Drawing on expertise developed and insights gained from designing precision tools for space exploration, a PolyU team has engineered the revolutionary internally motorised minimally invasive robotic system for single-incision or incision-less surgery. 理大團隊憑藉從設計探索太空的精密儀器中所累 積的知識和經驗,開發了一套革命性的內置馬達 微創機械人系統,適用於單切口或無切口手術。

內有限的空間往往令外科醫生感到困惑, 在進行複雜手術中迫不得已地開多個切 口,對身體造成創傷。傳統的機械人手術 有助減輕創傷,但仍需要開多達六個切口,而外科 醫生亦只能感受到有限的觸覺反饋。要克服這些困 難,長路漫漫,仿若無涯宇宙,但工業及系統工程 學系副主任容啟亮教授率領的團隊憑藉在製造航天 精密儀器的經驗,加上科幻模型玩具的啟發,卻成 功研發出創新的單切口或無切口機械人手術系統。

he confined spaces of the body have long confounded surgeons, forcing them to make numerous incisions to perform complex operations, subjecting the body to trauma. Conventional robotic surgery has started to overcome that imposition but still requires up to six incisions and offers limited tactile feedback to surgeons. Nothing could seem further from providing a way of overcoming these limitations than the limitless reaches of outer space. Yet a team led by Prof. Yung Kai-Leung, Associate Head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, harnessing its experience in making precision space implements, with innovation inspired by science fiction toys, has produced a robotic surgical system that requires just a single incision or no incision at all.

Seen in the context of surgical techniques developing over time, this is a remarkable achievement. Robotic surgical systems have only been in use since the 2000s, and the push for minimally invasive procedures predates that by just a decade. Still, robot-assisted surgery is becoming more common, with the number of cases in Hong Kong public and private hospitals doubling in the last six years. There were more than 600,000 cases in the world last year, growing at an annual rate of over 10%.

With this in mind, a team of surgeons from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) approached the PolyU engineers wanting to integrate cutting-edge technologies into a surgical platform that would make robotic surgery safer and less invasive, with the ultimate aim of providing significantly better patient care. The ensuing collaborative project, funded by NISI (HK) Limited – a medical device company specialising in non-invasive surgical research – with support from the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR government, has blazed a new trail in surgical platform design. The resultant Novel Surgical Robotic System (NSRS) with tactile feedback capable of single incision or natural orifice surgery allows surgeons to operate with high precision while being aware of the force applied to their patients. This is a significant breakthrough compared to the systems in current use, with doctors in robotic surgery training often feeling hindered by a lack of ability to feel the tissue they are working on.

在發展多年的手術科技中,這無疑是一項超卓的成 就。機械人手術系統的應用始於 2000 年,近十年 才發展至微創手術。機械人手術越趨普及,在過去 六年間,香港公立及私立醫院的有關個案以雙倍遞 增。去年,全球有共超過六十萬個案,年度增長逾 百分之十。 有見及此,香港大學外科醫生團隊邀請理大工程師 團隊合作,將尖端技術應用在醫療手術上,提升機 械人手術的安全性,以及減低其入侵性,最終的目 標定為病者提供更佳的護理。他們開展的合作項目, 由一家專門拓展無創外科手術研究的公司-香港無 創外科有限公司(NISI)提供經費,同時獲香港特區 政府創新科技署撥款支持,在手術平台設計上開闢 新路向。這嶄新外科手術機械人系統(NSRS)具備 觸覺(力度)反饋,能夠以單切口或經自然腔道進行 手術,讓外科醫生感覺到在病人身上施行的力度, 從而提升手術的精確度。事實上,懂得進行機械人 手術的醫生常因在施行手術時,未能對病者身體組 織有所感應,致令手術增加難度。這系統與現行系 統相比確是一大突破。

From outer to inner space While the architectural design and functionalities of the NSRS are based on the professional insights and experience of seasoned surgeons, the implementation of the design relied heavily on the PolyU team’s experience producing tool systems for use in space exploration. Among other achievements, Prof. Yung’s team developed a Rock Corer for the European Space Agency’s Mars Express mission, the Soil Preparation System for the Sino-Russian Phobos-Grunt mission and advanced robotic systems for China’s Chang’e 3 lunar exploration mission and the upcoming Chang’e 5 mission. That experience made team members proficient in miniaturising complex machinery with high strength and power-to-weight ratios that is capable of operating reliably in extreme environments. Prof. Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, said, “Our multi-disciplinary approach of innovatively combining materials’ properties, design and mechatronics has led to the production of reduced-size, light-weight and high-precision instruments. The next challenge is the application of these space technologies for civilian purposes.”

The NSRS is a highly portable platform that can be mounted on any standard surgical table. It features a 3D camera, and can be fitted with three or more surgical robotic arms that take different tools. Each robotic arm is driven by internal micro-motors and capable of up to 7 degrees of freedom, while the whole robotic system is capable of up to 10 degrees of freedom. Drawing heavily on the PolyU team’s familiarity with space technology, the NSRS features motors that are both small enough and able to generate sufficient force to perform various surgical operations inside the human body.

從外太空到人體內腔 雖然外科手術機械人系統的設計意念和功能是沿 自資深外科醫生的專業意見及經驗,但要落實設計 則有賴理大團隊在研製太空探索工具系統當中積 累的經驗。容教授的團隊曾經研發出用於歐洲太空 總署「火星快車」計劃的岩芯取樣器、用於中俄「火 衛一 ─ 土壤」任務的行星表土準備系統,以及用 於中國嫦娥三號及未來的嫦娥五號探月工程的先進 機械人系統。這些經驗有助團隊成員熟練地把複雜 機械微型化,但仍可保持高強度及高動力重量比率, 並能可靠地在極端環境中運作。

外科手術機械人系統是個便攜式平台,可裝設在任 何標準手術床上。它配備三維攝像機,亦可同時放 入三支或更多配備不同儀器的機械臂。每支機械臂 由內置微型馬達驅動,並可作七個自由度的轉動, 而整個機械人系統則可作十個自由度的轉動。外科 手術機械人系統是應用了理大團隊所熟識的航天科 技,配備體積細小但力度足夠的馬達,可以在人體 內進行各項手術。

More than meets the eye

Compared to the currently dominant system on the market, which apart from needing to make multiple incisions cannot perform incision-less surgery, lacks tactile feedback and is bulky, the NSRS opens the possibility of surgery performed through natural orifices. In asking itself how that could be achieved, the PolyU team turned to the concept of articulated toys, such as the Transformer vehicles that can be dissembled and reassembled into robots. They applied this to the surgical robotic arms, fitting them with small-footprint, articulated parts that could be reassembled inside the human body, expanding and transforming as they are adapted to the needs of different surgical procedures. Describing the team’s breakthrough, Prof. Yung remarked, “We are delighted to note that this PolyU engineering innovation will help turn a new page in minimally invasive surgery, thus enhancing the well-being of patients.” Yet the team is also well aware that the development process is not over yet, with very important feedback being received from surgeons and used to further optimise the system. Animal trials have validated the system’s functionality and benefit in gall bladder removal in a live pig, with the latest operation taking less than an hour.

Ultimately, the NSRS will be used in a range of abdominal and pelvic surgical operations. The surgical team will now move on to more complicated procedures in animal trials and on human cadavers, taking both single-incision and natural-orifice approaches. As the PolyU team noted in explaining the importance of their work, “the future of all surgeries will be highly technologically driven with robotics as an integral part.”

Newly appointed Chairman of the PolyU Council, Mr Chan Tze-ching, relishes a challenge and has just the right credentials to ensure that the University meets the changing needs of the community it serves. 理大校董會新任主席陳子政先生樂於接受挑戰, 正是帶領大學的最佳人選,可以確保大學能夠回應 不斷變化的社會需求。

“W

e have to recognise that PolyU is part of our community; we don’t exist in a vacuum”, said Mr Chan Tze-ching when asked to describe the focus of this three-year chairmanship. “The only way to justify our existence, whether it’s research, the transfer of our knowledge or the grooming of students, will be to ensure that we remain useful to the community of Hong Kong. ” This will be a particular challenge, he explained, because more than any other city, Hong Kong is evolving. Rapid developments in such widely varied areas as transport, housing, law and order, and relations with the Chinese mainland mean that the University needs to keep its finger on Hong Kong’s pulse to stay relevant in educational offerings and research coverage. And no-one could be more adept at ensuring PolyU is up to that challenge than Mr Chan. With thirty years of experience in the banking and finance sector, and almost a decade of post-retirement involvement in numerous commercial and public service organizations, Mr Chan has served on the Council since 2005, first as a member, then as Deputy Chairman and since 1 January 2016 in his current role of Chairman. Not only is he intimately aware of how the University operates, but he also brings a keen commercial sense to bear on his duties. The commerce sector cares about setting goals on accountability and financial discipline; he thinks that these are qualities that are also extremely important in other organizations.

子政先生被問及其三年主席任期的重點工 作時說:「我們必須知道理大是我們社區的 一部分,並非一個獨立的個體。無論科研、 知識轉移,或是培育學生,都必須以造福香港社群 為依歸,大學的存在才有意義。」他認為這將會是 一大挑戰,因為相比其他城市,香港演變的步伐更 加急速。交通、房屋、法律治安,以及與中國內地 的關係等各方面都高速發展,令大學更需要緊貼香 港脈搏,以期在教育課程及科研範疇方面都能適當 地配合。而能夠帶領理大迎接這些挑戰的領導者, 非陳先生莫屬。

陳先生在銀行及財經界縱橫三十年,退休後的十年 仍積極參與多家商業和公共服務機構的工作。自 2005 年起,他先後出任校董會成員及副主席,並於 2016 年 1 月 1 日出任主席一職。他不僅清楚了解大 學運作,更善用其敏銳的營商觸覺於校董會職務上。 商界著重訂立問責和財務相關的目標,他認為這些 目標對其他機構同樣非常重要。

Describing PolyU as a particularly complex organization, Mr Chan remarked that it “has long been a very vibrant educational institution”. In his time on the Council, he has seen a shift from a stage of building the basics in the early years after receiving university status, to the broadening of focus and concomitant open sharing of ideas under current president, Prof. Timothy W. Tong. This evolving culture of tolerance and receptiveness to a diversity of viewpoints, he reflected, explains why PolyU, in the public’s eyes, is much less politically charged than some other universities. Intent on maintaining and extending that culture, Mr Chan has set about ensuring an open atmosphere in Council, so all members can freely express what they think about the University, what more and what less it could do in certain areas.

Mr Chan thinks that the University has to know its strength and weakness and bring out the best. In a broad sense, that would involve further enhancing its teaching, learning and research, and taking on more initiatives like ServiceLearning. The ultimate goal of education at PolyU, he continually emphasised, was to “develop the right people to fill the needs of society”. Given that PolyU has the largest student intake of all UGC-funded institutions in Hong Kong, this is indeed a demanding task. Yet Mr Chan noted that PolyU students are hardworking, pragmatic and have ideals, with most of them heavily focused on obtaining a quality education. Staff, too, have indicated to Mr Chan that education quality should always be a paramount concern. Indeed, providing future leaders with precisely the right knowledge to serve Hong Kong will be critical to the University’s ongoing success.

陳先生形容理大是一所相當複雜的機構,更強調 它「一直是一所充滿活力的教育院校」。 服務校董會 期間,他見證著大學的改變:獲大學資格後的最初 幾年,重視的是建立基礎,其後現任校長唐偉章教授 接任,便開拓發展範疇,並鼓勵集思廣益。他表 示, 包容和接納不同意見的文化漸成氣候,正好解 釋為何理大在公眾眼中比其他大學較少政治色彩。 為堅守與延續這種文化,陳先生在校董會致力推動 開放氛圍,讓所有成員都可以自由發表對大學的想 法,並且就大學宜加強和減省之工作提出意見。 陳先生認為大學必須認清本身的強項和弱點,並將 優勢盡情發揮。概括而言,大學應進一步提升教學 與研究質素,並推出更多如服務學習等的新猷。他 不斷強調,理大的教育抱負在於「培育社會所需的 人才」。理大作為香港教資會資助院校收生最多的 大學,這是一項艱巨的任務。然而,陳先生指出, 理大學生勤奮、實幹而有理想,他們大多數追求優 質的教育。教職員亦曾向他表示,教育質素應是大 學首要的關注。誠然,能讓明日領袖學以致用,服 務香港,將是理大持續成功的關鍵。

Intent on maintaining dialogue with a broad range of stakeholders – from the government, students, staff, supporters and alumni to society at large – Mr Chan always seeks to advance the interest of the University through promoting mutual understanding and consensus. That, indeed, could be the core legacy of his tenure as Chairman. “As a leader of a university, my mission is to rally the energy and support of all these different stakeholders and work towards a better future for our students and our community”, he believed.

Mr Chan shares his experience with the awardees of the Outstanding Student Awards 2015 and encourages them to serve the society with their hearts and minds. 陳先生與 2015 年卓越學生獎得主分享其經驗,並鼓勵他們以熱誠及智慧服務社會。

Mr Chan is also acutely aware that PolyU research, with its long tradition of benefiting the business and industry, has to maintain its social relevance. He pointed out that the University was one of the first educational institutions in Hong Kong to establish a Knowledge Transfer Committee to ensure that research outcomes were transferred properly and efficiently. “This is something that we have to continue to build on”, he stressed, “and it was ever more important now that the government was committing substantial resources to establishing its Innovation and Technology Bureau.” PolyU is ready to benefit from this development because its outstanding track record of applied research and knowledge transfer already sets it apart from other universities with less experience.

A multicultural, multilingual group of aspiring young talents has arrived in Hong Kong on the critical Asian leg of a ground-breaking hospitality programme offered exclusively by PolyU, the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) in Switzerland and the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston (UH) in the United States. 一群來自不同文化背景、操不同語言的有為青年 才俊正匯聚香港,修讀一項嶄新酒店管理課程的 重要東方環節,該課程由理大、瑞士洛桑酒店管 理學院及美國休斯頓大學康拉德 · 希爾頓酒店及 餐飲管理學院共同開辦。

Describing the tripartite programme as “the first of its kind”, Prof. Kaye Chon, Dean of SHTM, elaborated that “the MSc in Global Hospitality Business raises the bar for higher education in one of the world’s fastest growing industrie.” Indeed, with an international, business-centred and highly demanding curriculum, the programme is offering students first-hand insights into the specificities of hotel and tourism markets on three continents, along with strong professional exposure. This has had immediate benefits. Swiss student Rubina Insam, who has broad commercial and hospitality work experience, commented that even before arriving in Hong Kong she had been able to extend her network by a minimum of 50 hospitality professionals.

Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston to offer the pioneering Master of Science (MSc) in Global Hospitality Business programme.

Cultural immersion is key The cohort of 27 carefully selected students comes from four different continents, has 21 nationalities and speaks 23 languages. This diversity in itself will ensure a world of cultural and social insight within the student body, which will be enhanced by the semester already spent in Switzerland, the time in Hong Kong, a final semester in the United States and a three-month residency for a consultancy project at an international hospitality company.

As Dr Catherine Cheung, SHTM Associate Dean and the programme’s Hong Kong leader, put it, “Cultural immersion is a key to a holistic approach to the global hospitality business. This would ensure strong international perspectives and in-depth understanding of local markets among graduates.” The development of such characteristics is already reaping benefits. Speaking on behalf of the students, Hugo Manzini, a Swiss national with hospitality experience in both his native country and Belgium said, “Thanks to this programme, we really have a clear competitive advantage, and that makes us all the more attractive in the job market.” Endorsed by leading hospitality companies such as Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt International and the Jumeirah Group, the programme features advanced academic learning, intensive workshops delivered by industry professionals, the completion of a report using live industry data, business field trips and consultancy projects for leading global hospitality chains. Discussing the five main courses offered in Hong Kong, covering areas ranging from marketing to hospitality business strategies, mainland Chinese student Fei Xu remarked, “They provide us deep insight about different aspects of the hospitality industry in Asia.”

With PolyU’s SHTM at the educational forefront of the Asian wave sweeping the global hospitality and tourism sector, the students have also benefited from highly developed links with both regional and global hospitality experts. This, in turn, has offered them key insights into industry dynamics. For instance, on their field trip to Macau they learned from representatives of the Macau Government Tourism office that the gambling industry might well be what most people associate the city with. However, the government is putting in great effort to attract corporate visitors and family tourists in an effort to diversify the current customer segmentation in hotels. A further tour to Beijing and Shanghai promises to offer more insights into the evolving nature of hospitality in mainland China.

In Hong Kong, a four-day Boot Camp conducted by well-renowned HVS Consulting immersed the students in critical hotel data, the results of market studies and the benefits of associated research. Follow an opening seminar led by the firm’s founder Mr Steve Rushmore, the students learned about owners’ and managers’ roles in management, contract negotiation, and the techniques needed for identifying the value of hotel real estate.

A

key limitation to research conducted in space has long been the cost of developing, constructing and deploying satellites. With so many resources needed, few organizations have been able to launch experimental payloads. That is about to change, thanks to a space development team led by Prof. Yung Kai-leung, Associate Head of PolyU’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Aerospace Dongfanghong Development Ltd. in Shenzhen. In September 2015, China successfully launched the “20 satellites in one rocket” of Long March 6. In this historical mission, they jointly developed a microsatellite platform and a deployment system. The research team designed the microsatellite platform and deployment system which were installed in the “Kaituo-1B” microsatellite. Being the first such space device developed by Hong Kong, the invention has advantages including lowcost, light-weight, easy-to-assemble, simple-to-manufacture, reusable in ground tests and spaceflight proven. On the day of the rocket launch,“Kaituo-1B” piggybacked on its mother satellite “Kaituo-1A” and was separated at 500 km altitude to perform a series of verification tests and experiments in space. Among those experiments was the “Integrated Experimental Payload” designed by Dr Cheng Ching-hsiang, Assistant Professor of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and his team. The objective was to monitor ground images, space particles and chamber environment. The designed life span of “Kaituo-1B” is three months. It is expected that “Kaituo-1B” will de-orbit eight years later and return to the atmosphere without creating any space debris. This microsatellite technology will simplify the procedures and reduce the costs of future space research experiments, benefiting a wide range of disciplines. For example, low cost space-experiments will become possible in the tertiary and secondary education sectors, which is sure to arouse interest in science among students. A critical use in the aviation industry could be in tracing air traffic. In the advanced materials and pharmaceutical industries, the low cost of using the platform for zero-gravity experiments is likely to expedite the development of new materials. The team is now looking to optimise the platform design, reduce its weight and development cost, and enhance its ease of use.

In view of this, Dr Wong Man-kin and his research team at the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, in collaboration with the Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, developed fluorescent probes for the rapid detection of formaldehyde in food.

有見及此,應用生物及化學科技學系黃文健博士及 其研究團隊與廣東出入境檢驗檢疫局合作,研發出 一種熒光探針,可快速測試食品中的甲醛含量。

Traditional methods of measuring formaldehyde levels require expensive instruments, sophisticated operational skills, tedious sample preparation and time-consuming analysis but are limited by their low sensitivity, rendering them unsuitable for on-site food safety inspection. This innovative technology puts the chemical coupling of amine-functionalised resins, formaldehyde and fluorescent dyes via gold catalysis to good use, enabling the fluorescent probes to detect formaldehyde in food with high selectivity and stability. After chemical bonding, the resins surface will turn fluorescent blue under hand-held ultraviolet light. Hence, inspectors can easily detect the formaldehyde concentration by observing brightness of the fluorescent colour with naked eyes. Not requiring expensive instruments or complicated operation, this invention can test 10 food samples in one go within an hour, making it an ideal solution for on-site food safety inspection and frontline quality control. This probing technology has passed the initial review for a China patent. The related paper was published in Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, a leading journal in organic chemistry. Looking ahead, the research team will continue to enhance the formaldehyde detection method by developing a new class of tunable fluorescent dyes and high throughput rapid detection formats.

傳統測量甲醛含量的方法需採用昂貴的儀器、複 雜的操作技巧、繁複的樣本準備工序,以及費時 的分析,而且其靈敏度低,並不適用於對食品作 即場的安全檢測。 這創新技術善用金催化劑結合含位阻大胺的樹脂聚 合物、甲醛和熒光炔烴的化學耦合反應,使熒光探 針具備高選擇性和穩定性,從而有效檢測食物中的 甲醛含量。耦合反應完成後,在手提式紫外光燈照 射下,樹脂聚合物表面會發出藍色熒光,檢測員憑 肉眼分辨熒光的強度,便可得知食物樣本中甲醛的 濃度。這項發明不需要昂貴儀器和複雜操作,更可 於一小時內同時檢測十個食物樣本,無疑是對食品 作即場安全檢測和前線品質監控的理想方案。 這探針技術已通過中國專利申請初審,相關學術論 文刊載於有機化學界權威期刊《有機及生物份子化 學》。展望未來,研究團隊將繼續完善快速測試技術, 研發新型可調式熒光染料及高通量快速檢測模式。

n recent years, formaldehyde has been illegally used in food processing for bleaching and preservation, arousing health concerns among the general public. Soya bean sticks, mung bean vermicelli, hydrated tripe and chicken feet, etc., are at most risk. Large-amount ingestion can cause vomiting, coma, renal injury and possible death. There is also some concern about the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde in humans. Problematically, the compound is colourless and difficult to detect in food.

Window washing is always considered a strenuous exercise associated with the danger of falling. Imagine how painstaking it is to clean the windows of a 50-plus-storey skyscraper with a squeegee and a bucket of soapy water. It is no wonder that window-washing services are costly. Now thanks to a PolyU invention, dirt on windows can be effortlessly rinsed off with water or rain. 清洗窗戶常被視為費力的差事,更有失足墮樓的危險。試想利用一把膠掃及一桶肥皂水,清洗樓高五十多 層的大廈是何等艱苦費力,難怪洗窗服務收費高昂。如今,藉著理大的一項發明,大家可以亳不費力地透 過清水或雨水便可清洗窗戶上的污漬。

onventional self-cleaning glass curtain walls use chemical vapour deposition or sputtering technologies. These thin-film technologies require a high vacuum or intense heat, which are costly and thus not widely used. Led by Prof. Yang Hong-xing and Dr Lu Lin at the Department of Building Services Engineering, a research team recently developed a costeffective, self-cleaning nano-coating for curtain walls. The coating can simply be silk-screened onto the glass at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. With its super-hydrophilic character and thicker paste, the coating shows superior cleaning performance and a potent photocatalytic property. Under photocatalysis, organic dirt is dissolved. It spreads out water nicely and brushes away inorganic dust on the surface along with rain.

這塗料可在室溫和常壓下,利用簡單絲網印刷技術可 印在玻璃上。塗料具備高親水特性,經加厚後,清潔 效力及光催化特性超卓,在紫外光催化下,有機污垢 會被塗料分解。它有效擴散水分子,而依附於塗層表 面的無機塵埃可輕易地被雨水清洗掉。 楊教授解釋:「為使自潔塗料清晰透光,我們把塗層 粒子縮小至納米單位(約五微米),比可見光線波長 還要小,以抑制瑞利散射效應。」作為水溶性複合 塗料,這納米塗層不含任何重金屬,只含微量可揮 發性有機化合物,並不損害環境。 此外,塗層比玻璃可承受更高溫度,印上塗料的玻 璃可以再加熱強化,而塗層受熱後更堅固耐用,不 易刮花,在正常使用的情況下,可使用二十年以上。 除了玻璃幕牆、鏡子、玻璃窗外,光伏電池及不銹 鋼表面亦可透過塗上這種納米複合塗層,享有自行 清潔的功效。

Prof. Yang explained, “To make the self-cleaning coating clear, we reduced its particle size to the nano order (about 5 nm), which is much smaller than the wavelength of visible light, to preclude the Rayleigh scattering effect.” Better still, as a water-based composite paste, the nano-coating is environmentally safe, containing only trace amounts of volatile organic compounds and no heavy metals.

In addition, the coating can withstand higher temperatures than glass. After application and tempering, it forms a robust and durable layer that resists scratching. Under normal usage, it will last for more than 20 years. Apart from curtain walls, mirrors and glass windows, the coating can be readily applied to photovoltaic cells and stainless steel surfaces, which will benefit most from its self-cleaning property.

ver the years, scientists have confirmed that human genetic sequence variations can be associated with disease susceptibility, and this valuable information has been translated into healthcare applications. Such sequence variations and their associated risk parameters, however, are optimised for Western populations and Chinese population have not fully benefited from this genetic advance due to genetic difference. In view of this, PolyU’s Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology and the Faculty of Health Science and University Hospital of the Macau University of Science and Technology cooperated to establish Macau’s first genome database. The objective was to provide a focused understanding of the genomic sequence variations of the Macau population for disease-risk prediction. Using genome-wide single nucleotide variation profiles, the research team led by Prof. Terence Lau Lok-ting, Director of Innovation and Technology Development at PolyU predicted the Macau population’s risk for 16 common diseases and compared them to those of the northern Chinese, European and American populations. One of the findings showed that Macau citizens have higher genetic risks of lung, breast, ovarian and prostate cancers but lower risks of Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases.

Also, the research team conducted personalised genetic risk testing in which they predicted the inherited risks of an individual to develop a series of severe diseases during his or her lifetime. The disease-risk profiles generated will be useful to physicians in providing medical intervention and personalised health advice and care. As Prof. Lau put it, “The database facilitates the study of the association between genetic variations and diseases among the Macau population, thus providing important references for the future development of public healthcare and health policies.”

年以來,科學家已發現基因的排列組合與 疾病的易感性有所關聯,並將這些資料應 用於醫護的範疇。然而,這些基因排列組 合及相關風險參項主要適用於西方社群。由於基因 的差異,華人難以受惠於這些基因分析的進展。

有見及此,理大應用生物及化學科技學系與澳門科 技大學健康科學學院及科大醫院合作建立澳門首個 基因資料庫,研究澳門人口的基因排列組合,以預 測疾病風險。 理大創新及科技發展總監劉樂庭教授率領研究團 隊,利用收集的全基因組單核苷酸組合圖譜資料, 預測澳門人口對十六種常見疾病的風險,並與中國 北方及歐美的數據對比分析。其中一項結果顯示, 澳門市民患肺癌、乳腺癌、卵巢癌和前列腺癌的遺 傳風險較高,但患阿爾茨海默氏症(老人痴呆症﹚ 以及其他神經系統疾病的風險則較低。

A worldwide investigation into the happiness of various ethnic groups has shown a significant link between genetic makeup and perceived happiness. 一項有關不同種族快樂程度的全球性研究發現, 基因與主觀快樂感有顯著的關連。

joint study by Prof. Michael Harris Bond at PolyU’s Department of Management and Marketing and Prof. Michael Minkov at Varna University of Management in Bulgaria analysed self-evaluated degrees of happiness in various countries and regions. This was achieved by summing the ratings (very happy, fairly happy, not quite happy and unhappy) from the World Values Survey (2000-2014) and comparing them with A allele genetic data from the same places. The findings showed that nations with the highest prevalence of the A allele are those in which citizens perceive themselves happiest. These included Ghana and Nigeria in West Africa and northern Latin American nations such as Mexico and Columbia. In contrast, citizens in Arab nations (Iraq and Jordan) and East Asian nations (Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, Thailand and Taiwan), with the lowest prevalence of the allele, were the least likely to rate themselves as “very happy”. The presence of the A allele in the fatty acid amide hydrolase gene variant can enhance sensory pleasure and alleviate pain. The correlation between this allele and self-evaluated happiness was thus particularly strong, stronger even than the influential factors of wealth, social stability and disease. This explained why Nigerians reported feeling happier than Germans, and why people in nations with high incidences of homicide and robbery (such as in northern Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa) reported high levels of happiness.

Further explicating the findings, Prof. Bond noted, “Climatic differences are also significantly associated with national differences in happiness.” Higher occurrences of the A allele were found in equatorial and tropical environments in the Americas and Africa, and lower occurrences were found around the Mediterranean Sea than in Northern Europe. According to Prof. Minkov, it seems that some equatorial and tropical environments select for a higher occurrence of the A allele as a counterbalance to environmental stressors.

ith the global transformation of economies from industrial to service orientations, the expectations placed on future leaders have changed remarkably. The holistic development of students, covering their professional competencies, moral character and caring disposition, is now in high demand. PolyU has been offering a credit-bearing Service Leadership subject for undergraduates since 2012. Apart from lectures, the subject features experiential and reflective learning. Students are also engaged in role play, group discussion, debates and other class activities as they learn to be service leaders. Overall, they are expected to gain a better understanding of the service leadership model and the related core beliefs. To measure the effectiveness of service leadership education at PolyU, a research team led by Prof. Daniel Shek Tan-lei, Associate Vice President (Undergraduate Programme), has conducted a series of evaluation studies, including objective outcome, subjective outcome, process and qualitative evaluations, of the creditbearing courses and non-credit bearing programmes.

Findings based on qualitative evaluation provided additional evidence that the service leadership endeavours at PolyU are nurturing service leaders, making students more reflective and more aware of the importance of a service mindset. As one student put it, “This course helps me to know more about myself. Through the course, I have learnt more about how to communicate with others and care for the others.” Related academic papers have been published in international refereed journals, including International Journal on Disability and Human Development. A book entitled “Promoting Service Leadership Qualities in University Students” edited by Prof. Shek and Dr Po Chung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership and Management Limited, was also published by Springer in 2015.

著全球經濟結構從工業型轉向服務型,社會 對未來領袖的期望亦有顯著的改變。學生的 全人發展越見重要,他們必須具備專業才 能、道德品格和關愛素質。

自 2012 年起,理大為本科生開辦一項服務領袖的 學分科目。除了課堂之外,這些科目亦著重體驗及 反思學習。學生通過角色扮演、小組討論、辯論及 其他課堂活動,對服務領袖須具備的條件及相關核 心信念有更深的認識,從而學習成為服務領袖。 為評估理大服務領袖計劃的成效,協理副校長(本 科生課程)石丹理教授率領研究團隊對學分課程和 非學分計劃作出有系統的評估研究,包括客觀成效、 主觀成效、過程及質性評估。 綜合各項研究結果,顯示這些學科和計劃對學生有 正面的影響。他們在正向發展、生活滿意度,以及 服務領袖質素方面的表現均有所提升。 質性研究所得的結果亦證明理大在培育服務領袖方面 的努力成效顯著,讓學生更有反思能力,並意識到有 服務心志的重要性。正如一位學生指出:「這課程有 助我更了解自己,讓我學會與人溝通及關顧別人。」 研究相關的學術文章已刊載於多份同行評審的國際期 刊,包括《殘障與人類發展國際期刊》。此外,施普 林格(Springer)於 2015 年出版由石教授和香港服務 領導與管理學院主席鍾普洋博士編輯的著作《提升大 學生的服務領袖素質》。

Prof. Winnie Cheng and Dr Gail Forey at PolyU’s Department of English have partnered with Dr Jane Lockwood at City University of Hong Kong to study how communicating via the phone and computer across national boundaries impacts customer care, intercultural meanings, training, quality assurance, staff assessment and globalisation. For over 10 years they have studied what this emerging discourse looks like, with specific reference to call centre messages, online and SMS chat interactions and virtual team meetings.

理大英文系鄭梁慧蓮教授及 Gail Forey 博士與香港 城市大學 Jane Lockwood 博士合作,探討透過電話 及電腦的跨國界溝通如何影響客戶服務、跨文化意 義、培訓、質素保證、員工評核及全球化。過去十 年,她們透過研究傳呼中心留言、網上及短訊交流, 以及虛擬會議等去了解新興的交談模式。

The initial research started with customer calls to a range of commercial enterprises. Calling from places such as the UK, USA or Australia for assistance, customers would generally be linked to customer service representatives in the Philippines or India. The study analysed the language and causes of communication breakdown, finding that grammar and accent were not dominant issues. They explored how customer care is carried out in different cultures, how to deal with frustrated and angry customers and how training and assessment should reflect authentic call centre interaction. The findings were shared with industry to enhance communication, intercultural meaning and training.

初步研究以客戶致電商務企業的來電作為開始。來 自英國、美國或澳洲的客戶求助來電通常被接駁到 菲律賓或印度的客戶服務代表。研究分析了語言及 溝通障礙的原因,並發現語法及口音並非主要原因。 她們探討客戶服務如何在不同文化背景下進行、如 何處理不愉快及憤怒的客戶,以及員工培訓及評估 應如何切合傳呼中心的真實互動情況。她們與業界 分享了這些研究結果,以期提升溝通、跨文化意義 及培訓的水平。

The research team has also examined the developing discourse features of virtual team meetings and online chats. The meetings of six project teams involving onshore and offshore colleagues working collaboratively were recorded, transcribed and analysed. In a case involving an IT project team comprising Australia-wide and Indian membership, the Australian manager dominated the talk and controlled the turn-taking for conversations. He used direct statements that often contracted options for others to respond and closed down interaction. Research also found that onshore managers frequently used metaphorical language and idiomatic expressions, which increased the complexity of meaning. Such findings could inform training or coaching solutions to enhance collaborative and inclusive virtual team meetings.

研究團隊亦探討了虛擬小組會議及網上交談特性的 發展,並分析六個涉及本土和離岸同事協作的項目 小組會議之對話錄音和文字記錄。在一個個案中, 澳洲及印度成員組成資訊科技項目小組,澳洲藉經 理主導並控制發言的先後次序。他直接的詞句往往 限制了其他人回應及互動的機會。研究亦發現,本 土經理較多使用比喻及地道言詞,令語意增添複雜 性。這些研究結果有助制定培訓或輔導方案,使虛 擬小組會議可提升合作和包容的氣氛。

The findings from the research have been published in nearly 30 academic articles and book chapters.

房切除是最普遍治療乳癌的方法之一,患者 接著可能進行乳房重塑手術。但並非所有曾 接受乳房切除手術的女士都合資格或願意重 返醫院接受重塑手術,她們因而選擇佩戴義乳及特製 胸圍。義乳有不同形狀、尺碼及物料,大多數用家主 要是以義乳的舒適度作為選購準則。有見及此,紡織 及製衣學系 Kristina Shin 博士率領研究團隊研發出一 套新型義乳、胸圍及夾扣,讓切除乳房後的女士可感 受舒適的肌膚溫感及合適的濕度。

mastectomy is one of the most common types of breast cancer treatments. It is sometimes followed by breast reconstruction surgery, but not all women who have undergone mastectomies are qualified or want to revisit the hospital and thus, opt to wear breast prostheses and special bras. Breast prostheses come in many shapes, sizes and materials, but comfort is the essential criterion for most users. In view of this, a research team at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing led by Dr Kristina Shin has developed a set of novel prosthesis, a bra, and a garment clip that provide excellent thermal and moisture comfort for mastectomy women. The research team gathered multidisciplinary advice in the research and development process from experts in different areas including psychologists, oncologists and product designers. The designs of the novel post-mastectomy products were based on a survey of 200 Hong Kong mastectomy women. The products comprise three patented parts: a prosthesis, clip and mastectomy bra. The breast prosthetic device – with a wavy textured chest-wall contact section, a hollow inner-core and ventilation holes in the lower section – minimises sweat on the chest by increasing sweat evaporation. The post-mastectomy bra reduces heat and moisture inside the bra through specially designed air ventilation structures. Another part, the garment clip with a pouch, enables users to wear fashion bras without prosthesis pockets.

研究團隊在研發過程綜合跨領域的專業意見,他們 包括心理學家、外科醫生及產品設計師,並根據一 項訪問了二百名接受手術後的香港女士的調查所得 的資料而設計出新型的乳房切除後使用產品。 這產品由三個專利部分組成:義乳、夾扣及特製胸 圍。義乳配備波浪質感的胸壁接觸部件、中空的內 核心及低位的透氣孔,以增加汗水揮發,從而減少 胸口流汗。供乳房切除後使用的胸圍透過特別設計 的透氣結構,降低胸圍內的溫度和濕度。另一部分 是連接小袋位的衣物夾扣,讓用家無需使用義乳墊 亦可穿戴時尚胸圍。 這嶄新的義乳及胸圍已通過溫感及濕度測試,並與 傳統義乳及胸圍進行比較。研究團隊收集沿胸圍鋼 圈位置的杯位底部兩個位置的數據:緊貼皮膚位置 及義乳與胸圍之間位置,因為調查結果顯示,杯位 底部是胸圍最熱和濕的地方。結果發現,新發明的 義乳及胸圍令用家更感涼快,而緊貼皮膚位置及義 乳與特製胸圍間的微環境亦較涼爽。 這些產品的設計概念集合上述多項優點及高調適 性,更可應用於其他內衣,例如多功能內衣、束身 衣、連身裙、睡衣、運動胸圍及運動服飾。 這項發明在去年的韓國首爾國際發明展中獲得金獎 及伊朗第一發明及研究者學院文憑。

Thermal and humidity tests were conducted to compare the clothing comfort of the newly-invented prosthesis and bra to that of the conventional set. Data were collected from the two locations of the bottom cup: near the skin and between the prosthesis and the bra. Bottom cup area along the underwire section was selected because it was identified as the most hot and humid area of the bra by the survey participants. The results showed that the newly invented prosthesis and bra provide cooler body core temperatures, and cooler and drier micro-environments both near the skin and between the prosthesis and the mastectomy bra.

This invention won a Gold Prize and Diploma from the First Institute Inventors and Researchers in I.R. Iran at the Seoul International Invention Fair in Korea last year.

s there an easier way of doing this? Dr Andrew W.H. Ip and his research team at PolyU's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering have a solution. Supported by Sino Parking Services Limited, they have developed the IoTbased Advanced Automobile Parking Navigation System. Integrating various emerging technologies including an IoT-based cloud service, wireless sensors and middleware through powerful big data analytics, the system operates through a mobile app and offers real-time information. Drivers can easily identify nearby car parks with vacant spaces, and can also use the app to navigate via GPS to the preferred parking lot.

This smart system has won various awards, including a Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury and a Special Merit Award at the 43rd International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, two Silver Awards on Implementation Excellence and on Application Innovation at the Hong Kong Internet of Things Awards by GSI Hong Kong, and Big Data Analysis Awards 2014 on Variety by the China and Hong Kong Enterprise Market Development Association.

The system is currently in use in Sino car parks incorporating with near-field communication and other customer relations management protocols. Drivers can settle parking-related payments and receive notifications of the latest promotional deals from Sino via the app. In addition, the system can be connected to environmental sensors to monitor conditions such as temperature and air quality within the car park. When certain levels are reached, exhaust fans are turned on to freshen and cool the air.

Department head’s practical vision 系主任的務實願景

P

rof. Ladegaard has a tendency to take the path less travelled. Having studied Scandinavian languages and literature at the undergraduate level and English language and literature at both the undergraduate and Master’s levels, he earned his PhD in Sociolinguistics from Odense University in his native Denmark in 1996, before teaching for 11 years at the University of Southern Denmark. With a keen interest in all things English, he taught a year at Cambridge University and spent three sabbaticals in the UK: at Cardiff University in Wales, Birkbeck College, London and at the School of Oriental and African Studies. Yet, a desire for adventure and a love of Asia brought him to Hong Kong in 2006. Shifting to PolyU from Hong Kong Baptist University late last year, Prof. Ladegaard knew he would be leading a high performing department. While the need for more external funding, more research and more internationalisation is always pertinent in any university department, he also had a more mundane goal in mind. “My dream for the English Department is first and foremost that we share the same vision”, he said. “Heads can have visions but they are meaningless unless they become shared.”

When Prof. Hans Ladegaard joined the Department of English as Head in September 2015, he brought with him more than academic prowess and administrative skill – he also carried a vision of developing a common goal for staff, and making the department a more enjoyable place to work for everybody. Hans Ladegaard 教授於 2015 年 9 月出任英文系系主任, 他為學系帶來的不僅是學術實力及行政才幹,還有他的願 景,他希望教職員可以有共同的目標,並且可以在更愉快 的學系環境中工作。

Prof. Ladegaard wishes that department staff share the same vision. Ladegaard 教授希望學系仝人抱持同一願景。

A second element of Prof. Ladegaard’s eminently practical vision is to make the Department’s work environment even happier, and to involve everybody in creating a stimulating environment for teaching and research. Drawing on his own long experience in global communication research, he recalled a comment offered by the leader of an exceptionally high-performing team in a production company. When asked why her team outperformed all others she immediately replied : “We’re a happy team – a happy staff is a performing staff.”

Ladegaard 教授另一務實的願景,就是為學系締造更 愉快的工作環境,讓每位教職員都能參與其中,營造 啟發思維的教研環境。Ladegaard 教授在環球傳意 研究經驗豐富,他憶起在一家製作公司中表現非常卓 越的小組,當其領導人員被問及為何其小組表現出眾 時,她馬上回答:「我們是一個愉快的團隊,愉快的 員工自然是表現出色的員工。」

In that respect, the Department of English already has a distinct advantage. Pointing to the Department’s existing ethos, Prof. Ladegaard noted, “It is full of high achievers in teaching and research.” With teaching interests that span the spectrum of language and communication, he has published research results widely in the areas of intercultural communication, language attitudes and stereotypes, language and gender, narratives of migration, pragmatics and discourse analysis. His book on powerlessness and repression in the life stories of domestic migrant workers in Hong Kong will be published by Routledge later this year.

Advancing neuroscience research to restore patient’s cognitive function and dignity 促進腦神經學研究 重建患者的認知功能與尊嚴

余其殷教授還是倫敦大學學院心理學本科 生的時候,他已對大腦異常如何引致精神 分裂症狀這議題深感興趣。在牛津大學修 讀哲學博士學位期間,他首次研究這疾病。他發現 在患有誘導行為缺乏症的老鼠測試模型中,抗精神 分裂症藥物可使動物行為正常化。他先後在英國、 香港及瑞士出任博士後研究職位。隨後,他在蘇黎 世聯邦理工學院工作逾十年,並研發出患精神分裂 症的老鼠測試模型,掌握到懷孕期間感染病毒與子 女出現行為問題的關連。

ntrigued by how brain abnormalities can give rise to schizophrenia symptoms since he was a psychology undergraduate at University College London, Prof. Benjamin Yee first researched the disease while studying for his DPhil at the University of Oxford. Using a rat model with induced behavioural deficits, he found that he could normalise the animals’ behaviour with anti-schizophrenia medication. Following postdoctoral positions in the UK, Hong Kong and Switzerland, he spent more than a decade at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. There he developed a mouse model of schizophrenia that captured the link between infection during pregnancy and the emergence of behavioural problems in offspring.

Reflecting on the significance of such efforts, Prof. Yee explained that schizophrenia, which causes profound disruptions in thinking and chronic deterioration in cognitive faculties, affects more than 21 million people worldwide, impairing the capability of many to earn a livelihood. “Improving the treatment and management of schizophrenia”, he said, “means much more than reducing premature death and recovering lost productivity; it is about reducing human suffering and restoring human dignity.” Currently used drugs control some symptoms, but also cause long-term deterioration in cognitive functions such as memory and attention.

這些研究工作帶來了重要啟示。余教授解釋,精神 分裂症所引致的嚴重思想分裂及認知功能慢性衰 退,影響著全球超過二千一百萬人,其中很多人的 謀生能力亦有所障礙。他認為:「改善精神分裂症的 治療與管理不單可減少早逝及重獲失去的生產力, 更重要的是可減低患者的痛苦,使其重拾尊嚴。」 現時常用的藥物有助控制部分症狀,但同時引致記 憶及專注力等認知功能的長期退化。

A deep commitment to improving the treatment and management of schizophrenia and related mental dysfunctions has brought world-renowned neuroscientist and psychologist Prof. Benjamin Yee to PolyU, where he sees many exciting possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and beyond. 世界知名的腦神經科學家兼心理學家余其殷教授,全情投入於改善精神 分裂症及相關精神障礙的治療與管理,他最近亦因此加入理大,因為他 知悉康復治療科學系及其他學系充滿著令人振奮的跨領域協作契機。 Prof. Yee remarked that a better understanding of the biological causes of schizophrenia would allow the identification of the responsible brain abnormalities, and thus new drug targets and new forms of therapy to delay or halt cognitive deterioration. His findings in this direction have had a wide influence, earning him an impressive h-index of 44, but Prof. Yee suggested that neuroscience is a “rapidly developing and exciting field” and that the score “speaks positively of my research field as much as my own work”. He humbly saw his work as contributing to the continual effort to study complex human behaviour and traits using animal models, particularly through developing with colleagues a more holistic approach to evaluating the behavioural impacts of manipulations of single genes. At the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, which he joined in December 2015 after spending time as Director of Behavioural Neuroscience at the Legacy Research Institute in Oregon, USA, Prof. Yee is offering new ideas for interdisciplinary research, looking to strengthen the experimental hypothesisdriven approach, and devising an appropriate translational research framework. He is also excited about fostering inter-departmental collaboration to promote lifelong health and well-being, and benefiting from the diverse expertise available at PolyU, with its many platforms for technical innovation. These endeavours, along with existing collaborative links with scholars in Europe, the USA and the Chinese mainland, will ensure Prof. Yee’s continued ability to conduct research at the cutting edge of neuroscience. Yet they will also serve an even more important purpose. Long after his findings and insights are superseded, his legacy will persist through the new generation of scientists he has trained.

余教授強調,認識更多精神分裂症在生物學上的原 因有助辨識相關的大腦異常情況,繼而可以研發新 藥物及治療方法延緩或制止認知衰退。他在這方面 的研究發現具重大的影響力,其 H 指數達四十四。 余教授認為腦神經學是「急速發展及富挑戰性的領 域」,那指數「正面地反映這研究範疇的重要性,以 及我個人的研究工作。」他謙稱,其研究將有助繼 續利用動物模型,探討複雜的人類行為及特徵,特 別通過與同事合作發展一套更全面的方法,評核單 基因操控對行為的影響。 繼在美國俄勒岡州遺產研究所出任行為神經科學總 監一職後,余教授於 2015 年 12 月加入理大康復治 療科學系。他引入跨領域研究的新概念,著重加強 假設主導模式的實驗,設計合適的轉移研究框架。 此外,他亦積極推動部門之間的協作,並運用理大 不同的專業及其眾多的創新技術平台,推廣終身健 康的概念,裨益社會。 以上的工作,配合余教授與歐美及中國內地的學者 的協作網絡,將有助他繼續進行尖端的腦神經科學 研究。然而,這些研究的更深遠影響,是余教授透 過由他所栽培的新一代科學家,繼續把他的真知灼 見傳承下去。

With the theme of “A Legacy to Cherish‧A Future to Build”, the PolyU Fundraising Dinner held on 25 January brought together over 600 distinguished guests, alumni, staff and friends for a meaningful reunion. Highlights of the dinner included a sharing session by PolyU alumnus and artiste Miss Gigi Leung, a variety of musical performances and a live auction. Concurrently staged was a mini exhibition themed “Embarking on a Journey of Innovation and Creativity” which showcased the innovative ideas of PolyU researchers, students and graduates on how to build a better future. The University expressed its heartfelt appreciation for the generous support from sponsors and donors. Proceeds of the event will support student development.

1 月 25 日,理大以「傳承 · 啟程」為主題舉辦籌 款晚會,超過六百位嘉賓、校友、教職員、友好 歡聚一堂,共襄善舉。晚會的特別節目包括:理 大校友、知名藝人梁詠琪小姐分享環節、一連串 音樂表演及現場拍賣。同場亦舉行了「探索創新 創意之旅」小型博覽,展出理大科研人員、學生 及畢業生為建構更美好將來的創新設計。大學衷 心感謝贊助人及善長的慷慨捐助,晚會收益將用 於支持學生發展。

Advancing sustainability through endowed professorship 成立勵學教授席 促進可持續發展

PolyU recently established the Ko Jan Ming Endowed Professorship in Sustainable Structures and Materials with a generous donation from the Vantage Charity Foundation Limited. The professorship was taken up by Prof. Teng Jin-guang, Chair Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development.

理大最近獲盈信慈善基金有限公司捐贈成立「高 贊明可持續結構及材料教授席」,並由土木及環 境工程學系講座教授兼可持續城市發展研究院院 長滕錦光教授出任。

Fund-raising golf 高球籌款賽

With the support of title sponsor, the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association (HKJMA), the University organized the PolyU HKJMA Invitational Golf Tournament on 7 January. Over 180 friends, alumni and prominent business and community leaders joined the event in teams. The net proceeds will contribute to support students’ all-round development programmes.

1 月 7 日,香港珠寶製造業廠商會冠名贊助大學舉 行「理大 HKJMA 高爾夫球邀請賽」,逾一百八十 位友好、校友、商界翹楚及社會領袖組隊參加。 是次球賽籌得的善款在扣除開支後,將全數用作 支持學生的全人發展項目。

With the objective of conveying the message that “Everyone is a Maker”, the School of Design organized “Maker Faire Hong Kong” on 28-29 November 2015 for makers from all over the world to exchange knowledge and display projects in the areas of arts and crafts, science and engineering, food and music, wearables, architecture and so on. Highlights of the event included “Timely Hong Kong” – a large installation that engaged 4,000 participants to cocreate and mimic the landscape of Lion Rock; “Hebocon” – a robotic contest for the technically-ungifted; “WoT da Fun!” – a Hybrid Barricade Challenge featuring the creation of objects with wheels; “King Chung, the Model Maker” – face-to-face interaction with a renowned model maker as he made a canoe and “Hong Kong Open Printshop” – a series of DIY print-making workshops.

2015 年 11 月 28 至 29 日,來自全球的創客匯聚 由設計學院舉辦的「香港造節」,就他們的創作成 果交流意見及展示作品,範疇包括藝術與手工藝、 科學與工程、食物與音樂、穿戴式用品、建築概 念等,並推廣「人人都是創客」的訊息。亮點活動 包括:「香港當造物」— 由四千人以獅子山為藍本 共同築構的巨大模型 ;「廢柴機械人大戰」— 專供 非技術人士參加的機械人比賽 ;「軸物作樂」— 以 軸為主,創作土炮小驅挑戰賽 ;「模型製作師鍾經 洋」— 與模型製作達人親身交流製作木筏的心得 ; 以及「香港版畫工作室」— 一系列講求親手製作的 版畫工作坊。
