Trash-can-decorating contest runs through March 14
The Missouri Department of Transportation invites Missouri students in grades K-12 to help fight litter in Missouri – and to have creative and educational fun – by participating in the 2025 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest. The contest is part of MoDOT’s annual “No MOre Trash!” statewide litter campaign, which is held in April.
The contest encourages school-aged kids to join in the fight against litter by decorating a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter prevention message using a variety of creative materials. Schools, or home school programs, may submit one trash can entry in each competition category: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to the contest rules and effective use of the theme and logo.
First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of $600 and a trophy awarded to the sponsoring school.
There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online with up to three photos and a release form by March 14. Contest rules, entry forms, release forms, logos, past winners and educational information can be found at modot.org/trash-can-contest.

Lane Mitchell from Chillicothe, MO, has been selected as North Central Missouri College's Outstanding Student for December. Lane is pursuing his associate in science degree and plans to graduate this semester. After graduating from NCMC, Lane will transfer to a fouryear institution and work towards a Bachelor of Science in Religion: Biblical and Theological Studies. After completing his bachelor's degree, Lane plans to pursue a master’s in divinity. Lane said, “My overall end goal is to pursue what I would not even consider a job, but instead just an opportunity to serve Christ and others through ministry. It is something I have felt a true calling towards.”
Lane is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at NCMC and stays busy with school, work, family, and life. When asked about his favorite class, Lane said he couldn’t say there was one specific class, and there are
many great classes and great instructors, but if he had to choose, it would be any class taught by Dr. Susan Stull. Lane said, “Dr. Stull is always willing to help and give up her own time to make sure you succeed.”
Lane went on to say, “I chose NCMC for three reasons. First, it is close to my home here in Chillicothe, allowing me to easily commute and not requiring me to move. Second, the cost of NCMC is something that I could not beat at any other institution. Third, it is where my mother went and received her associate degree. NCMC has helped me create a base to build in terms of my education, helping me prepare for what is ahead.”
Each month, a student is nominated by a faculty or staff member to be featured as an Outstanding Student based on their dedication to educational success, attitude toward learning, and hard work in their field and activities.

The quilt was queen size was been framed to hang on a wall. It has been on display at the Grundy County Museum, The Jewett Norris Library, Main Street Trenton Bldg., The Famers Market, Poppy Day Sales at Hy-Vee and the MO Days Celebration.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890. It’s founder, Eugenia Washington, declared that “We want a society founded on service.”
The National goal is to log 15 million Service to America hours by its chapters nationwide each year. One of the key upgrades includes making the building handicap accessible to ensure that all veterans and visitors can navigate the space with ease. The remodel will also feature a dedicated office space for the VFW Veterans Service Officer, Kansas City Veterans Center, and Missouri Veterans Commission. These offices will provide veterans with much-needed privacy to discuss their concerns. In addition to these upgrades, the post plans to install internet and computer stations. This will enable veterans to access the VA, seek employment, and communicate with VA doctors through real-time video conferencing. Active military personnel will also benefit from this installation, as it will allow them to access their military orders and benefits efficiently. Prior to the reception, the chapter conducted its December meeting. Connie Key, Regent called the meeting to order and the meeting opened with the DAR Ritual, Pledges, Preamble and American Creed. Highlights from President General’s Message and National Defender were presented. The Women’s Minute, and American Indian Minute was presented by Jackie Soptic. Missouri families now have a new tool at their fingertips: a comprehensive resource guide designed to support parents and caregivers of children from birth to age 12. This guide, developed in partnership by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) and LifeCourse Nexus Training and Technical Assistance Center (UMKC Institute for Human Development), provides descriptions, links and phone numbers of various statewide resources and is organized by types of supports which are categorized as discovery and navigation, connecting and networking, and goods and services.
“Through many of our partners throughout the state, we are thrilled to provide Missouri families with this easyto-use guide,” said Melanie Highland, director of the Division of Senior and Disability Services with DHSS. “Whether a family is looking
for support for their child’s special health care needs, mental health resources or child care information, this guide connects them to resources that strengthen their support network.”
While the guide is useful for all families, it was targeted to assist Missouri families of children with special health care needs and disabilities, highlighting Missouri Family to Family and the Special Health Care Needs Family Partnership. Both programs provide free statewide services and are staffed by parents or family members of individuals with special health care needs or disabilities.

The NCMC Foundation and Holiday Hoops committee extend their gratitude to everyone who helps make this annual event a success. Once again, area businesses and organizations are stepping up to provide volunteers each day to assist with the front gate, answer questions, and welcome fans. This year’s day sponsors include BTC Bank, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, Farmer’s Electric Cooperative, North Central Missouri College, NCMC
Foundation & Alumni Association, Trenton Rotary Club, and US Bank.
“We are incredibly thankful for the support of our volunteers,” said Nate Gamet, Committee Member and NCMC Athletic Director.
“In addition to day sponsors, we rely on volunteers for tasks such as operating the official clock and scorebook, selling raffle tickets and tshirts, and assisting with hospitality. Their dedication is essential to the success of this event.”
Proceeds from raffle ticket sales will provide a 2024 Holiday Hoops participant with a scholarship to attend NCMC next fall. Donated raffle items include a GoodOne grill, meat bundles, and RTIC coolers, courtesy of Landmark Manufacturing, Smithfield Meats, and Scobee Powerline Construction, LLC. Tickets are available throughout the 45-game event at $1 each, 6 for $5, or an arm’s length for $20. Winners will be announced on December 31st.
Daily admission for the 2024 event will be $5 for everyone over the age of 12, while children 12 and under are admitted free. Commemorative program book featuring participating teams and event sponsors will be available for purchase for $5, and event t-shirts showcasing the refreshed logo and sponsors can be purchased for $10. A nine-day event pass is also available for $30 at the NCMC Foundation office. For more information, call 660-357-6403.
