CARLTON The light, elegant and refined Carlton sofa at BoConcept takes us back to the stylish upmarket homes of the 60s and 70s. Designer Anders Nørgaard has added very soft, comfortable cushions to bring a more contemporary, progressive and casual touch to the classic design. The thin seat frame in steel gives the sofa a very light, minimalistic expression. Carlton is modular, so it can be designed in any size, shape, material and colour, as well as in leather and fabric. www.boconcept.com.mt

THE
TRENDS HW
2015
THE TOP CURRENT LIVING ROOM DESIGN TRENDS ARE ALL ABOUT INTRODUCING TOUCHES OF LUXURY, COLOUR AND TEXTURE TO THE LIVING SPACE
011
HW TRENDS BLACK IS QUICKLY BECOMING EN VOGUE ONCE AGAIN IN A BIG, BOLD WAY. IRIDESCENT ACCESSORIES, PARTICULARLY BY WAY OF COPPERS, BRASSES AND BRONZES, ADD GLAMOUR TO THE LOOK, KEEPING IT FROM FEELING TOO MOODY. COMBINED WITH ELEGANT LIGHT FIXTURES, THE OVERALL FEEL IS REMINISCENT OF ART DECO DESIGN OPULENCE. IF GOING BLACK IS TOO MUCH OF A RISK AND YOU HAVE THE SPACE, CONSIDER DOING UP ONE PART OF THE LIVING AREA IN BLACK, USING IT AS A ZONING METHOD.
Grasscloth wallpaper made a slight appearance some years back, but is making its presence known again this year. Not only does it work as a subtle wall solution, but it also helps create a natural, earthy look, which is coveted at the moment.
Marsala may be Pantone’s 2015 Colour of the Year, but bold blue is having its moment (see more on page 33). There’s nothing sad or immature about this shade; it’s simply royal. This year sees interior designers using it everywhere - on walls, on bookcases, in tiles, and all over accessories. 012
TRENDS HW The new buzzword this year is greige - not quite grey, but not quite beige. This greyish brown is the most versatile neutral in play right now. The shade offers warmth, while allowing crisp accessories and accents to pop - all without a single bold colour. Having said that, it also mixes well with accents of blue, orange, green and chocolate brown - perfect for those whose colour tastes change often.
With so much emphasis on craftsmanship in home design these days, it’s no surprise that Asian rugs are receiving the attention they deserve. A lot of the most popular rugs are coming in from Morocco and Turkey - home of some of the most skilled textile makers. The Beni Ourain style Moroccan rug is a popular pick for neutral design palettes because the thick, fluffy pile of the rug adds loads of texture to a space, softening it up and adding visual interest. For those that like the look but appreciate more colour, Boucherouite rugs are often made from recycled materials with the result being a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
A few years ago, Chevron print was everywhere, mainly because it was an easy way to add playful colour and contrasting shapes to various design styles. If you like the idea of Chevron but are ready to try something different, look to honeycomb and other solidly geometric shapes. Any geometric shape is going to add visual texture to a design, so there’s no need to stick to conventional shapes. Not all patterns have to be large and bold - find them in accessories too.
Wood accents are always trendy in one way or another. While the past few years have seen lots of rustic, reclaimed wood with grey, unfinished undertones, the favoured look for wood right now is a warmer natural look finish, showing off lots of grain.

SOFAS LEATHER OR FABRIC? A lot of people buy fabric sofas over leather ones because they’re under the false impression that leather colour options are limited. Not anymore. There are actually too many to count, yet most people don’t order custom leather furniture, but rather buy it ready from the showroom. With fabrics, the colour choices seem endless, and then the decision has to be made: solid or pattern? Matte or shiny? Most people feel that it’s easier and less of a commitment to just buy a leather sofa that’s readily available, and be done with the shopping. The practical reason for opting for a leather sofa is if children or pets are around, as it’s hardwearing, long-lasting, and spills can easily be wiped off. However, leather can feel extremely hot in summer or very 016
cold in winter, so it’s not ideal for living rooms that are not temperature controlled. Fabric has a warm, cosy and inviting look. It’s available in various types and textures, so the choices are ample. Unless the sofa covers are removable to clean, fabric can be high maintenance, as it’s not easy to keep clean (unless it’s a dark colour). Cotton and linen are pretty durable fabrics and can be treated for stain resistance, but watch out for loose weaves, as they can snag. Synthetic microfibre is also hardwearing, which can mimic most fabrics, and is stain resistant. Blends of natural and synthetic fibres tend to pill within a year.
SOLID OR PATTERNED Unless you have the budget to replace your sofa every five years or so, it’s best to stick to a solid colour. Keep in mind that fabrics with patterns woven in tend to wear better than those with printed patterns.

COLOUR Sofa colour options can prove difficult. The right choice depends on a variety of elements, such as the surroundings and the way the living room is used. Yellow beige or sand are popular because they’re neutral and easy to maintain. They look good with blues, purples, fresh greens, black, brown and cream or white. Be careful not to go too bright with the colours however (such as lemon yellows), otherwise the sofa can look dirty. The problem with a mocha coloured sofa is that the only colours that work with it are green-greys or taupe shades (or blue and purple, but backdrops in these colours are rare). Fresh or yellow greens (or anything clean) with mocha will end up just looking dirty, so the decorating options with this sofa colour choice are limited. A green-beige or mushroom coloured sofa looks dirty with fresh colours, but works well with rusty oranges, gold, muted red and
purple. Know that pink-beiges and yellow-beiges don’t work in the same room - a common mistake made, which results in an undesirable outcome, without the homeowner being able to put their finger on what’s “off”. A brown sofa alone is fine, but too much of the colour can be overwhelming. Brown looks best with creams and beiges. The colour is apt if the living room is shared by a lot of people, including children. Black is great if you like sharp contrasts, as it looks so crisp and graphic with white and vibrant colours, such as fuchsia or turquoise. For the more conservative, a golden beige sofa works well with rich tomato reds, burgundy, navy, blues, rust, and grey-greens. This colour doesn’t work so well with very vibrant colours. Charcoal-coloured sofas are more masculine, but certainly a good colour for family living rooms. Stick to brighter colours for accents- reds, mandarin orange, yellow-green, and light purples. 017

Blue is a timeless colour for a sofa, and goes with every colour. Purple can prove tricky, as it goes red and blue very quickly, so it’s safer to carry around the colour swatch with you when matching accessories. Neutral colours die with a purple sofa, so you need green-yellow to keep it sophisticated and happy.
MEASURING Before buying a sofa, the first thing you should do is take measurements. You can start by taking down the measurements of the room where the new sofa(s) and chair(s) will go. If you are thinking of buying a combination of pieces similar to the sofas you currently have, take down their measurements too. 018
Next, measure any door frames that the new sofas will have to pass through. Measure both the height and width of them, as this is where a lot of problems with access might occur. If you have very narrow doorways, or if you live in an apartment with restricted access, you may want to consider recliners, as they often break down into more manageable pieces, which are later assembled in the room. If you’re not interested in reclining furniture and are still worried about access, it’s worth asking the showroom whether or not the sofa you’re interested in has removable arms, or if it has a split option.

COFFEE TABLES SIZE As with all furniture, finding the right coffee table size depends upon the size of the living room and the setup of its furniture. Consider the height of the sofa cushions and choose a table that’s approximately the same height or slightly shorter. A coffee table should measure no more than two-thirds of the sofa’s total length. 60 centimetres of clearance should be kept around each side. Don’t ignore personal designing impulses based on specific lifestyles, such as planning to spend more time standing than sitting around the coffee table, or creating a down-to-earth

feel with lower settings. If you like sitting on the floor, you’ll want to consider a lower table, which offers a laid-back mood to the living room. Consider three small, identical coffee tables instead of a single large one. Not only can they be dispersed as individual tables, but they can look good arranged alongside one another. Coffee table sets create an instantly unified look for the whole living room, while nesting coffee tables save a great deal of space when needed.

SHAPE
LEGS & SUPPORT
The standard, traditional coffee table shape is rectangular, and furniture designers create endless variations of this shape, in which the table surface is just one component. It’s hard to go wrong with a rectangular coffee table, but again, consider how you’ll be using it. If you frequently entertain guests, you may want to consider a circular or oval coffee table. Round furniture pieces tend to be better at gathering groups of people, and they are easier to manoeuvre around safely. Square coffee tables are good for unifying facing seating areas that otherwise might look too far apart. They also present an excellent focal contrast in living rooms dominated by rectangles. Beware of placing a square table in a room that’s already too small, but if you’re trying to bring balance to a larger room, this might be the right shape for it. Multiple surface heights mean multiplied utility, which makes tiered coffee tables popular.
Beyond the coffee table’s surface, think about what’s underfoot, especially in terms of concentration, comfort and convenience. If planning to spend stretches of time seated near the coffee table, consider a support system that will get along with the preferred placement of feet. For those that have children, pets, foot traffic or a stubbing toe tendency, consider a table with leg support that’s slightly recessed. If the coffee table is likely to hold heavy items or will be used for eating, it’s best to find a piece with burly leg support. On the other hand, a lightweight coffee table is much better for those that like to move furniture when cleaning or entertaining.

LIVING ROOM LIGHTING HW
AMBIENT
Stylish chandeliers, ceiling lights, wall-mounted fixtures or portable lamps can provide the ambiance that casts a warm glow in the living room. It controls glare and provides the general illumination that makes the living room feel comfortable and inviting. Lighting designers aim to create an effect when creating ambient light, and many will use this type of lighting when they want to illuminate a surface, but conceal where the light source comes from. Since this type of lighting affects the overall quality of light in the room and tends to be used the most, this is where energy-efficient solutions, with dimmers or three-way controls are most essential.

HW LIVING ROOM LIGHTING ACCENT
When looking to highlight certain focal features in the living room such as textured walls, a painting, or a fireplace, accent lighting is the right kind of light. Accent lighting adds a pleasing variation of brightness which draws attention and places more light on architectural features. To achieve successful accent lighting, it needs to supply about five times as much light on the focal point as the surrounding general light. Accent lighting at residential project by Light Design Solutions
Using task lights all the time will leave the living room looking flat and bland; they should only be used when carrying out a task, such as reading or writing. Here, Sonate black metal floor lamp by Nordlux, available from Smart Creations
TASK
For reading a book or writing at a desk, good task lighting helps you get things done. This brighter light can be a floor lamp with a swinging arm next to a comfortable chair, or a directed light source over a desk. However, using these lights all the time will leave the living room looking flat and bland; they should only be used when carrying out a task. With a more localised type of lighting, positioning is especially important.

DECORATIVE
Decorative lighting is great for creating interest and adding sparkle to the living room, through types like table lamps, hanging pendants and chandeliers. This lighting personalises the space and provides the cosiness and intimacy that a living room needs.

WALL ART HW

HW WALL ART
HEIGHT Many have a tendency to hang art too high. The centre of the image should be at eye level. People are usually sitting in living rooms, so artwork should be lower. A good way to ensure you’re placing artwork at the right height is to hang it one hand width above the sofa. BALANCE A common problem when hanging artwork above a sofa or sideboard is that it’s not to scale. Having pieces that are too small or too large will make the whole arrangement look strange. Make sure the artwork or cluster/group is at least twothirds the size of the sofa or sideboard. COMPOSITION FOR MULTIPLES Big, unruly, tight clusters of framed and unframed artworks can create a whole new singular piece out of multiple small ones. It can look modern and vintage at the same time; organic, eccentric and unafraid. 028
When hanging multiple pieces in a group, visual balance is very important. In a group arrangement, keep heavy pieces to the bottom and left, which will balance the weight of the items because the eye starts on the left. For an even arrangement, place the heaviest piece in the middle. SAME FRAME A symmetrical arrangement creates a striking and simple focal point. All-white or all-black or three-colour frames unify this grouping. Using the same frames or small-scale colour schemes will create homogeny. GALLERY ARRANGEMENTS Gallery arrangements are easy solutions for blank walls. Give the display interest by including more than just framed art, such as vases or plates. Start by defining the dimensions of the display. Position the most prominent piece at eye level in the centre and work outward. If using different frames, spread them out to give a little breathing room between each piece.
WALL ART HW
BHS HOME FP
ON THE LEVEL Hanging multiple pieces around a room can be difficult, especially when walls, doorways, or windows separate the pieces. When hanging multiple pieces around the room, don’t try to make the bottoms or tops of frames level, but rather level the middles. KEEP IN KEEPING Make sure the arrangement matches the decorating style. Symmetrical arrangements are more traditional or formal, while asymmetrical is more modern. The image and style of the frame makes a difference; vintage for rustic, large and abstract for contemporary.
ARTWORK CLUSTER HOW-TO For hanging groups of artworks, we came across a unique trick using inexpensive grid-printed wrapping paper. Arrange the various sized frames on the wrapping paper using the grid to keep the space between the frames consistent. Trace the arrangement onto the gridded paper. Set the frames aside, and then with the outline of every frame on the paper, it’s easy to move the paper to the perfect place on the wall. When ready, temporarily attach the paper to the wall with drafting tape. Using the paper as a guide, portrait nails (or the frame-hanging hardware of choice) can be placed quickly and efficiently.
029
HW FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT
THE BASICS OF FURNITURE ARRANGING AN EMPTY ROOM CAN EITHER BE AN OPPORTUNITY OR A CHALLENGE. WITH SO MANY WAYS TO FILL IT, HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE TO START? HOMEWORKS OFFERS SOME RULES OF THUMB FOR FURNITURE ARRANGING IN THE LIVING ROOM CIRCULATION
PRIORITY
CONTRAST Combing straight and curved lines for contrast helps. If the furniture is contemporary and linear, a round piece will work with it for contrast. If the furniture is curvy, mix in an angular piece. Further, pair solids with voids: for instance, combine a leggy chair with a solid side table, and a solid chair with a leggy table.
SYMMETRY Symmetrical arrangements work best for formal rooms. Asymmetrical arrangements make a room feel more casual.
Place tables within easy reach of every seat, being sure to combine pieces of similar scale, and make sure every reading chair has an accompanying lamp.
FUNCTION Think about how you use your living room specifically and how many people will use it. This will help direct you on the type of furnishings you’ll need and the amount of seating required.
TRAFFIC FLOW Think about the flow of traffic through the room - particularly the path between doorways. Don’t block that path with any large pieces of furniture if you can avoid it. Allow 75 centimetres to one metre of width for major traffic routes and a minimum of 60 centimetres of width for minor ones. Try to direct traffic around a seating group, not through the middle of it. If traffic cuts through the middle of the room, consider creating two small seating areas instead of one large one.
PLANNING
VARIETY
FOCAL POINT
The focal point is specific to each living room. It can be the view, the fireplace, the television, etc. Once this is established, the furniture can be orientated around it.
Before moving any actual furniture, test the design on paper. Measure the room’s dimensions, noting the location of windows, doors, heating / AC points and electrical outlets, then draw up a floor plan using cutouts to represent the furnishings if you don’t have a digital room planner.
030
Place the sofa in first, facing the focal point. If the priority is entertainment, place sofas and chairs facing each other. Chairs should be no more than two and a half metres apart to facilitate conversation. Unless your room is especially small, avoid pushing sofas against the walls.
Vary the size of furniture pieces throughout the room, so the eyes move up and down as the space is scanned. Balance large or tall items by placing other pieces of similar height across the room from each other. Art can also be used to balance the composition. Avoid putting two tall pieces next to each other.
FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT HW MEASUREMENTS THERE IS A SAYING THAT GOES, “MEASURE TWICE, DECORATE ONCE.” THE RIGHT PLACEMENT OF LIVING ROOM FURNITURE DEPENDS HEAVILY ON CLEVER MEASURING. KEEPING THE BELOW MEASUREMENT GUIDELINES IN MIND WHEN PLANNING A LAYOUT WILL ENSURE A WELLPROPORTIONED LIVING SPACE THAT’S EASY TO WALK AND LIVE IN. AREA RUG
Area rug distance from the wall: 15 centimetres. Ideal: 60 centimetres from the wall in large rooms, and between 30-45 centimetres in a small space.
ARTWORK
Artwork height on wall: Centre of piece standing eye level, approximately 1.4 metres from the floor. Artwork height on wall if people are seated most of the time: At a seated eye level (which is 75 centimetres above the seat height). Between the edge of the piece and the ceiling, floor or wall edge: 15-30 centimetres of space.
COFFEE TABLES
Distance between the coffee table and sofa: Approximately 35-45 centimetres. Height of a coffee table: Close to the seat height of the sofa (within 10 centimetres in either direction). Coffee table to sofa size ratio: Approximately half to two-thirds the size of the sofa visually, or “a little more than half the size”.
SEATING Distance between seating: No more than three metres and no less than 90 centimetres between people seated around the room to optimise intimate conversation and everyone’s personal space. People sharing sofas and love seats are the exception, but the people seated on each end should be at least 90 centimetres from the next closest chair. SIDE TABLES Distance from side tables to chairs: Close enough to place down a drink. Try sitting in each seat and imagine trying to place your coffee or magazine down. Height of a side table: No taller than the height of the arm of the chair(s) they’re serving, and no lower than the height of the seat. The ideal height is around eight centimetres shorter than the arm. For chairs without arms, aim for a table top that’s no more than 20 centimetres above the seat height. Height and size of sofa tables (the console table that sits behind the sofa): No taller than the height the sofa back. HW 2015 DINING ROOM
5 DINING ROOM TRENDS TO TRY
FIVE MUST-TRY TRENDS TO MAKE YOUR DINING ROOM AREA THE ‘CHIC’EST IN THE HOUSE
1 BENCHES Communal seating has made a big splash this year. A space-saving option, benches are a convenient and interesting alternative to individual chairs, making the dining experience more intimate without compromising seating capacity.
2 ADD GLAM For those who like the glamorous touch, mirrored furniture adds drama to any dining room. Although primarily found on the table, mirrored buffets or sideboards are also in at the moment. Antiqued mirror works especially well because the worn, speckled finish disguises potential stains and wear. 038

3 ADD A QUIRKY PENDANT LAMP
4 GO RUSTIC
Opulent crystal chandeliers are no longer the sole mark of a chic dining room. Instead, a statement can be made with a one-of-a-kind piece. Super popular this year are fixtures made from unexpected things. Unique lighting allows for a great conversation-starter focal piece.
Rustic doesn’t have to mean roughing it. Materials such as rough-hewn wood and tin can add a relaxed feel to an otherwise contemporary classic dining room, creating an inviting and warm space that encourages gatherings.
5 SUPER SIZE ACCESSORIES The recent trend for largerthan-life accessories adds a playful punch to the dining room. It’s ideal for larger than usual spaces, and whether it’s something hung, painted, leaning, or freestanding, oversize decor makes a bold and stylish statement. 039
HW DINING TABLES
So You Want A Dining Table... THE CENTREPIECE OF THE DINING ROOM, IT’S ESSENTIAL TO FIND THE RIGHT DINING TABLE THAT BRINGS THAT PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN FORM AND FUNCTION. HOMEWORKS BRINGS YOU SOME TIPS AND SOME STRIKING DINING TABLES AVAILABLE THIS YEAR
The new Milano dining table is a perfect example of Scandinavian design, with easily extendable tops, different colour combinations, and available in two sizes. Find it at BoConcept

DINING TABLES HW
ARGOS dining tables available in round and oval shape in a variety of combinations. Find them at SATARIANOHOME

SHAPES
Rectangular and round tables are traditional choices that make sense because they fit most dining room spaces. Round tables promote easy-flow conversations, and rectangular tables accommodate a lot of guests, especially when extended by a leaf or two. Square tables are a good option for a more unique, modern look. For versatility, consider a rectangle table that transforms into a square. There are so many new interesting designs these days that opting for an innovative shape could perk up a lacklustre dining room. For instance, an oval or octagonal table will introduce curves to a boxy room.
STYLES
Rich wood finishes and carved legs are classic features for traditional styles. Rustic or vintage styles favour distressed, worn, or exposed woods with chunky construction. Trestle tables are a farmhouse favourite – pair it with a couple of benches instead of traditional chairs for a casual approach. For this style, also look for pieces with painted finishes and tabletops on a pedestal base. For wooden tables, choose a cherry stain for a classic traditional style, while oak or maple stains are better for a rustic look. Dark (black or brown espresso) stains will match modern design. Beware that darker stains tend to show dust and scratch more quickly than natural tones. For a modern design, look for dining tables made from metals, such as stainless steel, or with chrome finishes. A glass tabletop is a contemporary staple.
Saturno is a smart and stylish table, with a scratch-proof and etched tempered glass top which makes the surface attractive and practical. European ash structure with painted steel support. The table is spongedyed by hand. By Natuzzi, available from FORM
Model Point by Lube, available in 120cm x 90cm extendable to 180cm and 160cm x 90cm, extendable to 220cm. The extension includes a glass matching the top for all options. Structure colours are available in black and white, while glass tops are available in both matte and gloss finish and in various colours. Find it at Carmelodelia
For a casual look, dining tables can be painted to match the decor. Gloss or semi-gloss paint hides the wood colour and grain, as well as gives the table a cleanable surface. To resist scratches, finish it with a clear sealer. Paint also allows for a certain look, such as a crackle or a colour-wash finish for a rustic look; bold, graphic stripes for a whimsical effect; or a paintdipped treatment for a contemporary feel.
SIZE
First measure the room and the doorway to know what the room can hold. The best dining table serves guests but doesn’t overstuff the room. Fill a large room with a table that grounds the space. Make the most of a small room with a smaller table with extra leaves that can double its capacity. To allow chairs and people to move around the room comfortably, find a table that leaves about a metre between it and the walls.
FUNCTION
The days of using the dining table solely for eating are over. Think about how it will be used specifically. If there are few people in the household, or quiet conversation fits the inhabitants’ dining habits, choose a round table that allows everyone to see each other and converse easily. Square or round tables offer ultimate flexibility – intimate when closed, yet accommodating when expanded into a rectangle or oval.
SPACE SAVING
For small spaces, consider options, such as a compact loft or eat-in kitchen, with clever design. A table with self-storing leaves that pop up and lock into place offers all the benefits of an expandable table without the hassle of clunky, removable leaves. 041
HW DINING TABLES Look for tables with dual purposes for versatility around the house. A cocktail table that raises to dining table height serves both the living and dining rooms. A drop-leaf table can serve as a family room console table or breakfast room buffet, but then also expand for dining guests.
MATERIALS
When a piece is being sold as a solid wood table, then it shouldn’t include other materials, such as plywood or particleboard. Solid wood is durable and long-lasting because most scratches and stains can be repaired. On the other hand, solid wood tables are more expensive, and the wood can split over time. The alternative to solid wood is veneer, which is a thin layer of wood glued to a base, such as plywood or medium-density fibreboard. High-quality veneer tables have a solid core with solid wood legs. Veneer is more affordable than solid wood, and it warps and splits less. However, peeling edges and blistered surfaces can occur, particularly on inexpensive, massmarket pieces.
FINISHES
When considering table finishes, consider specific needs and how that might wear at a table. Glossy sheens and dark stains or paints show worn areas quicker, while light woods and distressed finishes conceals them. Watertight coatings will avoid water rings, while glass tops should be avoided in hightraffic areas or homes with a lot of children.
SHOPPING
White solid mahogany wood dining table and chairs, available in various colours. The size of table can be customised and made extendable, and is available in different finishes. Find it at Granny Smith
When visiting showrooms for a new dining table, sit down at them to gage for comfort and stability. Look for elements like ample elbowroom (about 75cm between chair centres and across the table), and ensuring that it isn’t too big for passing dishes comfortably. Lean on the table from all angles to check for stability. Consider how the chairs interact with a table, especially if buying them separately. Make sure the chairs, including arms, fit under the table and that the arms don’t bump the table. When sitting down, cross legs; there should be space between the table apron and thighs. Also, check under the table to be sure the table legs don’t interfere with the chairs. Ask about delivery options when buying. Unless buying a small or assemble-it-yourself table, it may be worth the fee to have the showroom deliver and set it up.

HW OPEN PLAN LIVING / DINING
IN THE
WHILE OPEN PLAN LIVING/DINING AREAS ARE NOW COVETED, PITFALLS OF EXPANSIVE LAYOUTS CAN INCLUDE LACK OF PRIVACY, AN EMPTY AND OVERWHELMING FEEL, AND CAN LACK CLEARLY DEFINED SPACES TO BE USED FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES, RESULTING IN A LARGE AREA THAT LOOKS AND FEELS CHAOTIC. HOMEWORKS EXPLORES SOLUTIONS FOR DIVIDING A ROOM WITHOUT IMPLEMENTING STRUCTURAL CHANGES, EITHER VISUALLY OR PHYSICALLY, TO CREATE SMALLER, MORE INTIMATE AND FUNCTIONAL ZONES
LIGHTING
Lighting is a big one. It’s an extremely clever and effective way of dividing zones. All kinds of lighting can achieve this, particularly statement-making pendants that can simultaneously set the style tone of the space. 048
OPEN PLAN LIVING / DINING HW
ARTISTIC DIVIDERS
CONTRASTING MATERIALS
Opt for a divider that doubles as art to successfully separate two areas without closing them off completely. It can provide a stylish, eye-catching separation that also offers character.
Clever juxtaposition of materials is a lovely way to subtly divide spaces. The great thing about using all-natural materials is that it’s extremely difficult to get it wrong.
ARTFUL ARRANGEMENTS
FIREPLACES
The placement of furniture can make a huge difference when it comes to creating separate zones in a spacious, open area.
Both practical and striking, a fireplace can beautifully separate a room, keeping both spaces equally as warm.
FLOORING
Flooring in different materials, colours or patterns is almost as effective as lighting when it comes to creating a visual division between the two areas. Introducing a stepped or sunken level into an open-plan design will help define the different zones, while ensuring the room maintains its open airy feel. The step that marks the transition doesn’t have to be high - the contrast in height, even if subtle, will provide visual cues to a room division. 049

CROCKERY
Choose the kind of crockery that best suits the type of food you enjoy. Simple foods look and taste best on simple crockery. White plates will make any food look good, as it won’t conflict with its colour. Going for a pattern that’s easy to match is the best way to go. This way, you can add mix-and-match pieces as the family grows or as dishes are broken and need to be replaced. Soup bowls offer a lot of versatility. Besides holding soup, they can be used as salad bowls, liquid condiment holders, small serving dishes, and crisp bowls, amongst other uses.
GLASSWARE
Large glass mugs and wine glasses are the best bet for informal dining. Anything can be served in them, from water to wine, soft drinks to juice, with a gracious and generous feeling. 051
HW TABLE SETTINGS
TABLE COVERING
The table covering can be anything that inspires the palate. This is the area where creativity and drama can be maximised because the backdrop is what is going to really set the mood. Think lacy tablecloths for a romantic vibe, strong white for a classic feel, patterned for a more eclectic, themed dining experience, and consider tablemats for a more casual feel. 052
COLOUR
Napkins, tablemats, and flowers are a great way to bring a pop of colour to the table. Napkin rings can also add interest and drama. Fresh flowers are always nice to have on the table. Remember to keep them reasonable in size. If they’re too bushy, it’s hard to see and talk to each other through them. (See ‘Flower Power’ on page 054 for some great table flower ideas.)
TABLE SETTINGS HW
DESSERT & COFFEE
Bring in a different style and weight to the rest of the crockery and glassware through the dessert dishes and coffee china. Soup bowls can be used as dessert dishes, but lighter, more delicate plates always seem to make a dessert taste better. 053
Flower HW TABLE SETTINGS
POWER
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF FLOWERS FOR A STRONG TABLE SETTING
PRETTY IN PINK It does tend to strike a somewhat feminine vibe, but with a plain light backdrop, pink can bring calm to a table setting. 054
TABLE SETTINGS HW
SKIP THE FLORIST The “flower feel” can be brought in through alternative ways, such as homemade paper flowers or floral crockery. Mix it in with casual flowers for an inexpensive, yet totally fresh feel.
CORK IT If wine drinkers, there’s always the conundrum of what to do with all those corks, each one with a memory linked to it. For temporary or faux bouquets, fill the vase with them.
WONDERFUL WHITE It’s hard to beat white roses, particularly against a bold backdrop, such as this navy blue. To break down the formal look into a more eclectic one, place the roses in different container sizes and styles.
BELLE BALLS White flower balls immediately bring the table a classic sophisticated look. They’re ideal for more formal occasions, but for a more casual feel, use coloured flowers instead.
SEASONAL FLAVOURS AND COLOURS Fresh fruit add a lot of colour and charm to the table. Try pairing up with seasonal flowers or wild flowers. Poppies and strawberries both grow in the same season, making for a surprising and colourful display. 055
