar, pan fried chicken and creamy Brie cheese. The fullness of this Malta-grown Hauteville Viognier will once again partner these ingredients perfectly and refresh the palette in between bites. Serve chilled.”

CASSATELLA Ingredients 150g sicilian ricotta 30g icing sugar 40g chocolate, chopped 30g mixed candied peel marzipan sponge, sliced tin fresh fruit for garnish

Method Mix the ricotta with icing sugar, chopped chocolate and candied fruits. Start layering the Cassatella by placing the sponge first, then the ricotta mix, then sponge and ricotta again. To finish, roll the marzipan tin and place on top. Leave to rest for about two hours in the fridge before serving.

RECOMMENDED WINE ACCOMPANIMENT: 2013 CASELLA MOSCATO I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS “There’s no rocket science involved here; good honest sweet Muscat or in this case Moscato will go perfectly with this delicious dessert. Icing sugar together with the candied peel, the chocolate, the marzipan and the sweet Sicilian ricotta will make the delicious, sweet ‘marmalady’ Maltese Casella Moscato a perfect accompaniment. Once again, serve it nice and cold.”
