Dante e Virgilio nell’inferno multicolore di Cesare Moncelli L’inferno può diventare un luogo variopinto con campiture rosso squillante, azzurre, gialle, azzurre, rosa? Sì, diventa uno scenario multicolore dove la drammaticità delle pene a cui sono sottoposti i dannati osservati da Dante e Virgilio viene restituita da scene concitate eppure lineari di un gra co dei nostri giorni che rivisita un predecessore di qualche secolo fa: Federico Zuccari o Zuccaro, come più vi aggrada.

Can hell become a colorful place with bright red, blue, yellow, blue, pink backgrounds? Yes, it becomes a multicolored scenario where the drama of the pains to which the damned observed by Dante and Virgil are subjected is returned by excited yet linear scenes of a modern day graphic designer who revisits a predecessor of a few centuries ago: Federico Zuccari or Zuccaro, as the more you like.

A Firenze il pittore di natali marchigiani, vissuto dal 1539 al 1609, lo si rammenta principalmente per aver completato gli affreschi nella cupola del Brunelleschi dopo la scomparsa di Giorgio Vasari. Meno noto ai piÚ è il corpus dei suoi 88 fogli tratti dalla Divina Commedia custodito dal Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uf zi che il museo diretto da Eike Schmidt ha pensato bene di divulgare al vasto pubblico attraverso una mostra online per questo anno dantesco in cui ricorrono i 700 anni dalla morte del poeta.

In Florence, the painter from the Marche region, who lived from 1539 to 1609, is mainly remembered for having completed the frescoes in Brunelleschi's dome after the death of Giorgio Vasari. Less known to most is the corpus of his 88 sheets taken from the Divine Comedy kept by the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Uf zi that the museum directed by Eike Schmidt has seen t to disclose to the general public through an online exhibition for this Dante year in which 700 years have passed since the poet's death.

A group of these sheets was inspired by an amused and even irreverent reinterpretation Cesare Moncelli, a 66-year-old Tuscan, Florentine graphic designer who practices freelance and teaches graphic design and post design at Zhejiang Shuren University in Hangzhou City, capital of the Chinese province of Zhejiang.

In the Moncelli sequence, the Florentine poet and his guide in Hell and Purgatory take on the form of silhouettes in the midst of chaos, the demons become black and mocking gures, the places of damnation have clear colors, the damned are agitated and crowded on blue and red backgrounds, Charon on his boat stands out against the red background that can recall the pro le of a promontory, instead of claustrophobic those circles are chaotic yet lively, bizarre.

Nella sequenza di Moncelli il poeta orentino e la sua guida nell’Inferno e nel Purgatorio assumono la forma di sagome in mezzo al caos, i demoni diventano gure nere e beffarde, i luoghi della dannazione hanno colori netti, i dannati si agitano e si accalcano su campiture azzurre, rosse, Caronte sulla sua barca si staglia sullo sfondo rosso che può ricordare il pro lo di un promontorio, invece che claustrofobici quei gironi sono caotici eppure vivaci, bizzarri.

Moncelli ha titolato il suo ciclo di illustrazioni digitali “Dante pop historiato da Federico Zuccari” con un gusto per l’antico cui contrappone scenari dove i diavoli sembrano buffe gure un po’ esagitate.

Se il richiamo alla stagione pop è coerente, e lo è, in queste illustrazioni viene da pensare a Tano Festa quando rielaborava nel suo linguaggio il Michelangelo della Cappella Sistina, tanto per dare un paragone. Il rimando tuttavia è un semplice esercizio comparativo, giusto per stuzzicare il gioco della curiosità, perché queste immagini vivono di vita propria con uno spirito in fondo ludico e in grado di rammentarci come il poema conservi tutto il suo potere evocativo e la sua vitalità dopo sette secoli: anzi, proprio rivisitazioni di artisti su altri artisti confermano quanto siano vivi il testo poetico e, a sua volta, il lavoro di un pittore e disegnatore all’opera mezzo millennio fa.

If the reference to the pop season is coherent, and it is, in these illustrations one thinks of Tano Festa when he re-elaborated the Michelangelo of the Sistine Chapel in his own language, just to give a comparison. The reference, however, is a simple comparative exercise, just to tease the game of curiosity, because these images have a life of their own with a spirit that is basically playful and able to remind us how the poem retains all its evocative power and its vitality after seven centuries: indeed, artists' reinterpretations of other artists con rm how alive the poetic text is and, in turn, the work of a painter and draftsman at work half a millennium ago.
