This is my book. My name is:

3

Paige and Paxton love to play outside.

4

Paige and Paxton live in Puzzleland with their mom and dad.

5

In Puzzleland, all the puzzle pieces are different.

6

But each puzzle piece has a perfect fit—something he or she loves to do. It’s what makes Puzzleland perfect.

7

Sometimes a perfect fit is obvious. It’s obvious to Paige and Paxton that Mama Puzzle loves being their mother.

8

But like many puzzle pieces, Mama Puzzle has several things she loves to do. For example, Mama Puzzle loves botany.

9

Botany is science. Science is the way we find out how things work and why things are the way they are... in this world and beyond.

10

Botany is the way we find out how plants work and why plants are the way they are.

11

Botanists study the types of plants and the parts of plants.

12

Botanists study how plants grow and even what makes them grow.

13

Botany is all around us. Trees, shrubs, flowers, herbs and fruits are all plants.

There are plants that grow indoors...

14

There are plants that grow outdoors...

There are plants that grow in very wet places...

And there are plants that grow in very dry places.

15

Mama Puzzle’s favorite plants are flowers. She owns Corner Florist, a blooming flower shop in Puzzleland.

16

On Saturdays, Paige and Paxton often go to the flower shop.

At the flower shop, Paige and Paxton have important things to do.

But sometimes it takes a while to get to the important things.

17

Paige and Paxton make sure that the plants get the three things they need to grow big and strong...

Air

Plants need the special kind of air that we breathe out. Plants use their little mouths to breathe this air in. 18

Paige and Paxton make sure the plants get lots of this air. 19

Water

Plants need water. That’s why plants have roots. Their roots are like tiny straws that suck up water into their stems. 20

Paige and Paxton make sure the plants get lots of water—but not too much. 21

Sunlight

22

Plants need sunlight. They use their leaves to soak up the sunlight.

Paige and Paxton make sure the plants get a lot of sunlight.

23

Paige and Paxton are having fun, but they’re puzzled.

Do plants eat? What do plants eat?

24

Where do they get their food? How do they get their food?

Paige and Paxton are puzzle pieces, but they don’t like being “puzzled.”

25

Paige and Paxton do what they always do when they’re puzzled. They ask questions.

26

“Those are good questions,” says Mama Puzzle. “Plants can’t move around to get their food like we do, so they make their own food right where they are.”

“Botanists and other scientists call this photosynthesis,” says Mama Puzzle.

27

“Photo?” asks Paxton. “Syn-the-sis?” asks Paige. “Photosynthesis,” says Mama Puzzle.

28

“It’s a big word. It’s just how plants use air, water and sunlight to make their own food.”

“Plants that grow outside get these three things on their own,” says Mama Puzzle.

“Plants that grow inside need our help!”

29

Paige and Paxton feel like real botanists. Now they know how plants make food, and they even know how to help plants make food.

30

“Learning about plants can also teach us a lot about who we are and where we live,” says Mama Puzzle.

“The plants are part of our community of living things here in Puzzleland,” says Mama Puzzle.

31

“A community of living things includes the water we drink, the air we breathe, the land we walk on and all the plants, animals and living things that live in one place together.

32

“We need each other to live and survive,” says Mama Puzzle. “You might say that each is just one piece that makes up the puzzle of life.”

Our Mission Change the course of a nation by making STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) easy to teach and easy to learn at the very beginning of a child’s educational experience Our Vision World Domination through STEM Why We Do What We Do For Kids: 80% of adults in STEM fields had at least one parent in the field. This means a huge number of our kids are missing out on opportunities that can be life changing. For Teachers: Classroom teachers face unprecedented challenges to meet expectations and standards. Teachers need time-saving resources that enable them to make small shifts in their classroom lessons to drive STEM interest and create a STEM mindset. For Our Nation: We’re losing the battle. Thirty years ago, 40% of the world’s scientists and engineers came from the U.S. Today, it’s 15%. STEM fields are where the well paying jobs are—and will be—in the global economy.
