LORNA WROTE: ‘My husband and I are renovating a town house, and since it has gone through a major construction we are considering installing a “grey water” supply to make use of the water for flushings. After we saw the The Incentives article in the last issue of HOMEWORKS (which we are very much in favour of), it made us think even further about grey water. It’s not easy to find straight forward information on this idea. It would be of great help if you could publish an article on it.’

01.Tender Poem: Nostalgic and reminiscent
03. Mystic Ode: Passionate and dramatic
It’s impressionism that lies behind the poetic feel of this contemporary and, at the same time, feminine style.
It takes its cue from the literary epoch of the Romantics, combining fairy-tale, fantasy and poetry in a magically decorative style.
02. Inventive Hymn: High-end and skilful The young avant-garde of the design scene focus on traditional materials and craftsmanship from a variety of cultural environments. It gives rise to a refined mix of the traditional and the modern.
04. Weird Diary: Independent and courageous Inspired by the different currents in contemporary art, there emerges a decorative approach that surprises us with its humour and its individuality. 021

TRENDSETTING NATURE
Pinecones and twigs have always worked so well in garlands and wreaths, but this year brings nature in white, copper, silver, gold or even black. Alongside these, toadstools – both large and small – are a favourite. Natural materials are not only bound into festive wreaths, but they decorate vases and tealight holders or are worked into little Christmas trees, stars and hearts of all shapes and sizes. See Stylist Jennifer Jo Barth’s Earthy Christmas on page 061.
STYLISH IN COPPER
Copper continues to be an important colour trend for 2015. A colour that exudes warmth and restrained elegance, it can be found in candles, ribbons, wreaths, vases and baubles. But it’s not only on its own that the colour brings life to seasonal decorations; it can also be used in combination with gold, silver, black, red, as well as light and dark blue, to create an atmospheric mood. When it is sensitively accented with dusky pink there emerges delicate, almost feminine compositions. See Stylist Justine Bartolo’s Copper Christmas on page 059.
Deer from Alistair
PASTEL: PLEASING AND MELLIFLUOUS Delicate ‘girly’ pink is also in vogue this season, along with mint, turquoise and blue. Pastel coloured baubles can create youthfully joyous garlands or lend a freshness to a table decoration scheme. Trees with pastel decorations bring in a light-hearted and contemporary approach to Christmas.

n the sloping bank of Eveux-sur-Arbresle, somewhere near Lyon, an architect sat in one of the long, narrow cells at the Convent of La Tourette. There in the midst of nature, at a desk space designed to make one focus, Matthew Mercieca sat down and set out to design a villa. Although MJMDA, known to be a multi-disciplinary architectural firm, usually designs with the intent to bring buildings to their final user ready state, in this case the process would be a little different. The interior decoration would be done by Rachel Balzan Demajo of SAKS, whom together with her husband, wanted to be highly involved in the overall design of their family home. Inspired by the buildings that were visited on an architectural pilgrimage to pay homage to one of the masters, Le Corbusier, Matthew set out to design a mass of elemental sophistication with seeds of modernism that could so well be applied with his design philosophy and a contemporary context. Approaching the house from a narrow country road, the villa’s stark exterior stands out against the sky. Its bold intersecting volumes, made up of two horizontal masses, is, of course, painted white, as “by law, all buildings should be white”. Made up of clean, simple lines, the architecture provides a perfect blank canvas for the creative, eclectic decorative touches. The bottom ribbon of the façade is pierced with peepthrough windows, their shapes and position reminiscent of the modernist Notre Dam du Haute, one of Le Corbusier’s works in Ronchamp. These give a cheeky glimpse of the colourful interior. The laser cut steel work shutters, a customised SAKS touch, give a sense of privacy to the family.

The master bedroom is an elegant ensemble of silver and mauve set against textured buttoned upholstery custom benches, carried through to the bed’s headboard to create a boutique dressing room within the large open space. This look complements the master en suite perfectly, where the style chosen was reminiscent of a French styled vintage bathroom
The upper volume, the framework of which floats over the front garden and the lower ribbon, has the telltale proportions of a mass triggered by a Villa Savoy. Going up to the porch, the lower volume becomes even cleaner – only the soft blue front door pierces the volume, a colour chosen to ensure an inviting open space, that would set the tone for the rest of the house. Opposite, a concrete skylight provides light for the basement, and creates visual curiosity for guests as they wait outside. 029

Beyond the porch lies the exterior entertainment area; the barbeque area and outdoor dining are carpeted by turf for a more playful feel with a link to the kitchen via an opening for when the hosts are caught up in the kitchen.
Going down the staircase the interiors concept for the basement level was based around fun and playful detailing, as is evident in the custom studded double leaf door that leads to the games room, as well as the tactile pieces in both the playroom and the study
The back façade mirrors the villa’s frontage, yet here the bottom mass is open, taking advantage of the views. An infinity pool at the edge of the back terrace makes the site feel neverending. The introduction of white sheers and cushioning in the custom pagoda, perched over the pool, is also complemented by the use of original outdoor furniture including a classic round dining table, and a 70’s oversized peacock chair. The set up, cleverly put together, works well for both day and night entertaining. Stepping into the home you can’t help but feel the quirkiness that Rachel wished to incorporate from the onset. Behind the glazed façade lies an open plan kitchen and dining area – a large space brought together by a pair of white glass chandeliers that set the tone for the Provençal pieces and style of the room. Unique, functional yet artistic pieces lead from the kitchen, home to a fabulous retro oven stove, to the dining room with its embellished mirrored piece. Through a large picture window across the house’s vertical circulation the lounge is clearly visible. Cross in front of the staircase through the hallway and into the lounge. Home to a uniquely restored antique piano the room is a cluster of original pieces brought together in a calming as well as seductive environment. Set against the home’s entrance, a custom-made room divider creates a welcoming entrance hall. The partition is designed to include the same custom steel pattern that mirrors the shutters. Set against a reflective yet subtle wallpaper, this contours the open plan 031

space that lies beyond. A double seated lounge, with custom cabinetry and upholstery set the tone for the purple and silver colour scheme that brightens up the space. Although eclectic by nature, they are set against classic touches of wood panels, baroque shapes and embellished wall trimmings and coverings; together these lend themselves well to both a relaxing and entertaining environment. Going down the staircase the interiors concept for the basement level was based around fun and playful detailing, as is evident in the custom studded double leaf door that leads to the games room, as well as the tactile pieces in both the playroom and the study. Strong use of bold colour blend well with the original Cuban style parquet within the space, leading off to a delightful little emerald green and gold bathroom, complete with its own set of artistic and creative inputs. The bedrooms are located at the top of the house, where the interior decoration intent was more subdued and sophisticated. The master bedroom is an elegant ensemble of silver and mauve set against textured buttoned upholstery custom benches, carried through to the bed’s headboard to create a boutique dressing room within the large open space. This look complements the master en suite perfectly, where the style chosen was reminiscent of a French styled vintage bathroom. The upper level houses two additional en suite bedrooms, each completed with a sense of quirkiness and playfulness to them, again combining classic use of colour with unique pieces, suited to a bedroom environment.
The back façade mirrors the villa’s frontage, yet here the bottom mass is open, taking advantage of the views. An infinity pool at the edge of the back terrace makes the site feel never-ending. ith this now uniquely finished Portomaso apartment, Interior Designer Penny Apap Brown was faced with the challenge that designers immediately encounter when designing a property that is to become a rental. She didn’t know who the inhabitants would be; a single man, woman, a couple, or a family.
W
Penny immediately opted for a universal design theme, slanting towards a somewhat masculine look. The designer had just returned from Japan, which brought her different inspiration. She began her motivation for the theme of the entire apartment by framing striking Japanese prints, which were a great way to create a focal point on the wall at a low cost. She began working around these. As a huge amount of sunlight pours into the duplex through the high and large window, too much lighting was a problem. The solution was to install blinds with tiny perforations that would allow some light in, but could still be seen out of. The window was then framed with fine-weaved neutral curtains in a texture which causes them to look beige in natural light, but then change to a slightly golden shimmer in the evenings from the pendant lamp’s gold glow. Gold appears often throughout the apartment, alongside browns and reds with nuances of classic elements. As the wall alongside the staircase was originally in burgundy, it became the key colour throughout the rest of the apartment. To keep it interesting, a mixture of design was introduced through retro pieces, such as the coffee table and lamp tables with their glass black tops on timber. Penny opted for a smallish sofa in brown leather, which is hardwearing for a rental space, and also neutral. “When I’m choosing main furniture for a property that’s going to be rented, I always think about wear and tear first, neutrality second.” 035

The challenge of the bedroom area was the open railings that looked down into the living room. This area needed to include a television, but couldn’t look unsightly when looking up from below. The interior designer found two very inexpensive metal stools with metal backs and timber seats. She placed glass across it, added potted plants on the seats, and placed the television on the top so that from the ground floor all that can be seen are the backs of the stools and the plants
The large and focal television panel in the living area was customised in a deep burgundy ostrich leather, which breaks up the space, as well as adds interest. “Some designers put up big images on large walls such as these, but in this case I had to be careful, as I didn’t know who would be living here. Some people don’t find images restful. This was safe, yet it still makes a statement.” The height of the space allowed for a long pendant lamp. The vintage bulb was sourced from Japan and gives off a moody golden light. At night, the gold from the curtains and this gold from above creates a stunning effect.”

"PEOPLE DON'T WANT CLUTTER IN THEIR KITCHENS, BUT SOMETIMES THIS CAN CAUSE THEM TO BECOME VERY MINIMALIST AND BORING. I LIKE CREATIVE, ORGANISED CLUTTER."
I
A breakfast bar was installed to break up the small kitchen from the living area and also to serve as the sole dining area. A steel hanging chain was covered in a red fabric to hang a variety of kitchen necessities: tea towels, pots, and in this case, unique Japanese utensils. It’s a great idea for space saving and becomes a quirky addition to the space. “People don’t want clutter in their kitchens, but sometimes this can cause them to become very minimalist and boring. I like creative, organised clutter.” There was a somewhat limited budget for the upstairs area. “I deal with budgets by finding a balance between things that cost (such as the lights over the breakfast bar) and things that I find at a bargain (such as the charcoal grey fabric bed). It’s about finding things. For instance, I saw the bed at a showroom that was surrounded by unattractive accessories. I then found two mismatched lamps in other parts of the showroom. I moved things around to see what it would look like together and suddenly the bed took on a whole new character.”
The bedroom is now in a grey and biscuit colour scheme with calming and neutral wallpaper. The challenge of this area was the open railings that looked down into the living room. This area needed to include a television, but couldn’t look unsightly when looking up from below. Penny found two very inexpensive black metal stools with metal backs and timber seats. She placed glass across it, added potted plants on the seats, and placed the television on the top so that from the ground floor all that can be seen are the backs of the stools and the plants. As a result, the television goes unnoticed. “I like using stools for different functions because if really needed, extra seating is then readily available.” The result of Penny’s product potential hunting and seasoned design solutions is an apartment full of interesting focal points, functional furniture, and spatial appeal - with just a hint of quirky character.

nterior Designer Sandy Bonnici didn’t know the homeowners of this stunning St Julian’s apartment when she was commissioned, but now they have become good friends. Sandy: “This was a wonderful project to work on. Apart from extremely receptive and helpful clients, the layout just came together very easily because it was such a great space to work with.” Initially upon entrance there was a window, which failed to offer any light, and as a result was closed off and replaced by an ornate silver mirror. An inviting entrance was then created, using some of the homeowners’ antique pieces and a striking flower arrangement, which offers an immediate inviting feel to the home. Originally the kitchen was closed off entirely, and was entered via a door on the right hand side of the entrance and another door next to the dining area. It was an obvious decision to knock down these walls to create an open plan, bringing in an airy and open feel throughout the apartment. “The client wasn’t one hundred percent keen on having an open plan kitchen initially, but had full faith in the outcome. What’s great is that by opening it up, the openness and sea view can now be enjoyed from the kitchen where the homeowners spend a lot of time.’’ The kitchen was further “smartened up” by the elevated marble L-shaped breakfast bar, which was designed to slightly cover
the hob, as well as any messy surface that could possibly be seen whilst living in the space. This defined the kitchen space substantially, and created an elegant feel to the space as it’s approached. Comfortable stools were also very important, which were made and upholstered to suit the colour scheme. It was paramount for the homeowners to be able to sit down and see the amazing sea view from wherever they opted to perch. As a result, Sandy positioned the living area around the view. The antique dining table was one of the few old pieces that the homeowners had, and was placed according to where it fit best. The double frontage allowed for a lovely dining and living space - both enjoying the sea view. One of Sandy’s signature design details is to subtly split up the bedroom quarters from the living area, as it’s convenient for heating and cooling purposes, as well as for privacy. In this case, the homeowners also wanted to use the bedroom hallway as a second television and play area for their daughter. The use of a reflective tinted glass door was the perfect solution, doubling as a feature in itself. “What’s great about these doors is that from the entrance and living area you can see a reflection, and from the bedroom area you can see right through them, so light still filters through to the back area.” A wall-to-wall library, inclusive of a bar unit, was created to face the kitchen, initially planned for a seating area in front of it. However, as the project developed, the open space proved extremely welcoming, which led to the notion of keeping

it open as much as possible. Here was the perfect space to place a focal-piece patterned carpet, alongside lovely reupholstered antique pieces in the same colour scheme. The fitted unit was created to display ornaments and frames, as well as to accommodate a bar area, which was requested by the homeowner. Here Sandy sectioned off a part for storage and created an adequate surface to make drinks on, while the grey panelled finish offers a French classical touch to the space. The mirror-clad back of certain cubicles gives a sense of depth, as well as enhances the reflection of the crystal decanters and glasses. The rest of the cubicles were backed with a simple upholstery fabric. The apartment offers a balance of old and new throughout. The more modern units are in a lacquer finish and a touch of dark stained high gloss wood. The homeowners’ antiques were dressed up, while any boxy looking furniture was softened with curves and panels. Most of the furniture was custom-made, while matching table and wall lamps give a sense of harmony to the whole design. This, in addition to the indirect soffit lighting, offers a softer light for when the homeowner needs it, while the rest of the lighting is simple and timeless. With regards to zoning such a large space so successfully, Sandy used the structural pillars as guidelines. The kitchen was created to fit in between two of these pillars and the breakfast bar’s depth is the same width as the pillar. To define the kitchen, the ceiling was slightly lowered.

One of Interior Designer Sandy Bonnici’s signature design details: to subtly split up the bedroom quarters from the living area, as it’s convenient for heating and cooling purposes, as well as for privacy. In this case, the homeowners also wanted to use the bedroom hallway as a second television and play area for their daughter. The use of a reflective tinted glass door was the perfect solution, doubling as a feature in itself
The elegant and subtle colour scheme creates an envelopment of calm throughout the apartment. Sandy: “This progressed as we went along - it usually does. We actually chose the upholstery fabric for the antiques first and then worked around them for the sofa, curtains, etcetera. We went for greys, mauves and very neutral colours. With regards to colours I always like to go for a very neutral base and then accessorise with colour. Once you have a neutral palette to work with you can change it around and have so many different looks without having to change too much. I find the colours that we went for very soothing and calming. With nothing too pronounced, most things will just blend easily. I tend to leave the very colourful parts for an odd chair, cushions or a piece of art. Scatter cushions are always a last addition. Sometimes the space might need a kick of colour and a cushion is a perfect way to do this.
When it doesn’t need it, I also love to use simple colours that blend well, or a neutral colour, but with a nice pattern.” The grey panelling throughout was inspired by Sandy’s recent trip to Paris. “All the hotels and cafeterias are all so beautifully finished with panelling; it just gives such a fine elegant touch.” The enormous terrace is the ideal spot for a barbecue and dining area, which is used frequently by the homeowners to dine, enjoy the view, and entertain. This striking St Julian’s apartment is the real deal, where the homeowners live in fully-functioning classical contemporary elegance.

hese homeowners were looking for a cosy house of character that would allow them to enjoy both indoor and outdoor space. In 2011 they purchased this Zebbug property, which probably dates back to over 500 years ago during the Norman era. The evidence is in certain features that the house possesses, such as the uneven arches, corbels and ‘xorok tal-qasba’.
T
The couple found the property already converted and in relatively good condition, although felt that its character and potential weren’t fully developed. “After seeing various places of each kind, we began to develop a better idea of what we wanted. As soon as we entered this house, we felt a certain peacefulness and comfort. We also pictured how the house would look completely designed for our lifestyle. The house had a lot of features that we were looking for: the terraces, its rural and laid-back location, its open views from the roof, and the internal yard surrounding all the rooms of the house. We wanted to maximise the house’s potential by making use of all areas, and to uncover its hidden beauty.”

The couple embarked on creating a balance of the outdoor and indoor spaces, as well as mixing a rustic and cottage style to provide a sense of cosiness, yet still comfortable and convenient living - in fitting with today’s lifestyle. “We wanted to have unique details, such as utilising the wooden shutters of an old house to create wardrobe doors for the bedroom instead. We also built a waterfall in the pool area by selecting the hard stones and placing them ourselves with the help of the workmen.” The majority of the other work was also done by the couple themselves, spending their free time working together. They bought antique stones to decorate the house. They changed the pool area, kitchen, roof terraces and bathrooms to create a more comfortable style. They landscaped the terraces and back yard, as well as passed new water and electricity around the house. “Doing this ourselves, together, has helped us forge a stronger relationship, and also to have a sense of pride in the work that we’ve done.” The most difficult part of the project for the couple was to manage time between their full-time jobs, as well as balancing their finances to meet deadlines. 050

Now, the homeowners utilise each part of house. In the summer months they make the most of the pool area and roof terraces. In winter, they use the indoor space and internal yard. At Christmas time, the couple decorates the house from the beginning of November. They enjoy a cosy Christmas; carols, mulled wine, Christmas movies and the spectacularly decorated Christmas tree.
“There are always ways to improve the house or help make the house feel more comfortable. But we would like to do this one step at a time. After four years of working on this house we are looking forward to enjoying our hard work for the forthcoming years!

“Ever since last year, pastels have been a favourite trend of mine, so I thought to incorporate the same colour scheme for the festive season. I particularly love the way the three main colours pink, blue and silver work together. It gives off a playful yet still sophisticated finish to the design, which I feel is the perfect mix in any space. Pastels may come across as a little childish at first glance, but this is the fun part of the palette! Tied in with sparkling Christmas decorations this illusion completely dissolves and suddenly you’ve got yourself a young and elegant area.
cupcakes, adding to the whimsical aspect of things. I even sourced twigs from my own garden and added little cotton balls to the tips that are reminiscent of snow. Texture is a huge factor in this design, everything from glass and wood to wool and fabrics. They really make all the difference and add a new dimension to the space. So if you’re looking for a Christmas dining set-up which already looks like fun before the party has even started, look no further - pastels are the way to go!”
For this dining table set-up I was able to have a lot of fun, including candy- like marshmallows and

“Copper is a great colour and material to use at Christmas time with its gorgeous metallic shimmer and its ability to go with so many different colours. I love the sophisticated look it brings with black. Bring copper in this season through under plates and the fantastic choice of decorative items in the shops this year.
Warmth also comes with bringing nature into the equation, and there is nothing more soothing then adding that raw, organic feel to a Christmas set-up. I bring the outside in by using twigs to decorate; this could be the actual table centrepiece or just propped up in a vase on a side table or mantelpiece.”
Black is the perfect accompaniment when using copper, as its coldness contrasts beautifully with the warmth the metallic brings.

“The inspiration behind this setting was from rough to ready, from natural to manufactured. Out of raw lumber you can create calibrated, levelled, linear, manufactured objects, such as the side and coffee tables seen here. The contrast of their clean and processed look against the rough backdrop embodies this feel. With a little imagination you can create something beautiful and reuse what you have without adding more. The look is natural, innocent, warm and pure,

In her journal for Christmas Eve 1832, the delighted 13-year-old princess wrote: ‘After dinner... we then went into the drawing-room near the dining-room... There were two large round tables on which were placed two trees hung with lights and sugar ornaments. All the presents being placed round the trees…”

‘I like the traditional side of Christmas with its rich, warm colours and luxurious motifs. I mix metallics - especially golds, coppers, and Champagne with deep reds. This works really well with the copper pot that I use as the tree planter. I love ornaments brought in from nature with shimmery finishes; leaves, berries and birds. Further to that, large amounts of real Poinsettias are always found around my house at Christmas time. ‘Candles create such a warm atmosphere, and I bring Christmas into other parts of the home with simple bowls filled with striking various-sized baubles. Oriental carpets also accentuate the warmth, and traditional ones are ideal for bringing out the reds of the season.’ 065

Method Slice bread into 1.2cm discs and lightly toast in oven. Once done, put a dash of olive oil on toasted pieces. Assemble as shown. For Hummus and Sweet Potato crisp recipe, see opposite page.
. . GELLEWZA FRIZZANTE LIFESTYLE ROSÉ, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS "Canapés hold a promise of ‘more’: more friends to arrive and food to follow. What’s needed is a crisp apéritif to open the appetite – not a sweet one to sate it! Given the many different flavours, a character-strong wine which also shines on its own is best. The toppings varying in sweet fruity flavours and tartness are to be reckoned with. The off-dry Gellewza Frizzante does just that. It’s packed with red summer fruits; faintly sweet, but also festively fizzy, which adds some extra sharpness to refresh the palate. Serve well chilled in a fluteshaped glass"

CUISINE & WINE HW
MEAT + CHEESE PLATTER For easy and simple entertaining, a meat and cheese platter is the way to go. 150 grams of each cheese and meat is a good measure for display, while the board can be topped up, depending on how many people are sharing. Here, we used Bleu D'Auvergne cheese, Tomme de Savoie cheese, Délice de Bourgogne cheese, and d'Argental Chevre cheese. For meats, we used San Daniele Parma Ham, Bresola, Tuscan Fennel, and French Smoked Ham - all available from Zammeats Delicatessen. Any fruit will do, but the sweetest is best as it offsets the saltiness of the meat and cheese. Anything in-season is a bonus, but grapes, peaches, figs, sliced green apple or pear, strawberries, and melon all work very well with cheese. The more variety, the better the board. Cut everything up so it’s easy for guests to grab. Add olives and pickles for a tangy element. Honey also goes very well with cheese – here we used a hummus dip (see recipe previous page) and we added some homemade sweet potato crisps and regular homemade crisps, but you can easliy buy all these ready. Place crackers, crustini or big loaves of rustic bread and cut a few slices to begin with. Then leave a knife available so that people can cut their own. For a further bread dipper, lay out a small dish of olive oil with fresh rosemary.
2014 GRAND VIN DE HAUTEVILLE VIOGNIER, SUPERIOR, D.O.K. MALTA "The mishmash of sweeter, nuttier meat flavours and the noticeable tang of some of the spicy cold cuts wrestles with the varying degrees of sharpness from the cheeses, making this a trying wine match. I have therefore singled out a safe go-between dry white with apricot, peachy goodness as well as a fair tad of tart, citrusy brightness. It nicely cuts the various fats and proteins while smoothening the craggy grain from the various cheeses. This rather complex Viognier works in a revelatory way and its body and mouthfeel lace all different bites together."

RACLETTE Ingredients Meat: Bresola Tuscan Fennel San Daniele Parma Ham French Smoked Ham
Cheese: Bleu D'Auvergne cheese Tomme de Savoie cheese Délice de Bourgogne cheese d'Argental Chevre cheese
2014 MEDINA GELLEWZA, I.G.T. MALTESE ISLANDS "The most predictable pairing is an Alpine white. But raclette, to me, is a heart-warming dish too wintry to pass up the chance to uncork a red. Without trepidation I suggest this elegant, lightweight garnet native made from Malta’s Gellewza grape. Served cellar cool, this is an ideal soft wine with zing aplenty and will refresh the palate from the cheeses’ taxing buttery texture. Perhaps keep off nearby vinegary pickles and salt. But dust the cheese crust with black pepper to emphasise the wine’s cherry fruitiness and lip-smacking treacle finish. Bliss!" 083
