EDITOR’S LETTER HW
This Architectural & Design issue of HOMEWORKS is a truly creative-packed one. Not only do we feature some spectacular homes designed by both established and new Architects, but we’ve also included the results of the HOMEWORKS Architectural Awards. This is the commemorating year for the awards, and the results have been immensely encouraging. Not only have Malta’s best Architects taken part, but the projects submitted were highly impressive. See what you think of the judges’ decisions on page 044. Further to keeping in tune with this issue’s theme, ‘Where Architects Live’ (page 053) is an interesting insight into the personal homes of some of the world’s most renowned Architects. This issue also brings you an article on flooring, highlighting different materials to consider while exploring their maintenance, durability, longevity, and resistance (page 059). Page 065 offers a showcase of sofas, exposing what’s available this season. Also not to be missed is Landscape Designer Melina Scodanibbio and Interior Architect Eliza Costabel’s feature on the design planning of an empty outdoor space into an African-Mediterranean fusion (page 076). It’s the ideal way to end the A&D issue - with great planning and fantastic creativity!

“There is a lot to be said when it comes to energy efficiency, but what is true and what is myth? What will pay off and what won’t? What should be considered when renovating or when moving homes that will pay off in the long run? What will really reduce our carbon footprint, and what is negligible? What are our luxuries (big and small) really costing us in both financial and environmental terms? The answers to these questions is what I would like to see in future editions of HOMEWORKS. In the meantime, keep up the good work!”

CASA ELLUL A new jewel in the crown of the Valletta-based studio Chris Briffa Architects is the renovation of Casa Ellul in Valletta. “The experience of lodging in a classic Victorian period house on the lower floors, in contrast with the contemporary spaces on the rooftop was the prevailing design concept: from the hotel’s layout, to its complex services infrastructure, to the interior detailing and furnishing.” Each suite is altogether different from the other, with a particular attention to the bathrooms – a signature element in Briffa’s projects. ARCHITECTS CHRISTOPHER MICALLEF AND DAINE PRANAITYTE MICALLEF CONVERT THEIR OWN 1970S-BUILD HOME IN ST. PAUL’S BAY Architecture: Christopher Micallef and Daine Pranaityte Micallef, Forward Architects Photography: Tonio Lombardi Styling: Jennifer Jo Barth Special Thanks: Dex, Ideacasa, camilleriparismode Words: Guy Laguens
When we acquired the house, the prospect of converting a 1970’s house, close to the sea, overlooking a private garden, and having its own roof terrace was very exciting. We knew from the outset that this was going to be our architectural playground,” Architect Christopher Micallef begins.
“
Originally forming part of a traditional 1970’s modernist house, this home is located at first floor level. The internal arrangement was set over a number of rooms consisting of a kitchen, living and dining area at the entrance with three bedrooms at the back. All the rooms were planned on a single floor with a small roof room at roof level.

The new home arrangement opens a sense of discovery through the three levels of the house. The private quarters are located on the first floor, while the living quarters are stepped upwards from the family theatre at entrance level to the kitchen, living and dining areas at various levels above. The architects stayed true to the same materials throughout the house, such as birch plywood, concrete, and leather

SPACES HW “Before attempting any designs, we settled in with no structural changes. That gave us time to discover and absorb the house s main attributes, as well as to develop a site specific brief designed around the rituals of our everyday life.” A few years later after various sketches, thoughts and ideas, the architects closed in on their final ideas. The brief they developed outlined the need for some additional living space: a larger kitchen (central in its location), a small courtyard (which would allow the family to make use of the external space in summer, as well as in winter), keep the number of bedrooms to three, and finally open up unimpeded views of the sea and garden below, simultaneously introducing environmental solutions to avoid heat gains in summer and maximise on the air circulation from the sea breeze below. “From an architectural standpoint, the extension was to also be seen as a physical expression of our personal thoughts and ideas. The transformation was to be bold in its volumetric expression, playful in its light movement, precise in its choice of materials, contextual, honest, and respectful of the fact that the house is an extension to a 1970’s modernist building.”
Far left: Upon entrance, the birch plywood steps that lead up to the kitchen and then on to the living and dining areas Left: Point to departure: At the outset the architects had a number of standard kitchens in mind, which they thought complimented the overall design. In the end, they decided to move away from the standard, which gave them the freedom to fit the designs and discover new possibilities through a creative design process Below: Living quarters, which are stepped upwards from the family theatre at entrance level to the kitchen, living and dining areas at various levels above

The initial challenge was to design an extension that worked around the way the family lived, while respecting the architectural expression of the original building facade. The new arrangement opens a sense of discovery through the three levels of the house. Now, the private quarters are located on the first floor, while the living uarters are stepped upwards from the family theatre at entrance level to the kitchen, living and dining areas at various levels above. An external courtyard was tucked in next to the kitchen. This serves not only as an external herb garden, but it also allows
for enjoyment of the south facing daylight as it floods the courtyard throughout the day. Internally, the light is balanced with a series of north-facing windows including a high-level window at roof level separating the roof terrace from the kitchen below. The kitchen was the point of departure At the outset, we had a number of standard kitchens, which we thought complimented the overall design. In the end, however, we decided to move away from the standard. This gave us freedom to fit the designs and discover new possibilities through a creative design process.

HW SPACES “In each of our design solutions we worked around a very simple notion – each space was to feel comfortable and right to us. In many ways this home is a physical expression of our way of being.”
The architects picked up materials used throughout the house, including the birch plywood and concrete, while adding a few more, inclusive of leather, which they ended up using as handles for three of the kitchen draws. This customisation and precision in detail ran through a number of other items including the workbench that overlooks the kitchen from the living room, as well as the dining bench and the library unit. The integration of these pieces is an important aspect of the overall design of the house.” The dialogue between the materials and internal spaces is evident throughout the house. As the roof angles itself upwards, the textures of concrete, steel, glass and birch plywood are married in a series of precise architectural gestures. “In each of our design solutions we worked around a very simple notion each space was to feel comfortable and right to us. In many ways this home is a physical expression of our way of being.” 028

his property originally consisted of a single highceilinged and arched room that served as a stable and store for the horse of the previous owner. At just 36 square metres internally, the space was uninhabitable. The conversion of the building through the addition of an extra floor and the creation of a basement has increased the area to a total of 135 square metres. Architect Piotr Armatys: “The house is designed around us and our specific habits. The design maximises the available floor area by creating flexible and often convertible spaces. The provision of storage is a guiding principle of the design and at times becomes part and parcel of the structure of the building.” Upon entrance from street level, a landing allows access down a few steps into the living kitchen area or up a floating wooden staircase onto the mezzanine. The seamless kitchen top wraps around into the living space creating a convenient dining area served by a number of stools that tuck away below the kitchen top when not in use. A concealed hatch beneath the cantilevered staircase reveals another wooden staircase that leads one into the basement. When the hatch is closed the area is a cosy reading nook for the children with a small library and magnetic whiteboard. The space below the landing is used for storage and can be easily accessed by lifting the removable bottom of one of the planters. At the centre of the below-ground space is a 2.5 x 4.5 metre wim pa indoor pool. The pool is heated all year round, making it not only a fantastic alternative for the kids to have fun in when it’s raining outside, but also a great exercise pool for the adults when the included set of three powerful counter current jets are activated.” The pool is covered when not in use, using a set of insulating safety mats that help to conserve energy and reduce humidity. Adjoining the pool is a dedicated shower, as well as an additional small bathroom. Excavations for the basement revealed an old unused bell-shaped well that has been converted into a fun and functional space that evolves according to the needs of the owners: a couple of beanies and a slide make the space into a play area; a removable dining table and a set of stackable chairs transform it into a formal dining area. The small bathroom adjoining the well make it also possible to use the space as a guest bedroom through the use of an inflatable double bed. Natural light, as well as ventilation is provided through the original ‘horza’ of the well.

“The pool is heated all year round making it not only a fantastic alternative for the kids to have fun in when it’s raining outside, but also a great exercise pool for the adults…”
An open-thread wooden staircase leads one up to the children s bedroom at the first floor. This staircase was designed to be compact, yet comfortable, while also being lightweight, in order to allow as much natural light to reach the mezzanine level as possible from the large windows above. The stairwell itself is also utilised to its maximum: the change in wall thickness between the old part of the house and the new construction above creates deep setbacks in the stairwell walls that are used for additional storage. Where the setback is deepest, a wardrobe is concealed behind a white curtain. Floating shelves along one of the walls of the stairwell create a vertical indoor garden.

A number of removable panels within the floor make it possible to access all parts of this vast store. The room has been designed with light in mind, and openings are provided on both sides through the creation of a tiny backyard at this level. The yard provides light to the stairwell, the bedroom and the ensuite bathroom, and will also accommodate an alternating thread compact staircase that will provide easy access to the roof deck. CONTRASTS SPATIAL DESIGNER ROBERT FARRUGIA BRINGS US A CONTRAST OF MATERIALS AND TEXTURES IN THIS NEWLY FINISHED APARTMENT Architecture: Robert Farrugia, DStudio Photography: Tonio Lombardi Words: Andrea Christians
rom the start, Architect Robert Farrugia knew that his client, a young career woman, liked contrasts; rough against smooth, the rawness of unfinished surfaces, textures against luxury items.
F
The challenge was to create something original within those guidelines, and the result is strongly reminiscent of the urban loft look, characterised by the juxtaposition of strong materials, clean lines, zoned areas and the optimum use of space. At the time of embarking on the project, the upper floor of the apartment block was still under construction – a fact that Robert used to his advantage. It allowed for services of the lights and conduits to be concealed above the ceiling, which is a striking feature in this apartment, with a long gypsum profile extending along the length of the corridor into the open plan living room to meet with a concrete bulkhead at the front. Here, Robert made use of its distinctive lower profile to create a feature leaving it in an unfinished state to create aesthetic interest. Conversely, a large American walnut bulkhead runs parallel and stretches the length of the dining and kitchen area,

and was designed to mirror the exact width of the furniture below. “We deliberately tapered it where it meets the concrete bulkhead to create the optical effect of lightening up what may otherwise be an overbearing design.” The same concept has been utilised in the corridor where wood effect flooring follows the line of the ceiling above and cuts into the polished cement floors of the open plan living area. The contrast of floor and ceiling continues under the cement bulkhead where traditional handmade Maltese tiles in grey demonstrate how old and new ideas can be used together to complement one another in the right context. The kitchen reflects the urban industrial look with sprayed black cabinets and a Carrara marble work surface. Splash backs are set against functional stainless steel appliances. The white glass topped central island was custom-made and continues the tapered theme, inclusive of an integrated hob and an overhead extractor. Up-lit kitchen cabinets and LED lights above the wooden bulkhead draw attention to the raw minimalism of the ceiling form.

The sitting area has a distinctly softer feel with the hardness of the concrete flooring offset by a rug to offer warmth and softness underfoot. The large sofa is again an unobtrusive shade with punches of colour added by means of soft furnishings – in this case, scatter cushions. Of particular note is the large gypsum bulkhead on the opposite wall covered in floral wallpaper. “Here we deferred from our original idea of just using an accent colour and went for the wallpaper to add distinction to the wall.” The American walnut theme is continued along with the spray paint finish of the integrated desk and TV unit that was again, custommade, and adds to the sense of cohesiveness.

As is typical of this design style, the window treatments are kept simple with nothing more than black-out curtains to complete the look. In the corridor, a gentle palette of white walls and grey doors lead to the other areas of the apartment with colour again added by means of vibrant artworks that adorn the walls. In the master bedroom, things are again kept simple with a low set bed and walnut bedside surfaces integrated into the bed design. The ensuite bathroom is one that is defined by contrasts of texture. The polished cement flooring was cut at the corners so as not to crack when laid, and is sealed by simple black silicon. With the fore knowledge that his client didn’t like grouting, Robert opted not to use tiles, but rather have a micro topping worked into the plaster on the walls to create a distinctive look. The travertine bath has an accompanying ledge of the same material that extends into the bedroom, whilst the glass sliding door aperture is oversized to make the bathroom feel like an extension to the bedroom when opened. The inset window then reinforces this concept. There is no doubt that Robert Farrugia’s brief “to create something different” has been a success. With the clever use of a simple colour palette, interesting texture combinations, and various forms that all work harmoniously together, he has created a comfortable yet modern home that typifies the cosmopolitan life of today. 042

ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS HW
Best Residential Interior Architecture Best Residential Use of Light Winner: TreeHouse by Galea & Galea Architects Synopsis: “TreeHouse represents the timeless expression of Maltese contemporary residential values. By challenging the traditional concept of the dwelling and reinterpreting the role of local techniques and materials, the design concept explores sustainable adaptive reuse in a dynamic context. The fluidity of space is expressed horizontally in the open plan layout and vertically via the stairwells that flow through and fold in on the various levels, creating a vibrant backdrop to the lifestyle of the residents. Set on an urban peripheral site of 450 metre-squared, the house is designed on three levels of 150 metre-squared. Home to a young family, TreeHouse is a playful reference to a treehouse located some distance from the site. Surrounded by trees, the house is a celebration of light and fluid space: A glass mosaic ‘light wall’ acts as a living canvas for the projection of pixelated shadows cast by the trees in a dynamic combination of patterns designed by nature.
Raw concrete, exposed metalwork, stone, tadelakt, timbers and textured mosaics add a tactile quality and human scale to the interior, while reflective glass surfaces mirror the surrounding landscapes and provide visual contrast. Environmental considerations, sustainability and contextuality play an important role in the design. Large glazed north-facing openings filter the desired amount of light, while maximising views. A strategically placed body of water, whose thermal mass aids in cooling the house in summer, allows air currents above the water to circulate through the interior volumes, eliminating the need for air-conditioning systems. The dynamics of the plan layout also takes advantage of heat generation zones within the house and natural ventilation patterns around its external walls, by reversing the ‘standard’ layout and locating the entrance level above and the bedrooms below. This results in cool sleeping spaces in summer and warmer open plan areas in cooler weather.” 045

ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS HW
Best Residential Use of Materials Winner: Helena’s Villa by Grech&VinciArchitecture&Design Synopsis: “This was a site that was bounded by other dwellings and which necessitated a villa concept designed with privacy in mind. Angular, modernist geometry interprets the sense of protection given by a castle; monumental from the outside, but opening up into private internal courtyards and light-filled living spaces once within. The villa combines a series of materials and volumes; polished concrete floors throughout, generously sized bathrooms, and double height ceilings, interspersed with more playful, contemporary inclusions such as OSB panelling, exposed concrete finishes and perforated steel structures. The main living area features an exposed concrete ceiling that stretches to double height to allow light to flood through the space via skylight windows strategically placed for privacy. A recessed OSB-clad wall provides focus, texture and houses a fireplace, and beyond lays a custom open kitchen, an area demarcated under a lower ceiling level to encourage a warmer feel to this more intimate social space.
The master bedroom is located on the ground floor, affording the client a view of the pool area and internal courtyard. A concrete boundary wall retains complete privacy and reflects the texture of concrete used for the bedroom ceiling and its corresponding ensuite bathroom. In here, mirrored cabinets meet floor level apertures running the room’s length to add light, yet screen it from the pool deck. On the first floor above the living area, a walkway with a perforated steel railing links two further bedrooms creating a change in textures whilst continuing the strong lines of the central volume – a motif reflected in a staircase of the same material elsewhere in the house. Here too, OSB panels partially cover white walls and each bedroom is a mirror of the other, with minimal, contemporary en suite bathrooms and private courtyards available to each.”
Best Residential Spatial Design Winner: Six by Six by Piotr Armatys Synopsis: “The property originally consisted of a single high ceilinged and arched room that served as a stable and store for the horse of the previous owner. At just 36 square metres internally the space was uninhabitable. The conversion of the building through the addition of an extra floor and the creation of a basement has increased the area to a total of 135 square metres. Extensive excavations within the existing building fabric created the opportunity to lower the ground floor below the street level and thus insert a steel mezzanine level within the double volume of the millroom. A deep basement was also created in order to accommodate the depth of the indoor swimming pool. The house is designed around the owners and their specific habits and maximises the available floor area by creating flexible and often convertible spaces. The provision of storage is a guiding principle of the design, and at times becomes part and parcel of the structure of the building.” (See full feature on page 030) 047

Most Innovative Build Winner: Il-Gallarija Miftuha by Chris Briffa Architects Images: David Pisani, Chris Briffa Design team: Chris Briffa, Lawrence Briffa, Sandro Valentino, Stephen Azzopardi
Synopsis: 08
The Maltese gallarija (or closed wooden balcony) is one of the vernacular architectural features, which is slowly disappearing from the Maltese architectural landscape in the name of ‘progress’. In past building booms, the longevity of the gallarija was perpetuated in metal and aluminium typologies respect of its singular proportions and tactility, but also its chromatic effect within its indigenous landscape. With soaring market prices of seafront properties, and indeed of any old property enjoying a grand view, it will become progressively arduous for future owners to pay the price of this traditional ‘feature’. So we asked ourselves: How can we make the balcony ‘disappear’ from the inside, but not from the outside? How can it be modified to accommodate the client’s desire of unobstructed views, whilst simultaneously retaining its traditional features? This challenge has been the driving force behind this two-year project by Chris Briffa Architects. Together with traditional craftsmen, we studied, designed and built a prototype that retains all the aesthetic and traditional qualities of the gallarija, but adds to it a new and much-needed function.
After copious meetings, sketches and drawings we built a detailed 1:10 timber model, which helped everyone understand its complex hinges system. From this, we discovered ways by which to improve its structural stability and ease of opening and closing. The structure looks identical to the traditional balcony in its ‘closed’ position; with the operable glass purtell on top and the fixed timber pannew at the bottom. When the central lock is released from the interior, the four large glass apertures hinge out and pack on the side. The same thing happens with the lower timber panels, which unveil the hidden safety glass railing. The metal locks and hinges have been manufactured by a local blacksmith, and the closing system is based on the spanjuletta method (espagnolette), which secures the large folding parts in place. The remainder is all traditional red-deal construction, built by a local mastrudaxxa (joiner). The first prototype of the gallarija miftuha was installed in 2013 in Valletta, and we arenow studying systems for odd numbered and multiple-panelled balconies.”
Best Restoration Winner: Dar Kenn Ghal Sahhtek, Old Sisters’ Quarters, Mtarfa by JB Architects & Civil Engineers Synopsis: “At the onset of the project, the main advantage of the rehabilitation was that the new use of the building was going to be similar to that of the original one. On being briefed by the clients, our main aim was to provide a home for the patients, eliminating the feeling of a clinic or hospital. Great attention was given to detail from the very initial stages of construction right through to the finishing stages. The framework of professionals behind the project played an important part in the delivery. JBarchitects were the project architects responsible for preparing plans, obtaining planning permission, preparing tendering documents and construction details and supervising construction and finishing works. The multipurpose hall interiors were designed by Pippa Toledo whilst James Dimech was responsible for the interiors of the main building. Ing. Johann Aloisio was the project engineer, Perit Norbert Gatt the restoration consultant, and MC Deguara was the contractor.
A number of alterations and additions were carried out on the existing building, again to create a space that would appeal to its users as a home rather than a hospital or clinic. This philosophy was reflected in both the planning and finishing of the project, which also included the landscaping of the surrounding gardens where it was decided to provide a space where the residents of ‘Dar Kenn Ghall-Sahtekk’ could escape to away from the main building. For this reason we decided that the chapel should be completely detached from the main building and was designed as one with the landscaping. Great care was given to adopt a holistic approach to the design of the chapel, which therefore evolved into the design of the interiors. Although the chapel is small we wanted to further enhance the sense of escape from everyday life within the interiors. This concept was achieved by using the play of natural light and different materials to create a sense of peace and wellbeing. 049

Most Innovative Commercial Build Winner: Technology Hall by Grech&VinciArchitecture&Design Synopsis: “This technology hall combines futuristic luxury with the design of an interactive experience for clients and visitors. The remodelling project saw the complete removal of the existing layout. The hall is accessed with a fingerprint recognition device, and upon entry, the client or visitor is transported into a seamless monochrome environment. At the click of a switch, an illuminated glass panel reveals itself to be a door and visiting parties begin to progress through a series of chambers. Undulating matte white walls that act as partitions hover with the tiniest shadow gap over smooth black resin flooring. Overhead, a double layer soffit in matte black allows cool air from AC units to flow down into the rooms while keeping the ceiling entirely unblemished, save for integrated lighting from Flos. The visitor is guided through the space, passing through a succession of portals, highlighted by strips of LED lighting that signal different stages of the experience. 050
The first room is large, containing simulators and larger products, and the next features custom furniture modules with white curves displaying the firm’s smaller products at an accessible level. This invites clients to handle and test their designs, while information is relayed through a bank of large flat screens. Technicians can access and program multimedia presentations by entering the dividing partitions, thereby keeping the outward appearance entirely free of cables. A small stretch of corridor follows, allowing guests to reflect and walk before a doorway edged in LED lights, which announces a presentation space. Here a custom steel bench with integrated power outlets for laptops or tablets is placed and continues to reflect the overall ultra modern design theme, accompanied by white Tokyo Pop stools for seating. A large flat screen, and a custom steel lectern, created in the same sinuous vein stand in front. The hall also includes a luxurious reception room where clients can relax and enjoy refreshments at the end of a tour or presentation.”

FLOORING HW
HOMEWORKS BRINGS YOU DIFFERENT FLOORING MATERIALS TO CONSIDER, WHILE EXPLORING THEIR MAINTENANCE, DURABILITY, LONGEVITY, AND RESISTANCE
HARDWOOD Due to hardwood’s durability and warm, natural feel, it continues to be one of the most coveted home flooring choices. Hardwood floors are available in a multitude of styles, such as plank, parquet and prefinished boards that can be selfinstalled. Hardwood can be refinished several times (solid hardwoods can be refinished an unlimited number of times), or re-stained to change their look. Oak wood remains the most popular choice for this type of flooring, but there is a vast variety of good woods that are definitely worth considering. Unfinished flooring offers almost unlimited colour stain options, but the drawback is that it needs to be sanded and finished after installation, which typically requires the expertise of a professional and puts the room out of service for several days. Prefinished flooring has a factory-applied finish that eliminates sawdust and finish vapours, which means the room can be used within 24 hours after installation, which is a big advantage when trying to install and continue life as usual. However, the drawback is that the colour options for prefinished flooring are not as varied as they are for unfinished flooring.
LAMINATE A laminate floor can appear like any material, including wood and stone. It’s less expensive than the real raw materials and easier to install, while maintenance is minimal. This type of flooring features a decorative image printed on one or more thin sheets of paper or other fibrous material. For durability, the decorative
layer is infused with a plastic or resin, and then attached to a hard core. To solve the problem of laminate sounding hollow when walked upon, consider underlayments to help deaden the sound.
SOLID OR ENGINEERED WOOD FLOORING Solid or engineered flooring is made up of two or more layers of wood. The top layer consists of a hardwood veneer, while the lower layers are usually softwood. Most solid flooring is unfinished, while most engineered flooring is prefinished. This type of flooring is slightly more expensive than laminate because the top layer is real wood, rather than a photographic imprint. This top layer of wood offers engineered floors a much more convincing sound, feel and look than laminate.
TILES Clay-base ceramic tiles are appropriate for durable, low-maintenance flooring in heavy-traffic areas such as bathrooms, hallways, and kitchens. Ceramic tiles are available in a wide variety of colours, patterns, shapes, and sizes. Porcelain is one of the most popular tiling choices, with it being the most cost-effective. This material combines the aesthetics and hardness of stone, but costs considerably less and is much easier to maintain than some porous stones, which need to be periodically resealed. A glazed porcelain tile is durable enough to handle heavy traffic areas and is available in a wide range of hues, textures and finishes.
Natural stone flooring includes marble, granite, travertine and slate, amongst many others. Not all stones are suitable for use as a flooring material. Some contain imperfections that compromise their performance. In most cases, the more fragile it is, the more expensive the stone tile is. As a result, the finish on stone tiles should be matched to anticipate the wear of that area. Limit highly polished tiles to areas where soft footwear is worn, such as in the master bathroom. In most other areas, a mattelook honed finish is preferred. It’s worth noting that some stone tiles can warp from sun or water exposure and need to be installed with an epoxy adhesive and grout. Also, when it comes to stone, the colour and appearance of a single stone tile won’t represent the entire batch required to surface a floor – regardless of whether the tiles were cut off the same block of stone. The thickness of a tile is one way to measure its strength, as well as the composition, and the temperature and duration of firing.
CONCRETE Popular with designers and architects, concrete is one of the more sought after floors in contemporary homes today. With the wide range of sealers and specialty stains available on the market, plain and gray concrete can be stamped and stained to resemble a variety of finishes. In terms of durability, concrete is probably the hardest wearing, while it’s also extremely low maintenance. It’s also suitable for radiant heat, which is helpful in Malta’s hot climate.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN Fusing African with Mediterranean LANDSCAPE DESIGNER MELINA SCODANIBBIO TEAMS UP WITH INTERIOR ARCHITECT ELIZA COSTABEL TO CREATE AN AFRICAN-MEDITERRANEAN FUSION OF A GARDEN, OPTING FOR AN INFORMAL AND UNRESTRAINED STYLISH MONOCHROMATIC SCHEME Words: Landscape Designer Melina Scodanibbio Visuals: Interior Architect Eliza Costabel
W
hen Eliza and Alberto Costabel recently relocated from Kenya to Malta, they were keen to recreate the mood of their lifestyle, yet fuse it with a Mediterranean twist. Eliza (an Interior Architect and my new design partner) and I set about planning the look of their newly-bought house of character, enhancing the local characteristics. The interiors are planned to be predominantly white – always an elegant combination with stone – and the all-white theme is carried through to the outdoor space; a 55m² paved area with a small pool. For a Mediterranean garden, the concept is unusual. Typically characterised by a riot of colours, instead 076
we opted for a stylish monochromatic scheme, which is in no way formal or restrained. The plants spilling over the rubble planters and clambering up the walls create a relaxed feel and a lush effect.
THE PLAN The main aim is to maximise the greenery – which is virtually non-existent at present and visually blur the confines of the boundary walls, thus giving the impression of a larger space. A stepped limestone planter is designed to run along the back wall and incorporates the structural buttress, which cannot be removed. This new landscaped area
creates a green backdrop and detracts the attention from the overlooking houses. Another planter juts out to the left of the sun deck and breaks up the space with the vertical element of the feature Aloe. To the right of the outdoor shower, the existing low planter is extended all along the wall. A raised custom-built teak sun deck / day bed slightly overhangs the pool, both for lack of space and to create a boutique lounge feel. In the corner a built-in stone bench and wooden table are shaded by simple timber beams and palm fronds, casting lovely shadows on the ground and enhancing the relaxed Mediterranean look.

before
THE MATERIALS Eliza and Alberto were keen to integrate some materials that they brought from Kenya purposely for their yard. Along the boundary wall, sisal stalks – typically used in Africa to build the structures of traditional thatched roofs – are placed vertically to extend the height and provide a natural privacy screen. The existing floor tile is replaced by a x coral tile, which perfectly blends with the colour of the coping and further helps in making the space look larger. Weather-resistant Tanzanian teak is used for the platform of the lounge bed, whereas local limestone rubble clads
the retaining planter wall adding an instant rustic altese flair to the scheme. Oversized terracotta urns are used both as decorative elements and to plant fragrant climbers. The teak dining table in a contemporary rustic style is paired with all-white director chairs. Candlelit Moroccan lanterns and strategically placed landscape lighting create a suggestive night-time atmosphere, accentuating the sculptural effect of this small but high-impact green oasis.
THE PLANT PALETTE
is of primary importance. The three key feature plants, Dracaena draco, Euphorbia candelabra and Aloe barberae, punctuate the garden and draw the eye, while lavish under and background planting in different tones of green, grey, and silver complement the white flowering plants. ragrance is an important element too: aside from the obvious scents of Jasminum and Stephanotis, the resinous aroma of Cistus and spicy, sweet scent of creeping rosemary are reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis.
The main effect is of consistently attractive evergreen foliage and shape
All chosen plants are low maintenance and require very little water.

CITRUS MARINATED PRAWNS Ingredients 250g 1 1 3 1 1 1 100ml 10ml
fresh prawns carrot small cucumber asparagus orange grapefruit lemon extra virgin olive oil white wine vinegar fresh mint fresh coriander
Method Peel the prawns, clean, and place in a bowl in the refrigerator. Prepare the marinade by zesting the orange and the lemon, then put aside. Then peel and take the segments out of each fruit. Squeeze the juices into a bowl. Add on chopped coriander, salt and white pepper. With a whisk, add the vinegar and extra virgin olive oil slowly. Taste for seasoning. Cook the zest in sugar syrup on low heat for five minutes and leave until it has cooled down. Cut the asparagus in half and grill or pan-fry and leave crispy. Peel the carrot and cucumber from top to bottom of the vegetable, and roll on hand to place on plate. Neatly place the carrots and cucumber on a plate, adding on the segments and herbs. Add the prawns and marinade with the olive oil and juices mix, season to taste and place on plate. Garnish the prawns with the zest and some herbs.
BILL’S WINE RECOMMENDATION: 2013 GRAN CAVALIER SAUVIGNON BLANC D.O.K. MALTA “A clean, refreshing, delicate dish that deserves an equally fine, crisp, delicate dry white wine – and this triple award winning Sauvignon Blanc is easily up to the task. Sauvignon Blanc is also a classic accompaniment to grilled asparagus, the herbaceous flavours of the wine and the food blending perfectly together. Drink well chilled.” 081

ROASTED RABBIT LOIN Ingredients 400g 100g
boneless rabbit saddle pancetta, thin
For the filling: 5g 10g 50ml 10ml 50g 20g
garlic onions, chopped red wine marsala dried fruits brown sugar
For the vegetables: 50g of each pumpkin, carrots, leeks courgettes, potatoes, fennel 50ml extra virgin olive oil 5g thyme 5g rosemary
Method Take the pancetta and place on cling film on a tray. Place the opened rabbit on it and then put it in the refrigerator. Prepare the filling by sweating the onion and garlic in olive oil, add the white wine, Marsala and brown sugar. Reduce by a third and add on the fruits. Cook on a low heat until all the liquid has evaporated, then cool down. Take the rabbit from the refrigerator and stuff with the fruit mixture. Gently roll in the pancetta in the cling film. Then roll in thin foil and rest in the refrigerator for at least ten minutes. In the meantime, prepare the vegetables, clean and get ready to cook. In a moderate oven, cook the rabbit loin for approximately 35 minutes. Then take out and rest. Remove from the foil and roll into a hot pan with some rosemary and thyme. Remove and cut just before serving. Serve with grilled or oven-roasted vegetables and some fried herbs.
BILL’S WINE RECOMMENDATION: 2013 MEDINA SANGIOVESE I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS “This lean, mild-flavoured meat goes well with either full-flavoured whites or red wines, but avoid reds with excessive tannins and weight, as they are likely to overpower the dish completely. The Medina Sangiovese is an easy drinking, silky smooth red with spicy elements that will complement the meat and marry perfectly with the sweetish dried fruit filling.” 083

Ingredients for the berry compote 500g mixed frozen berries 200g sugar 1 cinnamon stick
Method for the berry compote For the berry compote, add all the ingredients together and cook on slow heat for 30 minutes. To assemble, first put the compote in the bottom of the glass, then add the pannacotta mix. Leave in the refrigerator until it sets, then garnish with fresh berries.
BILL’S WINE RECOMMENDATIONS: GELLEWZA ROSE FRIZZANTE I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS “The semi-sparkling Gellewza Rose Frizzante will be a great match for this dish when served nice and cold. Red berries and Gellewza are always such a good combination, while the fizz and fruit in this delicious medium sweet sparkling wine will cut through the creaminess of this dessert, refreshing the palate wonderfully.” 085
