ith its advantages and multi-function facilities, the HKAC continues to organise interdisciplinary art programmes to redefine and shape the arts field, explore new possibilities, and charge into new frontiers.

F E AT U R E S TO RY

“T

he HKAC naturally took up the role of promoting interdisciplinary art. This crossdisciplinary outlook is the essence of the HKAC,” former Programme Director Oscar Ho observed. The HKAC has the distinct advantage of being home to theatres, exhibition galleries, and auditoriums. Equipped with hardware for any art form and coupled with close inter-departmental collaboration, the HKAC held the large scale interdisciplinary art festival – Festival Now. “Festival Now was held around 1997, with the precise aim to reflect and echo the sentiments in the Hong Kong society amid the handover back to China.” The fruit of this first event, which featured different local performing art artists, was a unique piece blending drama, music, and dance. The second instalment included also visual art, video art, and literature. “Interdisciplinary art helps the audience to examine a theme from multiple vantage points and thereby enhances the content of the work.” HKAC had the privilege of having four directors, each managing a different artistic field. Many new ideas sprouted simply from their regular lunch conversations, realising dreams of interdisciplinary art. “People engaged in artistic creation do not like demarcation. If one has a brilliant idea, he or she would take it to someone from another department, who would then decide whether to go forward with it or not. In general, the way we worked together was very flexible. We were not even focusing on achieving a certain breakthrough in interdisciplinary art, but we got there in our own organic way.” Festival Now successfully covered a wide range of interdisciplinary approaches. Apart from presenting a common theme through various media, the festival integrated different art forms in one event. One example was the exhibition Sentimental Education of the 1997 Festival Now, which featured interdisciplinary artists who created performing and performance arts pieces based on the exhibits. The ingenuity of Festival Now not only earned the event high acclaims, it enlarged the audience’s understanding of interdisciplinary art and opened up a new chapter for the local interdisciplinary art scene.

Multi-media peformance “Incarnate”

T

he Y2K bug was a hot topic around the turn of the millennium. Joining the global discussion on this issue, the HKAC organised Digital Now in 2001, an art show that featured digital art and other art forms, such as dance and video art, by local artists. Pieces included Yip Wai Yin and Cheung Chi Wai’s Incarnate and Yeung Wai Mei and Jamsen Law’s Dance-Video Workshop, Run-Shoot-Run. Despite the event being nearly two decades ago, one of the artists, Bryan Chung, still recalls some of the artworks vividly. “I was the one providing technical support to Incarnate. In the piece, dancers from Australia and Hong Kong danced simultaneously. It was still the age of dialup, and we used that to allow the dancers from the respective places to see each other’s poses and positions, and respond instantly.” The experiment was conceptually new and logistically challenging. Due to the slow internet speed, Bryan had to hire a special line from the telephone company, and multiple trials were required before a smoothrunning performance. “The hardware was tricky. But the experiment really expanded our imagination of what could be done on stage. Digital art is like a catalyst. It records different art forms through videos or audio recordings, digitalises and integrates them, and allows them to interact with one another. I dare to say that digital art will be the trajectory for interdisciplinary productions.” Due to the ease of transmission, digital art has become a prime channel for other art forms to widen their audience base. In addition to Incarnate, Bryan worked with Hung Keung to put Hung’s exhibition, Human Body and Moving Images, on CD-ROMs. The exhibition was an exposition of Hung’s thoughts of the human. Through storing it in CDs, viewers could bring home the entire exhibition, thereby allowing it to transcend time and space and reach new audiences beyond physical constraints. “There had been other digital art festivals in Hong Kong as well, but they usually featured foreign artists. To have one that was mostly produced by locals and local artists, with interactive artwork, Digital Now was an important showcase.” Digital Now was a significant milestone in the development of the local digital art scene. The promotion of interdisciplinary art through digital means will undoubtedly reinforce the influence and impact of traditional art forms.

C

reativity alone is not sufficient for a successful interdisciplinary art production. A strong network with different artists is essential as well. “Our thought process was very simple. We desired to create a platform for artists to explore their ideas to the fullest.” Following this thought, then Programme Director and now Executive Director, Connie Lam Suk Yee, organised I-City Festival in 2005. It was a response to the heated discussion about the “Post-70s” and to the 25th anniversary of the novel, Wo Cheng (My City), by Xixi. I-City encapsulated, through a breadth of art forms, the imaginations for the city of the generation who grew up during the 70s. Since the HKAC was well-endowed with multifunctional facilities, the HKAC attracted many artists of different specialisations and built a close-knit network with them, who ultimately gave rise to the many interdisciplinary activities in I-City. A prime example would be one of the tenants, 7A Drama Group. The HKAC literally and metaphorically provided them a larger stage, by inviting them to create the play, A City With Nostalgia & Hope, based on Wo Cheng. Apart from 7A Drama Group, the attempt to integrate animation and theatre was an opportunity for local animators. A City With Nostalgia & Hope coincided with the 10th anniversary of the ifva. In order to nurture future animators, past winners of the ifva were called to make their contributions to Wo Cheng, and the animations they created were linked together for the animated feature, i-City. This set a precedent for re-interpreting a literary work with animation. “Literature was often adapted into movies, but why not animations as well? By breaking down boundaries between art forms, we hoped to let audiences discover other art fields and interact with one another.” Indeed, the platform provided by the HKAC was instrumental to the growth of many artists. “Creators of Along the River During Qingming (Hong Kong, Partial) in I-City, Lilian and Vivian Fu, were initially Junior Silver Award winners of the 8th ifva. Lilian proceeded to set up her own animation company “Flourman Production.” This was a sweet testimony to how interdisciplinary art gives opportunities to artists of different fields, which in turn fuels their enthusiasm and development in their artistic careers.

F

ollowing the success of past interdisciplinary art festivals, the HKAC launched Arts Xperience, comprising Art@Lunch, Open Dance, and a series of free cultural activities in public spaces. Art@ Lunch, as the name suggests, took place at mid-day. Its programmes ranged from concerts and moviescreenings to ethnic dance shows. “I noticed that Wan Chai was the stomping ground for many ethnic minorities and so I wanted to give a space for them to exploit their potential.” said Connie Lam. Among other events, Connie and the Programme team put Indian traditional dances vis-a-vis Brazilian capoeira, inspiring a physical, cross-cultural conversation. The captivating performance also broke the audience’s habit of only attending art events in the evening. The idea behind Open Dance originated from the observation that, over the years, the growth of the dance audience base had been lagging those of the other art forms. The HKAC therefore joined hands with choreographer Daniel Yeung to bring to the audience a great variety of dance forms, including jazz, Latin, hip-hop and so on. These performances took place in public spaces, and the audience were invited to join in. The blurred boundaries between them and the performers re-ignited public interest in dance. The interaction between the dancers and public artworks was in itself an interdisciplinary performance.

港藝術中心一向著重 cross discipline(跨領域), 但我們還想 cross culture(跨文化)。

“I

nterdisciplinary art has been a core value of the HKAC. However, we wanted to take one step further by crossing cultures as well. We often talk about cultural exchange, and Hong Kong does receive many foreign artists. But are we satisfied with only watching their performances, or should the two sides collaborate?” said Connie. HKAC organised A Taste of Hong Kong and Art Actually, two cross-cultural art exhibitions, in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The former saw ten Hong Kong artists travel to Brussels, and the latter ten artists from Brussels to Hong Kong. Each artist paired up with a counterpart from the other city to create a piece of stage work, with dance as the main medium. The most interesting feature of this project was the pairing of a dancer and an artist from a different art field. For instance, dancer Mui Cheuk Yin’s partner was weaving artist, Elise Péroi; and dancer Nicanor de Elia’s partner was cartoonist, Kong Kee. These combinations sparked many interdisciplinary performances. Under this premise, the non-dance artists had to think extra hard to insert their specialisations into the performances. Nevertheless, that led to many pleasant surprises. For example, film director Jessey Tsang was partnered with Italian dancer, Gaïa Saitta. Tsang had never performed on stage but decided to respond to Saitta on stage through dance. She was not only crossing media and cultures, but also the boundaries of her own comfort zone. In summary, cross-cultural performances are a great way to introduce Hong Kong art to foreign audiences, as well as for Hong Kong artists to receive comments and input on their works from audiences overseas and gain an international outlook. Furthermore, interdisciplinary art forces artists to look beyond their specialty, widen their horizons, and venture into unknown territories. Anecdotally, these two exhibitions deepened the relationships between artists of different fields. The piece created by dancer/choreographer Tracy Wong and Mao Wei and artists from France and Belgium was re-staged at the 29th Macao Arts Festival. As Connie said, “We provided a platform for organic growth. But the chemistry between participants often exceeds our expectations.”

n mid-2017, the HKAC introduced multi-arts into its art incubation programme. Cultural Masseur, which took a year and a half to plan, aimed to encourage public participation in art events through several series of guided tours, workshops, and internships. This summer, Cultural Masseur will launch the Dragonix Multi-Arts Festival, an event that aims to enrich the public’s artistic knowledge and experience.

The 12 activities of Dragonix fall under four main categories, Theatre & Exhibitions, Thematic Walks, Site-Specific Performances, and Chill Chat. PIU3, a Theatre piece, is a collaboration between artist Jaffa Lam, musician Hakgwai, and movement coach Ong Yong Lock. Jaffa explained: “This piece was inspired by housework and the act of washing – bleaching.”. Unconventionally, only 60 tickets will be available for each performance at the Shouson Theatre. With her specialisation in installation art, Jaffa is particularly interested in space and her intent is to carve out a space by reducing the number of participants in each show. This will also be Jaffa’s exciting debut in performing art. Having rehearsed for over half a year, she is ready to showcase her skills in physical theatre as part of the piece. In another theatrical piece, Janice Poon, Alex Cheung and Shaw Mei Kwan, Lecturers at the School of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, will lead a group of drama students to present Unknown: living in progress. Cheung observed that signs denoting “No Entry” often paradoxically aroused his curiosity in what was being kept from sight. Unknown: living in progress, which engages all five senses, is his response to these unhidden spaces. “The five senses are an important tool in performing art as they re-create reality for the audience.” The audience will not only have the rare opportunity to set foot on the theatre space itself, but also within the secret passages in the HKAC building. From Festival Now to Cultural Masseur, the HKAC’s promotion of multi-arts has spanned more than 20 years. The projects started with having only local artists of different specialties but gradually expanded to engaging those from outside of Hong Kong’s borders and even members of the public. As the HKAC continues to venture into new frontiers, it looks forward to making new attempts, staging more diverse exhibitions, collaborating with more cities to explore the infinite possibilities and configurations of multi-arts.

ity Art Lab is an education outreach project that promotes creativity in everyday life. The project is divided into four phases. The first phase, “Art in Connection”, aims to connect students with artists to share their experiences in art. The second phase, “Art in Production”, helps students to realise their creativity. The third phase, “Art in Communities”, enables students to showcase their creativity in different communities. And the last phase, “Art in Contribution”, encourages students to pass on their knowledge and inspirations in art to others through a series of talks, sharing sessions, and documentary film screenings. The first phase of the project was completed in March. Three artists, including musician Hakgwai, choreographer and dancer Hugh Cho, and green architect Tony Yip shared their art experiences with the students in Wong Tai Sin and Yuen Long district. A series of yoga and mindfulness workshops were also organised to stimulate the students’ five senses and encourage them to respond to daily life with arts.

In the cozy space of McAulay Studio in the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the 8-channel sounds brought the audiences to journeys across time and space as well as reality and imagination. From the imagined shipyards back in a century ago to the newly discovered exoplanet Kepler 62e; from the labyrinth in India to a 4-lane highway in Princeton Junction of New Jersey; from fragmented stories of dislocation from 5 European cities to fictional world of Jin Yong’s martial arts novels; these experiences challenge our sense of space. The dark lighting that takes away audience’s abilities to sense the surroundings with eyes forces them to focus on listening. The sense of a solid space dissolves and the space is re-structured into whatever the auditory sense leads to. Sound Forms festival will take audiences to another journey in 2019. Stay tuned and do not miss this!

agore Foundation International, in partnership with the Hong Kong Arts Centre, and with generous support from the National Arts Council of Singapore, presents Jane Lee: Red States, an exhibition by acclaimed Singaporean artist Jane Lee, on 11 May – 10 June 2018 at the Pao Galleries. This defining, mid-career presentation, which includes a retrospective selection of studies and maquettes that trace the chronology of Lee's practice, is the artist’s first solo show in Hong Kong. Red States comprises a diverse yet cohesive mix of new sculptural paintings and site-specific installations produced for this presentation. The exhibition spans the Galleries with paintings, sculptures and a large-scale installation suspended from the ceiling on the top floor, accompanied by studies and reference materials tracing the evolution of Lee’s practice on the lower level. The retrospective portion of the exhibition is curated by Michelle Ho, assistant director of Singapore’s ADM Gallery at the School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University, and former curator at the Singapore Art Museum. Included in the show are works that expand on earlier series including Fetish, one of Lee’s most celebrated group of paintings.

Chairperson, Mrs Cissy Pao-Watari, to chair HKAC’s Building Committee. I quickly learnt the importance of the HKAC in the art ecosystem of Hong Kong and the multi-disciplinary nature of the HKAC’s operations. A ̶What developments have you longed for and finally made happen?

N ̶I have always believed that the HKAC is not just a physical building – it is an organisation that can extend its reach beyond the building in Wan Chai and beyond the borders of Hong Kong. Therefore establishing relationships with other institutions have allowed us to stage programmes and events that showcase Hong Kong’s talent throughout Hong Kong and overseas is one area that I am very happy see continuing to expand. Another area is audience building through better utilisation of our building in Wan Chai. We are blessed with our own premises, and we should make fuller use of it by offering late night events or programmes. On 30 March 2018, HKAC organised very successfully its first late night screening as part of our annual Open House event. A ̶ During your time at HKAC, what were your most memorable events or achievements of HKAC?

N ̶The renovations of our cinema would be one – I think it remains one of the most comfortable, state of the art and good-looking cinemas in Hong Kong. The opening of Comix Home Base in the old Green House on Mallory Street would be another. The most touching event would be the opening of the Time Gallery on the G/F of our building and having Tao Ho and his family attend. And the last would be the events surrounding our 40th Year Anniversary, including the Harbour Arts Sculpture Park, the Sean Scully exhibition, and our 40th Anniversary Gala Fundraising Dinner at Government House, the first time the HKAC has held an event at this historic building. A ̶Do you have any messages for us? N ̶ Keep making HKAC and our school, the Hong

Kong Arts School (HKAS) great by remaining the arts institution for the people of Hong Kong. It is a fantastic organisation run by a dedicated and passionate group of people and I feel very proud and lucky to have worked together with them. I hope I have helped pave the way for HKAC to grow from strength to strength.

C ̶The HKAC was the first cultural institution I came to when I arrived in Hong Kong in 2010. I also learnt recently about the origin and the architect of this building through the Time Gallery in the lobby and I think it is really a great and important place in the history of Hong Kong architecture. A ̶ What is art to you?

C ̶I have been involved in arts appreciation for many years. Art is a language that allows for understanding the world, human experience, and emotions. It is a highly sophisticated form of intellectual and experiential human achievement. Art is an important part of community development and collective and personal enjoyment of life. Because art is of such significance and is, together with health and education, an essential pillar in the development of communities, its place in public budgeting and funding must reflect such significance.

La Vérité (The Truth by Florian Zeller) revolves around two married couples. Michael, married to Lauren, is having an affair with Alice, wife of his best friend Paul. It seems that Lauren and Paul both suspect their partners have been unfaithful, but when Alice guiltily threatens to confess all, Michael is thrown into a panic. The truth, though, proves to be far from straightforward as we cannot be sure who is deceiving whom.
